This week in The Armory we welcome ILLEXXANDRA of the Vitamin B crew in Brooklyn to the 1s and 2s. For her Armory mix, ILLEXXANDRA brings together the world of classic ghetto breaks with the homegrown NYC-area sounds of Jersey club tracks and ballroom vogue, New Orleans bounce, and UK underground club music. Press play. Get down. Brooklyn-based DJ/producer ILLEXXANDRA brings a consistently fun party vibe, drawing from the worlds of funk, UK future sound, global bass, electro swing, and classic club culture. I feel like we haven't done a show this... stable?... in more than 6 months. Planning is caring, for my own sanity and for the ears of the discerning radio listener. The seed of this show was leftovers from the previous week (the dreaded 5th to 1st Thursday no-gap!). But toss in the unfortunate death of Dave Brubeck and some choice new material, and we get a program far superior--far more structurally sound--than the previous week. And then for the next show, December 20, we're returning to anti-radio! Download | Podcast Bold text indicates relatively new releases (including reissues and comps). The Dave Brubeck Quartet - "Blue Rondo a la Turk" (from Time Out) The Nice - "Rondo" (from The Thoughts Of Emerlist Davjack) Le Orme - "Blue Rondo a la Turk" (from L'Aurora Delle Orme) James Cotton - "Midnight Creeper" (from Midnight Creeper (Live in Montreal 1967)) Grouse discusses the Blue Rondo Formula of prog rock songwriting The Dave Brubeck Quartet - "Strange Meadow Lark" (from Time Out) The Dave Brubeck Quartet - "Unsquare Dance" (from Time Further Out) Van Shipley - "Jan Pahechan Ho" (from Bollywood Steel Guitar) M. No fun! Ike Bennet & the Crystalites - "Illya Kuryakin" (from Trojan Rocksteady Box Set) Mr. Confuse - "Lookout Weekend" (from Feel the Fire)
DJs Shakey and Barney ILLer have a combined total of 20 years of Burning Man experience under their belts, and breakbeat on the playa has been a huge influence on them since the beginning. As long-time fans of Space Cowboys, they are very excited to join in on the RIPEcast action and represent for New York. "Breaks" encompasses a wide spectrum of music out east, and Shakey and Barney iLLer have tried to cover a lot of that territory in this week's mix -- with funky breaks, funky house, Baltimore club, ghetto breaks, ragga, hip-hop, rare groove, and jungle. DJ Shakey is a professional DJ and staple of the Manhattan and Brooklyn underground scenes. She stays dedicated to both new-school and old-school culture, simultaneously running The Warper Party, New York's biggest electronic music showcase, and also vinyl diggers' favorite Shakey's Record Fair. Shakey has a legendary record collection, and is a contributing writer at Controllerism.com. Together with Barney iLLer, Shakey recently had funky breaks remixes presented through Boogie Boutique (UK), and was featured on Jon Kwest's Winter Moombah Conference compilation. They have played major venues across the world, including The Room in Tokyo, Sound Channel and Union in Osaka, and the Button Factory in Dublin. Barney Iller is the renaissance man of DJs, playing and producing just about any genre you can think of. He's recently produced an album cut for MC Zulu coming out this year, and a ghetto breaks track for Dutch-Caribbean group Kuenta i Tambu. As his tropical alias Guapo Feo, he's released remixes recently for Gato Preto and DJ Tack & DJ Tamalero through TropicalBass records, and was recently featured on the compilation Rot10 Invades Miami vol. 2. Along with Austin's DJ Orion, he founded the OG Series of moombahcore EPs, with the 3rd installation due shortly. Guapo Feo's "Oro En Polvo" was named best track of the 2011 by Caballo at TropicalBass.com, and his "Heartache" was named as one of 2011's Most Underrated Music by Marcus Dowling. Barney iLLer is a regular sight at the Brooklyn underground's best parties and venues, as well as prominent east coast Burning Man events (Disorient, Kostume Kult, PEX, Decompression, Figment, regional burns). He has played all over Burning Man, including Root Society, Dustfish, Basshenge, PEX, Kostume Kult, Disorient, Nexus, Burners Without Borders, Dirty Beetles, Black Rock Boutique, and Tsunami Bass Experience, and arts cars the Janky Barge, the Bump Bed, A Cavallo, the Dodo, the Nautilus, and more. He is a resident of the infamous and long-running Rubulad party in NYC and a member of the Mischief crew in DC, as well as the newest resident DJ of the Vitamin B party in NYC. He is a member of BMIR and the Plug 4 camp at Burning Man, and also hosts the Jungle Revival! party alongside DJ Shakey. For more information on DJ Shakey visit http://djshakey.com. Duke Shin & Nate Manic LIVE @ Resonate v.6 Mar 19 2011 (1:32:53)The 6th edition of Resonate sold out the entirety of Metro/Smart Bar, bringing the burner vibe to Chicago's most venerable live music venue and subterranean club. For the 4th year in a row, myself and Nate Manic brought the unpredictable spectacle that is a Bad Advice Bear tag team set, but this time closing out the Freakeasy-enhanced Smart Bar. Colorful jellyfish installations hung from the ceiling around the dance floor. The lounge area was completely decked out as an interactive environment perfect for hardcore lounging (and dare I say cuddle puddles?). Framed, illuminated hologram pictures of Indian deities hung from the back wall behind the booth in front of the usual BZA-designed mural. And the crowd? Lordy, lordy, lordy. Following the blistering bass rumbling of Radiohiro and MC Zulu, from 3:30-5am, in front of a packed house, this is the result... Enjoy!DUKE01. Portuguese brothers Leo (Dizzycutter) and Bruno (Mushug) have been working on their respective musical projects for over a decade, but it was only last year when they were asked play a show in their home city of Lisbon for local crew Conspira that they joined forces to form live/production outfit Octo Push. Since then the duo have found themselves increasingly in demand, remixing the likes of Jahcoozi, Buraka Som Sistema and DJ C, gigging from Glade Festival to Fabric, and even catching the ear of Thom Yorke with their highly kinetic blend of garage, techno, IDM, Afrobeat and bashment. Octa Push made their vinyl debut this summer, launching Monkey Steak's Steak House imprint by way of a split EP with fellow Lisbon resident Mr Gasparov. This month sees the release of a white-hot three-tracker for Lisbon/Barcelona-based Iberian Records featuring the vocal talents of Cape Verde's Toni Clean and Panamanian-born MC Zulu, as well as the inclusion of their track Quebu Sabe on Soul Jazz Record's Steppa's Delight 2 compilation. They're also due to feature on Fabric's forthcoming release Elevator Music Vol I. This live set was recorded on the Overkill stage at Glade 2009 as part of a showcase for Bristol's Ruffnek Diskotek (Octa Push appearing alongside Heatwave, Monkey Steak, Ghislain Poirier and MC Zulu, and Tim Dub Boy). Leo and Bruno tell us that their live act will undergo something of a transformation over the coming months, so track them down if they're playing a gig near you and find out what they've got in store. ^ Deixa by Octa Push is out now on Iberian Records
MAKE MINE A MADERA WITH A TWIST Continuing the occasional series where we ask musicians to make us a mix tape of what is currently floating their musical boat, this week Sao Paolo based Afrobeat outfit BIXIGA 70 do the honours. In the words of compiler/musician Mauricio Fleury: "I put two Brazilian tracks that were written by Pedro Sorongo, plus a Cumbia that influenced us a lot in the album, an Angolan Semba and our track 'Mil Vidas' from the last album in the end, so it's a little about Afro-Latin-Brazilian influences and a track that mixes all that”
