Mike Stephen learns about expanding access to cultural spaces for those with disabilities with Christena Gunther, president and founder of Cultural Access Collaborative, discusses a new funding opportunity for local cultural spaces with Illinois Humanities executive director Gabrielle Lyon, and gets the lowdown on Local Motive's new music with band frontman Mike Vinopal.
First off, I swear it wasn't my idea to put the dudes in the front seats and the women in the backseats. I knew it was going to be terrible optics. Dammit. This episode was a blast. I was joined by Mike Vinopal and Alex Subak of the bands Local Motive and Badcandy and Michelle Foik, founder of Eris Brewery and Cider House in Old Irving Park. As we ate delicious food from the Eris menu (and thought longingly about being able to enjoy Eris cider once we were out of the car), we talked about both bands (new albums on the way from both!) and Eris history (first female-owned brewery in Illinois and Chicago!). There was instant chemistry on this one. Hope you enjoy listening/watching! Now is the time to go solar! Introducing Transparent Solar. Mike Vinopal, Director of Education, and Joel Frieders, Director of public policy, for Hope for the Day return to Car Con Carne. They've been regular guests since the beginning of the pandemic for good reason. The need to talk about mental health and suicide is always vitally important, but certainly feels more so in 2020. What I like about Mike and Joel is they're not clinical or preachy when talking about mental health and suicide. They're honest and engaging communicators who listen, inform and speak on a welcome, personal level. Thanks to C&H Financial Services for sponsoring this episode. At long last, Mike Vinopal sits down with us for a long-form, deep-dive, one-on-one conversation covering his mental health journey. In his role as Hope for the Day Director of Education, you have heard him on Anthologies of Hope before leading the Sip of Hope one-year anniversary episode with me and recently hosting our Veterans Day Conversations Cafe episode as well. You will quickly hear the love he has for Hope for the Day, Sip of Hope, and everyone involved in breaking the stigmas associated with the mental health movement. We cover Mike’s childhood, growing up as a “different” kid in an otherwise white suburban upbringing, going off to college and discovering a whole new world of opportunities, working in the mental health field after discovering the desire to work in the act of service, as well as returning to Chicago to see where life led him full circle. We also dive deep into how and why Mike came face to face with his own mental health issues after returning to Chicago and the work he needed to do to come out on the other side of crisis, while growing and supporting his mental health both personally and professionally, including how he ended up manifesting his current role into existence!Throughout you will also hear Mike mention music again and again, so if you would like to see more of where you can find Mike’s musical talents, head on over to his Guest Page to find out all the bands and locations he is a part of. And if you’d like to meet Mike, learn from Mike, and spend a quality 4 hours with him, be sure to check out peervention.org, as Mike teaches the PEERvention workshops that HFTD hosts at the Logan Square Public Library each month.Anthologies / Rick Osowski / Hope for the Dayhttps://www.auxchicago.com/anthologies-of-hopehttps://www.anthologiesofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.facebook.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.instagram.com/rosowski/https://www.hftd.org/https://www.instagram.com/hopefortheday/https://www.facebook.com/hopefortheday/https://sipofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/sipofhope/https://www.facebook.com/sipofhope

Mike Vinopal from Local Motives talks to Alex about their new album, Grams on Radio One Chicago!
Local Motive is a new Chicago rock & roll band, true to the spirit of soul & funk, putting a modern twist on that classic feel. Formed at a casual jam one night in 2012, the ensemble went unnamed for a time. Through a mutual love of bands like Beck & Cake and playing live original music, guitarist/songwriter Mike Vinopal, bassist Brett Weides, vocalist Daniella Rojas, trumpeter Matthew Sypherd, & drummer Jeb Rendall were all brought together in the Chicago suburb of Bartlett.
