For this installment of Guilty Pleasure/Dumpster Fire, we crash into 2011's "Drive Angry," starring Nicolas Cage and Amber Heard. The Pull List "The Other Jay and Eve" (Silver Sprocket) by Emma Jayne and Ashanti Fortson Follow us!
It's that time of year, Spookies! Sydney's back in town, and that means we get to record another very special in-person episode, and this one's all about Drive Angry (2011). For our third installment of NIC MAY-GE, we're focusing on a grindhouse-inspired thriller where the man of the month teams up with Amber Heard. An adrenaline-fueled adventure that sees this duo facing off against Billy Burke, this flick dials up the sex, style, and violence, and it's one you definitely don't want to watch with your dad — despite the father-daughter themes. Join us (and Nicolas Cage) as we hit the road at high speeds like we're escaping from hell itself. References:
THIS WEEK: Dracula 2000 (2000), Dracula II: Ascension (2003) and Dracula III: Legacy (2005)Our run of episodes on the stunted hopes of aughts horror gradually morphs into a look at secret franchises as we look at the undisputed king of the 3D horror revival, Patrick Lussier. Before there was Drive Angry, there was Dracula 2000. And two DTV sequels that apparently exist.Donate to Palestinian Medical Aid Support Optimism Vaccine on Patreon

The next sequel we will discuss is "Messengers 2: The Scarecrow". For it, I chatted with the writer of the sequel, Todd Farmer, who also wrote the original. Todd talked about his journey from Kentucky to Hollywood to now living in a castle in Portugal. We talked about how having a buddy in college who was friend's with a writer was a big turning point. We talked about coming up the idea for Jason X, acting in some of his films, the difficulty of writing a remake, a writer's day to day on set, owning a castle, and more.Watch the unedited video interview at sequelsonly.com/ToddFarmerTodd's IMDb https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0267805/Your homework is to watch "Messengers 2: The Scarecrow" for free on Tubi... Send us a textOn the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are wishing we were Nicolas Cage and best friends with Pedro Pascal. We watched the 2022 film from Tom Gormican, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.I'm putting it out there right now: Nic Cage is one of our finest actors. Not only is he a freaking Oscar winner, but he also does weird meta movies like this one. Doesn't he seem like the craziest hang imaginable? There may have been some tough years in his past. Who among us doesn't occasionally have some money troubles and have to accept work we'd rather not do? But should we get on his case for stuff like Bangkok Dangerous and Drive Angry? For every one of those films, there's a Moonstruck, a Leaving Las Vegas, a The Rock. He's the best, and he shows us why in this delightful film.(Recorded on September 18, 2024)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent - The Movie Database (TMDB)The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent trailer - YouTubeTom Gormican — The Movie Database (TMDB)Nicolas Cage — The Movie Database (TMDB)Pedro Pascal — The Movie Database (TMDB)Nicolas Cage: Real estate and tax problems - WikipediaThe Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Paddington (2014) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Paddington 2 (2017) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Guarding Tess (1994) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Vampire's Kiss (1988) — The Movie Database (TMDB)American Psycho (2000) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Batmobiles down the ages - Pocket-lintFollow Us:Give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts!Sean's Letterboxd profile!Steven's Letterboxd profile! Our Buzzsprout site! Our Instagram profile!Support the show

Drive Angry comes to use from a movie boom we all have forgotten. The 3D movie era inspired by James Cameron's Avatar produced an insanely fun, violent, sexual, and flat-out poignant. Drive Angry's intent is rich and meaningful, the point of this movie is something to be studied.

It's been 50 episodes since we last stepped into the "cage," so we find ourselves there again with a selection of three films with Nicolas Cage in lead performances. Joe's pick is Drive Angry, a 2011 supernatural actioner riding the wave of 3D excitement in the post-Avatar moment in which it arrived. Dave selects Bringing Out the Dead, a relatively underperforming Scorsese vehicle that had more critical love than it did financial returns. And, of course, Carlos is back for the fun with his selection of Cage's Oscar-winning turn as a hopelessly alcoholic writer in Leaving Las Vegas. There are dark themes to explore but still a lot of fun to be had and beer to be drank on this 2023 Cage Match episode!

Having appeared in a wide range of films along with television and theater roles over the course of his career, William Fichtner continues to carve out a distinctive reputation as one of our most versatile and talented actors, whether in comedy or drama, action or character study. He is one of Hollywood's most distinct and familiar faces. Fichtner can next be seen in the Robert Rodriguez feature film Hypnotic alongside Ben Affleck and Alice Braga, and in 88 directed by Thomas Ikimi. Other recent films include The Birthday Cake, co-starring Ewan McGregor and Val Kilmer; The Space Between, opposite Kelsey Grammer and directed by Rachel Winter; Jack & Josie directed by Sarah Lancaster; Armed, written and directed by Mario Van Peebles; Finding Steve McQueen with Forest Whitaker, and opposite Jeffery Wright in the indie feature O.G. directed by Madeleine Sackler that premiered on HBO. Fichtner also starred alongside Jon Voight in the indie feature American Wrestler: The Wizard; Krystal directed by William H. Macy, and produced and starred in the indie feature The Neighbor. Pivoting to the other side of the camera, Fichtner directed, produced, co-wrote, and starred in his feature film Cold Brook shot mostly in his hometown of Buffalo, New York. Segueing between television and feature films, Fichtner led an ensemble cast in the original first 2 seasons of the international crime series Crossing Lines. He recurred on HBO's Entourage from 2009-2011 and played ‘FBI Agent Alexander Mahone' for three seasons on Fox's hit drama series, Prison Break. William recently played Adam on CBS's hit show Mom opposite Allison Janney, from creator Chuck Lorre. William can now be seen in the Peacock limited series Joe vs Carol where he stars alongside Kate McKinnon and John Cameron Mitchell. Other feature films include 12 Strong for producer Jerry Bruckheimer; Independence Day:Resurgence directed by Roland Emmerich; Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; director Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger and Neil Blomkamp's Elysium. He also co-starred in writer-director Paul Haggis' Academy Award-winning Crash. For his performance in that film, he shared a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Ensemble Cast in a Feature Film. Other film credits include Drive Angry for director Patrick Lussier; Shawn Levy's Date Night; Blades of Glory with Will Ferrell; Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight; the remake of The Longest Yard; the comedy The Amateurs with Jeff Bridges; Rodrigo Garcia's Nine Lives; Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down; What's The Worst That Could Happen; Wolfgang Peterson's The Perfect Storm; Drowning Mona; Ultraviolet and Equilibrium, both for writer-director Kurt Wimmer; Armageddon directed by Michael Bay; Michael Mann's Heat; Robert Zemeckis' Contact; Doug Liman's Go; Strange Days directed by Katherine Bigelow; Passion of Mind; Steven Soderbergh's The Underneath; Agnieszka Holland's Julie Walking Home and The Settlement with John C. 2011 was a great year for Nic Cage—he starred in Season of the Witch, Drive Angry, and this episode's widely despised Joel Schumacher thriller Trespass, co-starring Nicole Kidman. Featuring Abbie Phelps (https://twitter.com/goodhunterabbie)! Steven Spielberg's update of H.G. Wells's genre classic crumbles Tom Cruise, America's perfect leading man, into a pool of tears and paranoia. It's a choice consistent with the narrative of the overall movie, a metaphor for the naked, scared soul of imperialism – an unmasking of the patriotism-cum-xenophobia that shepherded thousands of young Americans to die for national wealth in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Space Jason Drive AngryGet M A D with Chris Graves 12-12-2022 Todd FarmerOn this very special episode of "Get M.A.D." I chat with veteran screenwriter Todd Farmer! Todd has written such horror films as "Jason X", "My Bloody Valentine 3D", "Drive Angry", screenplays for a "Halloween 3D" & "Hellraiser" reboot for Miramax / Dimension Films, the comic book "Alien Pig Farm 3000" with "Punisher" star Thomas Jane, and much, much more! He also goes into a very difficult time in his life and career where after years of being a paid working screenwriter in Hollywood, he found himself living in his car and having to shower at his local gym. After a few years of having to put his first love aside to work at Fed Ex & a car dealership, Todd was able to fight his way back to screenwriting! Very inspiring, so much so that he decided to write an article about the whole situation, warts & all, and was met with quite a bit of feedback! I was honored that he would take the time to chat with me. Enjoy! Merrill Nisker (born 11 November 1966), better known by her stage name Peaches, is a Canadian electroclash musician and producer. Born in Ontario, Peaches began her musical career in the 1990s as part of a folk trio, Mermaid Cafe. In 1995, she established a rock band, the Shit. That year she also released her first solo album, Fancypants Hoodlum. After moving to Berlin, Germany, she was signed to the Kitty-Yo label and released her second album, The Teaches of Peaches (2000). Touring as the opening act for bands like Marilyn Manson and Queens of the Stone Age, she subsequently released her third album, Fatherfucker (2003). Peaches' songs have been featured in movies such as Mean Girls, Waiting..., Jackass Number Two, My Little Eye, Drive Angry, and Lost in Translation. Her music has also been featured on television shows such as Orphan Black, Lost Girl, The L Word, South Park, Skam, The Handmaid's Tale, 30 Rock, True Blood, Fresh Meat, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, The Boys, Sex Education, and Letterkenny, and has been used for the promotion of Dirt. Peaches has performed guest vocals on several songs, including "Oh My God" from Pink's album Try This, "We Don't Play Guitars" from Chicks on Speed's album 99 Cents, "My Girls" from Christina Aguilera's 2010 album Bionic (produced by — and co-written with — Le Tigre), and "Scare Me" from Major Lazer's 2013 album Free the Universe (also featuring Timberlee).
Don't forget your furniture dolly because here comes a truly Fergalicious episode. 2011 3D flick, Drive Angry takes on 2012 heist romp, Stolen. Get the answers you crave to such questions as: how big are the Devil's hands? Can a plasma cutter melt gold? Is there sugar in hell? What is Nick's favorite Cage line this week!? This is Cage Match
Third time's the charm for returning guest (and video essayist extraordinaire) Patrick H. Willems, as we strap ourselves into the driver's seat for a pair of gonzo Cage-rage drivin' devil movies! First up is Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, the Neveldine/Taylor-directed sequel to the 2000s adaptation of the Marvel comic character, with Cage reprising his role as cursed cyclist Johnny Blaze. This time, he's scraping at the door in Romania, going full Terminator 2 as he keeps the Devil (a scowling Ciaran Hinds) away from his kid. Meanwhile, Neveldine and Taylor do their Crank thing to mixed results, and Idris Elba is completely wasted as a French motorcycle priest(?) obsessed with helping the good guys. Then, we shift gears to Patrick Lussier's Drive Angry 3-D, a faux-grindhouse pastiche filled with more lolrandom epic bacon humor and random CG objects popping out at the screen than you could imagine. Still, it's got a lowbrow charm to it, and William Fichtner somehow out-acts Cage as a smarmy Accountant from the underworld who's chasing Cage's hell-escapee grandpa and his sexy waitress sidekick (Amber Heard). The Film School Janitors are back in school, and they're going to Nic Cage University! Their goal is to watch and review every film Nicolas Cage has ever made... and will ever make! This week's assignment: DRIVE ANGRY This one is about a father/grandfather breaking out of hell to get revenge, and it ain't all that different from most of Mr. Cage's offerings except for the fact that this one used to be in 3D! It ain't anymore, unless you get the 3D Blu-ray, have a 3D Blu-ray player (or PS4), and an old 3D TV! NOTE: One of the Janitors have all the above.
Featuring guest Dan Nagan of Everything We Learned (https://twitter.com/adapperdanman)! Red and Mandy live in remote, mountainous California. Jeremiah Sand wants Mandy for his own. When he finally gets her and finds out he can't earn her love, fealty, or fear, he burns her alive in front of her beloved. Red, newly given to the righteous, hellacious power of grief, embarks on a bloodbath rampage to exact vengeance on Sand, his followers, and the tripping, genetically modified sadomasochist biker gang that made Red's pain possible. For being a relatively new film, MANDY has already left its mark on the action/horror space. Thematically evocative of a prog rock paean, visually visceral like a death metal album cover, and dripping with psychedelic horror vibes, its vision never outstrips its execution. It can be slow, strange, off-putting, and unconvincing, but it's not forgettable. It rocks. It's also, sometimes, very good.
