Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs: - 2174 (in 'The Day of the Resurrection, the new Creation') - Jesus rose from the dead "on the first day of the week." Because it is the "first day," the day of Christ's Resurrection recalls the first creation. Because it is the "eighth day" following the sabbath, it symbolizes the new creation ushered in by Christ's Resurrection. For Christians it has become the first of all days, the first of all feasts, the Lord's Day (he kuriake hemera, dies dominica) Sunday: We all gather on the day of the sun, for it is the first day [after the Jewish sabbath, but also the first day] when God, separating matter from darkness, made the world; and on this same day Jesus Christ our Savior rose from the dead. - 640 (in 'The Empty Tomb') - “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.” The first element we encounter in the framework of the Easter events is the empty tomb. In itself it is not a direct proof of Resurrection; the absence of Christ's body from the tomb could be explained otherwise. Nonetheless the empty tomb was still an essential sign for all. Its discovery by the disciples was the first step toward recognizing the very fact of the Resurrection. This was the case, first with the holy women, and then with Peter (abbreviated). - 641 (in 'The Appearances of the Risen One') - Mary Magdalene and the holy women who came to finish anointing the body of Jesus, which had been buried in haste because the Sabbath began on the evening of Good Friday, were the first to encounter the Risen One. Thus the women were the first messengers of Christ's Resurrection for the apostles themselves. They were the next to whom Jesus appears: first Peter, then the Twelve (abbreviated). - 643 (in 'The Appearances of the Risen One') - Given all these testimonies, Christ's Resurrection cannot be interpreted as something outside the physical order, and it is impossible not to acknowledge it as an historical fact. It is clear from the facts that the disciples' faith was drastically put to the test by their master's Passion and death on the cross, which he had foretold. The shock provoked by the Passion was so great that at least some of the disciples did not at once believe in the news of the Resurrection. Far from showing us a community seized by a mystical exaltation, the Gospels present us with disciples demoralized ("looking sad") and frightened. For they had not believed the holy women returning from the tomb and had regarded their words as an "idle tale". When Jesus reveals himself to the Eleven on Easter evening, "he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen." - 652 (in 'The Meaning and Saving Significance of the Resurrection') - Christ's Resurrection is the fulfilment of the promises both of the Old Testament and of Jesus himself during his earthly life. The phrase "in accordance with the Scriptures" indicates that Christ's Resurrection fulfilled these predictions. - 626 (in 'Christ in the tomb in his body') Got a Bible question? I was introduced to his work through his 50-part series ‘Awakening from the Meaning Crisis', in which John leverages his staggering familiarity and understanding of an enormous amount of the worlds philosophical, psychological, spiritual / religious, and historical literature, combined with his own insights and experiences, to put forward a contribution to the apparent ‘meaning crisis' which much of the global culture faces today. I not only share John's conviction that we are currently confronting such a circumstance, but I've also been exploring and writing about the role which bitcoin may play in the emergence of a ‘solution' to that ‘problem'. In this first discussion, we don't discuss bitcoin at all, but rather focus on identifying what the ‘meaning crisis' is, and how we might have found ourself in this situation. It's my hope that this will be the first of several discussions with John, as it seems to me that he has much useful wisdom to share in my journey of attempting to discover and understand ‘deeper meaning', and what role, if any, bitcoin is to play in it. This is a recording of a speech given by Aurelien Portuese at a joint Institute of Economic Affairs and Information Technology and Innovation Foundation conference called 'The Meaning of Competition: Assertive Antitrust Enforcement and The Digital Economy' on Thursday 4th November 2021. In May 1946, Hayek delivered the seminal Stafford Little Lecture at Princeton University, laying out his influential ideas of competition as a rivalrous process by which information is discovered. Celebrating the 75th anniversary of the lecture, the conference reinvigorated Hayek's legacy in these times of aggressive antitrust enforcement in the digital economy. Jointly organised by the Schumpeter Project on Competition Policy at the ITIF, and the IEA's Regulatory Affairs Programme, we debated current conceptions and misconceptions of the meaning of competition in the digital era. Aurelien Portuese is director of The Schumpeter Project on Competition Policy. The Schumpeter Project advances a dynamic framework for competition policy in which innovation is a central concern for antitrust enforcement, not a secondary consideration. He is also an adjunct professor of law at the Global Antitrust Institute of George Mason University, and at the Catholic University of Paris. Christmas is one of the defining points of the year, for believers and non-believers alike. Archbishop Stephen Cottrell and Biblical scholar Dr Paula Gooder explore the Advent themes that turn our thoughts to eternity and the real meaning of our lives, and the Christmas stories themselves: what Jesus' birth means, how the world changes because of it, why Christmas is much more hopeful but also darker than we may think, and why it's all about love. Stephen Cottrell is the Archbishop of York and the author of more than 20 books, including 'Walking Backwards to Christmas' and 'Let it Slow: An Advent Calendar with a Difference'. His most recent is 'Dear England', a letter to the country on why the Christian narrative still makes sense today. Paula Gooder is a renowned Biblical scholar and theologian, the Chancellor of St Paul's Cathedral and the author of numerous academic and popular books including 'Journey to the Manger: Exploring the Birth of Jesus' and 'The Meaning is in the Waiting: The Spirit of Advent'.

We are beyond excited about today's premier hitting close to home! Following the last month's debut under the Moon Patrol moniker on 'The Meaning of Time III' compilation, our very own Gilles Wasserman is releasing his first EP! Long time in the making, the five-track "Emma's Hiding" EP produced together with his life partner Irina Kotik sees the light via the Leipzig-based A Friend In Need record label. Each track on the EP explores a particular range of, sometimes uneasy, emotions. Each built on a rich, contrasting sonic palette of the intricate organic beats and the dreamy, slightly melancholic melodies refined by the openly computerized, synthetic elements. The inherent difference between the two creates a curious harmonic tension, like a call for spiritual decoding of humanity extending ourselves across a posthuman machine-hybrid world. Closing the journey, EP's namesake "Emma's Hiding" is an introspective, airy saga gradually evolving into a wonderfully unsettling hypnotic state. Once wandering beats decisively settle the pace; floating soundscapes arise onto a peaceful, reflective background; and the crisp, casually nostalgic keyboard melody merges with a robotic, albeit still in analog form, roll call; and you have a feeling of figuring it all out - the voice sample adds an unexpected dimension, steering the thoughts towards the greater vitality of our still socially gated human connections. Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs: - 644 (in 'The Appearances of the Risen One') - Even when faced with the reality of the risen Jesus the disciples are still doubtful, so impossible did the thing seem: they thought they were seeing a ghost. "In their joy they were still disbelieving and still wondering."...Therefore the hypothesis that the Resurrection was produced by the apostles' faith (or credulity) will not hold up. On the contrary their faith in the Resurrection was born, under the action of divine grace, from their direct experience of the reality of the risen Jesus. - 645 (in 'The Condition of Christ's Risen Humanity') - By means of touch and the sharing of a meal, the risen Jesus establishes direct contact with his disciples. He invites them in this way to recognize that he is not a ghost and above all to verify that the risen body in which he appears to them is the same body that had been tortured and crucified, for it still bears the traces of his Passion. Yet at the same time this authentic, real body possesses the new properties of a glorious body: not limited by space and time but able to be present how and when he wills; for Christ's humanity can no longer be confined to earth, and belongs henceforth only to the Father's divine realm. For this reason too the risen Jesus enjoys the sovereign freedom of appearing as he wishes: in the guise of a gardener or in other forms familiar to his disciples, precisely to awaken their faith. - 999 (in 'How do the dead rise?') - How? Christ is raised with his own body: "See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself"; but he did not return to an earthly life. So, in him, "all of them will rise again with their own bodies which they now bear," but Christ "will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body," into a "spiritual body." (abbreviated). - 652 (in 'The Meaning and Saving Significance of the Resurrection') - Christ's Resurrection is the fulfilment of the promises both of the Old Testament and of Jesus himself during his earthly life. The phrase "in accordance with the Scriptures" indicates that Christ's Resurrection fulfilled these predictions. - 112 (in 'The Holy Spirit, interpreter of Scripture') - Be especially attentive "to the content and unity of the whole Scripture". Different as the books which compose it may be, Scripture is a unity by reason of the unity of God's plan, of which Christ Jesus is the center and heart, open since his Passover. - 108 (in 'The Inspiration and Truth of Sacred Scripture') - If the Scriptures are not to remain a dead letter, Christ, the eternal Word of the living God, must, through the Holy Spirit, "open (our) minds to understand the Scriptures." (abbreviated). - 2763 (in 'The Summary of the Whole Gospel') - All the Scriptures - the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms - are fulfilled in Christ. The Gospel is this "Good News" (abbreviated). - 2625 (in 'The Age of the Church') - - 601 (in 'He died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures') - 981 (in 'The Power of the Keys') - 1120 (in 'The Sacraments of the Church') - 1122 (in 'The Sacraments of Faith') - 1304 (in 'Confirmation') Got a Bible question? On this podcast, I talked with T. S. Flanders of 'The Meaning of Catholic' about the history of Africans in the Americas, beginning with the first Africans in New Spain, France, and the English colonies, to the 2nd Civil War in America (1861-65), the Jim Crow era (1865-1965) to the present. This was a broad conversation that explored some topics more in-depth than others and offers a compelling narrative about how the history of Africans and their descendants in American cannot be told outside the history of Black Catholicism in America. Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs: - 640-641 (in 'The Empty Tomb') - Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen." The first element we encounter in the framework of the Easter events is the empty tomb. In itself it is not a direct proof of Resurrection; the absence of Christ's body from the tomb could be explained otherwise. Nonetheless the empty tomb was still an essential sign for all. Its discovery by the disciples was the first step toward recognizing the very fact of the Resurrection. This was the case, first with the holy women, and then with Peter...Mary Magdalene and the holy women who came to finish anointing the body of Jesus, which had been buried in haste because the Sabbath began on the evening of Good Friday, were the first to encounter the Risen One. Thus the women were the first messengers of Christ's Resurrection for the apostles themselves (abbreviated). - 645 (in 'The Condition of Christ's risen humanity) - By means of touch and the sharing of a meal, the risen Jesus establishes direct contact with his disciples. - 443 (in 'The Only Son of God') - He distinguished his sonship from that of his disciples by never saying "our Father", except to command them: "You, then, pray like this: 'Our Father'", and he emphasized this distinction, saying "my Father and your Father" (abbreviated). - 654 (in 'The Meaning and Saving Significance of the Resurrection') - Justification consists in both victory over the death caused by sin and a new participation in grace. It brings about filial adoption so that men become Christ's brethren, as Jesus himself called his disciples after his Resurrection: "Go and tell my brethren." We are brethren not by nature, but by the gift of grace, because that adoptive filiation gains us a real share in the life of the only Son, which was fully revealed in his Resurrection (abbreviated). - 660 (in 'He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father') - The veiled character of the glory of the Risen One during this time is intimated in his mysterious words to Mary Magdalene: "I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brethren and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. "This indicates a difference in manifestation between the glory of the risen Christ and that of the Christ exalted to the Father's right hand, a transition marked by the historical and transcendent event of the Ascension. - 2795 (in 'Who art in Heaven') - In Christ, then, heaven and earth are reconciled, for the Son alone "descended from heaven" and causes us to ascend there with him, by his Cross, Resurrection, and Ascension (abbreviated). Want to support the ministry and get access to exclusive content? Go to: http://patreon.com/logicalbiblestudy Matthew 28: 1-10 - 'He has risen from the dead and now he is going before you into Galilee.' Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs: - 500 (in 'Mary ever-virgin') - Against this doctrine the objection is sometimes raised that the Bible mentions brothers and sisters of Jesus. The Church has always understood these passages as not referring to other children of the Virgin Mary. In fact James and Joseph, "brothers of Jesus", are the sons of another Mary, a disciple of Christ, whom St. Matthew significantly calls "the other Mary". They are close relations of Jesus, according to an Old Testament expression. - 2174 (in 'the Day of the Resurrection: the new Creation') - Jesus rose from the dead "on the first day of the week." Because it is the "first day," the day of Christ's Resurrection recalls the first creation. Because it is the "eighth day" following the sabbath, it symbolizes the new creation ushered in by Christ's Resurrection. For Christians it has become the first of all days, the first of all feasts, the Lord's Day (he kuriake hemera, dies dominica) Sunday: "We all gather on the day of the sun, for it is the first day [after the Jewish sabbath, but also the first day] when God, separating matter from darkness, made the world; and on this same day Jesus Christ our Savior rose from the dead." - 641 (in 'The Empty Tomb') - Mary Magdalene and the holy women who came to finish anointing the body of Jesus, which had been buried in haste because the Sabbath began on the evening of Good Friday, were the first to encounter the Risen One. Thus the women were the first messengers of Christ's Resurrection for the apostles themselves (abbreviated). - 654 (in 'The Meaning and Saving Significance of the Resurrection') - Justification consists in both victory over the death caused by sin and a new participation ingrace. It brings about filial adoption so that men become Christ's brethren, as Jesus himself called his disciples after his Resurrection: "Go and tell my brethren." To support the ministry and get access to exclusive content, go to: http://patreon.com/logicalbiblestudy John 8: 21-30 - 'When you have lifted up the Son of Man then you will know what I am He.' Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs: - 211 (in 'a God merciful and gracious') - By giving his life to free us from sin, Jesus reveals that he himself bears the divine name: "When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you will realize that "I AM"." (abbreviated) - 653 (in 'The Meaning and Saving Significance of the Resurrection') - The truth of Jesus' divinity is confirmed by his Resurrection. He had said: "When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you will know that I am he." The Resurrection of the crucified one shows that he was truly "I AM", the Son of God and God himself (abbreviated). - 1693 (in 'Life in Christ') - Christ Jesus always did what was pleasing to the Father, and always lived in perfect communion with him. Likewise Christ's disciples are invited to live in the sight of the Father "who sees in secret," in order to become "perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect." - 2824 (in 'Thy Will be done on earth as it is in heaven') - In Christ, and through his human will, the will of the Father has been perfectly fulfilled once for all. Jesus said on entering into this world: "Lo, I have come to do your will, O God." Only Jesus can say: "I always do what is pleasing to him." In the prayer of his agony, he consents totally to this will: "not my will, but yours be done" (abbreviated). - 2825 (in 'Thy Will be done on earth as it is in heaven') - Although he was a Son, [Jesus] learned obedience through what he suffered." How much more reason have we sinful creatures to learn obedience - we who in him have become children of adoption. We ask our Father to unite our will to his Son's, in order to fulfill his will, his plan of salvation for the life of the world. We are radically incapable of this, but united with Jesus and with the power of his Holy Spirit, we can surrender our will to him and decide to choose what his Son has always chosen: to do what is pleasing to the Father. Vasubandhu lived in northern India and Nepal in the 4th century CE. He was a renowned teacher in the Sarvastivadin School of Buddhism but later converted to Mahayana Buddhism under the influence of his brother Asanga. In this talk Kulaprabha introduces us to a work of his dealing with the conditions necessary for the arising of the Bodhicitta - here translated as Bodhi Resolve. In particular, she compares and contrasts Vasubandhu's Four Factors as they are described in this text with Sangharakshita's description and evocation of them in his book 'The Meaning of Conversion in Buddhism'. The Four Factors are: 1. Contemplation of All Buddhas 2. Contemplation of the Faults and Perilous Aspects of the Body 3. Seeking the Most Supreme of All Fruits of the Path 4. Kindness and Pity for Beings From the talk Vasubandhu's Treatise on Generating Bodhi Resolve given at the London Buddhist Centre, September 2009 *** Help keep FBA free for everyone!
