The road to Royal Ascot is heating up — and The Final Furlong Podcast team has all the angles. Emmet Kennedy is joined by Laura Joy, Adam Mills, Jamie Wrenn and Archie Brooks to look back on a brilliant weekend of flat racing with an eye on Group 1 targets and long-range Royal Ascot punts. We kick off with Lead Artist's Group 1 Lockinge win, and debate who's best placed for the Queen Anne Stakes — Rosallion, Notable Speech or Dancing Gemini? The team weighs in, and Laura names a 10/1 shot she believes is the bet right now. Babouche, Ger Lyons' Group 1-winning juvenile, impressed in the Lacken Stakes — but is she worth backing for the Commonwealth Cup? We also debate the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, with a confident 33/1 tip, plus takes on French raiders and Aidan's Aussie-bred wildcard. Can See The Fire be a Juddmonte International filly? What next for Rebel's Romance and Kyprios after their latest runs? And we scout potential Royal Ascot 2yo stars — including an Albany outsider to watch. Links:https://www.ireland.com/de-de/magazine/ireland-on-screen/the-banshees-of-inisherin/ https://www.ireland.com/de-de/magazine/culture/9-great-craft-experiences/ https://www.ireland.com/de-de/magazine/culture/aran-jumper/ https://www.ireland.com/de-de/destinations/regions/aran-islands/ https://craftsofireland.ie/ https://questandthrive.ie/activities/creative-events-for-adults/ https://www.letscraftni.com/ https://www.9ironscraft.ie/ https://silverworks.ie/ https://glasshammer.ie/ https://nisilver.com/

Late Nights at BlockbusterWhat will you do with a new Late Nights at Blockbuster? Will you fight? We are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the movie that all pastors love to quote, Braveheart! Much likeMel Gibson our Scottish accents will be going in and out when you least expect it. We also can't stop giggling at the ridiculous names in this move so be prepared for a lot of that. We spent a little time on the historical accuracy of the movie but didn't beat the dead horse like others have over the years. Byers takes another opportunity to trash The Banshees of Inisherin. Send us a textOn this episode of Speaking Of…College of Charleston, we have a great conversation with Joe Kelly, director of Irish and Irish American Studies and Colleen Glenn, director of film studies at the College about Irish books and movies. The colleagues first met playing softball with faculty from the English department and quickly became friends. They put their heads together and took a group of students to Ireland for a study abroad program, traveling from Dublin to Galway.“When we do those visits, the students follow our discussions of films, like In The Name of the Father and they're really able to see the landscape and the culture that inspired the movie they they saw on the big screen,” says Glenn. They recount trips around Ireland, emphasizing locations featured in Irish films such as Dublin, Galway, Connemara, and Belfast. Films discussed include The Quiet Man, Michael Collins and Banshees of Inisherin among others, illustrating the socio-political history and cultural identity of Ireland. The episode also touches on significant Irish cinematic movements and celebrates the storytelling legacy and literary richness of Irish culture. The way Kelly's describes the landscape, and the novels are a clear indicator of his knowledge and love for the country. He's an in-demand professor for a reason.“John Huston did a film version of The Dead, which is a very quiet story,” says Kelly. “And it ends with this beautiful scene where Gabriel Conroy is looking out the window at the snow falling onto the streets of Dublin and he imagines it falling across the mutinous Shannon waves and the bog of Allen and out onto the crooked crosses in the graveyard where Michael Furey lay buried. It's the most beautiful prose I've ever read and it's a absolutely beautiful 10 minutes of cinematography too.”Featured on this Episode:Joe Kelly, director of Irish and Irish American Studies at the College of Charleston, has been studying and writing about Irish literature since the 1990s, and in the last fifteen years he's been writing narrative histories about American democracy. His next book, The Biggest Lie: A Hundred Years of American Fascism, 1818-1918, will be out this time next year.Colleen Glenn, director of film studies at the College, teaches courses on film history and American Cinema as well as special topics courses on topics like Irish Cinema & Hollywood Auteurs. In addition to co-editing an anthology on stardom, she has published on Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Stewart, and other film stars.Irish movies mentionedThe Quiet Man (John Ford, 1952)The Crying Game (Neil Jordan, 1992)In the Name of the Father (Jim Sheridan, 1993)Michael Collins (Neil Jordan, 1996). Greg Alba and Tara Erickson dive into the magical chaos of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the film that takes the Wizarding World to new heights with the Triwizard Tournament, the Yule Ball, and the terrifying return of Lord Voldemort. This reaction covers all the film's most iconic moments, including Harry vs. the Hungarian Horntail, the underwater challenge in the Black Lake, the maze's deadly traps, Cedric Diggory's tragic death, and Voldemort's resurrection, which remains one of the most chilling scenes in the entire franchise. The film introduces Barty Crouch Jr. (David Tennant) in a major twist, as well as Mad-Eye Moody (Brendan Gleeson), whose lessons on the Unforgivable Curses left a lasting impact on Harry and fans alike. The emotional weight of Cedric's fate, Dumbledore's "Did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire?" moment, and the shocking final duel make this one of the darkest and most defining entries in the series. Main Cast & Characters: Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter (Swiss Army Man, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story), Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley (Servant, Snatch), Emma Watson as Hermione Granger (Beauty and the Beast, The Perks of Being a Wallflower), Robert Pattinson as Cedric Diggory (The Batman, Twilight), Ralph Fiennes as Lord Voldemort (Schindler's List, The Grand Budapest Hotel), Brendan Gleeson as Mad-Eye Moody (In Bruges, The Banshees of Inisherin), David Tennant as Barty Crouch Jr. (Doctor Who, Good Omens), Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore (The King's Speech, Layer Cake), Alan Rickman as Severus Snape (Die Hard, Love Actually), Maggie Smith as Minerva McGonagall (Downton Abbey, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie), Gary Oldman as Sirius Black (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Dracula). The Harry Potter franchise is one of the most beloved in cinematic history. From ‘Aesop's Fables' to ‘Shrek' and the ‘Banshees of Inisherin', donkeys have often been represented in popular media, but has their representation always been fair and accurate, or has it been constricted by tired clichés?A new film course in the UK is aiming to change this. Twenty years ago, Two-time Oscar winner Oliver Stone (Platoon, JFK, Wall Street) finally had the opportunity to direct the grand-scale historical epic which he and several of his directing peers (Scorsese, Kubrick) had been trying to helm for decades.....the story of Alexander the Great who once lead a MASSIVE Macedonian Empire which at one point comprised around half of the land mass in the Eastern Hemisphere during ancient times. He lived one hell of a life conquering much of the ancient world and here he is played by Colin Farrell (In Bruges, The Banshees of Inisherin, The Penguin) whose casting DID raise some eyebrows at the time of release....especially given that he portrayed this character with his heavy Irish accent. And beyond that, Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie (Girl Interrupted, Salt, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) was cast as his mother Olympias....even though she was only one year older than Farrell at the time. Beyond that, the stellar cast also includes Val Kilmer, Rosario Dawson, Anthony Hopkins, and the late, great Christopher Plummer among several others. Also co-written by Oliver Stone, this would also be THE last big budget film he would helm as the $150 million production was not only a commercial flop but also destroyed by critics at the time of release. And yet....a few years later, Stone was able to release his own extended "Director's Cut" on DVD (and eventually Blu-Ray) which is considered by many (himself included) to be a far superior version of this story as it includes 40 additional minutes of footage including some extended action sequences. So in reviewing THAT version of this film, let's find out if Alexander DID in fact live up to his title. ;) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

The tension starts with the title of this week's movie - The Banshees of Inisherin. Banshees cry right before someone dies. That's tension right there - who will it be? The anticipation about who is going to die is high because the outcome is unknown. Tension thrives with uncertainty. I also explore the idea of high and low tension in a story. Valerie is powering on with her study of the 4 Story Questions and showing why they are so important. If you don't want to waste years writing in circles, this episode will help you hold the story banshees at bay. -M"Tension is nested just like the units of story." - Melanie HillRelated Story Nerd EpisodesCalendar GirlsSeasons 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 12 For access to writing templates and worksheets, and more than 70 hours of training (all for free), subscribe to Valerie's Inner Circle. To learn to read like a writer, visit Melanie's website.Follow Valerie on Instagram and Threads @valerie_francisFollow Melanie on X, Instagram and Facebook @MelanieHillAuthor

This week, Mark Tilley returns to the pod to discuss 2022's The Banshees of Inisherin, Colin's reunion with Martin McDonagh, the source of his first Academy Awards nomination, and frankly one of the key reasons we did this podcast in the first place. Is this movie the true successor to Italian neo-realism? Have we as a society properly reckoned with the crimes of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri? Two years on, is this movie's total shutout at the Oscars deeply embarrassing? Does the Brenan Gleeson Rushmore get so contentious it almost ruins a friendship? Do we all love Jenny the Donkey? The answers to these questions, and many more, can be found inside. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Hosted by Andrew Quinn, Darren Mooney and Conor Murphy, this week with special guest Ciara Moloney, The 250 is a (mostly) weekly trip through some of the best (and worst) movies ever made, as voted for by Internet Movie Database Users. New episodes are released every second Saturday at 6pm GMT, with the occasional bonus episode between them. This September, the podcast is going back to school, covering the films on the Irish Leaving Certificate that we have yet to cover. This time, Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin. As the Civil War rages on the mainland, an even more intimate conflict is brewing on the idyllic Irish island of Inisherin. For years, Pádraig and Colm have been the best of friends, but that all changes one day when Colm decides the dissolve their acquaintance. Neither man is fully prepared for the consequences of that decision, and how it tears the island apart. At time of recording, it was not ranked on the list of the best movies of all time on the Internet Movie Database.

Today's word of the day is ‘puppet' as in Roger Goodell as in Jerry Jones as in Commanders as in undercover reporter. Let me break this down for you. It's crazy. Commanders VP of Content goes on a date… but the date is an undercover reporter. Woof. (13:55) NPPOD. Matt Chapman signed a huge deal with the Giants. Boras special. (22:04) The Packers and Eagles play on Friday in Brazil. The players for the Eagles had some not so nice things to say about Brazil! (33:00) Review: Banshees of Inisherin. (35:40) It's time we discuss what happened in Georgia yesterday. Another school shooting. Two teachers dead. Two 14-year olds dead. Done by a fellow 14-year old student. Unreal… (43:15) Players continue to get hit by pitches. It continues to get worse and worse and worse. Whit Merrifield sounded off on this after being hit in the head. Tom in for Nick and joined by the Racing Post's Jonathan Harding. They both tie up a few notable stories from the week including the news that all jockeys who missed intended breath sampling last month have been cleared of any wrongdoing. Jonathan also gives his view on Callum Shepherd's successful appeal against an 18-day ban. Jour de Galop's Adrien Cugnasse is along to flesh out the possibility of geldings running in the Arc and we also pay a visit to Noel George who outlines plans for stable star Il Est Francais. And with two Group 1 races on the horizon in Europe this weekend we hear from Big Rock's trainer Maurizio Guarnieri, with his charge likely to swerve the race, and from Charyn's rider Silvestre De Sousa. And Tom Eaves joins us to hail Betfair Sprint Cup favourite Inisherin the best he has sat on.

Sometimes a movie comes along and it just is a movie. We felt left out the loop here with A Serious Man. We didn't quite understand it, and thats okay. Not every movie is going to work for us. We enjoyed some of the performances, the cinematography and really struggled just about everywhere else. From writer/director Martin McDonagh comes Banshees of Inisherin (2022), a deeply sad and wildly hilarious movie about friendship on a remote island. This movie is sometimes referred to as the spiritual successor of In Bruges (2008) as it stars Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell. But is that an accurate statement? Tune in to hear Jim and A.Ron's thoughts on this well-written and superbly acted film. Thank you Michael for commissioning this podcast! This week, Charlotte Greenway recaps on the interview with connections of runners in the July Cup which include the the two three-year-olds at the head of the market Inisherin and Vandeek with Kevin Ryan and Ed Crisford both confident of big performances. Possibly Karl Burke's best sprinter misses the race but he does have Royal Ascot 2nd Swingalong in there and Karl thinks she could be too big a price. Finally, Eamon O'Connor explains the decision to supplement filly Tamfana for the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp tomorrow and shares what sort of result they're hoping for.
Sam Hart is joined by Graeme Rodway, Matt Gardner and Unibet's Ed Nicholson to preview the action at Newmarket, York and Ascot this weekend. The three-year-olds dominate the top of the betting and Inisherin will be bidding to back up his win in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. Ascot and York provide supporting cards on ITV this weekend and there are some competitive handicaps for the team to try to solve. Graeme and Ed agree on a 20-1 shot in the John Smith's Cup for a trainer who has a good record in the race. The team finish by sharing their other selections before providing their weekend NAPs.

Geoff Banks pays tribute to titan of the rails David Power, who died yesterday.
This week we watched ‘White Savior' the movie. All of us were on the same page about this movie being completely tone deaf to the actual story or actual Christian values. While we adore Sandra Bullock and will forever worship our congenial Queen, she was not enough to make this an enjoyable experience.
