In this episode, we sit down with Mathias Madsen, CEO of HolePunch, and take a wild ride through the cutting edge of peer-to-peer JavaScript development. Mathias shares his journey from accidentally discovering JavaScript in college to becoming a prolific contributor with over 1,500 open source modules. His passion? Building decentralized, peer-to-peer systems where JavaScript isn't just for the browser—it powers the entire stack. We dive deep into how HolePunch is reimagining application distribution with their Pair system—essentially turning peer-to-peer into a first-class citizen for distributing full applications, not just files. No hosting, no servers — just apps shared directly, BitTorrent-style. And because packaging and distributing Node-based apps can be painfully complex, they took things a step further by building a new runtime: Bear.js.Bear is refreshingly "bare": it strips away the heavy, opinionated APIs bundled into Node or Deno, leaving just the JavaScript core and a powerful module system. What's revolutionary here is Bear's ability to run the same codebase across desktop, mobile, and even tiny embedded devices—swapping out engines like V8, JavaScriptCore, or JerryScript depending on the platform's needs. This allows Mathias' team to write backend logic once, share it across all platforms, and iterate at lightning speed.Key takeaways:-Peer-to-peer can go far beyond media sharing — it's being used for full app distribution.-Bear.js decouples JavaScript from specific platforms, creating a universal backend that just works anywhere.-Modular design isn't just a philosophy — it's the secret to HolePunch's rapid development pace.-The combination of React Native for UI and Bear.js for backend creates an insanely productive development pipeline, fully cross-platform.If you're into JavaScript, peer-to-peer tech, or just love hearing about developers breaking the mold, this one's for you.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/javascript-jabber--6102064/support.
On today's show, we're chatting with Julia O'Mara, the co-founder of Pickle, the peer-to-peer fashion rental marketplace. Pickle's goal is making it easier and more affordable to rent high-quality clothing within communities – on today's episode, Julia will tell you about how she was working in business and product engineering when she had this idea: a gap in the fashion market. And it led her to build Pickle, a first-of-its kind platform, which – in less than a year – has boomed onto the scene, recirculating 100,000 items, top lenders paying their NYC rent with their Pickle earnings! – and the company raising over 12 million in Series A funding. In Manhattan alone, 1 in 4 females aged 18-35 have used Pickle. But Pickle had scrappy beginnings, Julia literally ran around NYC doing photoshoots with micro-influencers to get the first closets uploaded. And, in this episode, you'll hear about the entrepreneurial hustle of this fashion tech founder to watch, and the cultural impact Pickle is having on how young women think about clothing consumption. I think you're gonna love it, so – let's dive right in! DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE: [3:24] The idea for Pickle started out as a completely different app – a social polling app. [10:39] When Julia knew it was the right time for her career to go the entrepreneurial route. [12:47] The insight that led to Pickle's biggest pivot, in spring 2022. [14:42] Pickle's big differentiator is that it's a peer-to-peer rental marketplace, similar to Uber and AirBnb within the sharing economy. [17:44] When you're building this kind of marketplace, you have to figure out how to attract both lenders and renters. [25:24] How Pickle works as a side hustle for your closet. [35:11] Insights from Pickle's Series A fundraising round, where they raised $12 million and were called the AirBnb of fashion. [41:11] Opening a brick-and-mortar store for closet rental in NYC. [47:33] Future innovations in the circular fashion space, and what's next for Pickle. Send us a textThe digital landscape is undergoing a profound transformation as privacy awareness grows. What once seemed like a fringe concern has become mainstream, with users increasingly questioning how their data is used and stored. Mathias Buus Madsen, CEO of Holepunch and a leading voice in open source development, stands at the forefront of this shift with a radical vision: eliminating servers entirely. After more than a decade dedicated to peer-to-peer innovation, Matthias has watched public perception evolve dramatically. "Things were different," he reflects on earlier days when Facebook was continuously growing and privacy concerns were dismissed with "I have nothing to hide." Today's reality looks markedly different, with each passing year bringing greater privacy consciousness—a trend Matthias describes as "bad for the world but very good for peer-to-peer."Holepunch, backed by Tether, has developed what they call the "Pear Runtime"—a foundation for building applications that operate without servers. Their flagship app Keet demonstrates these principles in action, functioning like Telegram but with a crucial difference: complete decentralization. "If we stop working, the apps will still work," Matthias explains, highlighting the revolutionary independence these applications maintain. This serverless approach creates extraordinary freedom for developers. Without infrastructure costs to consider, features can be added based purely on their value to users, not their operational expense. The encryption-first design means even the developers themselves can't access user data—sometimes frustrating users accustomed to service recovery, but ultimately providing unprecedented privacy protection. The intersection of AI with peer-to-peer technology presents particularly fascinating possibilities. While centralized AI models raise serious privacy concerns (who knows what happens to data shared with these systems?), decentralized approaches could empower users to make better decisions without surrendering their personal information. As Matthias puts it, the combination could be "the most exciting almost in human history" or, if hyper-centralized, "the most dystopian and scary thing."This episode was recorded through a Descript call on May 13, 2025. The hardest part of being a passive, cash flow investor is knowing who you can trust with your hard-earned money and life savings. With so many operators and opportunities, it's difficult to know what to invest in, especially if you don't have a lot of experience. Currently, there are many Real Estate projects in big trouble with Limited Partners losing their investments as a result of poor underwriting and execution on the part of General Partners. Pat Zingarella, CEO of Invest Clearly, is providing passive investors impartial feedback about sponsors and opportunities before they invest. Pat created Invest Clearly, a review website for Limited Partners to find General Partners and learn about them from peer reviews from other investors.

Ahmad emphasized that while RBAC has served as the backbone of organizational security for decades, its centralized nature and limitations in cross-domain applications necessitate the shift to ABAC. He also highlighted a critical aspect of his research: leveraging cryptographic primitives like attribute-based group signatures to enhance security and privacy while enabling decentralization without relying on blockchain.Sean and Ahmad explored the technical and operational implications of ABAC. Ahmad described how this model uses user attributes—such as location, role, and organizational details—to determine access permissions dynamically. This contrasts with RBAC's reliance on predefined roles, which can lead to rule exploitation and administrative inefficiencies.Ahmad also discussed practical applications, including secure digital health systems, enterprise environments, and even e-voting platforms. One innovative feature of his approach is "attribute anonymity," which ensures sensitive information remains private, even in peer-to-peer or decentralized setups. For example, he described how his system could validate an individual's age for accessing a service without revealing personal data—a critical step toward minimizing data exposure. The conversation expanded into challenges organizations face in adopting ABAC, particularly the cost and complexity of transitioning from entrenched RBAC systems. Ahmad stressed the importance of education and collaboration with governments and industry players to operationalize ABAC and other decentralized models. The episode closed with Ahmad reflecting on the robust feedback and collaboration opportunities he encountered at the conference, underscoring the growing interest in decentralized and privacy-preserving solutions within the cybersecurity industry. Ahmad's research has attracted attention globally, with plans to further develop and implement these models in Australia and beyond.Listeners are encouraged to follow Ahmad's work and connect via LinkedIn to stay informed about these transformative approaches to cybersecurity.____________________________This Episode's SponsorsThreatlocker: https://itspm.ag/threatlocker-r974____________________________ResourcesLearn more and catch more stories from Australian Cyber Conference 2024 coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/australian-cyber-conference-melbourne-2024-cybersecurity-event-coverage-in-australiaBe sure to share and subscribe!____________________________Catch all of our event coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/technology-cybersecurity-society-humanity-conference-and-event-coverageTo see and hear more Redefining CyberSecurity content on ITSPmagazine, visit: https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-cybersecurity-podcastTo see and hear more Redefining Society stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-society-podcastWant to tell your Brand Story Briefing as part of our event coverage?Learn More

In this episode of Crazy Wisdom, Stewart Alsop hosts ~littel-wolfur to explore spaced repetition, the dynamics of learning algorithms, and the philosophy behind Urbit. They break down Urbit's promise as a peer-to-peer platform with roots in a deep, almost otherworldly commitment to resilience and a long time horizon. Alongside ~littel-wolfur's take on memory as the strange balance of laziness and persistence, they dig into shrubbery, Urbit's latest namespace innovation, and the challenge of creating tools that last. From generational shifts to the philosophy of technology, Stewart and ~littel-wolfur contemplate whether Urbit's rebellious craftsmanship might be the foundation for a more enduring internet. You can connect with ~littel-wolfur on Twitter.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversation!Timestamps00:00 Introduction to the Crazy Wisdom Podcast00:22 Understanding Spaced Repetition01:39 Personal Experiences with Spaced Repetition04:08 Challenges in Spaced Repetition Software06:45 Building a Flashcard App on Urbit09:03 Introduction to Shrubbery on Urbit13:26 The State of Urbit and Its Future22:01 The Long-Term Vision of Urbit and Bitcoin28:37 Balancing Internet Time with Parenthood29:37 Challenges of Urbit's Ease of Use30:22 New Blood in the Urbit Community31:15 Building Communities on Urbit32:38 Twitter's Complexities and Elon Musk's Influence41:02 AI's Role in Software Development49:52 Transhumanism and AI Art54:50 The Future of Craftsmanship in Programming55:45 Conclusion and Contact InformationKey InsightsThe Power and Paradox of Spaced Repetition: Stewart and ~littel-wolfur discuss spaced repetition as an ingenious blend of laziness and persistence. By setting reminders to review information just before it's forgotten, spaced repetition acts as an effortless yet powerful memory tool. Although the practice demands daily discipline, it becomes an invaluable mechanism for retaining knowledge across vast timescales.SuperMemo and Incremental Reading: ~littel-wolfur shares his experience with SuperMemo, the original spaced repetition software that takes the method even further. SuperMemo's “incremental reading” allows users to gradually extract information from lengthy texts, breaking down complex learning into manageable, spaced chunks. For ~littel-wolfur, this approach goes beyond mere memorization; it turns learning into an immersive, long-term commitment. The Urbit Experiment: Urbit, a decentralized peer-to-peer network and OS, represents a radical rethinking of the internet. Stewart and ~littel-wolfur examine Urbit's potential as a platform where users truly own and control their data, echoing ideals of early Web 1.0. As the “long-haul project” of the tech world, Urbit cultivates an almost timeless ethos, making it as much a social experiment as a computing system.Shrubbery and Namespace Innovation: A core element of Urbit, “shrubbery” introduces a namespace that enables users to organize, connect, and retrieve information from across their digital universe. ~littel-wolfur explains how shrubbery allows users to link pieces of data like conversation notes, wikis, and documents, making it a versatile learning platform on Urbit. The elegance of this integration hints at a future internet where information can be personalized and seamlessly connected.Craftsmanship and Digital Resilience: ~littel-wolfur and Stewart touch on the fading art of craftsmanship in tech, which often gets lost in the layers of abstractions that modern software relies on. For ~littel-wolfur, coding on Urbit feels like working in a digital woodshop, where the focus is on intentionality and precision rather than flashy or disposable tech. This philosophy of craftsmanship offers a refreshing take on the art of creation in software, hinting at the durability and authenticity Urbit hopes to embody.AI's Limitations and Overconfidence Trap: The episode also highlights the limitations of AI, especially when it encourages laziness or over-reliance. While AI can help automate routine tasks, ~littel-wolfur warns of its tendency to produce fragile, overly complex solutions that unravel under scrutiny. They caution that true understanding comes not from shortcuts, but from engaging deeply with the work—a point that resonates with their belief in disciplined learning practices like spaced repetition. The Value of Optimism and Long Time Horizons: Amid a society obsessed with quick wins and rapid monetization, Stewart and ~littel-wolfur see Urbit's culture as a refreshing outlier, filled with builders who value curiosity and long-term thinking. This “thousand-year mindset” stands in contrast to much of the tech industry, where projects are often driven by immediate financial returns. By embracing a philosophy that resists the pressure for instant success, Urbit aligns itself with a vision of digital infrastructure that, rather than fueling transient trends, aims to be a lasting foundation for generations to come.

This week on the Build a Vibrant Culture Podcast, Nicole interviews Mark Budzinski. Mark is a management executive who advises business leaders how to get the most out of their investment in analytics. With an acute interest in organizational behavior, his book is published on Amazon under the title “Peer-to-Peer Culture.”In this episode we explore concepts from Mark's book. Mark shares his hard won culture philosophy and shares authentically his business philosophy. Mark believes in business, perhaps the only thing more difficult than founding a startup company is growing the enterprise to the next level. He answers the question, Why do so many who try fall short?Because leaders of businesses too often are distracted by the rigors of day-to-day operations and seduced by big-company thinking. CEOs of emerging firms should not rush to implement the practices, processes, and policies popular at larger organizations. Instead, they should focus on employee behavior and a culture anchored in trust and teamwork. In Peer-to-Peer Culture and in this episode of the Build a Vibrant Culture Podcast Mark and I outline how to:- Inject trust into the lifeblood of a company- Maximize team performance, using pay plans as an enabler- Acquire new customers with empathy - Confront conflict with honesty- Encourage unambiguous communication and better decision-makingIf you are an executive or human resource leader in a growing organization, this book will challenge your assumptions about business and invite you to install a company culture in which staff, customers, and investors thrive.Mark's Book: https://www.amazon.com/Peer-Peer-Culture-Takes-Businesses/dp/B08CM5T986Visit Mark on Social Media: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-budzinski-b9ba36/Facebook: https://cleandatainc.com/Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe to the Build a Vibrant Culture podcast for more insights on creating thriving workplaces!
