In this heartfelt, humorous, and deeply human conversation, Ian sits down with longtime friend — artist, filmmaker, professor, and Enneagram Seven — Steve Taylor. You may know him as the legendary provocateur who "invented irony for Christians," but in this episode, we explore the terrain beneath the creativity, the energy, and the relentless forward motion that has defined so much of his life. Together we wade into the deeper waters of the second half of life — aging, character, grief, spiritual maturity, limitations, and the sacred invitation to move from doing to being. Steve speaks candidly about the shifting landscape of life at 67: the habits that no longer serve him the tender emergence of compassion learning to sit with grief rather than outrun it the uncomfortable art of slowing down how filmmaking and teaching have reshaped his inner life and the courageous (and often comical) struggle of a Seven learning to live in the present moment We talk about marriage, mortality, the ache of unfinished dreams, the sweetness of gratitude, the pains and gifts of aging, and the spiritual practices that are slowly rewiring Steve's relationship with presence. Tune in to hear this rich conversation about Enneagram transformation, emotional intelligence, creativity, and the inner work of becoming whole.     ABOUT STEVE TAYLOR Steve Taylor is a filmmaker, writer, producer and recording artist who earned his "Renaissance Man" stripes (Prism Magazine) from a body of work that's garnered him multiple Grammy, Billboard, Telly, Addy and Dove awards and nominations. A southern California native, he was raised in Denver, Colo., and studied music and film at Colorado University. In 1983, Taylor began a career as a recording artist that spanned 12 years, selling over one million albums worldwide and garnering him two Grammy nominations for "Meltdown" (1984) and "Squint" (1993). In the process, he made history as the only artist to twice win Billboard Music Video Awards for self-directed music videos. As a concert artist, Taylor headlined four international tours, including acclaimed appearances at L.A.'s Universal Amphitheater and London's Hammersmith Odeon. He was also lead singer in the MCA-signed modern rock band Chagall Guevara. Follow on Facebook or Instagram Sketch Film Website

Barry Avrich is a Renaissance man, and his creativity knows no boundaries. From crafting brilliant advertising campaigns for Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, and Frank Sinatra's final concerts to directing over fifty documentaries that expose the power, ego, and humanity behind fame, he's lived by one lesson from his father—don't blend in. In this conversation, Barry opens up about his unlikely path from Montreal to the Silver Screen, the thin line between ambition and addiction to power, and why storytelling is his calling. We explore the making of The Last Mogul, Prosecuting Evil, and The Road Between Us, and his belief that movies can still change hearts, minds, and even history. This year, Barry is being honoured with the 2025 Horatio Alger Award, one of Canada's most distinguished recognitions. The award celebrates Canadians who have triumphed over adversity to achieve extraordinary success while giving back to others. For Barry, whose films often illuminate resilience and moral courage, the award feels like the story coming full circle.

Anthony Napolitano: Forced Into Early Retirement and Now a Renaissance Man

I Used to be Somebody

This month we tackle a topic we haven't talked much about...Forced Retirements. Anthony Napolitano had a very successful career in the high-tech world. Then he was laid off not once, but twice by two big corporations right around when he was 50 years old. That was two years ago, and since then he has plunged into the world of early retirement with great enthusiasm, (which is an understatement.) His friends joke that he doesn't have a "Type A personality," he has a "Type-Anthony personality".  Anthony has an analytical mind and devised a personalized Life Retirement Plan. He bases his plan on the four pillars of Health, Mindset, Purpose and Relationships. He even grades himself every year. He was a star baseball player in high school and then went on to play four years of college division 1 baseball at Loyola-Marymount College. So in (un)retirement, Anthony is a natural as a high school coach. He loves being the assistant coach for the girls volleyball team. He also works as a wine educator at a local winery in his tiny mountain town of Julian, CA, just outside of San Diego. He does a little bit of everything at the winery, from picking grapes to hosting wine tasting events. You will love Anthony. He's full of wonder and personality. Although Carl points out that he is the star of the podcast, Anthony clearly steals this month's show. • More about Anthony Napolitano: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anthonynapolitano • Anthony's Blog "For the Napos": https://forthenapos.com • Episode Content: https://pickleballmediahq.com/blog/anthony-napolitano-interview-rorced-into-early-retirement-and-now-a-renaissance-man • Sponsored by How to Retire and Not Die:  https://garysirak.com/how-to-retire-and-not-die • Sponsored by Capital Advantage: https://capitaladvantage.com/promotion/retirement-planning-guide • I Used to be Somebody World Tours:  https://pickleballmediahq.com/tour/all-tours • Subscribe to I Used to be Somebody newsletter:  https://pickleballmediahq.com/contact/subscribe

If anyone would know what it takes to be a modern-day “Renaissance Man”, it would be Doug Casey, who was described by his co-author as a mix of James Bond, Indiana Jones, and Socrates. His new book with Matt & Maxim Smith, “The Preparation”, is a workbook for families who know there is a better way to invest the most important years of a person's life than college. The four years are split into 16 cycles, where you will build a variety of skills, all while traveling the world to experience the culture and grow an international contact list. You will learn to fly a plane in Alaska, study to become a chef in Europe, sail around the tip of South America, learn to fight in Thailand, and get licensed to operate heavy machinery in the USA, all while becoming an EMT, cowboy, welder, hacker, and farmer. It is the ultimate education to make someone bulletproof to whatever the system throws our way. — Guest Links: The Preparation: https://amzn.to/477bSIc International Man: https://internationalman.com/  — Watch the video version on one of the Macroaggressions Channels: Rumble: https://rumble.com/c/Macroaggressions  YouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UCn3GlVLKZtTkhLJkiuG7a-Q?si=DvKo2lcQhzo8Vuqu  — MACRO & Charlie Robinson Links Hypocrazy Audiobook: https://amzn.to/4aogwms The Octopus of Global Control Audiobook: https://amzn.to/3xu0rMm Website: www.Macroaggressions.io  Merch Store: https://macroaggressions.dashery.com/  Link Tree: https://linktr.ee/macroaggressionspodcast Activist Post Family Activist Post: www.ActivistPost.com  Natural Blaze: www.NaturalBlaze.com  Support Our Sponsors C60 Power: https://go.shopc60.com/PBGRT/KMKS9/ | Promo Code: MACRO Chemical Free Body: https://chemicalfreebody.com/macro/ | Promo Code: MACRO Wise Wolf Gold & Silver: https://macroaggressions.gold/ | (800) 426-1836 LegalShield: www.DontGetPushedAround.com  EMP Shield: www.EMPShield.com | Promo Code: MACRO Christian Yordanov's Health Program: www.LiveLongerFormula.com/macro  Above Phone: https://abovephone.com/macro/ Van Man: https://vanman.shop/?ref=MACRO | Promo Code: MACRO The Dollar Vigilante: https://dollarvigilante.spiffy.co/a/O3wCWenlXN/4471  Nesa's Hemp: www.NesasHemp.com | Promo Code: MACRO Augason Farms: https://augasonfarms.com/MACRO  —

Send us a textWhat happens when uncertainty becomes your superpower? In this riveting conversation with Christian Ray Flores—entrepreneur, high-performance coach, and philanthropist—we explore how extreme adversity can transform into extraordinary strength.Christian's story reads like a gripping novel: witnessing military coups, living as a refugee while his father was imprisoned in a concentration camp, observing civil wars unfold, and seeing the Soviet empire collapse firsthand. Rather than being crushed under these experiences, Christian developed what he calls "anti-fragility"—the ability to not merely survive uncertainty but to thrive because of it. "The biggest risk you can take is not taking any risks," he shares, revealing how this mindset propelled him from trauma to becoming a top pop artist across Eastern Europe in his twenties, and later, a successful entrepreneur and coach. His formula is surprisingly simple: push 20% beyond your comfort zone while maintaining 80% within it—consistently, daily. The conversation takes a fascinating turn as Christian evaluates his life across five dimensions: mental health, physical health, community service, spirituality, and relationships. His perfect score in community service stems from 25 years of philanthropic work across four continents, including founding the Ascend Academy for children in Africa. His spiritual practice includes the transformative power of Sabbath—a weekly ritual of divorcing identity from productivity and experiencing pure joy.Perhaps most striking is Christian's approach to relationships, particularly his 25-year marriage where "the spark" remains vibrantly alive. His secret? "Your job is to make your wife radiant with joy." This isn't just a poetic sentiment but backed by systems: weekly dates, daily breakfasts prepared, annual marriage retreats (never missed in 25 years), and regular vacations together.Ready to redefine what success means in your life? Verrocchio looked at his work, looked at Da Vinci's and legend has it he set down his brush for good at that point, seeing himself surpassed already by Da Vinci's talent. This episode takes a glance at the life of Lorenzo as the quintessential "Renaissance Man." In his lifetime, not only was he a devoted head of his family, but a clever statesman, a patron of art, literature, and philosophy, and an exceptional architect and poet. More masterfully, Lorenzo had to combine all of these to create decades of cultural production which made concrete the fledgling ideas of his grandfather Cosimo into what we define today as the Renaissance. Through his civic engagement, Lorenzo inspired a generation of patronage that would not only inspire Florentines, but the wider world of European nobility. Central to Lorenzo's narrative is the bloody drama of the Pazzi Conspiracy, the graceful beauty of large-scale mythological painting, and the revival of carnal and evocative vernacular poetry. Follow us/shop/watch: https://linktr.ee/italian_renaissance_podcastGet additional content by becoming a Patron: patreon.com/TheItalianRenaissancePodcast Support the show

Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back behind the microphones for another episode of the Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football podcast. The Helium Boys return to break down the Trojans' thrilling come-from-behind, last-second 35-31 victory over Texas A&M in the Las Vegas Bowl and discuss the perpetual redesign of the Trojans' roster for the 2025 season. The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill' that features Shotgun discussing the epic finish to Kyle Ford's collegiate career before Chris uses his 'Two-Minute Drill' to focus primarily on his love affair with the Pop Tarts Bowl. That leads to a discussion about the Helium Boys traveling to cover or at least attend the 2025 Pop Tarts Bowl with Chris making the declaration that he will get a Pop Tarts Bowl tattoo in exchange for VIP access/treatment from the Pop Tarts Bowl. Chris and Shotgun then dive into their Stock Up/Stock Down segment looking at the players and themes that saw their stock rise or dip after the bowl game, starting with what positive developments happen before the team traveled to Las Vegas as Kamari Ramsey and Emmanuel Pregnon announced their returns to the team. Ja'Kobi Lane's wild string of six consecutive receptions going for touchdowns is included as are fellow receivers Makai Lemon and Ford. USC's young offensive line gets its kudos as well. On the flip side, Shotgun and Chris discuss another up-and-down performance by quarterback Jayden Maiava as well as the confidence of and surrounding Maiava. Then Shotgun goes on a rant about Lincoln Riley's Renaissance Man attempts that have led him to be mediocre in areas he previously thrived. Some younger players that didn't get opportunities in the bowl game and the chance in receiver rotations are also featured. A discussion about the NCAA transfer portal and the impact of both the losses and acquisitions the Trojans have made since the portal opened leads to some puzzled worries from the podcast collaborators. After a break, the podcast duo answer your mailbag questions discussing the transfer portal as well as USC's searches for a linebacker coach and general manager. There are also questions about offseason momentum, offensive creativity and involvement of the tight end position. The Helium Boys also react to suggestions for the podcast for 2025 before the episode concludes with Chris quizzing Shotgun with some Take It or Leave Its about the Trojans and an Overtime period focused on New Year's Eve traditions. Nathan Myhrvold likes to challenge conventional wisdom. When the founder and CEO of Intellectual Ventures (and former Chief Technology Officer at Microsoft) isn't running one of the world's leading invention businesses, he's busy doing norm-defying research on topics like dinosaur bone density, asteroid sizing, and the proper way to knead dough.
