You might think creatine is a bodybuilder's steroid you have to cycle, load, and fear for your kidneys, but it's a compound your own body already makes from three amino acids, with one of the deepest safety records in all of nutrition science. The problem isn't the creatine; it's the noise around it.In this solo episode, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon discusses:Why the bump creatine causes in your creatinine lab value is a metabolic artifact, not a sign of kidney damage in healthy peopleWhere the hair-loss fear came from. A single unreplicated study in one rugby player showing a 56% DHT rise, and why no research has ever directly linked creatine to hair lossHow men and women respond differently (roughly 1.5 kg of lean mass in men vs. about a third of a kilogram in women), and why women still gain real strength, grip, cognition, and recoveryWhy you can't realistically eat your way to 5 grams a day: it would take 2.5 to 3 pounds of cooked meat and fish daily, so a single scoop closes the gapThe protocol: 3–5 grams of plain monohydrate every day, no loading phase, no cycling, timing barely mattersMuscle is your organ of longevity, the tissue that clears most of the glucose in your bloodstream and defends your metabolism as you age. Creatine won't build it for you, but it raises the ceiling on the work you can do, so the training that protects that muscle pays off more. Understanding what's real and what's fearmongering is the difference between avoiding a proven tool and using it well.Studies & ReferencesPubMed study: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1327657/Sports Nutrition Society: https://www.sportsnutritionsociety.org/Thank you to our sponsors:Egg life - CTA - Find egglife wraps chillin' in the fridge at Aldi, Whole Foods, Kroger, Target, Walmart & more - Visit https://bit.ly/3UghRHV to find a retailer near youBodyHealth - Use the code LYON20 to get 20% off your first order https://bit.ly/4gP6VtpOneSkin - Get 15% off at https://bit.ly/4xpFWuE with code DRLYONDavid Bars - Subscribe and save 10% on every order' at https://bit.ly/4zAflMBExplore More from Dr. Gabrielle LyonPremium Podcast Subscription: Ad-free episodes, key takeaway summaries, exclusive Q&A, and behind-the-scenes content https://foreverstrong.supercast.comWeekly newsletter: Recipes, podcast updates, and practical weekly insights https://drgabriellelyon.com/sign-up/Apply to become a patient: Personalized care with Dr. Lyon's clinical team https://drgabriellelyon.com/new-patient-inquiry/Connect with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drgabriellelyon/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@drgabriellelyonX (Twitter): https://x.com/drgabriellelyonFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/doctorgabriellelyonChapters00:00 - Introduction02:47 - What Creatine Is and Isn't03:24 - The Phosphocreatine Energy System04:22 - Lean Mass: Water and Training Capacity05:08 - Men vs Women Respond Differently06:29 - Vegans, Older Adults, and Sarcopenia07:11 - Creatine and the Brain08:53 - The Real Safety Profile09:31 - The Kidney and Creatinine Myth09:57 - The 56% DHT Hair Loss Claim10:37 - Contraindications and Screening12:19 - Why You Can't Eat Enough Creatine14:26 - Muscle-Centric Medicine16:44 - How to Dose It CorrectlyIf you found this episode valuable, share it with someone who would benefit from it.Disclaimers: This episode includes paid sponsorships. The Dr. Gabrielle Lyon Podcast and YouTube are for general information purposes only and do not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing, or other professional health care services, including the giving of medical advice, and no doctor/patient relationship is formed. Most of what we call "aging" may not be about time at all. It may be a nervous system stuck in stress, quietly draining your sleep, your recovery, and your long-term health. In this episode, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon sits down with Dr. Kristen Holmes to discuss:Why the hallmarks of aging- inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular decline may be symptoms of a dysregulated autonomic nervous system, and how much of your HRV (47–65%) is genetic versus trainableHow your sleep is decided during the day, not at night, and why perceiving your day as "threatening" keeps your HRV suppressed and robs you of deep, restorative sleepThe circadian "amplitude" formula for bright days and dark nights that predicts everything from menopause symptom severity to longevity, plus the ~90 minutes of natural light almost no one getsWhy late-night eating rivals alcohol for damaging your resting physiology, and how a simple 12-hour eating window gets you most of the way thereWhy the fittest people sleep less, and how all-day movement and "exercise snacks" beat a single gym blockWhen you understand that your nervous system sits underneath your sleep, energy, and pace of aging, you stop chasing fragmented fixes and start pulling the few daily levers light, movement, meal timing, consistency that move the needle.Studies & ReferencesStress and Heart Rate Variability: A Meta-Analysis and Review of the Literature — https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5900369/How to Improve Your Circadian Rhythm with Satchin Panda PhD: https://youtu.be/gM_b4t0ARG8?si=QKfpYEAh1O5lyMw8Want ad-free episodes? Blowing four times the legal limit on a breathalyzer usually means one thing, but in 2015, a judge dismissed a DWI because the driver's own gut was fermenting alcohol from an ordinary carb-heavy dinner. It's called auto-brewery syndrome, and the fuel it runs on is the same load your muscle is supposed to be clearing from your blood. In this solo episode, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon discusses:How gut yeast overgrowth turns everyday carbs like pasta, bread, and rice into ethanol that registers as real intoxication, brain fog, dizziness, and allThe specific risk factors that open the door: dysbiosis, SIFO, repeated antibiotic use, and poorly controlled diabetes or fatty liverThe three-part protocol to correct it, reduce the yeast burden, remove the carbohydrate fuel, and rebuild the microbiome, plus the carbohydrate challenge test, most doctors never runWhy skeletal muscle is your body's primary site for clearing blood sugar, and how an under-muscled body drifts into the same insulin-resistant, dysbiotic state that lets fermentation take holdWhether or not you'll ever face this rare diagnosis, you'll walk away understanding that gut health and muscle health share one supply chain and that defending your muscle is how you starve the problem at its root.Study & References:Woman beats DWI — her body brews alcohol (CBS News, 2015): https://www.cbsnews.com/news/woman-beats-dwi-with-rare-defense-her-body-brews-alcohol/Cordell & McCarthy (2013), Int. Muscle is not just something you build in the gym. Dr. Gabrielle Lyon has spent her career arguing it's the organ that actually determines how well you age, and almost none of us have been taught to think about it that way.Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, DO, is the founder of Muscle-Centric Medicine and the New York Times bestselling author of Forever Strong. She's spent over two decades studying muscle as the most overlooked organ in medicine. The line that stuck with me most: she believes we're on track to trade an obesity epidemic for a sarcopenia epidemic, and most people won't see it coming until it's already happened. It's the kind of prediction I can't stop turning over, especially knowing how many women are on these medications right now without anyone telling them how to protect their muscles while they're on them. Join the most comprehensive *female-specific community for health and longevity optimization.* After over a decade dedicated to human performance and women's health, I created this space to share everything you need to know to optimize health and lifespan. Hey, Heal Squad! We're back with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, and if you're a woman over 35, this might be one of the most important conversations you'll hear all year. For years, we've been told to eat less, do more cardio, and accept that weight gain, brain fog, low energy, and losing muscle are just part of hormones and getting older. But what if they don't have to be? In Part 2, Dr. Lyon shares what she calls the real playbook for women who want to stay strong, healthy, and independent for decades to come. She explains what actually happens to our muscles as we age, why your first and last meal of the day matter more than you think, and why resistance training isn't just about looking fit, it's one of the most powerful things you can do for your brain, metabolism, hormones, and long-term health.Maria and Dr. Lyon also bust some of the biggest myths women have been told about aging...from the idea that belly fat and muscle loss are inevitable to why walking alone isn't enough to maintain muscle after 35. Plus, Dr. Lyon shares her simple, realistic prescription for building strength at any age, including exactly how often to strength train, how much protein to eat, and why it's never too late to start. Whether you're just beginning your fitness journey or looking to level up your routine, this episode is a powerful reminder that getting stronger isn't about perfection…it's about giving your future self the healthiest, strongest foundation possible. Enjoy! HEALERS & HEAL LINERS Women don't need to spend the second half of life getting smaller, they need to get stronger. Resistance training and adequate protein are two of the most powerful tools for protecting your metabolism, brain, and long-term health. After 35, your muscles need more attention, not less. Prioritizing protein, especially at your first and last meal, and strength training consistently can help support energy, body composition, and healthy aging. It's never too late to build muscle. Whether you're 40, 60, or even 75, Dr. Lyon says your body is still capable of getting stronger (and healthier!) when you give your muscles the right stimulus. Hey, Heal Squad! If you've been hearing everyone talk about building muscle but never really understood why it's so important, this is the episode you've been waiting for. Dr. Gabrielle Lyon is a board-certified physician, longevity expert, and New York Times bestselling author of Forever Strong, and she completely flips the script on what muscle actually does for our bodies. It turns out muscle isn't just about looking toned or getting stronger ...it's one of the most powerful organs for protecting your brain, supporting your metabolism, regulating blood sugar, and helping you stay healthy as you age. Dr. Lyon breaks down the fascinating connection between muscle and brain health, why brain fog and low energy may all be connected to muscle loss, and why simply building muscles are one of the best things you can do for your long-term health. They also dive into protein...like how much you really need, why quality matters, and the surprising role essential amino acids play in building and protecting muscle. Then they tackle one of the biggest health topics right now: GLP-1 medications. Dr. Lyon explains why they are posing another “problem” and although these medications can be an incredible tool, she talks about  why protecting your muscle through resistance training and proper nutrition is the piece of the conversation too many people are missing. If you've ever wondered what you should actually be doing today to protect your physical and mental health, this episode is packed with practical advice and plenty of "I never knew that!" moments. P.S. Be sure to check out Dr. Lyon's new book too: The Forever Strong Playbook, a step-by-step guide to help transform muscle health in 6 weeks! HEALERS & HEAL LINERS Muscle is one of the most powerful organs in your body, not just for strength, but for your brain, metabolism, and longevity. Every time you move your muscles, you're investing in better cognitive function, blood sugar regulation, and healthier aging. Don't wait until you're sick to prioritize your health. As Dr. Lyon says, "If you don't have time for wellness, how are you going to have time for sickness?"  The goal isn't just to lose weight, it's to protect your muscles. Dr. Lyon challenges us to think differently about health, explaining that unhealthy muscle may be the real root of many chronic diseases and that preserving muscle is essential, especially in the age of GLP-1 medications. You'd think fear is what stops you from doing hard things. At 25, with zero rowing experience, Taryn Smith crossed the Atlantic alone. 3,000 miles, 46 days, and I learned that the fear was never the obstacle. It was the signal she was finally in the right place. In this episode, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon and Taryn Smith discuss:Why fear is a "metric of success," not a stop sign, and how to train yourself to move toward discomfort instead of away from itHow food becomes visible performance fuel when you're the only engine, and how to preserve muscle on limited calories using protein and daily amino acidsThe "long-term optimist, short-term realist" mindset that carries you through a slog with no end in sightThe post-achievement crash nobody warns you about, and why the low after a big win is predictableWhether or not you'll ever touch an oar, you'll walk away with a portable mental framework for facing anything you've been avoiding, and a clearer sense of who you are when no one's watching.Want ad-free episodes? The number on your scale tells you almost nothing about your actual health. You can lose weight while becoming less healthy—or stay the same weight while dramatically improving your metabolism, reducing your risk of disease, and adding years to your life. In today's episode, I discuss: Why the scale can completely miss what's happening inside your body and the hidden health risks it can't measure The dangerous difference between muscle and visceral belly fat, and why one protects you while the other drives disease The five health markers I pay attention to instead of body weight—including one simple measurement you can do at home How insulin resistance develops years before diabetes and the early warning signs you can catch before it's too late The goal isn't simply to lose weight; it's to build a healthier metabolism. The healthiest body isn't always the lightest one—it's the one that's functioning the way it was designed to. Resources Mentioned: Want to dive deeper into why muscle is the key to longevity? I am not nearly as concerned about my lifespan as my health span. I'd rather live 10 years less but be very capable physically and mentally than to linger an extra 10 years while physically and mentally impaired. I'm not much for gimmicks and hacks that address one thing and are promoted as cure alls. I don't believe in it. So with all that said, in this episode we are talking about muscle. My expert on the topic is Dr Gabrielle Lyon. I've known of Gabrielle for a long, long time through Functional Medicine circles. Her focus and expertise is Muscle-Centric Medicine. I am now a believer that a certain amount of muscle mass is critical for healthy aging. Not just for your physical capabilities, but also your mental abilities. I'm convinced all aspects of our bodies are intrinsically connected and the muscle in your bicep doesn't just help you lift things well, that muscle works to fortify and fuel your entire body, brain included. Since this recording, I'd say Gabrielle's notoriety has exploded. She has become the #1 evangelist, spokesperson, and recognized expert for the benefits of muscle and a primary leader in health and wellness overall. That said, I sometimes struggle with possibly a bit too much focus being given to muscle alone, and how much. I still enjoy running and riding and hiking and walking and endurance activities. But, I maintain a consistent, almost daily routine of push ups, pull ups, and dips, and will probably add more resistance activities over time. But I think you will gain valuable info from this discussion on aspects of muscle that you can address right away. The longevity world has convinced a generation of women that protein is shortening their lives. The science says they've got it backwards and the people hurt most are the ones who need protein most.In this episode, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon breaks down the protein-and-longevity fear, steelmans the strongest case against protein, then walks through what the evidence shows:The RDA (0.8 g/kg) is a deficiency floor, not a target, the intake one camp calls "dangerously high" is what federal guidelines and expert groups now recommend (1.2–1.6 g/kg)The IGF-1–cancer link is tiny (a 3–11% risk bump vs. smoking's 1,000–2,000%), and the IGF-1–mortality curve is U-shaped: the lowest levels carry ~40% higher death riskSarcopenia roughly doubles death risk (3.5× with frailty) and perimenopause stacks anabolic resistance on top, exactly when women are told to fear the foods that defend themBy the end, you'll understand the mTOR and IGF-1 science well enough that nobody online can scare you off your own dinner, plus a simple Monday-morning plan: adequate protein, front-loaded, built on minimally processed foods, with heavy lifting to match.Thank you to our sponsors:BodyHealth - Use the code LYON20 to get 20% off your first order https://bit.ly/4f7ZqM5 Our Place - Upgrade your kitchen with Our Place today. The “climate tick.” Alpha-gal Syndrome. A delayed meat allergy that makes you violently allergic to steak. Did the Lone Star tick just evolve on its own… or did someone help it? Online it's being branded the "climate tick": a tiny "weapon" some say is tied to Bill Gates, UN and WEF diet agendas, Cold War bioweapon programs, and gain-of-function research gone wrong... In this episode of Keeping It Real, Jillian Michaels dives straight into the most viral conspiracy theories. We fact-check claims that Lyme disease started as a military bioweapon project linked to Plum Island, that ticks were genetically engineered or "tuned" in labs, and that today's sudden meat-allergy crisis is a coordinated agenda to push lab-grown and plant-based meat. . We walk through the actual timelines, funding records, and declassified cold war insect-warfare operations to show why so many people connect the Lone Star tick, Alpha-gal, Plum Island, and Lyme into one story. Jillian breaks down the receipts around bio labs, gain-of-function debates, vaccine programs, exploding tick populations, and a meat allergy that's suddenly showing up in hundreds of thousands of Americans. Then, functional medicine expert Dr. Gabrielle Lyon joins the show to unpack: The Science of Alpha-gal: What it is and how to know if you are exposed. Hidden Triggers: Why red meat, gelatin capsules, dairy, lard, and even common medications (like heparin or thyroid hormones) can trigger a massive reaction.. The Symptoms: How nighttime hives, severe GI crises, and "mystery" anaphylaxis strike 3 to 6 hours after eating and often get misdiagnosed. The Exercise Connection: How physical workouts and gut permeability (leaky gut) can make your allergic symptoms worse. Practical Steps: How to prevent Alpha Gal Syndrome and subsequently what to do if you already have it. The Psychology of Fighting Cancer | Dr Valter Longo

If your body already has powerful systems designed to repair and protect you, are your daily habits helping switch them on... or working against them?Dr. Valter Longo is a professor and director of the Longevity Institute at USC, one of the world's leading researchers on aging, nutrition, and lifespan, and the author of The Longevity Diet and his latest book, Fasting Cancer. His path into this work is an unusual one. He started as a jazz performance major, chasing rock guitar, and walked away the moment they told him he had to direct a marching band. What pulled him toward aging traces back to being five years old, in the room when his grandfather died, and a question that lodged in him and never left: what if little things can make such a big difference? That question became a career. Longo walks Dr. Michael Gervais through the science of living to 110, a number drawn from two real people he followed personally, and the trade-off at the heart of aging: the body can pour its energy into growth and reproduction, or into protection and repair, but not both at once. From there he challenges one of the loudest narratives in health and performance today, the push for high protein, laying out why he believes most people are eating far more than the research supports, and what a safer balance actually looks like. The conversation moves into the work Longo is best known for: fasting-mimicking diets, why he says fasting on its own doesn't mean anything, and how cycles of eating less may activate the body's own repair and regeneration. He and Mike explore what this could mean for cancer, where Longo is careful and precise about what the science does and doesn't yet show, and they close on what it takes to unlearn a foundational belief when the evidence stops holding up. Mike opens up about how this conversation pushed against a narrative he'd carried his whole life, and why he wanted to have it anyway. In this conversation, we explore:Why aging and cancer are deeply connected, and what that means for preventionThe trade-off between growth and protection that shapes how we ageWhy Longo believes most people eat far too much proteinWhat a safer, mostly plant-based protein balance looks likeWhy fasting on its own is a meaningless word, and what to do insteadHow fasting-mimicking cycles may trigger the body's repair and regenerationWhat the science does and doesn't yet show about food and cancerWhat it takes to unlearn a belief when the evidence stops holding upIf you've ever wondered whether your daily choices are quietly helping or hurting the systems meant to keep you well, this conversation offers a science-backed place to start thinking about your health and lifestyle.A note from the team: This episode doesn't exist in a vacuum. Over the last several months, Mike has had numerous conversations on health, nutrition with world-renowned experts like Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, Dr. Jason Fung, and Dr. Tim Spector, among others. These are all rich conversations that at times hold conflicting advice and guidance. We encourage you to listen to all of them, and as always, consult your doctor on what practices are best for you. If you've been training hard, watching what you eat, and still wondering why your body isn't responding the way it used to this episode might answer a question you didn't know you needed to ask.Bone density for women over 35 is one of the most under-discussed health topics in the fitness and wellness space. Up to 20% of a woman's bone mass can be lost during the menopause transition, and that loss starts earlier than most women think, often beginning between ages 30 and 40. The choices you make right now about how you train and how you eat are writing the story of your bones for the next twenty years. In this episode, Alisha Carlson shares her personal experience with chronic dieting and underfueling what it looked like from the outside (shredded, coaching others, posting the workouts), what it cost her body on the inside (missing periods, hair loss, running on cortisol), and the moment in her kitchen that changed everything. She breaks down the research from Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, Dr. Stacy Sims, and Dr. Tyna Moore on why resistance training for bone health is non-negotiable for women in perimenopause and beyond, what adequate protein intake actually looks like, and how to stop training your body to be smaller and start building it to last. This Episode Is for You If...• You're a woman over 35 who has spent years trying to lose weight and are ready to train for something different• You've experienced signs of hormonal disruption — missing periods, hair loss, fatigue, mood changes and want to understand what's happening• You're in perimenopause or approaching it and want to protect your bone and muscle health proactively• You've been stuck in the restrict-binge cycle and are starting to suspect it's costing you more than just your results• You want evidence-based strategies from researchers who specialize in women's physiology not generic fitness adviceIf this episode landed for you, if you recognized yourself in the story of training hard, eating carefully, and still feeling like your body is working against you, there's a reason for that. But former National Lipid Association President Dr. Kevin Maki explains that LDL is just one piece of a much bigger picture and focusing on it alone can mean missing the markers that matter most.In this episode, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon sits down with Dr. Kevin Maki, former President of the National Lipid Association and co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Clinical Lipidology, to discuss:Why ApoB and Lp(a) are better predictors of heart risk than LDL and why only about 2% of people ever get Lp(a) testedWhat a beef-vs-chicken feeding study revealed about red meat and cholesterol (the LDL results came back identical at 112 mg/dL)The evidence behind the seed oil debate, including why higher linoleic acid levels tracked with lower inflammation markers across a 2,000-person datasetWhy the balance of cholesterol-raising and cholesterol-lowering foods matters more than saturated fat aloneThe simple "ABCs" framework: A1c, blood pressure, cholesterol - for actually lowering long-term cardiovascular riskBy the end, you'll know which numbers actually predict heart risk, which tests to ask your doctor for, and how to cut through the conflicting noise around fat so you can make evidence-based decisions for the long haul.Thank you to our sponsors:OneSkin - Get 15% off at https://bit.ly/4tZnOpk with code DRLYONBodyHealth - Use the code LYON20 to get 20% off your first order https://bit.ly/48SJ7AC Amp - Visit https://bit.ly/3RcmqBz to get your AI-powered at-home gym for smarter, personalized training.Explore More from Dr. Gabrielle LyonPremium Podcast Subscription: Ad-free episodes, key takeaway summaries, exclusive Q&A, and behind-the-scenes content https://foreverstrong.supercast.comWeekly newsletter: Recipes, podcast updates, and practical weekly insights https://drgabriellelyon.com/sign-up/Apply to become a patient: Personalized care with Dr. Lyon's clinical team https://drgabriellelyon.com/new-patient-inquiry/Find Dr. Kevin Maki at:Midwest Biomedical Research: https://www.mbclinicalresearch.com/ LinkedIn: / kevin-c-maki-phd-497ba34 Connect with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drgabriellelyon/TikTok: @drgabriellelyon X (Twitter): https://x.com/drgabriellelyonFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/doctorgabriellelyon Chapters00:00 - Introduction00:31 - Dr. Kevin Maki and the National Lipid Association01:04 - New dietary guidelines and the LDL confusion02:04 - What raises and lowers LDL cholesterol03:51 - Cholesterol levels from birth through puberty05:11 - The lipid panel kids should get before age 1106:42 - Lp(a): the test only 2% of people get08:18 - ApoB and the three risky particle types11:35 - Do we have evidence for "lower is better"?14:09 - The FLASH-GLICK risk factor framework17:10 - The 10% saturated fat guideline explained19:36 - Many dietary patterns can be healthy24:50 - Beef vs. chicken: identical LDL results27:10 - The balance of fatty acids that matters29:24 - Olive oil vs. corn oil feeding study31:00 - Lower for longer: 40-year risk reduction34:15 - Genetic cholesterol disorders and risk40:33 - The omega-3 index and why it matters49:10 - Are seed oils really driving inflammation?53:11 - How seed oils are processed and refined1:07:48 - Inherited beliefs and outdated nutrition science1:08:54 - Butter vs. cheese and high-fat dairy surprises1:14:48 - Exercise effects on HDL and triglycerides1:21:20 - The ABCs of reducing cardiovascular riskIf you found this episode valuable, share it with someone who would benefit from it.Disclaimers: This episode includes paid sponsorships. The Dr. Gabrielle Lyon Podcast and YouTube are for general information purposes only and do not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing, or other professional health care services, including the giving of medical advice, and no doctor/patient relationship is formed. Why Isn't Everyone Talking About Mitochondria? with Jennifer Scheinman Most people learned the word in 10th-grade biology and never thought about it again. That, argues registered dietitian and longevity expert Jennifer Scheinman, is exactly the problem. In this episode of Why Isn't Everyone Doing This?, Emily Fletcher sits down with Jennifer, a nutritionist with over 25 years of experience and a longevity expert at Timeline, the company behind the clinically studied Urolithin A supplement MitoPure, for a conversation that reframes everything from fatigue to aging to consciousness through the lens of your cells. Jennifer explains how the mitochondria work, why their decline accelerates in your 40s and 60s, and what you can actually do to slow that process. They cover the 12 biological hallmarks of aging, the cellular recycling system (mitophagy) that breaks down over time, why so many people can't produce Urolithin A on their own, and how to evaluate supplements in an industry the FDA doesn't fully regulate. They also connect it all to meditation, to stress, to perimenopause, and to the Greek myth of Persephone and the pomegranate. And at the very end: a fact about mitochondrial DNA that changes the way you think about your mother, your grandmother, and the feminine line you carry. In this episode, they explore: – What mitochondria are, what they do, and why they're more like a CEO than a powerhouse – The cellular recycling process (mitophagy) and why it slows with age – Zombie cells, inflammaging, and the 12 hallmarks of biological aging – Why aging isn't linear — and what the research says about the 40s and 60s – How meditation reduces the inflammation driving cellular decline – Urolithin A: what it is, how your gut should be making it, and why most people's isn't – How to read supplement labels and avoid "fairy dusting" and borrowed science – Timeline's clinical research: what the trials showed and how long results take – The topical MitoPure skincare line and UV-related skin aging – Why mitochondrial DNA is inherited exclusively through the maternal line – Persephone, pomegranates, 108 seeds, and the convergence of myth and molecule Key Moments: 00:00 — The question that opens the episode 03:00 — Mitochondria 101: what they really are 08:15 — Every cell except red blood cells runs on mitochondrial energy 10:00 — Mitophagy: your body's cellular cleanup crew 13:00 — Why aging accelerates in the 40s and again in the 60s 16:00 — Zombie cells and the inflammaging hallmark 19:00 — Meditation's effect on cellular inflammation — the Ziva link 25:00 — Fasting and perimenopause: what the science says for women 29:00 — How to evaluate supplements when labels aren't regulated 35:00 — Urolithin A: gut-made, often missing, and why it matters 40:00 — Why food alone won't get you there (6 cups of pomegranate juice a day) 44:00 — The clinical trials: muscle endurance at 2 months, strength at 4 months 53:00 — Urolithin A + exercise: a likely additive effect 58:00 — How Dr. Gabrielle Lyon first put this on Emily's radar 01:01:00 — The skincare line: bringing MitoPure topically 01:03:00 — Mitochondrial DNA and the matrilineal inheritance 01:05:00 — Persephone, pomegranates, and the place where science meets spirit About Jennifer Scheinman Jennifer Scheinman is a registered dietitian and nutritionist with over 25 years of experience.
