Exploring St. Eustatius: Caribbean's Hidden Gem for Adventure and HistoryThe tiny island of St. Eustatius, affectionately known as Statia, is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Travel writer Katherine Parker Magyar recently visited this Dutch Caribbean gem and shared her experiences on the Tripcast 360 podcast, revealing why Statia should be on every traveler's radar. At just 11.8 square miles, Statia may be small, but it packs a big punch when it comes to natural beauty, adventure, and history. Katherine was drawn to the island's reputation for world-class scuba diving and the allure of the newly opened Golden Rock Resort. As a travel writer, she's always eager to explore under-the-radar destinations, and Statia certainly fits the bill. One of the island's main attractions is the Quill, a dormant volcano that offers spectacular hiking opportunities. She describes her experience hiking to the crater: "It's really cool once you get to the bottom of the quill because you've got these ancient growth forests and there's trees with different mystical significance that you sort of sense or feel when you're down there." The hike can be challenging, but the views and unique ecosystem make it well worth the effort.Statia's underwater world is equally impressive. The island is part of a protected marine park, which has resulted in flourishing coral reefs and abundant marine life. Katherine raves about her diving experience: "It was spectacular. We went around. We saw a couple wrecks. What really stood out to me... is that the coral reef is flourishing. And sadly, when you scuba dive in a lot of places these days, you know, you're used to seeing the coral reef being half dead."But Statia isn't just about natural wonders. The island's rich history is evident in its well-preserved capital, Oranjestad. She took a walking tour with local guide Misha Spanner, who brought the island's past to life. "It's amazing how many different historic monuments. I think they have the second oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere," Katherine notes. The tour also touched on the island's connection to the American Revolution and its once-thriving role as a major trading hub.One of the most intriguing aspects of Statia's history is the legend of the blue beads. These beads were once used as currency during slavery times, and when slavery was abolished, they were thrown into the sea. Legend has it that if you find a blue bead on the island, you're destined to return. This story perfectly encapsulates the mystical allure of Statia and the deep connection many visitors feel to the island.Katherine was particularly impressed by the warmth and pride of the local people. Despite its small size, Statia is home to a diverse population representing over 20 nationalities. Yet, there's a strong sense of unity and island pride. As Johnson Johnrose, a former resident, explains, "There is this love for island that you can't find anywhere else. They see the Statia flag anywhere and it brings this unmistakable joy in the people there."For travelers looking to experience Statia, Katherine highly recommends staying at the Golden Rock Resort. The property offers luxurious accommodations, including private cottages, and serves as an excellent base for exploring the island. The resort can also arrange various activities, from scuba diving to historical tours. While Support the showTripCast360 --- It's all about travel, lifestyle and entertainment.Web: TripCast360.com.Twit: https://twitter.com/TripCast360FB: https://www.facebook.com/TripCast360Insta: https://www.instagram.com/tripcast360/

Join Strictly Facts as we sit down with Dr. Gregory Richardson from the Instituto Pedagogico Arubano to unveil the intricate layers of Aruba's history and culture. Dr. Richardson, a notable educator and researcher, sheds light on how Aruba's unique status within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, known as status aparte, was realized in 1986. Together, we explore the island's indigenous roots, colonial legacy from Spain, Britain, and the Netherlands, and the powerful role activism has played in shaping Aruba's identity today. Our conversation takes a deeper look into the political and cultural dynamics that have defined Aruba and the wider Dutch Caribbean over the years. We discuss the island's linguistic diversity, where Dutch serves as the language of instruction, yet Papiamento and Spanish hold cultural significance. The 1970s brought waves of calls for autonomy, and we dissect Gilberto François "Betico" Cruz's crucial leadership in achieving Aruba's separate status. As we navigate through the 2010 restructuring of the Dutch Caribbean and the ongoing debate over independence, we draw parallels with the situation in Puerto Rico and reflect on the complex identities that emerge from these small island societies. The episode crescendos with an exploration of Aruba's vibrant cultural expressions. Dr. Richardson helps us understand how the island's cultural practices are acts of autonomy, allowing Arubans to assert their identity beyond political boundaries. Experience the rich tapestry of Aruba's culture, where music and language are not just modes of expression but also tools of cultural assertion in this fascinating journey into Aruba's heart and soul.Dr Gregory Richardson is an educator and researcher at the Instituto Pedagogico Arubano (Aruba), a part time lecturer at the University of Aruba and a postdoc researcher at the The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) . Curators Shereen Lafhaj and Makiya Davis-Bramble unwrap the underrepresented history of Indian indenture in the British Caribbean in the 19th and 20th centuries, through Richard Fung's 2012 documentary film, Dal Puri Diaspora. Plus, artist Salina Jane, and Chandani Persaud, tuck into contemporary Indo-Caribbean and Trinidadian food and culture in London today. In Dal Puri Diaspora, filmmaker Richard Fung travels from Toronto to Trinidad, and Guyana to India, tracing the migrations - and many variations - of a dish often called Caribbean or West Indian roti. After the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, British and Dutch Caribbean plantation owners still required cheap labour and, having successfully petitioned the British government, recruited indentured workers from India. Over 450,000 men and women would make the five month journey by boat, working for three to five years in return for transport, a minimal wage and some basic provisions, until the scheme's end in 1917. Yet whilst 2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the Windrush migrations, these stories of Caribbean migration remain comparatively overlooked in British histories. Shereen Lafhaj and Makiya Davis-Bramble, curators of Indo + Caribbean, explore the reasons why workers decided to leave India, and how we can curate complex histories of opportunity, restriction, and resistance. They share personal experiences informed by caste, gender, and women's agency, and how museums might use AI to fill the gaps in the archive. Artist Salina Jane highlights how Indo-Caribbeans connect with their heritage today, sharing sugar cane and cocoa drawn from her own growing allotment, and Kew Gardens in South London. Plus, Chandani Persaud looks at the evolution of food and labour in the local community - from suppression to celebration and commercialisation in Western cultures - highlighting how colonialism still shapes tastes and identities. Indo + Caribbean: The creation of a culture runs at the Museum of London Docklands in London until 19 November 2023. SE's (Sales Engineers or System Engineers) are an essential part of a typical account team, referred to as ‘The Brains' by Andy and without them - it's incredibly difficult to get deals across the line. It's becoming increasingly more common for customers and those new to implementing MEDDIC to ask ‘Should we include SE's on our MEDDPICC adoption journey?' You already know what we think: MEDDIC is best adopted when it's applied as a common language. And in this episode, the Med Men give their verdict. Watch this episode to find out more about this all-important topic. If there's something you'd like Pim and Andy to discuss in the next episode of MEDMEN, comment below!Until then, May your Champions be strong! *Who are Pim Roelofsen and Andy Whyte?**Pim Roelofsen*Born and raised in the Netherlands, Pim lived in the Dutch Caribbean and London, before making the move back home.Having been involved in tech sales for 10 years, Pim is passionate about MEDDICC and is a big believer that more organizations should adopt the qualification framework for sales and beyond. -- I'm a journalism grad who had a "first life" in magazine journalism, and freelance marketing-communications work in Canada; however, with the arrival of my daughter Julia, now 26, I made a mid-life career change into Montessori teaching. Since 2002, I've been a classroom teacher at Sint Maarten Montessori School in the Dutch Caribbean. -- I absolutely LOVE encouraging kids and, really, EVERYone to find their Inner Poet! One of the great satisfactions of a life in words is the knowledge that 17 of my current and former students, ages 9 to 19, have also become published writers and poets -- and we're just getting started
THE BOYS ARE BACK.. and with a bang! SDRs, we all love them.. they are a vital part of our sales process and the way in which we interact with customers. They're typically the first point of contact for customers too. In the same breath, they're usually the newest to the industry in which they're working in, and the newest to the product that they're selling.. So why is it that we task them with this great responsibility of capturing a prospects attention, without setting them up for success with a qualification framework? Watch this episode to find out just some of the reasons why MEDDIC can help not only the business but SDRs too, whether that's applying some of the methodology to identify and contact Champions, being able to identify pain and introduce metrics in discovery or setting up your SDR for early success as they inevitably prepare to move up the ladder to an AE role. Dominic and Cymene begin this week's episode with a medley of Hawaiian experiences, everything from 25-foot waves to energy utopias to whether watching Sharknado can actually help someone overcome fear of sharks. Then, we welcome to the podcast the brilliant Dr. Daphina Misiedjan from Erasmus University Rotterdam (https://www.eur.nl/en/people/daphina-misiedjan) to help us better understand the evolving legal and cultural debates concerning Rights of Nature. Daphina surveys the places around the world where Rights of Nature has become an active political discussion, beginning with Ecuador and its pathbreaking constitutional recognition of Pachamama. We talk about the challenges Rights of Nature interventions face in overcoming European colonial law and legal principles like terra nullius that naturalize extractivist and individualistic property relations. We compare Rights of Nature movements to Universal Human Rights movements and discuss where rights meet obligations. We turn from there to Daphina's research on Yemen, the first country projected to run out of drinking water. We talk about the ethical questions raised by endemic water shortages in places like Yemen, South Africa and California. We close on Daphina's current work on climate justice in the Dutch Caribbean, where colonialism and climate change are intersecting in an increasingly troubling way. Enjoy!! P.S. Here's a teaser for our next episode: https://play.half.earth

Sharks are beautiful animals, and if you're lucky enough to see lots of them, that means that you're in a healthy ocean. You should be afraid if you are in the ocean and don't see sharks- Sylvia Earle Welcome to another great episode of the Caribbean Ocean Perspectives Series featuring Tadzio Bervoets, Director of the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance, a Network Organization that supports nature conservation on all six islands of the Dutch Caribbean and is involved in ensuring that some of the region's well-known MPAs such as the Bonaire National Marine Park and the Saba National Marine Park receive the necessary capacity and financial support. Tadzio recently co-founded the Caribbean Shark Coalition (CSC) in 2020 in response to international calls for enhanced, collaborative conservation efforts for sharks and rays in the Greater Caribbean region. The CSC is a collection of member experts from NGOs, local communities, intergovernmental organizations and governments, academia, and policy institutes working together to advance the study and conservation of sharks and rays found in the waters of the Greater Caribbean. The CSC has as its major goals and mission: To foster collaboration in shark and ray research, policy, and capacity building for conservation among stakeholders in the region, and to provide opportunities for knowledge transfer and data synthesis; To safeguard the long-term health of shark and ray populations in the region, and to promote the protection of critical habitat; To promote a sustainable future for these species as well as human livelihoods who depend on them. To effectively address ongoing and future areas of conservation and species management plans for countries and territories in the Greater Caribbean region; Greater collaboration and capacity building is fostered among and between actors and stakeholders in the Greater Caribbean region. Working with local scientists, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), intergovernmental organizations and governments, we target capacity building for filling critical knowledge gaps through science, as well as the advancement of specific conservation actions. Tadzio is the first Dutch Caribbean Member of the Explorers Club for his contribution to Science in the Wider Caribbean Region and he is an experienced dive instructor who has recently started to use closed-circuit rebreathers to enhance his coral reef monitoring activities. In this episode, we discuss the importance of sharks in the Caribbean, the threats they face, data collection on shark populations and the role of the Caribbean Shark Coalition and the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance in protecting these species. Philip Lassiter spent his early years in Mobile, Alabama. He was the son of a white pentecostal preacher. “They clapped on one and three in my father's church,” he says. Moving to Peoria, Illinois as a teenager was a revelation for him. As he tells it, “They beat the racist out of me in Peoria.” Lassiter's story, both musical and personal, is a bit hard to unravel. He somehow managed to pay dues in multiple scenes seemingly at the same time. Philip's has been a hero's journey. Blink once and you'll find him in the “Afrocentric” Dallas music scene running the band at a large church, mentoring a young Michael League during the inception of Snarky Puppy. Blink again, and you'll find him doing the New York hustle. Turn around and he's still there, this time living in Nashville. But what's this? Then he's an LA cat, writing arrangements for gospel and r&b records. Wait! Now he's an expat, living in Holland and raising a family with his Dutch Caribbean wife (the talented singer Josje). Phil is a trumpet player, arranger, band leader, teacher, songwriter, cat. His first major recording opportunities were on gospel records, and he has done arrangements for dozens of major praise and worship albums and artists. Eventually that work led him to do arrangements for pop, r&b and soul artists as well. His sound is identifiable, punchy, funky, funny, narrative, empathetic - in fact, you've probably heard his sound so often that you take it for granted. It's that sound; the sound of a horn section hooking up a record, elevating a production, bringing the project to life in such a natural way that you almost can't imagine the song without it. Philip wrote for and toured with Prince as his trumpet player and section leader, and he has worked with a full roster of other top notch musicians as well. Most notably Ariana Grande, Chris Cornell, Kirk Franklin, Timbaland, Roberta Flack, Jill Scott, Kelly Rowland, Fantasia, Anderson. Paak, Yelawolf, Queen Latifa, Al Jarreau, Fred Hammond, The Isley Brothers and Ledisi. Why does he get called so much? “People ask me how did you get this gig or that gig. I always tell them, ‘I didn't get the gig. The gig got me.'” Lassiter recently released his fifth solo album, Live In Love, a collection of nasty grooves and thoughtful messages, a love letter to his former life in Los Angeles, a manifestation for a better America, and a gathering of collaborators from around the world.
Faye Lawand grew up in conflict in Lebanon. As did her parents and her grandparents. It took her decades to understand that that unresolved conflict was stored in her body and causing physical, emotional, and mental pain. As time went on, Faye found herself constantly sick with respiratory infections, compounding depleting conditions, chronic knee pain, headaches, back…PTSD, anxiety, depression. Shortly after turning 40, she got diagnosed with some pre-cancerous cells. She arrived at a cross points and realized she could go one of two ways. Either she can: Continue on her current path (= predictable outcome) Carve out a new path for herself Because the truth is: Emotions (when not expressed) get locked in our nervous system and muscles in the body. Faye noted that for her, it was not surprising that with so much unresolved sadness, that it would show up in her lungs. “At some point, it has to show up…” Faye found that it is very challenging to be the way she wanted to be in life when she was experiencing chronic pain. It took her years to realize, “Our mind lives in our body.” “The mind is always speaking to us through the body.” In order to say alive, these stuck emotions need fuel - they need to be fed which takes energy. And so they feed off of us. This is why we feel tired, burnt out, & exhausted (vacuum law of prosperity). This is happening at a subconscious-level underneath the surface. You have to move the internal conflicts to make space for something else (aka whatever it is that we do want). “Just because you're not aware, doesn't mean that it's not happening.” Faye was looking for a solution that was: Easy Quick Natural; and Had no side-effects So she ruled out surgery, medications, therapy. Which is where hypnosis came into play. In her first hypnosis session, she was asked to go back to the source and she went back to when she was 5 years old fleeing Lebanon at 2am with her mother… You'll have to hear Faye tell the story for herself because it is remarkable. Even though she had a deep hypnotic experience, she said to her friend, “This is SO B.S.! How could anything that happened 35 years ago relate to my current state?!” But as we know, what we RESIST, PERSISTS. It took Faye some time to integrate what she experienced in her session and once she did, her transformation was significant. This podcast episode contains such a wealth of wisdom and information! Some things we discussed are: Pain is a communicator Our minds are sponges We feed ourselves with what is around us Are our [mental] stories truths? If your story is truth, great! And if not, then you now have an internal conflict. Welcome to the radio magazine that brings you news, commentary and analysis from a Black Left perspective. I'm Margaret Kimberley, along with my co-host Glen Ford. Coming up: The post-colonial regime in Zimbabwe was determined to, literally, keep Black women in their place. We'll speak with an author who has studied that era. And, a new book details how sex was a leading item of political discussion among anti-colonial activists in the Dutch West Indies. But first -- Before famed Black Power advocate Stokely Carmichael changed his name to Kwame Ture, he made a big impression on freedom organizations in Africa – some of it good, some not so favorable. Back in 1967, Carmichael took part in several conferences on the continent, and offered a critique of how the Black Liberation movement was going on the continent. Toivi Asheeke is a post-doctoral fellow in the sociology department at Vassar College. He wrote an article titled, ““Black Power and Armed Decolonization in Southern Africa: Stokely Carmichael, the African National Congress of South Africa, and the African Liberation Movements.” Rudo Mudiwa is a Phd in Communication and Culture, and currently a Research Fellow at Princeton University. Mudiwa is a native of Zimbabwe, and is critical of how the Black government that replaced white rule treated Black women. Dr. Mudiwa wrote a recent article titled, “Stop the Woman, Save the State. Policing, Order, and the Black Woman's Body.” In the years after World War Two, sex was the big topic of discussion among pro-independence activist in the Dutch Caribbean colonies of Aruba and Curaçao New York City University History professor Chelsea Shield has studied this era, and written a book titled “Offshore Attachments: Oil and Intimacy after Empire.” We at Black Agenda Report had never heard of a colonial struggle in which sexual issues – including prostitution – played such an important role.

Bright young things. This episode Tiffany Godoy is joined by Rushemy Botter and Lisi Herrebrugh, the two fresh faces at the helm of Nina Ricci. Starting right at the very beginning, the couple tell a story of how they came together in both their personal and professional lives: shared roots, shared values and shared vision that have been key to establishing their own Antwerp-based brand Botter. The designer duo talk of conceptual looks, grounded in practical construction. Dutch-Caribbean laid-back precision. How do they ‘keep the joy’ whilst turning attention to more serious matters? It’s about staying grounded whilst flying high. Naïve? Perhaps, but these two seem to have found the connection between seemingly opposing ideas – and it’s working out just fine.

Now where have I put the car keys? A Japanese neuro-scientist believes a regular brain 'workout' can improve the lives, and the memories, of older people who might otherwise fall victim to dementia; Italy's planning to tell the UN Security Council next week that the country's in urgent need of more help in dealing with the tide of migrants washing up on its shores - we're in a port in Sicily where boatloads of them now arrive almost every day; the authorities in Saudi Arabia show our correspondent round a high security jail near Riyadh where, they say, they are succeeding in reforming extremists from ISIS and al-Qaeda; farmer suicides in India - many possible reasons are cited for their decisions to kill themselves but it's clear that distress among the agricultural community is part of a wider malaise afflicting the countryside. And on the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba there's increasing concern about the snake population's tendency to go hitch-hiking!
DJs Shakey and Barney ILLer have a combined total of 20 years of Burning Man experience under their belts, and breakbeat on the playa has been a huge influence on them since the beginning. Along with Austin's DJ Orion, he founded the OG Series of moombahcore EPs, with the 3rd installation due shortly.
