“You can't put love into a house you don't own.” That one quote encapsulates the spirit of Ken Elkins' journey, vision, and mission as founder of Renewed. In this powerful Detroit is Different interview, Ken speaks truth to the generational impact of housing instability, sharing how growing up in a series of rentals shaped his understanding of pride, permanence, and purpose. From his early days in Saginaw, working at Chuck E. Cheese and joining the Navy Reserves just to find a path to college, to co-founding Ferris State's “Black Leaders Aspiring for Critical Knowledge,” Ken's life is a testament to how community can turn potential into power. “When I owned my first home, I felt value for the first time,” he reflects. Now, he's pouring that lesson back into Detroit, offering affordable homes where the mortgage is never more than 25% of your income. It's not just about equity—it's about emotional stability, dignity, and the ripple effects of ownership for families who have long been priced out of their own neighborhoods. As Ken puts it, “I can't stop the developers, but I can flip one house and keep that in the community.” Filled with laughter, real talk, and a deeply rooted love for the culture—yes, lamb chops, buffs, and all—this episode is a masterclass in what it means to build legacy through healing and homeownership. In this podcast Phil Elkins discusses respiratory diseases in cattle, essentially preventive versus reactive care, and ensuring farm vets and farmers engage on countering the threats. Phil Elkins qualified in 2005 from The University of Edinburgh and, following stints in Cheshire and New Zealand, spent the majority of his career in clinical practice in Cornwall, during which time he gained a certificate in advanced veterinary practice in cattle. Following 15 years in clinical practice and a stint working for an agri-tech company, Phil now works as an independent consultant to both farms and industry bodies. He is a former council member of the BVA. He wrote “Respiratory disease in cattle: preventive versus reactive care” for Vet Times Livestock (2025), Volume 11, Issue 1, Pages 9-10 (which went out with Vet Times Volume 55, Issue 12). We focus on early works by Elkins and Rueckert and try to place actual inspirations in their work against alleged conspiracies found in media. This is the continuation of the previous episode. Cindy chronicles her daughter, Chase's, journey with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in 2022. Chase was part of a clinical trial, which accelerated all TMS treatments into a few days, as opposed to the traditional model that spans multiple weeks. Cindy notes how quickly Chase improved and how she became herself again. Chase is now a pre-med junior in college and doing well. Dr. Koo explains the difference between TMS and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). She also notes that the accelerated protocol is now far beyond the clinical trial, and which path a patient takes is often dependent on insurance. The accelerated protocol is typically cash pay right now. Cindy and Martha conclude by discussing their quest as members of the Board of the Clinical Advancement of TMS (https://factms.org/) is to get TMS on equal footing and get it in the conversation of mental health treatments.

Don't miss the first in a two-part series featuring Cindy Elkins and Dr. Martha Koo. I met Cindy at the 2024 NAMICon (https://events.nami.org/namicon/). Cindy shared some of her daughter's story with me, which included being part of a clinical trial for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, and being featured on The Today Show (https://www.today.com/video/how-magnet-therapy-can-help-treat-depression-143573573760). In this episode, Cindy shares with us how her daughter, Chase's, battle with depression started in early 2020. Sermon Synopsis, December 23-24, 2024. When God spoke, breaking the silence at the first Christmas, He gave humanity the greatest gift in history: His Son. The Bible explains what happened in the past, how it affects the future, and how, at the first Christmas, after 400 years of silence, God breaks the silence and sends His Son to save a people from all peoples and give them purpose and peace. Three reasons why Jesus is the greatest gift ever given to humanity are that Jesus redeems and saves sinners from enslavement to sin and to the sinful world, Jesus reinstitutes humanity's primary purpose, and Jesus restores Shalom inwardly and promises to bring it eternally.

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Sunday, Dec. 15, 2024 West Virginia University's new folklife exhibit explores cultural connections past and present…discover that perfect Hallmark holiday town, right here in Almost Heaven…and WV School of Osteopathic Medicine awards its first two The Health Plan scholarships…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV PUBLIC – The term “folklife” can evoke the sounds of fiddles and banjoes, or black and white images of grandparents on the old family farm. And those can both be true. But an exhibit at West Virginia University invites the public to explore how the traditional still influences us today — and how new traditions might influence tomorrow. Catherine Rakowski is the research and exhibition specialist for the West Virginia and Regional History Center at WVU in Morgantown. The center is displaying a piece of folk art she wasn't sure she would ever get a chance to show off to the public -- a friendship quilt. Rakowski said it's one of her favorites, and with good reason: Some 20 hand-embroidered squares, each containing a floral design, and more importantly the name of its maker, are bordered with pink and white fabric borders. But more important than the protagonists are their settings: the stunning small towns the characters get to call home. West Virginia is full of such places, small towns overflowing with charm and holiday spirit. From extravagant parades and light shows to beautifully decorated homes and festivals that allow you to step back in time, a walk through these picture-perfect places will warm the heart of the most stubborn scrooge. Check out holiday happenings in Harpers Ferry, Elkins, Bramwell and other small towns in Almost Heaven. Read more: https://wvliving.com/picture-perfect-holiday-towns/ #3 – From THE REAL WV – Two West Virginia natives are attending medical school at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine without the burden of tuition and fees, thanks to a medical scholarship program offered by The Health Plan. WVSOM first-year students Sarah Lester of McDowell County, and Emma Beatty, a native of Clay County now living in Wetzel County, have been awarded The Health Plan Scholarship, which covers tuition and fees and is renewable for four years, allowing the students to graduate medical school without worrying about those costs. Since 2009, The Health Plan Scholarship program has provided more than $3 million in scholarships to more than 50 medical and nursing students who intend to stay and practice in the state of West Virginia. The need-based program is also available to medical and nursing students at West Virginia University and Marshall University. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024. Employers can find qualified talent through Generation WV's Career Connector program--and it's free!...West Virginians are invited to submit photos for holiday trees at the Capitol honoring members of the military and first responders…and Ascend WV remote workers sing praises of their new home in Elkins…on today's daily304. #1 – From GENERATION WV – The Generation West Virginia Career Connector program offers two ways for employers to connect with more qualified talent around the state: through its job board and Generational Talent Search recruitment services. The career connector job board is a free service for any West Virginia company looking to expand their team or fill open roles. The job board features jobs from all counties across the state and from any industry. The Generational Talent Search program is a talent recruitment service that helps West Virginia employers connect with top talent through a streamlined and efficient approach. Through GTS, you can expand your reach, get tailored quality candidates, reduce your recruiting costs and decrease time to hire. Learn more: https://www.jobcase.com/articles/wv-career-connector-hiring #2 – From THE REAL WV – Gov. Jim Justice and First Lady Cathy Justice invite all West Virginians to honor members of the United States military and first responders by submitting photos to be showcased on two recognition trees that will be displayed during this year's holiday season. This year's recognition trees will be located in the west rotunda of the main Capitol building, along with a third tree decorated by Gold Star mothers and families to honor their loved ones whose lives were sacrificed while serving our country. All photos, along with the submission form and tag, must be received no later than Monday, November 25, 2024. Read more: https://therealwv.com/2024/11/11/west-virginians-invited-to-submit-photos-for-2024-military-and-first-responder-recognition-trees/ #3 – From WV LIVING – Matt Condra, a software engineer from Louisville, Kentucky, moved to Elkins a year ago this past August. He and his wife, Allyson, were tired of the stresses of urban life, so they researched incentives for remote workers. The Ascend West Virginia program—and the city of Elkins—checked all the boxes for the Condras and their three young children. They love the outdoor activities, the conveniences of city life, and a welcoming and supportive community. Remote workers also have access to a Common Door right downtown—a “shared workspace community” that combines the productivity that an office allows with the flexibility and collaboration remote jobs require. Lisa Wood, executive director of the Elkins/Randolph Chamber of Commerce, says Elkins has the “trifecta” for vibrant, growing small cities—a hospital, a college, and a riverfront. The city also boasts a lively and eclectic food scene, plenty of arts and culture, and it's the gateway to the Monongahela National Forest and all its recreational opportunities. Gerald Milnes is a folklorist, fiddler, author, documentary filmmaker, ethnomusicologist, amateur anthropologist and the former Folk Arts Coordinator at the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, WV. He is the book author & documentary filmmaker of Signs, Cures & Witchery: German Appalachian Folklore. After an intro about milk witchery, Gerald talks about his passion-driven life as a self-taught folklorist. From there he lays out the history of the 18th-century migration of German settlers from the Old World to Pennsylvania and finally into the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia. Living in the region, Gerald befriended & interviewed many of the old timers who revealed to him a mysterious world of folk magic, superstition & occultism still alive on the mountain farmsteads. We hear of witch wars, witch doctoring, hunting magic, animal sacrifice, planting by the signs, selling one's soul to the devil, and the interplay between Christianity & the occult. For the last section, Gerald plays regional songs on his fiddle while telling a story about music's effect on the soul. In closing, he shares some music-lore about rattlesnake tails & a bewitched fiddle. Readings from Signs, Cures & Witchery: German Appalachian Folklore by Gerald Milnes.
