What's the best way to fight evil? Laugh at fascist idiots and keep hunting Nazis, with your camera and the power of your voice.    This week, we're honored to welcome legend Sandi Bachom, an award-winning documentary filmmaker of such powerful films as Telling Jokes in Auschwitz and a Getty Images contributor whose work has appeared in acclaimed films like Laura Poitras's All The Beauty and All The Bloodshed, Danny's Strong's Dopesick, and Alex Gibney's Crime of the Century. But Sandi isn't just behind the camera—she's on the frontlines, documenting Nazis, like Trump's MAGA rallies, and the Charlottesville tiki torch march where Heather Heyer was murdered. Sandi was also at the Capitol on January 6th, capturing Trump's violent coup attempt in real time, footage used by the January 6 committee in Congress.  Stay loud. Stay brave. We discuss the ethical challenges and responsibilities filmmakers face, such as the balance between storytelling and exploitation, and the need for authentic representation.  Each episode highlights key documentaries that have made significant impacts on society, including: - *The Thin Blue Line* by Errol Morris, which helped overturn a wrongful conviction. - *Citizenfour* by Laura Poitras, which brought Edward Snowden's revelations to the world stage. - *For Sama* by Waad Al-Kateab, providing a personal look into the Syrian Civil War. - *The Cove* by Louie Psihoyos, exposing the brutal practice of dolphin hunting in Japan. - *13th* by Ava DuVernay, a compelling examination of racial inequality and mass incarceration in America.  We also examine the future of documentary filmmaking, including the role of new technologies like VR and AR, the importance of expanding access and diversity in the field, and the ethical considerations that come with increased community engagement and participatory methods.  Whether you're a seasoned filmmaker or a passionate viewer, "The Camera as a Weapon" offers profound insights into the art and impact of documentary filmmaking. In this final episode of 2023 (and season 18), we (Neil and Dario) ruminate on a year spent thinking cinematically and engaging with cinema in the unique way that has become the hallmark of The Cinematologists; thoughtful, personal, searching for meaning and meaningful experiences across the movie spectrum. We both share brief discussions of two films that stuck with us from different points of the year, Neil talking about Mark Jenkin's short A Dog Called Discord and Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor's The Future Tense, while Dario ponders Patricio Guzman's My Imaginary Country and Samsara, directed by Lois Patiño. Then, we spend more time discussing three films each at greater length in what could be seen as their top 3 films of the year, if we were so inclined to frame them that way (and we go to great pains in the episode to make sure that they don't come across as ‘ranked'). Dario shares his thoughts on and fondness for Laura Poitras's All The Beauty and the Bloodshed, Celine Song's Past Lives and Todd Haynes's May December. While Neil decides to go deep on Cyril Schäublin's Unrest (which he shamefully claims is set in the 1920s when it's clearly late 19th Century!), Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch's The Eight Mountains and Aki Kaurismäki's Fallen Leaves. ——— Thank you to all our guests this season and to our listeners, we thank you for your continued support of The Cinematologists, and hope you join us for season 19, which commences in February 2024. ——— You can listen to The Cinematologists for free, wherever you listen to podcasts: click here to follow. When you find like-minded artists who appreciate each other's talents, you have a winning combination. Sometimes it’s the accident that makes the music. It’s called working with what you have.   BIOGRAPHIES::  SON LUX BIO: From the start, Son Lux has operated as something akin to a sonic test kitchen. The Academy Award® and BAFTA-nominated band strives to question deeply held assumptions about how music is made and reconstruct it from a molecular level. What began as a solo project for founder Ryan Lott expanded in 2014, thanks to a kinship with Ian Chang and Rafiq Bhatia too strong to ignore. The trio strengthened their chemistry and honed their collective intuition while creating, releasing, and touring six recordings, including Brighter Wounds (2018) and the triple album Tomorrows (2021). The result is a carefully cultivated musical language rooted in curiosity and balancing opposites that largely eschews genre and structural conventions. And yet, the band remains audibly indebted to iconoclastic artists in soul, hip-hop, and experimental improvisation who themselves carved new paths forward. Distilling these varied influences, Son Lux searches for an equilibrium of raw emotional intimacy and meticulous electronic constructions. Son Lux has most recently scored the new Daniels film for A24, Everything Everywhere All at Once (March 2022). The full score album features new collaborations with Mitski, David Byrne, Randy Newman, and Moses Sumney, among others. Based in New York, Rafiq Bhatia is the first-generation American son of Muslim immigrant parents who trace their ancestry to India through East Africa. Early influences such as Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane, and Madlib—as well as mentors and collaborators including Vijay Iyer and Billy Hart—prompted him to see music as a way to actively shape and represent his own identity, not limited by anyone else’s prescribed perspective. When Ian Chang describes his creative process, the phrase "third culture” keeps coming up. Born in the colony of Hong Kong in 1988, Chang has lived a nomadic life. Stationed out of New York for ten years and since relocated to Dallas, Texas, he built an impressive roster of progressive pop collaborators such as Moses Sumney, Joan As Policewoman, and Matthew Dear, among others, all while performing internationally and recording as a member of Son Lux and Landlady. Ryan Lott makes his home in Los Angeles but grew up all over the United States. Music was the one constant in his formative years spent at the piano. In addition to an extensive career writing music for dance, he has become a sought-after composer for advertising, television, and film. Lott’s feature film credits include The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (2014), Paper Towns (2015), and Mean Dreams (2017). The Snowden Leaks: 10 years later

Privacy Files

It's hard to believe, but ten years have passed since former government contractor Edward Snowden shocked the world disclosing that the United States National Security Agency (NSA) was collecting data from the electronic communications of millions of American citizens--all without a warrant. For the majority of the public, that's what people remember. But the classified documents Snowden leaked revealed much more than warrantless electronic surveillance. In this episode of Privacy Files, we take a hard look at about a year's worth of leaks. Starting from June 6, 2013 (when it all started) and ending on May 31, 2014, we revisit some of the most earth-shattering revelations about how the United States intelligence apparatus operates. Colin fills in for Sarah in the co-hosting chair. Colin is a member of Anonyome Labs' Security & Compliance team. Looking back at the disclosures, both Rich and Colin were mesmerized at the extent of what the Snowden leaks cover. Over the years, journalists have released thousands of documents that Snowden entrusted them with. Some believe this is still less than 1% of the entire archive. And they're probably close to being accurate cause according to national intelligence officials, Snowden downloaded up to 1.5 million files before fleeing Hawaii and heading to Hong Kong to meet with journalists Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras. After revisiting key revelations, Rich and Colin discuss what this all means for the world today. How have the Snowden Leaks impacted society, government and technology? One thing is clear. Personal privacy is on people's minds more than ever. And as a result, the last ten years have seen an explosion in privacy products for public consumption. In fact, the Snowden Leaks have impacted so much of global society that these impacts are often referred to as the "Snowden Effect." This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit yasha.substack.comWe recently went to the local theater to watch Ithaca, a new documentary about Julian Assange that focuses on his dad's efforts to get him out of London's Belmarsh Prison, where he's been held in solitary since 2019 while fighting extradition to United States on espionage charges — initially under Trump but now under Biden. Oh how things change! To add some context to the film, we watched and discuss two other Julian Assange docs: Laura Poitras' Risk and Alex Gibney's We Steal Secrets. They amount to a decade's worth of documentaries about Wikileaks — chronicling the increasing repression and marginalization and hopelessness of Julian and his project to change the world by freeing information.—Yasha and EvgeniaA couple of notes on our discussion. The three films are all very different. Of the three, Risk is probably the most interesting to watch but also the most deceptive and least informative. It gives viewers a false sense of intimacy and reality, while on the backend being very manipulative. As we discus in the ep, most viewers probably won't know that after Risk premiered at Cannes — and after Laura Poitras appeared and hugged on the red carpet with Wikileaks sidekick Jacob Appelbaum — Poitras re-edited the film, changing the narrative to show Julian Assange and Jacob Appelbaum not as heroes but as predators. Yasha first found out about this sneaky re-edit from Julian back in 2017 when Julian was still holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy. Julian felt betrayed and explained the re-editing of the film as Laura's attempt to protect her reputation from a couple of things that happened not long after the film had its premier in France. One was that Jacob Appelbaum — the Tor Project frontman with whom Laura was intimately involved with — was accused of being a sexual predator and was then cancelled by the privacy community. The second was that Julian became fully toxic in liberal circles during the 2016 presidential election: he was seen as a Russian asset who backed Trump over Hillary and released all those damaging emails. So as Julian explained: because of all of this Poitras had to betray her two friends — one of whom was in captivity, the other who used to be her lover — to make sure she came out of these scandals clean, even though she had no problem with any of this until it became public and a problem for her career. It was a tangled, gross situation.“I think it's mostly defensive. She's the daughter of a billionaire, and has an apartment in Tribecca, Manhattan,” Julian wrote to Yasha back then. “But she's pretty simple. She aspires to maximise her status among the Tribecca/Greenwich Village, etc. set.”

Melanie C, aka Sporty Spice, is best known for being in one of the most successful girl groups of all time. But this week she's swapping the pop world for the dance world and performing a new contemporary piece by the choreographer Jules Cunningham at Sadler's Wells. Melanie C and Jules Cunningham discuss their collaboration, How Did We Get Here? Rasha Nahas is a Palestinian singer-songwriter who was born in Haifa and now lives in Berlin. She tells Samira about her new album, Amrat, which is her first album in Arabic, and which explores nostalgia, sense of place, and the importance of authentic instrumental music. Film-maker Laura Poitras talks about her new documentary, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, which has been nominated for this year's Academy Awards. Following the photographer Nan Goldin's campaign against Purdue Pharma, owned by the Sackler family, for their part in the opioid crisis, the film paints an intimate portrait of Goldin's life, work and activism. The couple makes no attempt to learn about Aisha's personal life, treating her simply as ‘the help,' even demanding she work overtime with no pay. The film is directed by Nikyatu Jusu, and the character Aisha is portrayed by Sengalese-American actor Anna Diop who spoke with KPCC's John Horn about the thriller and the issue of representation in Hollywood.    John Horn's Interview With Director Laura Poitras of ‘All The Beauty And The Bloodshed' (43:51) The Sackler family is known for their pharmaceutical company Purdue Pharma and their contribution to the opioid crisis, in which they created and heavily marketed the painkiller OxyContin knowing it was highly addictive. Possibly far less known, however, is photographer and activist Nan Goldin, who staged public protests at museums bearing the Sackler name as they tried to artwash their image through generous donations. The new documentary ‘All The Beauty And The Bloodshed' tells the story of Goldin and her quest to take down the Sacklers. KPCC's John Horn spoke with the film's director Laura Poitras about bringing Nan Goldin's life and career to the screen.

Ep. 150: Laura Poitras on All the Beauty and the Bloodshed Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw. I'm Nicolas Rapold. One of the year's best films is All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, directed by Laura Poitras. It's about the life and work of photographer Nan Goldin, and her successful activism against the Sackler Family, whose company PurduePharma produced Oxycontin. Poitras and Goldin were collaborators on the film, which is a deeply moving work of art itself, featuring Goldin's candid photography and her tough and evocative voiceover. Goldin speaks openly of traumas in her past, including the tragic story of her sister, Barbara. I'm a huge admirer of Poitras's films, and as she generously pointed out, I first interviewed her in 2010 about her film The Oath, which was followed by her features Risk and Citizenfour, winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary. It was an honor to talk with her again about All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, winner of the Golden Lion in Venice and more recently Best Documentary from the New York Film Critics Circle. This week on the Film at Lincoln Center podcast, we're featuring a talk from the 60th New York Film Festival with photographer, artist, and activist Nan Goldin, moderated by NYFF programmer Rachael Rakes. In the NYFF60 Centerpiece selection All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, documentarian Laura Poitras takes as her subject Nan Goldin. An era-defining artist who rose from the New York “No Wave” underground to become one of the great photographers of the late 20th century, Goldin put herself at the forefront of the battle against the Sackler family and their pharmaceutical empire, both as an activist at art institutions around the world that had accepted millions from the Sacklers and as an advocate for the destigmatization of drug addiction. This intimate, career-spanning conversation with Goldin dove into the personal and political roots of her creative practice, the radical humanism of her photography, and the defiant intertwinings of her art and activism.  All the Beauty and the Bloodshed opens on November 23 in our theaters. Don't miss our Q&A with director Laura Poitras and P.A.I.N. activist Harry Cullen on November 26. Get showtimes and tickets at filmlinc.org/beauty All NYFF60 Talks are presented by HBO.

“At first, I was terrified”. These are not words you expect to hear very often from Laura Poitras, one of the world's most fearless and acclaimed documentary filmmakers. Afterall, this is the filmmaker who took on the U.S. intelligence community with her Academy Award-winning film “Citizenfour” about NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. But shortly into our “Top Docs” interview about her trenchant and luminous new documentary “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed”, Laura began to use words like “nervous”, “intimidating”, and “terrified”. Rather than experiencing a potentially dangerous physical situation or government surveillance operation, Laura, instead, found herself confronting something even more formidable, the groundbreaking visual artist Nan Goldin. Not wanting to come up short in her portrait of someone that Laura describes as a legend, hero and inspiration, Laura was driven to create a documentary that would do justice to Nan, her artwork and her activism. Laura joined Ken on “Top Docs” to talk about how she and Nan came together to collaborate on the film and form a strong creative partnership. Given Nan's frequent use of live slideshows to present her most well-known work, how did Laura and Nan figure out the best way to feature Nan's art in the film? Why and how did Nan and the activist group that she founded in response to the opioid crisis train their sights on the Sackler family, whose company created OxyContin? And in what ways do big themes like destigmatization, resistance and legacy feature prominently in the film? Join us for this lively conversation… and don't be afraid.   Hidden Gems: “Crossroads” “Perfect Film”   Follow on Twitter: @topdocspod   “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” will be released by NEON in theaters on November 23 in New York City and December 2 in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Taking its title from a poem by Bertolt Brecht, this talk explores the role of critique and criticism in the arts and beyond. Does critique represent a negative attitude to the world, or is it in fact an optimistic practice, one that allows us to imagine and work toward alternative and better realities? (Brecht, again: “Criticizing the course of a river means improving it, correcting it.”) Is criticism always a response to art, or can it be a form of art-making in itself? Can one effectively critique an institution or system while also living within it? Film Comment editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute delved into these questions with a roundtable of directors—Laura Poitras (All the Beauty and the Bloodshed), Elvis Mitchell (Is That Black Enough for You?!?), and Tiffany Sia (What Rules the Invisible)—whose films from the NYFF60 lineup are as stunning as works of art as they are incisive as critiques—whether of history, society, or art itself.

Laura Poitras, artist Nan Goldin, P.A.I.N. activists Harry Cullen & Megan Kapler, and lawyer Mike Quinn discuss their NYFF60 Centerpiece selection All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, moderated by NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim, at the press conference. In her essential, urgent, and arrestingly structured new documentary from Participant, Academy Award®–winning filmmaker Laura Poitras (Citizenfour) weaves two narratives: the fabled life and career of era-defining artist Nan Goldin and the downfall of the Sackler family, the pharmaceutical dynasty Goldin personally took on in her fight to hold accountable those responsible for the deadly opioid epidemic. Following her own personal struggle with opioid addiction, Goldin, who rose from the New York “No Wave” underground to become one of the great photographers of the late 20th century, put herself at the forefront of the battle against the Sacklers, both as an activist at art institutions around the world that had accepted millions from the family and as an advocate for the destigmatization of drug addiction. Illustrated with a rich trove of photographs by Goldin, who mesmerizingly narrates her own story, including her dysfunctional suburban upbringing, the loss of her teenage sister, and her community's fight against AIDS in the 1980s, Poitras's film is an enthralling, empowering work that stirringly connects personal tragedy, political awareness, and artistic expression. A NEON release. All NYFF60 documentaries are presented by HBO. All the Beauty and the Bloodshed opens on November 23rd at Film at Lincoln Center! Tickets on sale soon.
