Parents today are under enormous pressure to protect their children from discomfort, but what if constantly “fixing” anxiety is actually making it worse? In this live conversation, Dr. Nguyen talks with clinical child psychologist Dr. Meredith Elkins on how avoidance fuels anxiety, what keeps families stuck, and how parents can help kids build resilience by facing hard feelings instead of escaping them.

Five listener accounts. Five different parts of the country. Five different decades. And in every one of them, something out there showed an ordinary person, in no uncertain terms, that they were not at the top of the food chain. This episode isn't about quick glimpses through the trees. It's about the slow encounters. The ones where something took its time, where it watched, where it made a deliberate decision about whether or not to let the witness walk away.The first account comes from Dale, a lifelong hunter from Sequim, Washington, who was twenty-three years old in October of 1978 when he climbed into a drainage off the Dosewallips before first light and saw something standing in the fog at the base of the slope. Sixty yards away. Gray-skinned, slope-browed, motionless in a way that no living thing should be able to manage.Dale walked out of those woods that morning and didn't return to any forest for twenty-six years.From there we move to Karen, a young woman from Elkins, West Virginia, who was twenty-four years old in September of 1993 and out for a solo overnight on a loop she'd hiked many times before. At two in the morning, every insect in the Monongahela went silent, something pressed a hand the size of a dinner plate against the wall of her tent, and the heat of a living body radiated through the nylon inches from her face. The next morning she saw what had been standing over her.Brent rides next, a heavy equipment operator out of Athens, Ohio, who was on the OHV trails in the Wayne National Forest with his buddy Cody on a clear October afternoon in 2019. They heard whoops trade across the saddle of a ridge. They turned around to leave. And on the way back down the trail they'd just ridden, they found a fourteen-inch oak laid across the two-track that had not been there forty minutes earlier, with no root ball, drag marks in the dirt, and something watching them from behind a white oak thirty yards uphill.The fourth account is told secondhand by Katelyn, the granddaughter of a northern Wisconsin trapper named Cal, who walked his line on a state forest tract north of the Bois Brule River in October of 1972 and found his sets methodically disabled. A foothold trap hung ten feet up in a hemlock. A marten cubby pried off a maple, turned a hundred and eighty degrees, and re-nailed backwards. A young whitetail arranged on the moss above an otter set, legs folded, head balanced upright, like a chess piece placed for him to find. Then three wood knocks from three different directions.Then a tall, lean, gray-haired figure standing between two pines in the dawn light, watching him with an expression Cal could only describe as tired.The episode closes with Marisol, a freelance photographer who in late August of 2015 hiked into a small alpine lake in the Trinity Alps Wilderness of northern California to shoot the milky way. The wind shifted across the cirque, the smell of a wet animal carried over the water, and through her two-hundred-millimeter zoom she watched something kneel at the far shore, cup water in its palm, drink, and then turn its head and look directly into her lens. A face with a heavy brow, a square jaw, and a small but distinct chin. Eight feet tall when it stood. She broke camp in the fading light and hiked six miles back to the trailhead in the dark, and she has never reviewed the photographs she took that afternoon.What links these five accounts isn't the description of the creature. The descriptions vary. Reddish brown. Gray. Nearly black. Heavy jaw, no chin. Narrower jaw, slight chin. Lean and starved-looking. Massive and barrel-chested. What links them is the aftermath.Every one of these people rearranged their lives around what happened. Hunting careers ended. Backpacking ended. Photography careers pivoted indoors. PROTESTS CONTINUE IN UNITED KINGDOM.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE-----  -International Events-Middle East: The situation deteriorated over the weekend, after President Trump stated that the American blockade would stay in place even after the Iranians removed theirs. In response to this, Iran closed the Strait again, and kinetically targeted two Indian vessels that were in the Strait, attempting to cross it. Yesterday, the United States kinetically struck an Iranian merchant vessel which was attempting to run the American blockade. The M/V TOUSKA was fired upon by the USS Spruance (DDG-111), which engaged the vessel with their deck gun, targeting the engine room. After the shelling, U.S. Marines from the 31st MEU boarded and seized control of the ship.United Kingdom: Protests in Epsom continue to grow despite developments in the case. Epsom police have stated they "have not found any evidence of the offence as reported but the investigation is ongoing".Analyst Comment: Some claims are being made that the crime never took place, or otherwise did not occur as initially described. Nevertheless, this doesn't seem to matter much as most of the population does not believe the authorities' story, and there has not been a clear conveying of the series of events. As a result, protests have continued throughout the area over the past few days, mostly focusing on police accountability and transparency on the crimes that are committed.Mexico: This afternoon a shooting was reported at Teotihuacán, as a man climbed one of the pyramids and began shooting at crowds of tourists. As of this report, the number of causalities has varied, with local media reporting a total of a dozen people wounded by the shooter or otherwise injured during the incident. At least one Canadian tourist was killed by the shooter, who eventually took his own life, ending the incident.-HomeFront-Louisiana: Over the weekend a mass shooting was reported after a domestic disturbance resulted in a man murdering his entire family. Local authorities state that Shamar Elkins targeted his ex-girlfriend at their residence on Harrison Street following a domestic argument. After killing her, he drove W 79th Street, where he murdered his ex's sister, and eight children, seven of which were his own. After the mass-murder, Elkins fled the scene on foot, before carjacking a vehicle and fleeing to the north. A high-speed chase ensued and the suspect eventually crashed in a residential neighborhood in Bossier City. At this location the suspect was shot by police, ending the incident.North Carolina: This morning a shooting was reported in Leinbach Park, near Jefferson Middle School in Winston-Salem. Multiple individuals were wounded during the engagement, which resulted from a planned fight which devolved into a small arms skirmish. 2x fatalities have been reported, along with several others wounded.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Statements made by President Trump over the weekend indicate that the Gulf War will probably resume once the ceasefire concludes on Wednesday evening. Major American military logistical flights have continued to intensify into the Middle East over the past few days, and as it stands the United States has not exactly been amenable to another extension of the ceasefire.. Due to the recent developments in the Strait, merchant traffic is not going to resume normalcy anytime soon, with not one, but two navies now targeting merchant shipping for running their respective blockades. The brief rhetoric a few days ago indicating the Strait opening up was only a fleeting moment, and now that peace is looking less likely, the long-term effects are going to start stack

President Donald Trump says U.S. representatives will arrive in Pakistan on Monday for negotiations with Iran. The U.S. delegation is set to include Vice President JD Vance, Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner. Those efforts may face challenges, though, with Iran saying it will not participate unless the U.S. ends its blockade of Iranian ports. This follows the U.S. seizure of an Iranian-flagged vessel over the weekend.A community in Louisiana is reeling after a shooting leaves eight children dead in Shreveport, Louisiana. Police say the suspected gunman, 31-year-old Shamar Elkins, targeted his own family in what investigators are calling a domestic incident. Authorities say the victims ranged in age from 18 months to 12 years old and were killed inside a residence on West 79th Street. Investigators say Elkins fled the scene, carjacked a vehicle, and was eventually shot and killed by police after a chase.Federal officials and lawmakers are investigating cases of 11 scientists who were either killed, died, or went missing. They all worked for the government and had access to nuclear or aerospace material. The majority of the cases took place between 2025 and 2026. One of the highest profile cases involves a retired U.S. Air Force General, William McCasland, who went missing from his Albuquerque home in February. President Trump described the disappearances as "pretty serious" involving very important people. He added that we'll know whether the cases were random or coordinated in the coming week.

Eight children were killed and two other people were gravely wounded in a shooting spree that spanned at least three locations in Shreveport, La., and ended with the gunman shot dead after a police chase on Sunday morning, the authorities said.The gunman, Shamar Elkins, 31, had mental health problems and had recently expressed suicidal thoughts, family members said in interviews.The children ranged in age from 3 to 11, officials said, and seven of the eight were Mr. Elkins's. He shot them execution style, according to a spokesman for the Shreveport Police Department.

Daniel Harris is entering his second season as the head men's basketball coach at Davis & Elkins College and his fourth overall with the program in 2025–26. He guided the program to its fourth consecutive Mountain East Conference Tournament appearance, where D&E earned a 63-61 first-round victory over ninth-seeded Wheeling. Prior to Davis & Elkins, Harris served as director of basketball operations under Head Coach Lennie Acuff at Lipscomb University for two seasons. He also served as a graduate assistant at Jacksonville University. Harris gained additional experience as a recruiting coordinator with Hoop Group in Reading, Pennsylvania.As a player, Harris began his collegiate career at Hillsborough Community College, where he was team captain, team MVP, and recipient of the Coach's Award. He then transferred to Division I Quinnipiac University, where he started 50 games, shot over 40 percent from three-point range, and earned team MVP honors as a junior. He was a team captain as a senior and a nominee for the NABC Allstate Good Works Team.
