Roie McCann is the manager of the stunning and unique Clare Island Lighthouse accommodation so Roie is the perfect guest to give us an insider's guide to the magical Clare Island in Co. Mayo, Ireland. This is a part of the country I know very well and love so this is a great chat all about this beautiful part of Ireland.Clare Island stands guard at the entrance to Clew Bay, off Ireland's western Atlantic coast along the Wild Atlantic Way. For almost two centuries, the island's Lighthouse has been a nautical landmark perched high on the craggy cliffs, watching over Achill, Westport and beyond. Once a safe haven for sailors, this heritage property now offers a sanctuary of a different kind. This architecturally majestic, listed building has been lovingly transformed into fully catered, luxury accommodation, complemented by magnificent sea views and an inspiring, natural environment. For more information on the Clare Island Lighthouse check out https://www.clareislandlighthouse.comI love the Blue Book because they are generally family owned and run Irish Country House Hotels, Manor Houses, castles and restaurants. You really get to see Irish hospitality at its best and the properties are generally old country houses, so you get a real sense of the history of the area you are staying in. A Blue Book voucher would always be my top travel gift recommendation and their website is https://www.irelands-blue-book.ie.If you haven't already, I'd ask you to give me a follow on whichever platform you listen to your podcasts and you will be the first to get a new episode. Today we're diving into the heart of the Island of Ireland, its Legends and Landscapes, where every cliff, hill and glen whispers stories from a time long past. To get there is just a short flight or ferry ride from Great Britain, and yet arriving can feel like stepping into another world of history, mystery and breathtaking beauty. As Halloween approaches, there's no better time to delve into Ireland's ancient traditions. Did you know that the Island of Ireland is the birthplace of Halloween? It originates from the Celtic festival of Samhain, which marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter and even today the spirit of Samhain lingers, with festivals and celebrations that pay homage to the old ways.To help us explore some more of Ireland's incredible locations and the stories behind them, I'm joined by John O'Ceallaigh, one of our best loved travel journalists and editors, and an Ireland native from Galway on the west coast of Ireland. John's deep connection to his country, and his experience writing about it, makes him the perfect guide for our journey today. We're going to hear his Irish travel diaries today, from the wild beauty of Connemara and charming village of Roundstone to the Wild Atlantic Way's luxurious coastal castles, and windswept islands, like Aran and Achill, taking in the sights, tastes and sounds along the way because of course Ireland is a feast for all senses. Brought to you in partnership with Tripadvisor and Tourism Ireland, whether you're planning your next adventure or simply dreaming of distant shores, let this episode be your gateway to Ireland's legendary landscapes.Destination Recap: Connemara, Co. For those of you the follow Brigid O'Hara aka bridey_wine_chats, I can attest to the fact that she is the nicest, friendliest most down to earth woman. It was such a pleasure to speak to her in her hometown of Achill Island. Brigid O'Hora has spent over twenty years working in the wine industry. She began her training in Australia and since then has been a wine studies lecturer, held several posts as sommelier at prestigious restaurants in Paris, Boston, Sydney, Dublin and Clare and set up her own wine tasting business which she ran for three years. Nowadays, between raising her triplet children on the beautiful island of Achill off the west coast of Ireland, Brigid works as a Business Development Manager for Classic Drinks, an Irish wine company. And her passion remains spreading the joy of wine in a non-fussy, heartfelt manner, through food, joy and connection. Brigids honesty is refreshing and of course we get honest about what it has been like for her raising triplets. Brigid has a book due out in October, titled The Home Sommelier: Your down-to-earth guide to choosing good wine. I honestly cannot wait to get my hands on it.

How to handle INCOMPETENCE in your team Some good input from our Core Team Leader meeting on handling pressured situations in a team setting. Stefan, Paul, and Achill discussed various strategies for managing frustration within a team setting. They emphasized the importance of balancing empathy with accountability and being prepared to intervene directly if necessary. The team also recognized the value of these discussions as a form of conflict resolution practice, preparing them for real-world situations.
Do you set fitness goals? This is something that has been running (pardon the pun) around my head since my half marathon the other day As I've said before I wouldn't say I like running.. but I want to do it because it's both a physical and mental challenge for me But having the goal of being able to complete the Achill half marathon was the thing that kept me going when I didn't want to train But goals don't have to be about running... I speak about how goals can be anything but they have to be specific How motivation comes and goes but it's those little wins that keep you on track It's important that you set your goals for the right reasons and it's ok not to want to do something I also speak about celebrating the little wins and how it's important that you don't let other people's achievements take away from your own That it's ok to keep your goals secret until you're ready to share them I finish by speaking about how important it can be to have a friend or a coach to help you achieve your goals it can make it easier to stay accountable but it can also be fun! Ben is in England where he had the opportunity to visit the "Adventures in Time and Space - 60 Years of Doctor Who Art" exhibition at the Weston Museum in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset. This impressive collection spans the show's history and features original art from novelisations, VHS covers, annuals, and other visual treasures, including works from Chris Achilléos, Andrew Skilleter, Roy Knipe, and Colin Howard. Ben has shared some pictures he took of the overall exhibit and artwork on his Instagram, including Knipe's "Death to the Daleks" Target cover and Achilléos' "Loch Ness Monster", "Kklak", and "Seeds of Doom" covers. Plus the portait of Ace from 'Silver Nemesis' done in the style of Thomas Gainsborough. In addition to being agog as a fan, Ben also shares his curatorial view of the exhibit's strengths and weaknesses. Opening and closing music is by Dudley Simpson from his score to The Android Invasion. We recorded this episode on 1 April 2024.
Hey there, my lovely listeners and accidental audience members! Welcome aboard a special episode of the Moose on the Loose podcast. It's your friendly neighbourhood social media enthusiast, Paul, taking the reins this time, but with a twist—I'm the one in the hot seat, and my sister Elaine's playing host. Let's dive into the delightful chaos that ensued, shall we?Kicking things off, Elaine, in her infinite wisdom, decided it was high time I got a taste of my own medicine. Interviewed on my podcast? Well, why not! It's a bit like being asked to cook in your own restaurant on your day off, but I was game. After all, who better to uncover the layers of my social media shenanigans than the sister who's seen me at my most unfiltered? We took a stroll down memory lane, reminiscing about our childhood adventures—from our less-than-holy attempts at playing mass (yes, Brennan's bread was indeed the body of Christ in our house) to my fleeting consideration of joining the priesthood. Spoiler: the local school's belt-wielding priests quickly squashed that idea.Elaine, with her knack for steering conversations into uncharted waters, quizzed me about my career aspirations. Ah, the days of idolizing Pat Kenny and dreaming of the spotlight, only to find my calling in the unpredictable world of hospitality and social media. Who knew a mishap involving a Garth Brooks concert would catapult me into viral fame? Trolls, you have my thanks (and my sarcasm). Our chat took a turn into the more personal as we discussed my tranquil life in Achill—my sanctuary from the madness of the online world. Sure, it's not the bustling social scene one might dream of, but it's where I've found peace, happiness, and the occasional internet connection to poke the bear that is social media. The heart and soul of our talk, though, were my four-legged companions. Our family's furry members have brought us endless joy, and the story of our beloved Renko touched a chord. Losing him was a reminder of the deep connections we forge with our pets, and yes, I'm the guy who'll choose dog sitters as carefully as one might select a babysitter for a child.Elaine couldn't resist diving into my future plans, teasing out dreams and schemes, from skydiving aspirations to potential sauna expansions. But let's be real—what's on my bucket list today might be replaced by a new adventure tomorrow. That's the beauty of living a life as unpredictable as the social media algorithms I've come to know all too well.Wrapping up, we exchanged our virtual goodbyes with a promise of more shenanigans to come. It was an episode filled with laughter, a few tears, and the kind of sibling banter that could only come from years of shared experiences. To all who've made it this far, thanks for sticking with us through this whirlwind episode. Whether you're here by happy accident or genuine interest, I'm glad we could share these moments together. Here's to many more episodes, adventures, and unexpected turns on this wild ride called life. Cheers!WATCH NOW! Hello, listeners! It's Paul from "Moose on the Loose." Today's special episode features Richie's moving story of resilience and recovery. Richie candidly shares his struggle with addiction, rooted in the pain of childhood trauma, including the deep scars of sexual abuse. His descent into addiction, fueled by a desire to escape haunting memories, spirals into a relentless dependency on cocaine. Richie's journey, however, finds a turning point on Achill Island. This beautiful, remote place becomes a sanctuary for introspection and healing. As Richie recounts his initial days on the island, he describes how the overwhelming isolation eventually gives way to a profound connection with the land, the community, and himself. From comedic attempts at manual labor to therapeutic walks along the rugged coastline, Richie's narrative is a vivid portrayal of his path to recovery. This episode is more than a story; it's a testament to the power of human spirit and the capacity for change. Richie's transformation, supported by the people of Achill, offers hope to anyone facing their own challenges. It's a celebration of finding peace and a new beginning in the embrace of nature and community.Richie, thank you for your bravery and for reminding us that vulnerability is a strength. Emily had worked in the film industry in various roles for many years, as well as organising events, such as comedy nights, gigs, mini festivals and stages at Electric Picnic. Her decision to move to her family's ancestral homeplace of Achill, where she had often holidayed as a child, was prompted by the opportunity she had to think about what she wanted from life during the pandemic, and by a sense that Dublin was becoming more of a rat race. A keen fan of film festivals, Emily saw a gap in the market as there was no existing film festival in Achill. Indeed, the island does not even have a cinema. She also thought it would be a beautiful place for film industry professionals from all over the world to visit, meet and network with each other. After a hectic year of planning, the inaugural Achill Island Film Festival was held in May 2022. 370 people attended the event, which screened 115 films across five venues. This year promises to more of the same in terms of quality connection, quality content and quality networking opportunities in one of Ireland's most beautiful places. The Achill Island International Film Festival runs from tye 11th of May (Thursday) until the 13th of May. The club football Championships within the county reached their conclusion last weekend. While most of the focus, understandably, goes to Westport following their breakthrough first ever Moclair Cup success, it was a big weekend too for the footballers of Ballyhaunis, Islandeady and Achill, who captured the Intermediate, Junior A and Junior B titles respectively. In this episode of the Mayo Football Podcast, host Rob Murphy is joined by Colm Boyle and Stephen Drake to review what was a jam-packed weekend of club action. The lads start with the Senior final, identifying how Westport won it, the lessons they learned from previous outings, their tactics on the day and their impressive defensive strength. The chat then turns to what went wrong for Ballina and why this eagerly anticipated final never really sparked. Turning to the Intermediate decider, the lads discuss the winning performance provided by Ballyhaunis on Saturday, which enabled them to see off Kilmeena's challenge and ensure their return to the Senior ranks. Islandeady's winning performance against Cill Chomáin in the Junior A final, built on a well developed attacking plan, gets a mention, as does Achill's victory over Moygownagh in the Junior B decider. This episode of the Mayo Football Podcast is now online and is available to listen to on iTunes, SoundCloud, Podomatic and Spotify. You can also listen to it directly on the Mayo News website as well as on the Mayo GAA Blog. The podcast is also available on Patreon, where club members get access to loads of exclusive content and more besides. In the clubhouse section at the end of this pod, the lads discuss which players stood out from a Mayo perspective in the weekend's county finals.
