It's a tale of two halves on Dad Bod Rap Pod this week. In the intro segment we take a look back at The Fugees' first album Blunted on Reality, released 30 years ago in the thick of one of hip-hop's best overall years, 1994. For now, let's charitably call it an uneven debut from a group still finding its voice. Please click play on the episode to hear a lot more of our thoughts. This album is full of baffling decisions, yelling, and very few cool moments. After the break, hosts Nate LeBlanc, Demone Carter and David Ma turn our frowns upside down and discuss some of our favorite underground hip-hop releases of 2024 thus far, kind of a halfway through the year check in. We have nuanced takes on and praise for Heems' album LAFANDAR, Mach-Hommy's brilliant RICHAXXHATIAN, and Schoolboy Q's occasionally floaty Blue Lips. If you're reading this please consider supporting DBRP by joining our Patreon, where for a few dollars a month you get exclusive access to a steady stream of bonus audio segments, eclectic and well-researched playlists, as well as tons of music recommendations from us as well as our community of homies. www.patreon.com/dadbodrappod DBRP is mixed by Taylor Weng, produced by Demone Carter, explained via theme song by Cutso and DEM ONE, has art by Dewey Saunders, is booked by David Ma, contains the high pitched and extra loud laughter of Nate LeBlanc, and is heard via the mighty Stony Island Audio podcast network.

It had a budget of just $1 million, a lead actor wearing a toupee, and the baddie in the first draft of the script was a monkey. But the first James Bond film, ‘Dr. No', which began shooting in Jamaica on 16th January, 1962, kicked off a phenomenally successful franchise that's still a staple of cinema today. Its star, Sean Connery, had been picked out by producers after his appearance in a Disney production, but was marketed as a former lorry driver with little acting experience. Concerned that Connery lacked the sophistication of Bond's background, director Terence Young took him on a tour of swish casinos, posh members clubs and his Savile Row tailors. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how Connery came to improvise one of the movie's most iconic moments; explain why Ian Fleming was first dismissive, then delighted by his casting; and trace the origins of the 007 formula that endures through all of Cubby Broccoli's subsequent productions… Further Reading: • The Bond bunch: the failed contenders for coveted role (The Independent, 2006): https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/features/the-bond-bunch-the-failed-contenders-for-coveted-role-423454.html • ‘The Making of DR. Justin is joined by John Michael Heath from EAP Society to mark 2023 as the 20th anniversary of the release of "2nd to None," the follow-up to the smash compilation "30 #1 Hits." Unrestrained by the limitations of only including #1 chart hits, "2nd to None" showed a broader flavor of what Elvis was capable of, but the constraints of the physical medium also placed limits on just how many selections could feature from each era of Elvis' career. However, "2nd to None" also offered something its predecessor couldn't - a brand spanking new Elvis song, "I'm A Roustabout," unearthed from a rare acetate kept in the private collection of songwriter Winfield Scott, and John was among the first group of fans to hear it played publicly at Graceland back in 2003. The guys also reminisce about the CD's marketing campaign, including numerous official RCA-approved remixes of "Rubberneckin'" (did you know there was more than just Paul Oakenfold's?!) and spend time comparing tracklists with "Hitstory," the final disc in the trilogy which was issued only as part of a box set with the earlier compilations, and touching upon the extremely rare official "third" remix that never got a commercial release, Paul Oakenfold's take on "I Got Stung." And, of course, Justin brings up John and EAP Society co-host Jamie Kelley's recent A.I. reconstruction of "Poor Man's Gold," and we hear a little bit of behind the scenes of how it came about. Then, in a shocking twist, a revelation is made about one of the music clips featured in TCBCast 276 that no one seems to have noticed or called us out for! "2nd to None" is still widely available to hear on digital platforms, and in CD & Vinyl formats, as well as in packages with "30 #1 Hits" and "History."  You can hear more from John and Jamie, including "Poor Man's Gold" at YouTube.com/EAPSociety. B. Cox reviews hip-hop duo Gang Starr's fifth album Moment of Truth as it turns 25. After a four year hiatus from their acclaimed 4th album 1994's Hard To Earn, Guru and DJ Premier returned to to the lab to craft their latest album among a changing landscape. Hip-hop, once thought to be a fringe fad when they debuted and when they first left, was now starting to explode commercially and was being sought after beyond the urban communities and into corporate America. In between albums, the two had their share of work and turmoil. Guru recorded another installment of his famed Jazzmatazz series and also faced two different pending legal charges and battled some personal demons, while Premier became a recognized as one of the top producers in the game by producing for multiple acts during the break, but suffered some losses of loved ones during this time as well. The break and the adversity both men during it faced fueled their latest effort; crafting a well balanced and rounded out piece that reflected everything which made Gang Starr one of the best groups of their time. Guru's lyrics and emceeing rose to yet another level with his wisdom and experiences of the past few years driving his narrative to sights not seen before with Premier's beats meeting his mate's effort to a cinematic, with a Premier-type grit that served the soundtrack well. They were joined by a wide variety of featured guests such Inspectah Deck, M.O.P, Scarface, Freddie Fox, Big Shug, Shiggy Sha, a young G-Dep and singers K-Ci and JoJo. The combination led to arguably the group's most candid and complete work to date. The album featured three singles: "You Know My Steez" "Royalty" and "The Militia". Despite with no major charting singles, the album was certified gold and stands as a contender for the crown jewel of the legendary duo's catalog.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comSupport The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesAlbumism: Gang Starr's 'Moment of Truth' Turns 25 | Anniversary Retrospective https://albumism.com/features/gang-starr-moment-of-truth-album-anniversaryRockTheBells: Gang Starr's 'Moment of Truth' at 25https://rockthebells.com/articles/gang-starr-moment-of-truth-turns-25/Glide Magazine: 25 Years Later: Revisiting Gang Starr's Locked In "Moment of Truth" https://glidemagazine.com/289978/25-years-later-revisiting-gang-starrs-locked-in-moment-of-truth/Ambrosia For Heads: DJ Premier speaks About How Real Moment of Truth was Hip-Hop and Gang Starrhttps://ambrosiaforheads.com/2018/04/gang-starr-moment-of-truth-making-of-interview-video/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
