The Blasters & Blades PodcastWe dove into the trenches with the fine folks behind the Pogue One Anthology by Raconteur Press. We had on America's Sergeant Major, Spearman Burke and the infamous Authors DiNote. That would be Christopher DiNote and Jaime DiNote (aka Liska McCabe). It was a lot of fun talking about the unsung heroes behind the armed forces. We call them REMFs, POGUEs or POGs. However you wanna say it, those who support the fighting men had value. They had stories to tell, and this anthology is chalk full of them! I can't wait to see what you guys think, so join the discussion. Seriously, lend us your eyes and ears, you won't be sorry!! Once the Heroes had regrouped, they looked up to the large seating platform. The fantastically dressed man looked down at them with utter disdain. Their antics had removed all of the other competitors. Not only that, the creatures in the cages had been subdued by the small skeletons before they could even be set loose. The entire spectacle had been thrown into chaos. There could be no further rounds of competition. The Jester pointed at the fantastically dressed man, as if asking for him to award them their prize. What he received in response was not the large red jewel, but the fantastically dressed man storming away shouting. This was immediately followed up by the sound of loud horns. These were not triumphant, but rather a gathering of guards. They flooded the arena, quickly surrounding the Heroes. The Heroes readied their weapons once more, facing down dozens of guards. The Female Combatant nervously readied her damaged axes, unsure of how they would get through this new predicament. She knew the Heroes were strong, but fighting an unorganized group of mercenaries and arena hopefuls was much different than an organized royal guard. As the guards began to close in on the Heroes, a loud cracking sound could be heard from just outside the arena. The crowd erupted in a wave of panic, their joyous cheers for the battle turning into terrified screams as the first signs of danger rippled through the arena. Spectators in the stands scrambled to their feet, pushing and shoving, desperate to escape the impending catastrophe. As they made way, a large blast shot through the stands sending pieces of debris falling onto the arena. One unfortunate combatant was hit across the face with. piece of stone, sending blood and the remainder of both of his teeth flying into the dirt. A massive hole had been blown into the arena from the outside. As the dust cleared, the Heroes saw a figure standing in the newly formed gap. The Warrior Hero triumphantly walked into the arena, happy to see his old friends again. As he did so, other shadows emerged behind him. Old friends that the Heroes had met on their journey had joined the Warrior Hero on his trek, eager to assist those that had helped them. It was a sight to behold, and the crowd watched on in terror. Though they feared for their safety, they could not look away. The ragtag gang made their way into the arena behind the royal guards, ready for combat. The royal guards had been sure of their position, but now found themselves outnumbered. They threw down their weapons in defeat.   Thank you so much to Jerry for the conversation! The Jester, nursing his bruised ribs from the large man's final strike, cackled under his breath. He struggled to his feet, wincing but grinning all the same. He cradled his mandolin like an old friend, strumming a soft tune that seemed to mock the intensity of the fight they had just endured. His eyes danced with mischief, as if to mock the effort put forth by their competitors. But it was their ally, the Female Combatant, who stood frozen in awe. She had been watching from the sidelines, her heart pounding with every clash of weapons, every arrow loosed, every spell cast. Now, as the three warriors brushed off the dirt and blood like it was nothing, she found herself struggling to find words.   A big thanks to Phoebe for popping in to the show! “Why am I fighting this? Like, why am I fighting the thing that I want to write? For who? For like a teacher that I haven't seen in five years or ten years? For a critic who I don't know?” - Zoraida CórdovaZoraida Córdova doesn't care about what a book should be. When she writes, she's interested in.. well… what she's interested in. That means Zoraida doesn't prioritize following rules or meeting pre-set expectations. If she wants to write about sappy zombies, she will. If she wants to create a deep, profound novel, she will. Above all, she values creative freedom. She has always made a way for herself and her spirit to shine through her work. Whether it's writing for Star Wars or Disney's Meant to Be collection, short stories for one of her anthologies about creatures like vampires, mermaids and faeries, or her epic novel “The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina," Zoraida keeps it fresh and original. And her readers love it! By following her own passions instead of trying to satisfy what she “should do,” Zoraida delivers something readers crave—authenticity.Zoraida Córdova is an award-winning author celebrated for her genre-blending, magical tales like “Labyrinth Lost,” the first book in her Brooklyn Brujas series, which earned her an International Latino Book Award. Her versatility spans adult literary fiction, romance, young adult fiction, editing anthologies, and even adding a touch of romance to the Star Wars universe. In this episode, Zoraida reflects on the importance of writing for yourself, shares the “about the author” blurb that changed her life, and details her tween years as a green-haired Wiccan screamo-punk (you can't make this stuff up). Let's just say that Zoraida's commitment to rejecting the expectations placed on her began at an early age. (And she has the journals to prove it!)***For her reading challenge, Screw the Comfort Zone, Zoraida leans into her love of breaking the rules. To break free from her comfort zone. For her reading challenge, she selected a list of books she has read over the past few years that she adored but seemed "hard to pitch" to publishers because of how they defy convention. Difficult to pitch but still infinitely loveable.

The second is the letter Annie wrote to Jim after his death — and as she dealt with her own mental health issues and suicidality in the wake of it. When someone dies by suicide, people want it to be someone's fault, so they can (hopefully) feel less like it's their fault. The speakers discuss erotica's nuances, challenging perceptions of it being a "lesser" form, which it's not! They emphasize its diversity in exploring fantasies safely, its potential for self-discovery, and the pains authors suffer from some societal attitudes dismissing its literary merits.Writing intimate scenes requires developing characters' emotions & motivations beyond just physical details. Researching unfamiliar experiences brings authenticity, exposing authors and readers to new perspectives.
