They discover the wild backstories behind Donna's legendary hits, from "Love To Love You Baby" to "She Works Hard for the Money," and her infamous recording session with Barbra Streisand for “No More Tears (Enough is Enough).” Chelsea and Holly discuss Donna's religious turn and reflect on their own intense relationships with religion and mysticism.
Continuing our focus on the “Almost Famous” members of the X-Men, we wrap up the members who joined in the 80s with the Disco Queen known as Dazzler, and the Indigenous American inventor who goes by Forge. But, before that, an important announcement about the future of the show.

What is it like to be a famous musical duo, on the road all the time, and married with kids? That's the life of Amanda Sudano and Abner Ramirez, more widely known as folk-pop band Johnnyswim, whose eclectic life is put on full display in their two reality television shows, “The Johnnyswim Show” and “In the Kitchen with Abner + Amanda.” Amanda's mother was the legendary Disco Queen Donna Summer; meanwhile, Abner's family experienced the intense political turmoil of 20th century Cuba, emigrating to the United States in the Mariel Boatlift in 1980. In this exclusive interview, they discuss everything from family history, to touring life, to activism and faith. Plus, we include their musical performance from a No Small Endeavor show at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. This week we delve into the life and experiences of singer CANDI STATON, as she discusses her tumultous journey in the music industry, her battles with breast cancer, and the impact of her hit songs. From overcoming addiction and abusive relationships to finding success in the disco era, Candi Staton's story is one of resilience, determination, and the power of music. The 83-year-old exemplifies versatility and resilience. She has managed to cross multiple genres and adapt to changing times, all while staying true to herself and staunchly refusing to imitate others. She's faced many challenges but has always managed to come out stronger. Candi is not only a talented artist but also an inspiring figure who has managed to rise above several abusive marriages and dodgy managers. Her rise to success is a story of talent, perseverance, and adaptability. From her humble beginnings in Alabama to becoming a disco princess, Candi has shown that she is a force to be reckoned with. We hear how her journey began when she caught the attention of producer Rick Hall and married singer, Clarence Carter. Crowned 'The First Lady of Southern Soul', she didn't stop there. In a bold move, she transitioned from soul music to disco, joining the disco craze that was taking over the music scene at the time. This decision proved to be a wise one, as her hit song "Young Hearts Run Free" became a massive success and solidified her legend status. Despite achieving success and fame, Candi reveals that there was always something missing in her life, leading to feelings of loneliness and emptiness. Candi acknowledges that she never fully resolved her loneliness despite being married six times. She regales us with the long winded back story behind her other huge hit ‘You've Got the Love' and says she's flattered by the fact that many younger artists now cover her songs. She also tells us about her journey with breast cancer and how she has used this as an opportunity for growth and self-improvement. As you'll hear, Candi Staton is one helluva positive lady who's never been happier than she is today. With new music out now and a series of gigs still to come, her story since she began singing in church as a child until today, is quite remarkable. To quote the title of one of her most recent albums, Candi Staton is 'Unstoppable' I hope you enjoy our conversation. For more information about Candi Staton head for her website https://www.candi-staton.com/ If you'd like to get in touch with me with feedback, comments or suggestions for future guests, please feel free to reach out via my website https://www.abreathoffreshair.com.au
This episode is dedicated to the impact of Donna Summer, the woman known as the queen of disco who inspired millions around the world to dance, really dance, and forget their troubles. But it wasn't just about the sounds – it was about her hair, her features, her makeup, the glitter and the sequins. The reason I've decided now is the time to focus on the wonders of Donna Summer is because HBO is releasing a documentary today, called Love to Love You, Donna Summer and it promises to share Donna's struggles with fame, how she navigated being a mother and also endeavoured to keep her private life private, all while experiencing such career highs as being the first black woman to have a music video play on MTV. I'm dying to watch the documentary so I thought I'd try and take us back a little bit to break down just how Donna inspired the world. Let me know if you enjoyed this episode and if you're listening on Spotify and you're a Donna Summer fan, be sure to take part in my poll and let me know your favourite Donna song. Follow us (and like us!) at Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts, and follow us on Twitter. Also please subscribe to The Ankler at TheAnkler.com for more podcasts and stories like these about the entertainment industry.Today's Ankler Hot Seat podcast welcomes guest Kevin Goetz, a man who has been at the center of Hollywood's so-called “movie research industry” for more than three decades via his firm, Screen Engine/ASI. On today's episode, Goetz, who is also the author of the bestseller Audience-Ology: How Moviegoers Shape the Movies We Love (Simon & Schuster), joins hosts Janice Min, Richard Rushfield and Tatiana Siegel as cautious optimism reigns over this summer's coming blockbuster season. Goetz discusses a looming theatrical reckoning as the most rabid moviegoing demographic is replaced by an apathetic new generation.“Let me give you the sobering truth of what's happening with Gen Zs and millennials,” he says. “Ten years ago, 2 to 11-year-olds saw 4.1 movies [per year in theaters]. Now they're seeing about three movies, and our prediction in 10 years is 2.2 movies.” “12 to 17-year-olds 10 years ago saw 7.9 movies. Now: 5.1. In 10 years, 3.3.” “18 to 24-year-olds were at 8.4 movies. Now: 5.1. In 10 years, 3.3.” And so on… “So [with] the declines of Z and millennials… as the older folks die off, sorry to say, every 10 years, you're going to see a decline in moviegoing,” he says, while adding the slightly bright note that the populations of the younger audiences are far larger than they used to be, which make up for some of the change in habit.Still, it's not all doom and gloom. Goetz notes that studios will succeed if they can better curate their theatrical offerings and push the less-necessary fare to streaming services, like Sony has done during the pandemic. He also gave high marks to Netflix for being “the first to recognize and listen to the consumer” and making decisions based on that input. Adds Goetz. “My whole career has been [about being] the advocate of the moviegoer, the TV viewer, the entertainment consumer. And I have to say that, [Hollywood has often] avoided them. Many people have avoided them too long at their own peril.”Goetz predicts that by Labor Day, Disney and Universal will be most pleased with their summer slates, and several films will help erase the two-year Covid nightmare, namely Tom Cruise's Tom Gun: Maverick, Chris Pratt's Jurassic World Dominion and the Marvel tentpoles Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder. And despite Warner Bros. and Disney's much-maligned stab at day-and-date releases during the pandemic, Goetz says the strategy is likely here to stay.“I don't think we've done enough in the space to rule it dead,” he says. “I think that what you're going to see is custom patterns now. Every movie will be not from a cookie-cutter mold but will have its own criteria. So, some movies will stay in the theaters for 31 days. Some will stay in for 10 days. Some will stay in for two months. Because that's the reality of what has to happen.”Listen and subscribe to this podcast on Apple, Spotify or your favorite podcasting app, and remember to subscribe to The Ankler.New on The AnklerGreat reads:Worst-Case Scenario: Amazon. In 2008 I started a series of radio shows with fellow Freak and host, Jonny Rock. The original format was based around vinyl. Digital started to creep in, then CD's, then YouTube rips, and so on. But the idea remained the same, that we were sharing our discoveries with an audience.Fast forwarding a couple of years and expanding on the original concept, I will once again be playing dance music that you may or may not have heard, but this time said music will be readily available, if pointed in the right direction of course. The idea is for you to use me as your selector slash shop assistant in a virtual record store. Not only will I be shouting about both old and new music, but I will also be following it up with a series of compilations to be released on my label, Classic throughout the year. I will be your slightly odd, slightly off-centre, guide. But ultimately and most importantly, your friendly on-line record shop assistant. 1. MR FLIP - Hit Different [Yoruba] 00:582. You'd think we'd have extended trailers by now (we don't), or perhaps some grand marketing campaign providing insight into what might be in store (WE DON'T), but what we do have are articles. Articles and our delirious enthusiasm for Villaneve. In this first part of three, we start by channeling our inner Disco Queen to get the vibes going. What does Laura have in store for us? Shall Dark!Eve continue to rise? Will our ladies finally #ManifestTheSmash??? Are you ready for the TEA??? The Heibels have the tea, Corgis and Queens on roller skates, the Sway-zon creamed corn, AND quite possibly the only beer that accidentally tastes like pickle juice! There also might be some Jurassic Park quotes, talks about the Power Puff Girls, the names of the Red Lesbians, and ghost cats. And in the spirit of Pride month coming up just around the corner (like literally the next day), we would LOVE to try a beer and CBD cocktails inspired by some of Jon's favorite drag queens, but that is not what they try this episode…unfortunately…but there IS talk. Find out what tastes like creamed corn, biscuity crackers bop bop bop, pickle Rick! And once again, the Heibels apologize profusely about the dreadful hard seltzers from last week's episode. Finale di stagione all'insegna della grande musica.... semi coverizzata :)
The legendary Irish singer, songwriter and powerful performer ROÍSÍN MURPHY emphasizes the importance of revisiting the past to inform the future. In this episode, we catch the wonderful and delightful Disco Queen and talked about our shared passion for Italian Cinéma and music from Lucio Battisti and Mina to her latest record Roísín Machine and of course, Moloko.
It's true. I got to talk to the incomparable Gavin Turek! Speaking to a singer of Gavin's caliber about the vocalists who have influenced her is already exciting, but that's before you know that her influences are Tame Impala, Brittany Howard and Raphael Saadiq! Gavin and I had a great chat about those legendary singers, her penchant for winning concert tickets from radio stations and so much more!!Gavin TurekTame ImpalaBrittany HowardRaphael SaadiqLucy Pearl
In today's episode of Half-fry and Toast I speak with a Disco Queen from the '80s - Rupa Biswas. She recorded an album back in the 1980 with Indian Classical legend Aashish Khan. Recorded in a studio in Calgary, Canada her album was a perfect blend of classical music with balearic disco beats that get you right in the groove anytime, anywhere. I was so excited to connect with her and hear about her story of how her album got accidentally famous with her song hitting global charts across France, Spain and other European cities and the leading DJ Caribou, also known as Daphni playing it in his global sets. This interview was a total joyride for me, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Hear till the end to get a taste of her amazing, whimsical, disco music. Heaven or Hell? Remember when you stumbled out and it was already well past dawn? Looking for the sunglasses and feeling like a Zombie in the Land of the Living.. Well.. this is the soundtrack to such a night.. Quick & fun set I whipped up for my birthday. This is the original cut to which I added a Xtian Edit of Donna Summer’s “Bad Girls” (showing my venerable age right here..).R.I.P Donna the Disco Queen.. I received a request a few weeks ago for the stems of a mash-up I posted 3 years ago of “I Kissed a Girl vs. Angel on my Shoulder”. A strike of pure genius from C&M! I could not find the original edit on my HD, hence I re-worked it live and included the result in the set. Scroll to around 36min 24s if you have no time for anything else.. Blurb reduced to minimum required as I am leaving O/S and have little time to pontificate ;). Playlist Intro 2009 Do Yo House Dance?. Ania Garvey is a Singer, Songwriter, Recording Artist, and Actress. Her musical journey was born out of a conversation with The Disco Queen herself, Donna Summer while working in Florida, who encouraged her to pursue singing further. Her first break came when she was asked to perform for a Winery in Sarasota, when asked by Tribute Singer for 60's icons "The Marvelettes" Brenda Watty, to sing. The song chosen, is "Last Dance" by Donna Summer. The audience's responses were so favorable, that they assumed that she had her own show and wanted to know where they could come to see her perform. Since then, Ania has relocated to the UK, had had several international Soul music and Independent Artists chart-topping songs including, "Let's Feel Good", "I Tried To Tell You", "Take Your Time", "Tell Me What You Want", "He Asked Me", "Tears" and a cover for the late great Marvin Gaye's, "I Want You". She has had several live performances including one on the same stage Luther Vandross and other greats performed at Caister Soul Weekender, which was the UK's oldest and largest soul event covering 40 plus years. Momentum is really building for Ania, as she has appeared numerous times in 2020 & 2021 throughout the UK even with 'Sold Out events. Now for 2022 as she already starts this year out with a banging tune, "Anywhere With You", performed with Binky Womack, nephew of Bobby Womack. The song was launched by Soul Tracks Magazine and featured in Radio Indie International Network's top 10 requested songs within its first week. Ania's star shines brightly with WHTL the Land's 'Top-Requested Songs' and 'Most Popular Artists'. She is also a Radio Personality and Co-hosts with her husband Lee Wells on Cheeky Radio. Look out for word on her next appearance and tour with other great Artists later in 2022.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/ladydiva-live-radio/exclusive-content
