Guys, I truly believe this and not allowing any doubt to creep out or in.[00:15:10] What if it doesn't work? Am I going to get run out of here in one year? Will my coaching career be over.[00:15:46] The biggest lesson that I've learned is instead of just saying, I can run this system with any type of team I've had to adjust that to how can I still play the style that I think is right and I enjoy, but tweak it and make it work for this team that I have.[00:17:31] We build shooters. That's the best thing that we do.[00:17:51] why not instead of just putting it all in the players it's your fault that you're not better shooters, why not help them become that?[00:18:01] I have to make sure that in my practice time I'm helping them to become better shooters.[00:19:08] I think they need to start every practice off shooting.[00:20:04] We do tons of shooting games because I want every time they shoot for them to have that feeling that they'll have when they play. Pressure. Time. Score. This shot matters.[00:20:24] If I make 60 and this guy makes 80 again and again, who should be getting the shots here.[00:20:47] I don't mess with their form very much at all. I don't. I think it's 90 to 10. 90% between their ears, 10% form.[00:22:21] I would say the number one thing that coaches and teams struggle with is shot selection. And it's also the number one reason why teams lose games.[00:22:47] We got to get away from vague terminology.[00:23:07] That term good shots can mean five different things to those players.[00:23:50] Teach them. Show them through shooting games what the range is.[00:24:13] What do they prove to you over a long period of time and shooting games?[00:25:58] How do you detach from outcome, right? How do you let these guys fire away without worrying whether it's going in or out.[00:27:02] Shoot to get hot. Shoot to stay hot.[00:28:06] If it's a seven, we're going to continue to shoot those sevens because oh, it's math man. It's percentages. It will come back to help us.[00:29:43] I would consider one of the most genius coaches of all time is Arsenault at Grinnell. The guy that literally created a new style, a new brand of basketball.[00:33:04] I think every coach has a style of play that lines up directly with them. It makes sense. They can see it. They believe in it. They feel like this is the right way to play.[00:38:10] I think the biggest thing I've learned this last year is to give up control.[00:40:16] I got to give up control of this, or I'm going to go insane and nothing I can say or do is going to change their mind.[00:41:33] I tell them that I don't think you're making the right choice, but I'm going to keep working with you.[00:42:14] Control the controllables, man. Don't spend a second of your life worrying about those things that you can't, and you'll be a whole lot happier.[00:42:50] If anyone wants to have some thoughts for yourselves go mow a huge lawn all the time.[00:43:43] I used to scout too much. Scouting's overrated. If you do one thing defensively and you do one thing off offensively, then just worry about your guys and become really good at what you do.[00:45:15] I have happier players. I have players that aren't burnout halfway through the year.[00:48:22] I think, small sided games, the more you can play, those are the way to go.[00:49:24] How do you take all the things you want to do and boil it down to what Tim Ferris would call the minimum effective dose, this is what you need to do to be good?

My buddy Matt Sayman, basketball coach and host of the Jamodi Podcast, posted a philosophy yesterday he has for players.  He said, "We want our players to drive, we don't want them to dribble for no particular reason." Though the implications were about basketball, the methodology applies to life. In this episode, we'll discuss:  The stagnant mindset Identifying dribbler tendencies in your life Why you need to play offense Becoming Attack Minded

My buddy Matt Sayman is one of the greatest basketball minds that I know.  He also happened to be the cornerstone of the Baylor Basketball program turning around after the Scandal when we were in college. This weekend, while hooping together, I noticed that I played differently when I was on his team as if I saw the game through his eyes.  In any endeavor in life, we can improve far more rapidly, if we'll see a project or event through the eyes of someone more skilled than us. In this episode, we'll discuss: Finding the Right Lens Learning by Proxy How questions make you greater quicker Becoming a "natural" Check out Matt's book, "The Leftovers : Basketball, Betrayal, Baylor and Beyond" HERE.   *Tony Romo said it was one of the best comeback stories he's ever read

This week's book is The Leftovers: Basketball, Baylor, Betrayal, and Beyond by former Baylor basketball player Matt Sayman. With Baylor winning the men's NCAA Division 1 Basketball Championship just days ago, I felt like this was a great opportunity to look at some of the mistakes made 20 years ago that took the program to the lowest point that they - or arguably any major college basketball program - had ever sunk, and talk about how we can work to avoid making those same mistakes in our own lives. Our story is told by a man who was on the team when it all came crashing down and was a big part, along with current Baylor Coach Scott Drew, of setting it back on the right track. Former coach and athletic director Brian Williams joins me to talk about what happens when winning becomes your god, why we excuse bad behavior in successful people, and the importance of consistently putting others first. Kids can learn teamwork, discipline, and how to respond to good leadership – all while they stay physically fit! Sports can also offer a great alternative to hanging out with the wrong people and possibly getting involved in activities that lead nowhere good. Matt Sayman is currently serving as the head boys basketball coach at Grapevine Faith High School. Matt recently released his book titled, The Leftovers: Basketball, Betrayal, Baylor & Beyond, describing his journey to college athletics. It's a remarkable story of personal loss, tragedy and perseverance through his senior season at Baylor University. Matt's teams at Grapevine Faith High School have become well known for their offensive accomplishments, including leading the the nation in 3-point field goals made each of the last two years. Matt was a three-year letterman at The Colony High School in The Colony, Texas, where he played under head coach Tommy Thomas. He was also a two-year Team MVP, elected Honorable Mention All-USA by USA Today, and a McDonald's All-American nominee as a senior. He was the ninth-ranked recruit in the state by Texas Hoops and also received District 5-5A MVP following a stellar senior season. Other high school accolades include being selected Second-Team All-State and First-Team All-Region 1 by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. After his high school career, Matt signed a scholarship with Baylor University where he played all four years. He was a valuable member of his college team and contributed in many ways both on and off the court. While playing at Baylor, he set the record for the most games played in Baylor history – 118 games. After college, Matt played professionally in Iceland, winning the Icelandic championship for Njardvik in 2005.
