The first film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU), it was directed by Ruben Fleischer from a screenplay by the writing team of Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, along with Kelly Marcel. Tom Hardy stars as Eddie Brock and Venom alongside Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, and Reid Scott. In the film, struggling journalist Eddie gains superpowers after becoming the host of an alien symbiote, Venom, whose species plans to invade Earth. Following Venom's appearance in Spider-Man 3 (2007), Sony Pictures attempted to develop a spin-off film based on the Venom character, which was stalled due to issues with the company's ongoing Spider-Man franchise. In March 2016, work began on a new version that would start a new shared universe featuring the non-Spider-Man Marvel characters that the studio possessed film rights to. Sony also originally intended for the Venom film to share the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), but ultimately distanced the film from Spider-Man. Sony's Columbia Pictures produced the film in association with Marvel Entertainment.[5] In March 2017, Rosenberg and Pinkner were set to write, with Fleischer and Hardy added in May; Marcel subsequently joined to rewrite the script. Filming took place from October 2017 to January 2018 in Atlanta, New York City, and San Francisco. The film was primarily inspired by the comic book miniseries Venom: Lethal Protector (1993) and the story arc "Planet of the Symbiotes" (1995). Ludwig Göransson was hired to compose the film's score, marking his second Marvel film after Black Panther (2018). Venom premiered at the Regency Village Theater on October 1, 2018, and was theatrically released in the United States on October 5. Despite receiving generally negative reviews from critics, Hardy's performance and the character's relationship with Venom were praised, and the film became the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2018, earning over $856 million worldwide and setting several box office records for an October release. It is followed by two sequels: Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which was released on October 1, 2021, and Venom: The Last Dance, which is scheduled for release on October 25, 2024. Venom: Let There Be Carnage is a 2021 American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Venom. The sequel to Venom (2018) and the second film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU), it was directed by Andy Serkis from a screenplay by Kelly Marcel. Tom Hardy stars as Eddie Brock and Venom alongside Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris, Reid Scott, Stephen Graham, and Woody Harrelson. In the film, Eddie and the alien symbiote Venom must face serial killer Cletus Kasady (Harrelson) after he becomes the host of an offshoot of Venom named Carnage. Venom was intended by Sony Pictures to be the start of a new shared universe, and plans for a sequel began during production on the first film. Harrelson was cast to make a brief appearance as Cletus at the end of Venom, with the intention of him becoming the villain Carnage in the sequel. Official work on the sequel began in January 2019, with Hardy and Harrelson confirmed to return along with Marcel as writer. Serkis was hired as director that August, partly due to his experience working with computer-generated imagery (CGI) and motion capture technology, which was an important part of portraying Venom and Carnage in the film. Filming took place at Leavesden Studios in England from November 2019 to February 2020, with additional filming in San Francisco in February. The title was announced in April 2020. Marco Beltrami was hired to compose the film's score, replacing Ludwig Göransson from the previous film.

Welcome to Act 3! In this special Patreon-exclusive bonus episode, we're talking about the amazing “requel,” Scream (2022) from Paramount Pictures, which was shot in Wilmington, NC and yes that is why these One Tree Hill podcasters are covering it and celebrating 25 years of the Scream franchise! Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), and Dewey Riley (David Arquette) ended Billy Loomis' (Skeet Ulrich, who returned in this movie! Ahhh!) and Stu Macher's reign as Ghostface. But now a new killer dons the Ghostface mask and stalks both the legacy characters and a new young cast, featuring the talents of Sonia Ammar, Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, and Jack Quaid. During our discussion, we go over requel rules (Why not just call it Scream 5? Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are not fooling anyone.), Gale's subtle and nuanced character development, Dewey's death (and why we're both mad about it for different reasons), the unfortunate plot holes (we all know time has no meaning in Tree Hill and it has no meaning in Woodsboro either), why Kyle Gallner deserves more work, our crush on Jack Quaid, the triumphant returns of lesser-known legacy characters Judy Hicks (Marley Shelton) and Martha Meeks (Heather Matarazzo), the tribute to Wes Craven (“For Wes”), the welcome return of “Red Right Hand” by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and all of the Scream Easter eggs littered throughout. Also, who has a cameo in Scream (2022)? We point out the secret cameos from old friends Drew Barrymore, Jamie Kennedy, Matthew Lillard, Adam Brody, Kevin Williamson, Marco Beltrami, Patrick Lussier, Julie Plec and Wes Craven's widow, Iya. Plus, are Tara and Amber together? The original casting call made it seem that way and we dive into what could have been. And in lieu of a favorite musical moment, you will hear us talk about our favorite death scenes. Plus, we talk about our relationships to horror movies (surprise! We both love horror!) and give shoutouts to The Ring, The Blair Witch Project, Hereditary, Midsommar, The Babadook, It Follows, Jordan Peele films, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Valentine, and Scream 4 (and its need for justice!). linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This week, Kyle and his brother Nik review Guillermo Del Toro's, Blade II (2002)! Trevor was unable to attend this week's recording, as he was unfortunately trapped in a Florida avalanche. A sequel to the Wesley Snipes headlined Marvel comic adaptation, Blade (1998), Del Toro's chapter of the franchise sees the mythology expanded, and the action and production design greatly refined. Written by frequent comic book adapter, David S. Goyer, the film continues the series' penchant for exploring the concept of vampirism through a more scientific lens, while at once providing ample opportunity for fight coordinator Donnie Yen to wow audiences with his flashy and innovative stylings. Despite being a sequel, to a Marvel property no less, Blade II bears many of the hallmarks of a Del Toro film, not just in terms of thematic content, but also in the the presence of frequent collaborators, Ron Perlman and composer Marco Beltrami. In spite of a false start in the form of Mimic (1997), Blade II would serve as the breakthrough film for Guillermo Del Toro's career in mainstream international cinema, resulting in a beautiful and varied body of work that has yielded both Oscar gold and boffo box office returns. Easily an equal to, if not the better of the original, Blade II is a fantastic sequel that ups the emotionality, juices up the gore, and continues to make Wesley Snipes out to be the coolest damn hero in all of comic book cinema. More Pacific Rim (2013) than The Devil's Backbone (2001), Blade II may not be highbrow Del Toro, but it's a Del Toro film through and through, and a damn fun one at that. Highly recommended to action-horror fans, or anyone with a pulse. Does Sid survive? As usual, we warn listeners before give away any spoilers.NOTE: We talk about the music that plays when Dewey is on screen and jokingly call it Dewey's Tune, but actually we were close. It's called Dewey's Theme by Marco Beltrami and was originally used in the film Broken Arrow. The music was then used as temp music for Scream 2, but eventually it stayed in the film.
