Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comIn Oklahoma, religious extremism is reshaping public education, political rhetoric, and community life. In this episode, Faithful Politics hosts Will Wright and Pastor Josh Burtram sit down with Rev. Dr. Shannon Fleck, the new Executive Director of Faithful America. Fleck discusses her journey from ministry to public advocacy, the rise of Christian nationalism in Oklahoma, and the battle against religious indoctrination in public schools. She also unpacks the implications of recent legislative moves, including a controversial social studies curriculum backed by religious right power players like Kevin Roberts, Dennis Prager, and David Barton. Fleck explains how the fight for true religious liberty is being reframed as a war on 'anti-Christian bias' and what it means for churches, schools, and marginalized communities across the nation.Guest Bio:Rev. Dr. Shannon Fleck is the Executive Director of Faithful America, the largest online community of Christians advocating for social justice. Previously, she served as the head of the Oklahoma Faith Network, where she championed interfaith dialogue and public advocacy in a deeply conservative state. Fleck's work focuses on countering religious extremism and advocating for genuine religious liberty, especially in the context of public education and policy.Resources & Links:Faithful America: faithfulamerica.orgRev. We talk all the time about prayer but ... what exactly is it? What "counts" as prayer? Is prayer a merely intellectual exercise, or conversation, or monologue to God? Or is it embodied? Trimble is to be published weekly and is available at www.tobeencouraged.com and all the podcast directories.https://www.inumc.org/bishop/office-of-the-bishop/Episode 105. Title: Three Significant Takeaways from Post General Conference “InTheKnow” SessionIntroduction:In this episode of "To Be Encouraged," host Rev. 1Justin Kingston engages in a rich conversation with guests Rev. Russ Abel and Rev. Dr. Aleze Fulbright following the General Conference. The episode delves into pivotal changes and key discussions that emerged from the General Conference, offering valuable insights and reflections for listeners.Takeaway 1: Embracing Inclusivity and Removing Barriers- The removal of prohibitive language concerning LGBT individuals from the Book of Discipline marks a significant step toward inclusivity within the United Methodist Church.- Changes in the ordination process now facilitate inclusivity, ensuring that sexuality no longer acts as a barrier to progression.- The decision to allow same-sex marriages and empower pastors in selecting whom to marry underscores a more welcoming and accepting approach within the church.Takeaway 2: Regionalization and Constitutional Amendments- Regionalization emerged as a major topic during the General Conference, with discussions focusing on U.S.-centric matters and ministry context relevance.- The upcoming vote on regionalization in the annual conference sessions in 2025 raises the importance of education and information sharing to guide decisions.- The constitutional amendments process, involving all annual conferences submitting information for potential voting, highlights the comprehensive nature of decision-making within the church.Takeaway 3: Communication, Consensus, and Decision-Making- Guest speakers stress the significance of open communication with superintendents and congregational dialogue to navigate disagreements effectively.- Seeking consensus and guidance from God remains a central theme in decision-making processes, guiding pastors and congregations through challenging discussions.- The emphasis on supporting one another, remaining focused on serving the world's needs, and expressing gratitude underscores the importance of unity and shared purpose within the church.Closing:As the episode draws to a close, the profound implications of the General Conference decisions are reiterated, emphasizing the ongoing journey toward inclusivity, unity, and informed decision-making within the United Methodist Church. Listeners are encouraged to engage in open dialogues, seek consensus, and embrace a spirit of inclusivity and understanding as the church moves forward in its evolving landscape.Rev. Rev. Celeste interviews Rev. Dr. Raymont Anderson, spiritual leader of the Center for Spiritual Living Greater Baltimore. He's got a passion for self-development, for personal transformation and for self-awakening. His bliss is to be a teacher, a mentor, a speaker, a minister and more! His mission is to educate, elucidate, emancipate and empower people. He teaches workshops and classes and is an author!Growing up with a fundamental Christian background, he was taught that LGBTQIA people were sinners and abominations. But he is clear that it is just the opposite. He read many books, including "Gay is a Gift" by Salvatore Sapienza (https://www.amazon.com/Gay-Gift-Salvatore-Sapienzabook/dp/B0030ZRZDM/ref=sr_1_1dchild=1&keywords=Gay+Is+A+Gift&qid=1598377726&sr=8-1) so he now knows that being LGBTQIA is miraculous, marvelous and fantastic and he wants to support people in being bold, unapologetic and magnificent in their gayness. For those who are depressed due to spiritual or religious oppression, he wants to encourage them to shine brightly. Rev. Celeste gave him kudos for facing it head on and she shared her spiritual breakthrough and how she released her self-inflicted racism, sexism and homophobia. Rev. Anderson reminded us of the Audre Lorde quote: “There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle because we do not live single-issue lives.” We are grateful for ministries that support people unconditionally.Rev. Dr. Raymont Anderson has had an eclectic spiritual path. While being a licensed CSL minister, there is also an intersection where shamanistic training, magic and reiki are some of the tools that assist him in being a better person. After a tumultous series of life challenges (including a death and breakup), he discovered that reiki is a cousin to chi and he studied to become a reiki master to keep his channel clear, keep his chakras open, his consciousness open and his thoughts pristine and life affirming. He intends to keep his cup full. The discovery of a distant relative who is Native opened up his exploration into shamanism andd to learning about being a medicine person. He was advised to tread gently upon the Earth and do what you are here to do.Raymont is a retired interpretor for the members of the deaf community. He bridges the gaps to meaningful living by giving access through interpreting for them. Rev. Celeste complimented him on how he handles racially insensitive colleagues. He learned patience from clueless high school teachers and administrators who thought they could engage Black students by giving them music to dance.Raymont was the creator of S.T.A.R.S. (Sticking Together Always Results in Success) to support non-hearing people performing in plays. He also created B.E.L.I.E.V.E. (Being Empowered Living Inspired Exemplifying Victory Everyday) bringing the theatrical opportunities to the non-hearing performers.Rev. Raymont got into martial arts because he was bullied as a child. He saw his first Bruce Lee films (double feature) and he immediately started studying it. He saw martial arts as a spiritual path first and as a way to support his well-being. Fighting was never his intention.Comic books were his escape from an abusive home. He started using the comic books as modern day mythology, the study of the human journey. We can use the gifts and power for good.Ray is a visual artist and is ready to re-invent himself, explore creativity from his dreams and share it.Find him at www.raymontanderson.com or on Facebook and at cslgreaterbaltimore.orgRev. Last night I had a conversation with Rev. Dr. Stacey Edwards Dunn, founder of Fertility for Colored Girls (FFCG) an organization that provides financial, mental and community support for couples with fertility challenges. With the wake of the George Floyd tragedy, I began to think about how I can do my part to help; at times feeling like my podcast about fertility is insignificant in comparison to other problems happening in the world. What I realized is that I can make sure Pollinated acknowledges and integrates the fertility challenges felt by women of all different races and ethnicities because what I know for sure is fertility challenges share no preference of color. But what may be different are factors like the availability of treatment and community. In this episode Reverend Stacey and I talk about the African American culture around fertility conversations - she talks about a common myth among black women that makes struggling to conceive so hard to talk about- which is a large contributor to why she went through much of her IVF journey alone. I also ask Reverend Stacey about her faith in God and whether that was questioned on her journey. And listen until the end to hear Rev. Stacey's message to my mom @theresasaghbini WARNING this episode contains amazingly hilarious interruptions from a toddler Remember I said we're cultivating a fertile mind, body and sprit for our seeds to grow.
