The Darin Olien Show
The Truth About Oxalates: Is Your Diet Hurting Your Kidneys and Gut Health?

The Darin Olien Show

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 20, 2025 22:25

Are oxalates actually harming your health, or is this another nutrition myth? In this episode of Super Life, Darin Olien breaks down the real science behind oxalates, their connection to kidney stones, mineral absorption, and gut health, and whether you really need to avoid high-oxalate foods. There's a lot of fear-mongering around oxalates, but what does the latest research say? Should you stop eating spinach, beets, or almonds? What about meat's impact on kidney function? Darin pulls from peer-reviewed studies to cut through the noise and give you the facts so you can make the best choices for your health. If you've ever wondered whether oxalates are a real concern or just clickbait, this episode is a must-listen.     Segment 1: What Are Oxalates? Friend or Foe? Oxalates, or oxalic acid, are naturally occurring compounds found in many plant-based foods. They serve as a defense mechanism for plants but can sometimes bind with minerals like calcium and iron in the body, potentially forming kidney stones or reducing nutrient absorption.  Here's the key question: Are oxalates dangerous, or is this another health myth blown out of proportion?   Here's what the research says:  For most people, oxalates are NOT a problem. Your body naturally processes and eliminates excess oxalates through urine.  For those prone to kidney stones, particularly calcium oxalate stones (which make up about 80% of all kidney stones), consuming too many high-oxalate foods can increase the risk.  Oxalates can interfere with calcium and iron absorption, but this is only a concern for people with nutrient deficiencies.   Key takeaway: If your kidneys are healthy, your body handles oxalates just fine. But if you've had kidney stones before, you might want to pay closer attention to your oxalate intake.      Segment 2: What Does the Science Say About Oxalates?  To cut through the noise, I pulled up the latest research from 2024 and 2025. Here's what's new:    1. Gut Microbiota Can Help Protect Against Oxalates  A  2025 study in Frontiers in Nutrition found that certain gut bacteria (like Oxalobacter formigenes) actually digest oxalates, helping prevent kidney stones.  Takeaway: If you're worried about oxalates, supporting your gut microbiome with probiotics might be a natural way to reduce their impact.  Link: Read Study Here   "The presence of oxalate-degrading bacteria in the gut can significantly lower oxalate absorption and reduce kidney stone risk." – Dr. L. Wang, NHANES Study    2. Vitamin C Supplements & Oxalate Formation  Some people worry that high-dose vitamin C supplements convert into oxalates, increasing kidney stone risk.  A 2025 study in Nutrients found no significant increase in urinary oxalates from vitamin C intake.  Takeaway: If you take vitamin C in moderation, you don't have to worry about it increasing oxalates.  Link: Read Study Here "Contrary to popular belief, moderate vitamin C supplementation does not significantly raise oxalate levels in urine." – Dr. P.C. Calder, Nutrients Journal    3. Cooking & Fermentation Can Reduce Oxalates  A 2024 study on fermentation & nutrient bioavailability found that cooking reduces oxalate levels by up to 60%.  Best methods? Boiling, steaming, and fermentation lower oxalates significantly.  Takeaway: If you love spinach but worry about oxalates, just boil it first!  Link: Read Study Here      Segment 3: What About Meat? Does It Increase Kidney Stone Risk? Now, here's something you might not expect. We talk a lot about oxalates and plant-based foods, but what about meat? Could eating too much meat actually contribute to kidney stones? The research says YES—but not because of oxalates. Instead, the mechanism is uric acid and metabolic acidity. Let's break it down.   1. Red Meat & Uric Acid Stones  A 2024 study in Nature Reviews Urology found that high animal protein intake increases uric acid, which contributes to kidney stones.  Excess meat consumption makes urine more acidic, making it easier for stones to form.  Link: Read Study Here "High animal protein intake, while providing essential amino acids, also contributes to increased acid load and uric acid production, both of which are risk factors for kidney stone development." – Dr. S. Loeb, Nature Reviews Urology     2. Meat Increases Metabolic Acidity  A 2025 study from Frontiers in Endocrinology found that excessive meat consumption leads to increased acid load, calcium loss, and kidney dysfunction.  This makes it harder for the kidneys to filter out waste properly.  Link: Read Study Here "While meat consumption is essential for many, excessive intake can disrupt mineral ion homeostasis, increasing the risk of kidney stone disease." – Dr. R. Ahmad, Frontiers in Endocrinology     Segment 4: Foods High & Low in Oxalates Knowing which foods to eat or limit is key.   High-Oxalate Foods (If You're at Risk)  Spinach, Swiss chard, beet greens  Beets, rhubarb, sweet potatoes  Almonds, peanuts, cashews  Blackberries, kiwi, figs  Black tea, cocoa, coffee    Low-Oxalate Foods (Safer Choices)  Kale, mustard greens, cabbage  Cauliflower, cucumbers, zucchini  Apples, bananas, melons, grapes  Milk, yogurt (binds with oxalates)  Eggs, fish, chicken, beef (in moderation)     Segment 5: Actionable Steps to Manage Oxalate & Meat Intake If you're concerned about oxalates or meat-related kidney stones, here's what to do:   Balance Oxalates with Calcium  Eat calcium-rich foods with oxalates to prevent them from forming stones. Cook Your Vegetables  Boiling, steaming, and fermenting reduce oxalates by up to 60%!  Drink Plenty of Water  Staying hydrated flushes out excess oxalates & uric acid.  Don't Overdo Meat Consumption  Limit red meat intake and balance with alkaline foods like vegetables & fruit.  Probiotics for Gut Health  Consider probiotic-rich foods like yogurt and kimchi to help break down oxalates.     Final Thoughts So, should you avoid oxalates? Should you stop eating meat? Not necessarily. The real key is BALANCE. Most people don't need to avoid oxalates entirely, and meat is fine in moderation—as long as you balance it with hydration, alkaline foods, and a gut-friendly diet.     What You'll Learn in This Episode: (00:00:00) Introduction – What are oxalates, and why is everyone talking about them? In his book, “The Patient Ferment of the Early Church”, Alan Kreider offers an explanation of how Christianity took root and grew in the Roman Empire, even though the church was marginalized, despised, and discriminated against. The parallels to the world we find ourselves inhabiting as Christians today is remarkably similar. Kreider explains that four things happened to advance the faith, and I believe we can and should enlist all four in our Christian parenting. First, there was patience. They didn't hurry or push things along. Rather, they patiently trusted God to do His work. Second, they developed habitual behaviors of Christian commitment and character that not only grew their own faith, but offered a compelling witness to the surrounding culture. Third, they were committed to Christian education and worship. And finally, there was a kind of ferment happening as their faith bubbled up out of their inward lives. Let's offer the same kind of compelling witness to our kids.

The New York Rangers are reportedly considering trading two of their key players, Jacob Trouba and Chris Kreider. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Rangers have made it clear they're interested in making moves and shaking up their roster, with Trouba and Kreider's names being mentioned as potential options. Trouba, the Rangers' captain, has responded to the trade rumors, saying he's happy to be in New York and focused on playing hockey. He also mentioned that he hasn't talked to Rangers GM Chris Drury since the rumors surfaced. The potential trade of Trouba and Kreider could be motivated by the Rangers' desire to clear cap space to sign goalie Igor Shesterkin, who is a priority for the team ¹. Trouba has a $8 million cap hit for this and next season, while Kreider has two years left on his contract at $6.5 million per year. Possible trade destinations for Trouba and Kreider could include the Detroit Red Wings, who were previously interested in Trouba, or the Philadelphia Flyers, who might be willing to make a deal despite being a divisional rival. #NYR #bigapplehockey #bah #isles -For more articles and opinions go to X: www.twitter.com/bigapplehockey -Follow us on INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/big_apple_hockey_/ -Listen to the PODCAST on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/big-apple-hockey/id1581692698 -Listen to the PODCAST on Spotify, iHeartRadio, Google Podcasts -Subscribe on YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/c/bigapplehockey -For Big Apple Hockey MERCH buy here: https://www.ebay.com/usr/bigapplehockey Support the channel on TipTopJar: https://tiptopjar.com/bigapplehockey BAH linktree: https://linktr.ee/bigapplehockey Use "BigAppleHockey" on Seat Geek for $20 off your first order! The New York Rangers are hurting, but I think the fans are hurting more. In the last week, the vibes have taken a complete nose dive, and Rangers upper management sent out a major flare to the team, essentially promising moves will be made to swap out players. In a game where you would expect a huge bounce back performance, the Blueshirts confirmed what a lot of people were already saying; something has to change. The players implicated? Jacob Trouba and Chris Kreider- two of their current locker room leaders. In fairness, Kreider was absent from tonight's contest, but the former of those two was a traffic cone all game. We chat with Bruins beat reporter Andrew Fantucchio about the start of the young season. The Bruins of course just fired the St. Louis Blues new head coach Jim Montgomery, as both teams attempt to right the ship after slow starts. Today's episode is sponsored by BetterHelp - use the link below to save on your first subscription!BetterHelp:https://betterhelp.com/broadwayblockInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/broadway_blockTikTok:https://www.tiktok.com/@broadway_blockYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-4OSzH5NKz4EmhVCk0yaZgTwitter:https://twitter.com/Broadway_BlockApple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/broadway-block/id1646160199Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/3KqBFrqn7maexzAnVeqCUH

Alan Kreider. How and why did the early church grow in the first four hundred years despite disincentives, harassment, and occasional persecution? In this unique historical study, veteran scholar Alan Kreider delivers the fruit of a lifetime of study as he tells the amazing story of the spread of Christianity in the Roman Empire. Challenging traditional understandings, Kreider contends the church grew because the virtue of patience was of central importance in the life and witness of the early Christians. They wrote about patience, not evangelism, and reflected on prayer, catechesis, and worship, yet the church grew–not by specific strategies but by patient ferment.https://strengthtostrength.org/the-patient-ferment-of-the-early-church/

Hour 1 The Mets implosion is the story of the day. Reliever Jorge Lopez got tossed from the game, threw his glove into the stands, and then told Steve Gelbs he's on the worst team in MLB. Boomer feels bad for Manager Carlos Mendoza, but Gio said it has to be partly his fault. Gio doesn't feel bad for the manager, he feels bad for the people who sell Mets tickets for a living. Boomer said that Mendoza needed to put his foot down but doesn't have the experience that a Brian Daboll does. Gio said Mendoza is another in a long line of guys that looks great until they get to the Mets. When you come to the Mets, ‘you become an idiot'. In addition to that fun, Edwin Diaz went on the IL and Pete Alonso got drilled in the hand with a pitch. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and has all the audio of the Mets implosion. First up, the Ohtani HR. The SNY booth describes what's happening with Jorge Lopez. Carlos Mendoza reacts. Lopez said he didn't regret it because he's on the worst team in MLB. Edwin Diaz talked about his shoulder tightness. The Yankees beat the Angels as Luis Gil pitched 8 innings of 2 hit ball. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer is having problems with his earpiece Hour 2 The Mets hit the pinnacle of disaster with yesterday's performance against the Dodgers everything that was said after the game. At least we know where the Mets stand between now and the trade deadline, which is now 8 weeks away. Mets fans have to be desensitized to all of this now after all of these years. If you believe in David Stearns, he is now going to be in full control of blowing this up. This is probably going to be the best thing for Stearns. Jerry returns for an update and has audio from 2 years ago where Boomer & Gio are excited about Steve Cohen and the Mets. We heard from Howie Rose as the Mets lost to the Dodgers. After the game, reliever Jorge Lopez said he did not regret his actions because he's on the worst team in MLB. Francisco Lindor called a team meeting after the game. The Yankees beat the Angels as Alex Verdugo hit a HR. There was also an infield fly/interference double play on the Yankees which Aaron Boone called ‘wonky'. He was tossed for arguing. Jerry has audio of Sal telling a caller to ‘kiss my ass'. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about LPGA golfer Charley Hull and how she was photographed smoking a cigarette. Boomer invited Al to tonight's Rangers game but that is completely out of Al's comfort zone.  Hour 3 Boomer really wants to take Al to the Rangers game tonight but he has no interest in going. Boomer expects tonight's game to be super intense. We took a lot of calls from Rangers fans that wanted to change up the lines and the power play. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the disaster that is the Mets. We heard from Howie Rose as reliever Jorge Lopez tossed his glove into the stands. Boomer found out that Lopez's son is waiting for an organ transplant so he understands what he might be going through. Luis Gil threw 8 innings of 1-run ball as the Yankees beat the Angels. Quinnen Williams just found out that this is Aaron Rodgers' 20th season in the NFL. UFC fighter Sean Strickland went all in on Tom Brady for the way he behaved at the roast. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer got a tumbler with a bluetooth speaker in it. A caller coming up for Darryl Strawberry's jersey retirement went through a litany of Mets disasters over the years.  Hour 4 Boomer said Matthew Tkachuk called out Chris Kreider and now he needs to respond tonight. Gio said the first goal scored tonight will be huge to set the tone. We also talked about the Mets and Gio said David Stearns is going to give this team a colon cleanse. Everyone will be gone. Hour 1 The Rangers lost in OT as the Panthers even the series 2-2. We all expected this series to go seven games and we seem to be on track for that. The concerning thing for the Rangers is they are being outshot at a rate of 2-to-1. Boomer was impressed with Igor making more incredible saves last night. Game 5 is now the pivotal game and the Rangers cannot lose this one tomorrow night. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with the sounds of the Rangers losing in Florida. The Yankees lost to the Angels. Evan Roberts has had it with baseball giveaways only going to a certain number of ticket holders. The Mets lost a double header to the Dodgers yesterday. The Timberwolves beat the Mavericks to stay alive and we heard from Kyrie Irving. In the final segment of the hour, Joey Gallo is the father of the baby who we originally thought was Mark Davis'. There are also rumors that Dov Kleiman sold his Twitter account to a farming engagement expert of some sort. A caller compares the Rangers/Panthers series to Rocky IV.  Hour 2 We talked more about the Rangers loss and took a lot of calls. Many people are disappointed in the top 3 Rangers not producing at all in the series. A caller thinks the Rangers players need to take mushrooms before the game for mental clarity. Jerry is here for an update but first we talked about Gary Bettman's radio show from a number of years ago. Jerry has the sounds from Florida Panthers radio as they beat the Rangers. The Yankees lost to the Angels. The Mets lost a double header and Howie Rose has no idea who to name as the ‘Top Dog of the Game'. Jerry has audio of a couple of broadcasters on a hot mic, but they are not aware they are on the air. The T-Wolves stayed alive with a win over the Mavericks. Josh Hart was on the Pivot podcast and talked about playing for Tom Thibodeau. In the final segment of the hour, Jason Kelce and his wife had a run in with a drunk woman who wanted a picture. Boomer said they should have just taken a quick pic and be done with it.  Hour 3 Daryl Strawberry is going to have his day this weekend with the Mets, but it's terrible timing since the Mets are so bad right now. Even Darren from The 7-Line suggests focusing on other hobbies while the Mets are so terrible. At least they're not in between good and bad. They are definitely bad. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with a preview of Rangers/Panthers tonight at 8pm. We heard some play by play as Dallas beat Edmonton in the NHL playoffs. He was seen in a luxury box with her a few times over the years. She is indeed pregnant, but it is not Mark Davis' baby. She has a boyfriend that's not 70 years old. Gio said people in the media hate Dov Kleiman because he takes their stuff and doesn't give them credit. At the Dallas Mavericks game, Patrick Mahomes was cheered but Travis Kelce was booed. The Yankees are just humming along but you have to expect to go deep into the playoffs. Jerry returns for an update, but first, Gio is being inducted into the Suffolk Hall of Fame on Thursday. Listen in as the Ranger Ed boys cover the last four games of the season against the New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, Islands once more, and the Ottawa Senators. Rangers finish the season 1st in the Metropolitan division and 1st in the NHL securing their 4th Presidents trophy in Francise history as well as home ice for the playoffs. Kreider nets in 39 goals this year and Panarin 49, both fall 1 goal short of hitting some big milestones. A lot to be grateful for this year as a fan but the quest for the cup is not over as we patiently wait to see who our first-round opponent will be.Follow Us:Instagram: @rangers_ed.podYoutube: Rangers Ed.
