On today's episode of the "Helping Families Be Happy" podcast, host Christopher Robbins, co-founder of Familius Publishing, husband, father of nine, author, fisherman, backpacker, and aspirational musician based in the Central Valley of California, talks to Michael Hempseed, Director of Frontiers of Hope, a specialist mental health service about how to help our children deal with anxiety and stress during the holidays. He is the co-author of the book “Calming Your Child: De-escalating Tantrums, Anxiety, Aggression, and Other Challenging Behaviors.”   Michael is also the author of “Being a True Hero: Understanding and Preventing Suicide in Your Community”. He has spoken to Frontera, New Zealand, Post fire and Emergency New Zealand and many others. Michael gained an honors degree in psychology from the University of Canterbury in 2008 and he has had the opportunity to speak at a TED event in 2016.   Episode Highlights 01:53: Michael discusses the increasing trend of very young children displaying heightened anxiety. Many are so anxious they cannot attend school. 02:37: Michael highlights the ripple effect of a child's anxiety on their family. He shares an anecdote of parents needing to take six months off work to care for their severely anxious child, underlining the significant impact on the entire family. 03:18: Christopher inquiries about the topic of sensory issues in children, as mentioned in the book "Calming Your Child". He seeks clarity on what sensory issues entail and emphasizes the importance of understanding and recognizing them in children. 04:10: Michael emphasizes that sensory issues aren't limited to just sounds but affect all senses. He shares statistics from his mental health service, noting a significant number of individuals with moderate to severe sensory issues, especially among young children. 05:02: Christopher emphasizes the intensity of her daughter's discomfort, using the word "excruciating" to describe her experience. He notes the challenge it poses for her to stay calm given her heightened perception of sound. 06:42: Michael stresses that children don't act out without a reason, but rather are dealing with overwhelming emotions they can't express properly and this overwhelming feeling in children can manifest as aggressive behaviours like punching or yelling. 07:51: Christopher introduces the idea of perspective and how individuals perceive the world differently. He emphasizes that when people, especially children, act out, it's a form of communication. 08:28: Michael discusses the challenge of sensory issues. Many who experience them believe it's a normal part of life since they've always felt that way. He stresses the importance of patience and effort in understanding and working through these challenges. 08:55: Christopher queries why upcoming holiday season time of the year can be particularly stressful for families, especially those with children. 09:21: Michael addresses interpersonal stress, particularly when families gather, mentioning scenarios where certain relatives may not get along. 10:10: Christopher discusses the importance of finding ways to make the holidays less stressful and seeks professional advice and tips on managing holiday stress. 11:20: Michael talks about how volunteering can help young people gain perspective and feel a sense of purpose. He suggests taking children to visit the elderly. He also provides guidance on how to initiate conversation, emphasizing the mutual benefits. 12:26: Michael discusses the importance of sleep, mentioning it is a long chapter in his book. He talks about the negative effects of sleep deprivation. He relates sleep deprivation to mood and behaviour in both adults and children. 14:10: Michael highlights that not every sign of stress or behavioural issue necessitates counselling. Encourages trying alternative solutions like volunteering before resorting to counselling. 15:39: Michael notes that if a child's behaviour is affecting the family's lifestyle, like avoiding social events, it might be time to seek help. He emphasizes the importance of observing not just the intensity but the recurrence of problematic behaviours. 16:05: Christopher poses a question about when to consider professional help and seeks advice for parents to help their children in the upcoming year. 17:15: Michael discusses the benefits of free play for children. He mentions that it helps children develop problem-solving skills and improve social interaction. 18:42: Michael differentiates between forcing someone to practice an instrument and allowing them to enjoy it. He shares a study about Nobel Prize winners in the sciences having artistic and musical hobbies. Points out the value of art and music in enhancing cognitive abilities. 19:07: Christopher shares his belief that adults are usually grateful for having learned an instrument and often regret if they quit playing. 19:24: Michael discusses studies that indicate a surge in the amount of homework kids have today. He mentions the overburdening of young children and the need to reintroduce the concept of fun in learning. 20:10: Christopher shares a possibly apocryphal story from World War 2 about Winston Churchill emphasizing the importance of art even in dire times.   3 Key Points Michael discusses the increasing trend of very young children displaying heightened anxiety, with many being so anxious they cannot attend school. Christopher speaks about the intensity of his daughter's discomfort due to sensory issues, highlighting that many behavioral problems are reactions from individuals feeling overwhelmed by sensory stimuli rather than intentional acts of rebellion. Michael emphasizes the significance of sleep, discussing its impact on mood and behavior in both adults and children, and relates sleep deprivation to various negative effects.   Tweetable Quotes “Merely living in the era of COVID has deeply impacted individuals regardless of personal sentiments.” - Michael “Many behavioral problems aren't intentional acts of rebellion but are reactions from individuals feeling overwhelmed and distressed by sensory stimuli.” - Michael "Children don't act out without a reason, but rather are dealing with overwhelming emotions they can't express properly." - Michael "Not every sign of stress or behavioral issue necessitates counseling. Encourages trying alternative solutions like volunteering before resorting to counseling." - Michael   Resources Mentioned Helping Families Be Happy Podcast Apple Podcast Editing

5,229 construction workers died by suicide in 2016 (the last year for which CDC numbers are available).    The industry category of “construction and extraction” has a higher rate of suicide than any other industry category.    That's why suicide is a topic worthy of discussion on a construction-related podcast. That's why we're talking to Kevin Sells today.    People who aren't involved in construction might wonder why in world those numbers are so high. If you are in the industry, however, you know that stress levels increase dramatically when supply chains experience hiccups that affect workflow. Also, many commercial construction jobs involve long stretches of time away from family. Unfortunately, many construction companies have almost no protocols or programs in place for addressing mental health concerns.    Creating a healthier overall bid-build process was the desire behind the new methodology proposed by Project Summit, an initiative that Kevin is involved in. Project Summit is total collaboration strategy intended to get back to a system based on producing predictable cost outcomes through true relationship and trust. The connection that this approach has to suicide is that it advocates a one-hard-hat philosophy that consciously places value on all workers and disciplines. It focuses on putting employees and the project first.   Kevin shares about the frustration–even the embarrassment–that he and others in the industry took so long to recognize this problem.    Kevin points out that we can't realistically recruit young talent and muscle if we can't show that we're concerned about all-around employee wellness. This means considering several things: work site conditions, time away from family, length of the work day, consistency of jobs, availability of medical care for traveling workers, additional concerns that exist with military veterans, who might have lingering.   Kevin explains that it's about actually listening to and hearing the responses when we ask a coworker, “How are you doing today?”    Kevin emphasizes that no program will work if the leaders within the organization are not genuinely invested in promoting mental health. Leaders must realize their obligation to advocate in this area.   Here are a few specific resources that Kevin recommends for owners and managers interested in addressing mental health concerns with their companies: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention The Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention United Group Services Youtube Channel (search for suicide prevention) Cal Beyer The Suicide Prevention Hotline:  Phone #: 988 Text line: 741741    Kevin's megaphone message: Our industry has a problem in relation to mental illness. It's killing more workers than anything else. We need to address it.   (By the way, here's a link to the Jennifer Castenson Forbes article in which she quotes Eddie.) I am extremely grateful that Rabbi Hammer shared his story with us on this episode.   What you'll learn from this episode: Rabbi Hammer's journey through his grief and how he found resilience The importance of mental health awareness and suicide prevention Self-care strategies in times of adversity What we can do to help those suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts.   Gain a greater understanding of why it is so important to prioritize mental health and learn tangible action steps that you can use to support someone who is struggling.   We all have an obligation to care for each other, as Rabbi Hammer explains so powerfully in this podcast.   "..our greatest attribute is life. We want to live, we want to embrace life. And everyone obviously deserves a shot at that. Everyone has to embrace and remember it, and certainly to take care to even those who are suffering, to somehow remind them of that and bring them there."   "..because people are afraid to say the word suicide. It's something that as I said before, remains a taboo. People are afraid if they mention the word that, it will promote and that it will certainly encourage others and so on and so forth. And that's a mistake."   "But ultimately, when someone is experiencing those things, it's a downward spiral. And they feel trapped, so trapped in a place of darkness and despair that they just don't know if there are any viable options out there."   ".. the vast majority, not all the vast majority of people, particularly adolescents who die from suicide, do not want to die. They want to live. They just don't have direction guidance, or they don't have the know how of what they're supposed to do for themselves..."   I hope you enjoy this episode! Real Men Feel is about reminding men that they are human and entitled to feel and express the full range of emotions. Some of those emotions can you have feeling like absolute shit, but that never means that you are shit. If you've read any of my books, seen me speak live, listened to many Real Men Feel episodes, perhaps heard me as a guest on other shows, or even know me as an actual, physical, human being, you are aware that I don't hide the fact that I've tried to end my life multiple times. September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day, and I don't make a big thing about this day because, frankly, it pisses me off. Every day should be suicide prevention day for all of us. But I get that plenty of people still experience a stigma around any discussions of mental health or suicide. And I have long believed that one of the best ways to prevent suicide is to talk about it. So I shall. Men account for three-quarters of deaths by suicide in many countries. While the pathway to suicide for each individual is unique, some common risk factors have been shown to contribute to the higher suicide rate among men. These risk factors include using more lethal means, reduced help-seeking, harmful substance use, social disconnection, conformity to some masculine norms, and stressful life events such as unemployment and relationship breakdown. The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day this year is "Creating hope through action." My talking to you right now is an action. You listening right now is an action. You checking with a dear friend and asking how they are? is an action. Working with a therapist, a coach, or a men's group is a positive action you might take. By the way, those are all things I've been doing this summer. I invite you to show support for those struggling with suicidal attempts or ideation and to remember loved ones who died of suicide. Anne Moss Rogers will never forget the day she got the news that no parent wants to hear: her son had died. And then a second piece of news came like a punch to the gut: he had died by suicide. Anne Moss and her husband knew he had been struggling with alcohol and drugs, but they didn't realize he had been using substances to mask thoughts of suicide. On top of their loss and grief, they were forced to wrestle with the questions that often come in the wake of suicide: Did they miss the signs? Was there more they could have done? How could such a wonderful person like their son feel so hopeless? In this episode, Anne Moss shares her powerful story of surviving and healing after her son's death, how she overcame the questions and guilt that come when someone close dies by suicide and her work as a mental health and suicide prevention speaker, reaching others who are hurting and educating people on the signs of suicide. Anne Moss uses her expertise to pull back the curtain on a tough topic that we often want to sweep under the rug and gives practical advice on how to talk about suicide, how to help someone who might be contemplating suicide and how to process grief following a suicide.   Listen to discover:  Anne Moss's story and how she has processed the grief of her son's death How Anne Moss overcame the guilt and questions surrounding her son's death The increasing rates of suicide among young people and what might be driving it The signs that someone might be contemplating suicide What to say and what not to say to someone contemplating suicide Correct language for describing suicide Tips for parents concerned about their children   Suicide is becoming a rising cause of death, especially among young people, and while it's a tough topic to talk about, it's one that is too important to ignore. In fact, 86% of people who think about suicide let their intentions be known in some way. Did you know “adverse childhood experiences” (otherwise known as “ACEs”), are connected to later life suicide. According to the CDC, the following potentially traumatic childhood experiences are connected to many life threatening health risks:experiencing violence, abuse, or neglectwitnessing violence in the home or communityhaving a family member attempt or die by suicidesubstance use problemsmental health problemsinstability due to parental separationhousehold members being in jail or prisonAbout 61% of adults surveyed have experienced at least one type of ACE. The more ACEs a child experiences, the more likely they will have later life consequences like “injury, sexually transmitted infections, maternal and child health problems (including teen pregnancy, pregnancy complications, and fetal death), involvement in sex trafficking, and a wide range of chronic diseases and leading causes of death such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and suicide.” ACEs are what are known as “social determinants of health” and cause toxic stress in young people that impact their ability to pay attention, make decisions and form stable relationships. The Good NewsThe strongest buffer for kids is a relationship with at least one loving, caring, responsive adult - a family member, a teacher, a coach, a mentor.Having a source of reliable nurturing protects them from further harm and helps them develop self-regulation skills. In addition a healthy child-adult relationship gives them a sense of safety in the storm and a glimmer of hope for things to come.In this episode I speak with Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Kimberly O'Brien about how our youth can feel “emotionally naked” and how caring adults can help provide does of support that fuel resilience and self-esteem, and ultimately prevent suicide.About Kimberly Hayes McManama O'Brien, Ph.D., LICSWKimberly O'Brien, PhD, LICSW is a Clinical Social Worker in the Sports Medicine Division and Female Athlete Program at Boston Children's Hospital, as well as a Research Scientist and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. We start the show by exploring how and why equine therapy services help trauma patients. This is followed by a discussion on how grant requests from HHRF support the continued research.   The panel moderators consist of Pebbles Turbeville, the Executive Director of  Horses & Humans Research Foundation, and Tara Mahone, the CEO & Founder of Equine Immersion Project, LLC.
