Community solar allows households and businesses to access the benefits of solar energy, such as lower electricity costs, regardless of whether they're able to host a system on their own roof.In this episode of Grid Talk, host Marty Rosenberg talks with Jeff Cramer who is the president and CEO of Coalition for Community Solar Access. “We've figured out a way for any electricity customer to be able to participate and benefit from local clean energy deployment in less than five minutes with guaranteed savings,” said Cramer. And interest in community solar projects is growing, with more states considering community solar programs.“It's thousands of projects around the country in over 20 states across the country.”By the end of the year there will be six gigawatts of community solar on the system. Cramer expects that to grow significantly in the future. “What Community Solar offers is it offers a sort of a hub for the deployment of, a central hub for the deployment of distributed generation.”Jeff Cramer has served as President and CEO of CCSA since its founding in 2015. Prior to CCSA, Cramer co-founded and served as a Partner at 38 North Solutions, a Washington DC public affairs firm that focused exclusively on federal clean energy and sustainability policies and advocacy. He has a B.A. in government, philosophy from Clark University.
What a pleasure, what an honor to have the original Energy Gang on our show to celebrate our 100th Episode. The wit of Katherine Hamilton and the laugh of Jigar Shah were our inspiration 5 years ago when we got drunk at the Red Lion pub near Piccadilly to launch our show. The “ambitious” business plan was to create a tiny European copycat of the Gang. 900k downloads later, this is where we are.Katherine Hamilton is Chair at 38 North Solutions, a public policy firm focused on clean energy and innovation, and one the main artisan of the Inflation Reduction Act; Jigar Shah is Director at the Loan Program Office at the US Department of Energy, managing hundreds of billions USD to finance the Energy Transition. The topic of this special show is the following: Let's assume we are in 2030, Elon Musk is on Mars, did the energy transition work? Our conversation encompasses the decarbonisation of the grid, the future of Nuclear and Geothermal, the electrification of transport, Hydrogen, and many other topics. In the end, we deliver a positive message: “We are succeeding the Energy Transition thanks to the thrust and imagination of the new generation.”

For Katherine Hamilton, working at Dominion Virginia Power ran in the family. Her grandfather Leon built a career there. As a young engineer, she learned the ins and outs of the electric utility business, and was inspired by the problem solving and creativity her job required. “It was a very innovative place to be. It wasn't that they were necessarily innovative because they wanted to be creative. It was out of necessity. They had to be because they had to serve their customers.”But over time, creativity faded into the background for many power providers. Katherine is pushing utilities to bring innovation back to the forefront – and she believes policy can help do that. Katherine is the co-founder and chair of 38 North Solutions, a public policy firm focused on promoting clean energy policy at the state and federal level. She has a storied career in energy, ranging from utilities to finance to trade groups. And she has played an instrumental role in passing ambitious pro-clean energy policies. This week, Brad talks with Katherine about her policy work – like the recent infrastructure bill and the historic Inflation Reduction Act – and how it will push utilities to be more innovative. This podcast is produced by GridX. GridX is the Enterprise Rate Platform that modern utilities rely on to usher in our clean energy future.
The Inflation Reduction Act is the largest climate and energy package in the history of the United States. It will unleash some $370 billion for energy and climate, and it will touch every sector of the economy, from manufacturing to renewable energy communities or environmental justice. The IRA could launch America back into international leadership in climate mitigation, says Katherine Hamilton, longtime host of The Energy Gang podcast and our guest in today's episode – our 25th, marking one year since the launch of Watt Matters. The EU is watching the US' steps and is highly concerned about the protectionist nature of the Inflation Reduction Act. However, the tax incentives envisioned in the IRA could scale up clean energy technology and provide real carbon reductions – and that “will allow the US to become a much better global neighbour,” said Hamilton. Katherine Hamilton is Chair of 38 North Solutions and is now a regular contributor to The Carbon Copy podcast. Hamilton has led several councils of the World Economic Forum as a global policy and technology thought leader and is currently Chair of the Global Future Council on Clean Electrification. She served as President of the GridWise Alliance, advocating for smart grid funding in the Obama Administration's Recovery Act. Enjoy the show! After months of uncertainty the United States passed the biggest climate bill in its history, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Coming on the heels of the passage of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, and combined with executive action across government agencies, the actions represent a major turning point in US climate action at the federal level. But what is actually in the IRA, and what comes next for implementation? How does the US approach compare to Canada's actions on climate and how will Canadian companies and citizens be impacted by these new developments? What should Canada do to prepare for this new world – to both protect our industries and leverage the opportunities that may arise? On Season 4 Episode 3 of Energy vs Climate, David, Sara, and Ed ‘gang' up on the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act with Katherine Hamilton, formerly of the Energy Gang podcast and break down the act's impact on energy policy north of the border.EPISODE NOTES@1:28 Welcoming Katherine Hamilton, Chair of 38 North Solutions@2:28 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)@3:25 Historic bipartisan deal ahead of IRA@5:26 Democrats claim to cut CO2 emission by roughly 40% by 2030@7:23 Tax credits for low- and middle-income communities@7:29 Supporting a just transition for coal communities@14:26 Over $20 billion to set up national non-profit green bank @15:03 Canada's Infrastructure Bank, Growth Fund, and Canadian Innovation and Investment Agency@ 30:29 Alberta's industrial carbon offsets and free allocationsenergyvsclimate.com@EnergyvsClimate
Just a few weeks ago, the Biden administration's historic climate package looked like it was on the brink of ruin after Senator Joe Manchin walked away from negotiations for a second time. But behind the scenes, backdoor negotiations were underway. At the end of last month, Manchin and Schumer announced they had made a deal – and on Sunday, the Senate passed major climate legislation for the first time in American history. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 has over $360 billion for energy and climate provisions. It's a historic opportunity to supercharge clean energy and give the country a fighting chance at slashing emissions in time to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. So what's in the bill? And what comes next? Guest: Katherine Hamilton is chair of 38 North Solutions. The Carbon Copy is a co-production of Post Script Media and Canary Media. The Carbon Copy is supported by GridX. President Biden wants to slash America's carbon emissions by half in a decade. He can't achieve that goal without passing Build Back Better, a massive social-spending bill that devotes half a trillion dollars to clean energy. Build Back Better would be the biggest American investment in climate technologies and programs ever. The stakes couldn't be higher. But with a slim Democratic majority in the Senate, a single dissenting vote legislator threatens to derail the bill. And right before Christmas, Senator Joe Manchin declared that he will not vote for it. So are Biden's climate ambitions dead? Not quite. There's still hope that Senator Manchin will come around – even if it means another period of intense negotiations. This week: an insider gives an optimistic assessment of how we move ahead with America's most ambitious piece of climate legislation. Guest: Katherine Hamilton, chair of 38 North Solutions.
