SEASON 2 - EPISODE 131 - Ben Davis - Cinematographer In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with cinematographer Ben Davis (THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, LAYER CAKE). During our conversation, we talk all things cinematography, and we learn what it was about a film set that initially appealed to a younger Ben. We also discuss the importance of knowing how a film is going to be cut, and Ben reflects on his path working up the grades of the camera department. A frequent collaborator with director Martin McDonagh (Season 2, Episode 19), Ben shares how he and Martin typically prep, and he describes their process for working on THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN. We also discuss how Ben balances shooting with multiple cameras, and he compares the experiences of shooting on films with many resources against those with much fewer. We later discuss the pitfalls of pre-vis, and we reflect on the different practices of manipulating film stock and digital footage. Plus, Ben shares his best impression of producer Dino De Laurentiis - This episode is sponsored by Aputure

emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Barry Keoghan, originally episode 226 from 2018-08-29.Below is the original writeup for context - but as you will know, the years since this was recorded have seen Barry find new audiences while revealing all sorts of new levels to his skills and talents. So enjoy this flashback to the 2018 era Barry! Note - this writeup was for the original episode where Barry shared it with Bart Layton - just a quick FYI.–––––––––––––––––––––––––An amazing chance to catch up with the pair as Pip rocks it tag-team style, starting the podcast with director Bart Layton and concluding halfway through with actor Barry Keoghan. Needless to say, with two sides of the story covered you get a comprehensive and detailed look at a unique pocket of the movie industry, a fascinating side of the indie film world and certainly longer than a regular press junket. You'll get to hear about the realities of making and marketing a movie in a world of cinema and Netflix (or dare I say, cinema versus Netflix), the differences in those two worlds as well as the merits of both, the ludicrous nature of the premise of ‘American Animals' and how it works as a film, how Barry is a grade A actor without formal training and how acting was not a conventional pursuit being where he is from. Naturally there is more besides but that's down to YOU, dear listener, to unravel and enjoy. Which you shall. The recording is a touch on the reverberant side, which you might pick up on, but in headphones your ears will rapidly attune and all will be well. The tension starts with the title of this week's movie - The Banshees of Inisherin. Banshees cry right before someone dies. That's tension right there - who will it be? The anticipation about who is going to die is high because the outcome is unknown. Tension thrives with uncertainty. I also explore the idea of high and low tension in a story. Valerie is powering on with her study of the 4 Story Questions and showing why they are so important. If you don't want to waste years writing in circles, this episode will help you hold the story banshees at bay. -M"Tension is nested just like the units of story." - Melanie HillRelated Story Nerd EpisodesCalendar GirlsSeasons 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 12 For access to writing templates and worksheets, and more than 70 hours of training (all for free), subscribe to Valerie's Inner Circle. To learn to read like a writer, visit Melanie's website.Follow Valerie on Instagram and Threads @valerie_francisFollow Melanie on X, Instagram and Facebook @MelanieHillAuthor
This week, Mark Tilley returns to the pod to discuss 2022's The Banshees of Inisherin, Colin's reunion with Martin McDonagh, the source of his first Academy Awards nomination, and frankly one of the key reasons we did this podcast in the first place. Is this movie the true successor to Italian neo-realism? Have we as a society properly reckoned with the crimes of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri? Two years on, is this movie's total shutout at the Oscars deeply embarrassing? Does the Brenan Gleeson Rushmore get so contentious it almost ruins a friendship? Do we all love Jenny the Donkey? The answers to these questions, and many more, can be found inside. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Hosted by Andrew Quinn, Darren Mooney and Conor Murphy, this week with special guest Ciara Moloney, The 250 is a (mostly) weekly trip through some of the best (and worst) movies ever made, as voted for by Internet Movie Database Users. New episodes are released every second Saturday at 6pm GMT, with the occasional bonus episode between them. This September, the podcast is going back to school, covering the films on the Irish Leaving Certificate that we have yet to cover. This time, Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin. As the Civil War rages on the mainland, an even more intimate conflict is brewing on the idyllic Irish island of Inisherin. For years, Pádraig and Colm have been the best of friends, but that all changes one day when Colm decides the dissolve their acquaintance. Neither man is fully prepared for the consequences of that decision, and how it tears the island apart. At time of recording, it was not ranked on the list of the best movies of all time on the Internet Movie Database.
On this episode, season 1 of CINEMA SURPRISE gets its penultimate installment from Joseph: BANSHEES OF INISHERIN
From writer/director Martin McDonagh comes Banshees of Inisherin (2022), a deeply sad and wildly hilarious movie about friendship on a remote island. This movie is sometimes referred to as the spiritual successor of In Bruges (2008) as it stars Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell. But is that an accurate statement? Tune in to hear Jim and A.Ron's thoughts on this well-written and superbly acted film. Thank you Michael for commissioning this podcast! Birdman and I are going to find out by becoming Banshee experts in one night. “It was all going fine until he chopped off all his fingers.”In 2022, writer-director Martin McDonagh reunited with his In Bruges stars, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, to create a haunting tale of friendship, loss, and the far-reaching consequences of our actions. Set against the backdrop of the Irish Civil War in 1923, The Banshees of Inisherin was filmed on the breathtaking Achill Island and Inishmore, capturing the essence of a remote Irish community. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off the final series in this season of looking at films nominated in various award categories over the last 100 years – a format we've thoroughly enjoyed exploring. We begin our 2023 DGA Awards Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film Nominees series with a conversation about The Banshees of Inisherin.A Microcosm of War and FriendshipIn our discussion, we explore how The Banshees of Inisherin serves as a microcosm for the larger conflict of the Irish Civil War. The sudden dissolution of Pádraic and Colm's friendship mirrors the division and brutality of the war, with both men stubbornly refusing to reconcile. We also delve into the film's examination of the dehumanization of violence and how even the most trivial of disagreements can escalate into devastating battles.Throughout the episode, we touch upon various aspects of the film that contribute to its brilliance, such as the powerhouse performances of Farrell, Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan; the stunning Irish landscapes that create a captivating atmosphere; and the role of animals as extensions of the characters' identities and emotional states. We also ponder the potential for this story to become a legendary tale passed down through generations, becoming an origin story for future pub conversations.Other topics covered in our conversation include:The exploration of blind spots in self-perception and the journey of self-discoveryThe cultural conflicts and stereotypes at play within the island communityThe tragic consequences of the characters' inability to move past their differencesThe film's seamless blending of humor and heartbreakThe Banshees of Inisherin is a masterful exploration of the complexities of human relationships and the far-reaching consequences of our actions. Martin McDonagh's deft direction, combined with the brilliant performances of the cast, makes for a film that is both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant. While the film's darker themes may not be for everyone, we found it to be a captivating and worthwhile cinematic experience. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. This week's episode of the Empire Podcast is a smash, folks. First off, Alex Godfrey talks to ace actor Mike Faist, star of Luca Guadagnino's new tennis movie, Challengers [23:12 - 37:33 approx.], and then Chris Hewitt has a Zoom session (apologies if the sound is slightly distorted — tech issues) with Kerry Condon, Oscar-nominated star of The Banshees Of Inisherin, voice of F.R.I.D.A.Y. in the MCU, and star of this week's Liam Neeson thriller, In The Lands Of Saints And Sinners. [57:25 - 1:15:29 approx.] Either side of those, Chris hosts in the podbooth and is joined by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer and, for a spell, Sophie Butcher, to discuss the week's movie news, including the latest Deadpool & Wolverine trailer, review Challengers, In The Land Of Saints And Sinners, Boy Kills World, and Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver, and tackle a listener question that has stuck around from last week, and mutated somehow into a Mount Rushmore of directors' tenth movies. Play along at home, why don't you? Enjoy.
Howdo fair podcast listener! We are stoked to bring you a new movie talk episode this week! We decided to do a themed episode this time and that theme is director Martin McDonagh. Kevin's choice is McDonagh's most recent film, The Banshees of Inisherin. It's about a couple of old friends and one of them decides that he doesn't want to be friends anymore. Drew's pick is McDonagh's 2008 movie In Bruges, a film about a couple of hitmen that have to lay low in Bruges, Belgium. Better late than never! Back in Episode 29, Allison and her fellow cinephile Josh Bermont discussed director Martin McDonagh's amazing debut crime film, IN BRUGES, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. Now you can listen to the rest of that discussion, as they dig into the latest film by this legendary trio, THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN, which came out in 2022. Unlike In Bruges, which is a contemporary story about two assassins holed up in a very storybook medieval town, Banshees takes place in 1923 on a remote island off the coast of Ireland, and involves an odd feud between two old friends. Yet somehow, the two make perfect bookends on a thematic level.
