B. Cox reviews Main Source's classic debut album 1991's Breaking Atoms. It was a wildly creative and sonically pleasing debut combining the exploits of twin brother DJs K-Cut and Sir Scratch along with emcee and soon to be legendary producer Large Professor. Behind funky and soulful sample based beats teamed up with Large Professor's prolific rhymes, the album tackled issues such failed relationships, emcee double crossing, police brutality, violence in the community and even featured the now-fabled debut of an unknown MC named Nas on a track that would be become more popular than the album itself. Initially rated a 4.5 Mic album by The Source upon release, the critically acclaimed album was re-rated as a 5 Mic Classic and named as one of the Best 100 Albums by the publication upon later editions. Most hip-hop fans are familiar with XXL's annual "Freshman" class of up-and-coming rappers. As rap music--and its fans--get older, we thought it would be fun to discuss which rappers are part of the Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes. In this episode, we try to answer the following questions: What does it it take to become an Upperclassmen? What keeps hip-hop Freshman from moving on to the next class and into long-term success? What does a mature hip-hop career look like? Whose next to graduate? We also highlight a documentary that served as an inspiration for this episode: "Adult Rappers." The film features older, independent hip-hop artists discussing what it's like to continue to follow their dreams of making music in their 30s, 40s and 50s. Definitely check it out--it will give you a totally new perspective on the work it takes to be a working artist. The hour-long film can be viewed on YouTube and Vimeo.   Lastly, we give a quick shoutout to Camp Brooklyn Fund, a nonprofit that raises money to send low-income kids living in Brooklyn to summer camp in Upstate New York. It's a great organization that helps kids get out of the city and into nature. Michael from Camp Brooklyn joins us in the beginning of the episode to talk about their latest fundraising initiatives: a gala and silent auction. Visit CampBrooklyn.org for more info. Thanks to our special guests, Michael and Marques, for coming on the show.

Expect the unexpected and explore ‘The Abyss’ in this special episode of ‘Oonops Drops’ on Brooklyn Radio. One of Oonops’ first mixtapes ‘Nightmare On Beatstreet’ inspired him to do this remake with even more mysterious and gloomy music. It’s like an overlength mixed soundtrack chock full of unease and uncertain feelings. He teamed up with dj and producer Smoove from the UK (Wack Records, Jalapeno) and his homie Skaetch (Daily Concept) who round off the whole show with their own interpretations of this topic. As ever – vinyl only. Have a spooky and melancholic time.

Though now splitting her time between Miami and Brooklyn, XLR8R’s “artist to watch” Jubilee will always be Brooklyn’s bass sweetheart. Known for her rambunctious combination of upfront bass music, UK house, and tropical flavors, she has become a surefire remedy for ailing dancefloors around the globe. Co-opting her name from the X-Men character who shot fireworks out of her hands, Jubilee works similar magic when she steps into the DJ booth.

But she’s also simply Jess, the one-time South Florida raver who grew up obsessively listening to Miami bass on the radio and dancing the night away at underground breaks parties. After making the move to NYC, she quickly infiltrated the DJ circuit and began turning heads with her knowledge of all things bass. It’s the sweet mix of underground bass and tropical vibes that brings Jubilee from clubs and warehouse parties to the comfort of your own home. Her radio show Fireworks, on both Brooklyn Radio and Electric Soundstage (iHeartRadio’s new electronic station), continuously features fellow global producers such as Sinden, Bok Bok, Mike Q, and Star Eyes. Prior to Fireworks, she has DJed on East Village Radio and put together well received guest mixes for “The Mix Up” on Australia’s Triple J Radio and XLR8R Magazine’s esteemed podcast series. You can also find Jubilee on the production end of things as one half of Bassanovva, a project with Canadian producer Grahmzilla (previously of Thunderheist). The duo’s debut EP, Chicken Lover, dropped this past November on Sinden’s Grizzly label.

Be sure to also check out her Paypur EP with Udachi for the Nightshifters label, an imprint she runs with Jason Forrest (a.k.a. Dj Donna Summer). These days we have also seen official Jubilee remixes for some of the most buzzed about artists- Cubic Zirconia (with Proper Villians), Canblaster, and Creep (with Star Eyes). As if that’s not enough, Jubilee also puts on the infamous Flashing Lights party (with Nick Catchdubs and DJ Ayres); named Best New Party at the Paper Magazine 2010 Nightlife Awards.

Critical recognition is no stranger to Jess- in 2009, Sasha Frere-Jones invited her to perform at the New Yorker Festival—she was the only DJ on the bill. Jubilee regularly DJs throughout the US and Europe, and you will be sure to see a lot more of her bass-loaded fireworks on both sides of the Atlantic.

Atlanta Hip Hop has a rich tradition and history in radio.  It begins with WIGO and WAOK and quickly became stronger in the college radio scene with stations like WRAS (Georgia State) and WREK (Georgia Tech), The Fresh Party on V103 as well as community radio WRFG.  We all know about the stories of Greg Street and Frank Ski. Atlanta is blessed to have had those dynamic DJs help push the scene.  This is the other side of the story, the story of DJs that year after year worked the club  circuit before graduating into ATL radio. In this episode we hear stories from DJs that started their careers on these stations and others that witnessed these careers grow.  We learn more about Lil Jon’s House, Reggae and Hip Hop DJing days, The Beef © between P. Diddy and Atlanta DJs and how early DJs used the radio as a springboard into the Hip Hop industry. Stories heard from: DJ Mars, Smoove Matty Matt, Brian Lassiter, Talib Shabazz, H20, DJ Jaycee, J of Earwax Records, Shannon McCollum, DJ Nabs, Marcel Daniels, DJ Applejac & DJ Mafioso. These episodes first aired on Brooklyn Radio in late 2010 and early 2011.  They are being offered as a podcast, as promised, for free.  The film version of this documentary is in production. Thanks for listening. This episode we’re into the early- mid 1990’s in Atlanta Hip Hop.  So-So-Def, Rowdy and LaFace records begin to take shape alongside the Bass music scene and the underground.  Gang activities and curfews have had an impact on Atlanta Hip Hop and the Break-dancing scene has ground nearly to a halt.  Graffiti writers, MCs, DJs and producers are still active. Again, this episode concentrates on the early energy surrounding the underground with ciphers featuring Killer Mike aka Mike Bigga as well as Jermaine Dupri’s So-So-Def and Dallas Austin’s Rowdy records. We begin with a look at one segment of the Atlanta underground as it pertains to the growth of what becomes strong National-impacting labels.  As we continue this journey, we’ll delve into the Bass scene, the strip club/neighborhood and college scenes. Voices heard: Shannon McCollum, H20 of Mass Influence and Yall So Stupid, Top Cat of Mass Comm who worked at So-so-Def and with Atlanta’s  Elemental Magazine before it left the city, Divinity Roxx and DJ Nabs. This is part of a series that aired on BrooklynRadio.net in late 2010 and early 2011 as a lead up to the Film and full version of this documentary.   As promised, the entire audio series is being podcasted for free.  The film is in production.  We're brainstorming and raising money.   All music featured is from the city of Atlanta: DJ Variable (of the Audubon Society) - Stalk Kriss Kross - Jump TLC - Hat 2 Da back Lyrical Giants (Bonecrusher’s old group) - Country Cousins Yall So Stupid - Van Full of Pakistanis FKi ft Travis Porter - Koo Koo T.I. - Top Back (instrumental) Divinity Roxx - Rebel (Live) Big Boi  ft.
