DRUNKEN MASTER II, known as THE LEGEND OF DRUNKEN MASTER on its belated stateside release, is an absolute high watermark of the kung fu genre. Its classically dazzling choreography would be enough to earn it a place among the all-time best, but its anti-Western/pro-worker plot and artful filming really put it in another tier. At the same time, it works at a very basic level: watching people move like this, and watching their environments change around them, is a fundamentally joyous byproduct of human ingenuity. It's time for part 1 of the Season 2 wrapup: The Mailbag!  Year 2 of Retro Spectives saw many new users join our discord server, and even more in depth discussions.  We argued about whether Super Metroid’s storytelling was too light a touch, whether System Shock’s UI was the worst in existence, and if all JRPGS were literally created by the devil.  In all these instances, though, it was us who was leading the discussion. The mailbag episode gives our listeners a chance to flip this dynamic on its head.  For episode 51 we’ve opened up the floor to our listeners to grill us on any subject they choose, whether related to our time spent playing these games or otherwise.  Big thanks to everyone who submitted questions, keep ‘em coming! On this episode, we discuss:How do Pat and James approach objectivity in how they review video games?  Is it possible to be objective?  Should they strive for objectivity? If there was one game that was ineligible for the podcast that you could force the other person to play, what would it be?And the real heavy hitter: What are Pat and James’ favourite sandwiches? We answer this question and many more on the 51st episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast!---Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherLaurence, The First Vicar: Bloodborne OST - Ryan Amon, Tsukasa Saitoh, Michael Wandmacher, Yuka Kitamura, Cris Velasco, Nobuyoshi SuzukiApocalypsis Noctis Dramatic: FFXV OST - Yoko Shimomura---If you have any questions to ask, games to suggest, or feuds to start, please do drop by our community text based discord server!  We love discussing and arguing over the nitty gritty of video games more than anything else and we’d love to have you join us!

You've heard it's murmurings and felt it in your blood and it's finally here! This week the Save Room proudly presents Bloodboys--a Bloodborne dissection. If you're wondering why we're talking about a 3 year old game for an entire episode in 2018--well don't. 1). It's Backlog season and 2). It's a damn good game. In this episode we go deep into our time with Bloodborne discussing gameplay mechanics, our best strategies, our favorite boss moments, and go mad over the game's deeply engrossing (and grotesque) lore. We also compare it to the other Souls games and how this might be one of the most accessible titles FromSoftware has put out to date. If you were on the fence about this game--let the good blood guide your way. We had a lot of fun putting this one together and we hope you hunters have as much fun listening to it. We'd like to thank our sponsors, Soulsborne and Soulslike and their newest brew, Paleblood IPA. It had us feeling limber and kept us hacking and slashing all through the blood frenzy of the night. And of course, thank you all for listening. ---------------------------------------- All music and soundbtytes courtesy of FromSoftware, Bloodborne, and Sony Entertainment. Main theme "Omen" by Ryan Amon, Tsukasa Smith, Yuka Kitamura, Nobuyoshi Suzukui, Cris Velasco, and Michael Wandmacher.

As we all huddle around the fireplace to escape the wintery weather this week, what better way to pass the time, than to pop on Geektown Radio and catch up with the latest tv news, film info, and listen to an exclusive interview with composer Michael Wandmacher!Michael is an American composer of music for film, television, and video games. His work is an interesting eclectic mix of genres, from films such as 'Drive Angry', ‘Piranha 3D’, ‘Punisher: War Zone’, and 'Ben 10: Alien Swarm' to tv shows such as 'Imaginary Mary', and ‘Night Stalker’ to games like ‘Bloodborne’, and ‘Twisted Metal’. His latest 2 projects are equally polar opposites, as his main tv show day job is providing the music for 80’s period sitcom ‘The Goldbergs’, whilst his latest movie project is ‘Underworld: Blood Wars’, which he takes over from composers Paul Haslinger and Marco Beltrami. If working in tv, film and gaming wasn’t enough, Michael also performs as remixer under the pseudonym "Khursor", remixing popular songs into more cinematic versions for use on tv and film. Below is an example of a remix he did for Sting's ‘Every Breath You Take’, which was featured on the trailer for the 3rd season of 'The Americans'.Also On This Week's Show:We coax Bex out of winter hibernation to chat about the tv shows and films we've been watching including 'The Grand Tour', the 'Crisis On Earth X' DC crossover, and... 'Jonathan Creek'...We take a look at all the latest tv & film news, including a round up of the headlines from the past week, the Quentin Tarantino 'Stark Trek' movie, trouble on the Queen biopic, and Netflix’s ‘The Umbrella Academy’ casting. We give you our recommendations for upcoming TV in the next 7 days. Michael Wandmacher who has scored grindhouse B movie homages like Piranha 3D and Drive Angry brings his hard metal sound to Twisted Metal. We talk about getting his start in the business, his approach in scoring the many characters in this over the top rock score, and discuss the game's feature that allows you to play your own music instead of the in-game music. Michael's scores are extremely fun to listen to and Twisted Metal is no exception. While the tone is less "fun" and more "dark" than his previous scores it's still a hard industrial sound that separates itself from the traditional orchestral sound. This isn't your grandma's score, but Michael is definitely an awesome and fun guy to chat with. Enjoy the interview then go enjoy the game and rock on!

Michael Wandmacher is one of horror’s most in-demand composers, and this year’s he’s scored the latest entries in two successful franchises: The Last Exorcism Part II, and The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia for director Tom Elkins, who began his career as an assistant editor for Wes Craven. Wandmacher has maintained a collaborative relationship with director Patrick Lussier, himself a former editor on Craven’s Scream (1996), Cursed and Red Eye (both 2005), and Lussier’s own directorial efforts – My Bloody Valentine 3D (2009) and Drive Angry 3D (2011) – have resulted in a pair of very strong and distinct scores. In out latest podcast, Wandmacher touches upon working with first-time director Elkins, and how horror scoring no longer includes straight music, but elements of sound design. At the time of our conversation, a label had been approached to release the soundtrack to Lionsgate’s The Haunting in Connecticut: Ghosts of Georgia, and I’ll post further details when Wandmacher’s shape-shifting work is available. Prior interviews at KQEK.com with Michael Wandmacher include discussions on scoring the video game Twisted Metal in 2012; scoring Lussier’s 3D film Drive Angry in 2011; composing the score for Alexander Aja’s Piranha 3D in 2010; and writing music for My Bloody Valentine 3D and his large orchestral score for The Punisher: War Zone in 2009.   If you enjoyed this podcast, connect with us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.
