"Savarkar was a great rationalist. The surprising thing is how such a rationalist went completely off the rails in regard to other matters. His writing is full of villains and among the villains are the Buddha, all Buddhists, whom he considered hereditary traitors, Ashoka, Akbar, Tipu Sultan, and then Gandhiji. On the question of Godse and Apte there was no doubt that they were his acolytes, they were his worshippers. Sardar Patel said the problem was that once you create an atmosphere then you don't have to tell anybody to go and assassinate; he reads your lips. You just have to see the publications Savarkar was patronizing... They were only penning hatred and it was all centered on one man -- Gandhiji. Savarkar felt that the Marathas were the real legatees of the Mughal empire and then the damn outsiders, the British, slyly took over. The same thing happens in his own life . He thinks he is the heir to Lokmanya Tilak and then this outsider Gujrati comes and takes the whole prize away. This great disappointment in his life gets centered on one man and becomes hatred. Today, Gandhiji is a great inconvenience because he embodies Hinduism, the collective memory of our people. If Savarkar's line is pursued, then India will become a dismembered nation like Pakistan; society will be riven by hate. This eternal search for purity always ends in that. The difference between Indic religions like Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism from Semitic religions is that ours is an inner-directed search. Everything - pilgrimages, idol worship, mantras etc. is to aid this inner search. When you marry it to the State, religion becomes an instrument of the State. You only have to look at the Jewish religion when Gaza is to be bombed - it just becomes an instrument. Secularism is a way of keeping the purity of religion. It's not anti-religion. Keep religion and the State separate. That is why my book ends with this appeal - Save Hinduism from Hindutva" - Arun Shourie, author, 'The New Icon; Savarkar and the Facts' talks to Manjula Narayan on the Books & Authors podcast.

Returning guest, Jonathon Sawyer is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Colorado Boulder. Working with the National Education Policy Center, Jon researches public and private education. Through his in-progress dissertation, Jon explores pressing tensions between the right to religious freedom and the separation of church and state, focusing on taxpayer-supported religious schools. Motivated by life-defining experiences in a school associated with the early years of the New Apostolic Reformation, Jon is particularly attentive to LGBTQ students who are subjected to religiously motivated discrimination. Through his work, Jon aims to educate his academic community and the public on the discrimination some LGBTQ youth may experience in taxpayer-supported religious schools. He also explores how religious extremism radicalizes youth against democracy. Jon has also presented research on civil rights, education policy, and religion at the annual conference of the American Educational Research Association. Jonathan shares alarming details about how billions of taxpayer dollars are flowing into religious schools that may be radicalizing youth against democratic values. He discusses the rhetoric of demons and exorcism practices that are prevalent in some charismatic and Pentecostal Christian communities. These practices not only harm the psychological well-being of individuals but also pose a threat to the democratic fabric of our society. Rachel and Jonathan explore the concept of "self-invisibility," a term Jonathan uses to describe individuals who, due to extreme religious indoctrination, become invisible to themselves. This phenomenon can lead to a perpetuation of discrimination and harm, as those who are indoctrinated may go on to discriminate against others. The episode also touches on the broader societal implications of religious extremism. Jonathan warns against the language used by some political and religious leaders, which can often be dismissed as hyperbole but has real-world consequences. He emphasizes the need for both thoughtful liberals and conservatives to recognize and address these issues. You're gonna need a hot shower with an abrasive loofah sponge after listening to this one. It's another wild ride with Hawk as he continues to delve into the twisted minds of far-right Christian nationalists hellbent on establishing a real-life Gilead (not the land of milk and honey one, rather the one where everyone is evil). First up is Russell Vaught, a "battle-tested bureaucrat" who wants to turn the presidency into an absolute dictatorship if Trump gets re-elected. With his "radical constitutionalism" agenda, Vaught dreams of mass deportations, criminalizing abortion nationwide, and unleashing the military on American soil to crush dissent. What a sweetheart. But wait, there's more! We also meet the Society for American Civic Renewal (SACR for short), a creepy men's club that wants to create a patriarchal Christian ethnostate. Their goals include expelling non-Christians, stripping LGBTQ rights, and reviving feudalism à la apartheid South Africa. And it's all run by a shampoo mogul calling himself the "Maximum Leader" from his poetically named "Howdy Doody Good Times Foundation." You can't make this stuff up! First a pillow guy and now a shampoo guy? What's next, the truck nuts guy?In the end, Hawk is left feeling spiritually polluted after diving down this unsettling rabbit hole of white Christian extremism. At least these wackos provide unintentional comic relief amidst their chilling authoritarianism and hate-filled bigotry. It's both hilarious and terrifying how these wealthy radicals are dead serious about their unhinged fantasies of religious ethnic cleansing. The intersection of politics and religion takes center stage, depicted as a dark comedy where civil rights and reason are overshadowed. The panel critiques legislators for prioritizing sensationalist agendas over addressing real issues, highlighting the absurdity of clickbait legislation. Step inside the twisted world of the Rajneeshpuram cult with our latest episode, where an enigmatic Indian guru's quest for utopia leads to a scandalous slice of Oregon's history. We spotlight the tumultuous rise and fall of the Rajneeshpuram commune, starting from their head-scratching financial prowess in acquiring a vast ranch, to their audacious attempts at sculpting a city of their own. Our conversation isn't just a history lesson; it's a deep dive into a community's struggle with an ambitious cult's explosive impact, where salad bars became vectors for bioterrorism, and small-town America clashed with an influx of red-clad devotees. As we thread through the intricate legal battles that the Rajneeshpuram faced, we dissect the blurred lines between church, state, and the ownership of sacred space. The narrative gets personal as the residents of Antelope, Oregon, stand their ground against the commune's expansion, making their town a symbol of the broader conflict. We don't shy away from the darker side either, revealing how a utopian dream distorted into a narrative of crime, eventually branding the group with terrorist undertones. Our exploration goes beyond the headlines, correcting historical inaccuracies and examining the legal repercussions for the commune's most prominent figures, like Ma Anand Sheela. In our final musings, we reflect on the Rajneesh legacy, pondering the transformation of their ranch and mulling over the philosophical echoes of Rajneesh's "ten commandments." Our hosts grapple with defining the group—cult, criminal organization, or a misunderstood community? We also step into the wider realm of cults and terrorist organizations, humorously comparing their evolution to stages of Pokémon, while engaging in rigorous debate about international law, extradition, and the enigmatic Edward Snowden. Join Resident Bible Scholar Erin Moon as she explores listener questions and deep-dives the history of the region through a religious lens to provide context for what you're hearing on the news and seeing in your feeds.  We understand that we bring a bias to this conversation, so we enlisted the help of several sensitivity listeners of various backgrounds to educate and enlighten about our own blindspots and biases. We're so thankful for their help in shaping this episode. “A cultural icon is a person or an artifact that is identified by members of a culture as representative of that culture. The process of identification is subjective, and "icons" are judged by the extent to which they can be seen as an authentic symbol of that culture. When individuals perceive a cultural icon, they relate it to their general perceptions of the cultural identity represented.[1] Cultural icons can also be identified as an authentic representation of the practices of one culture by another.[2]” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

“Pathological lying, also known as mythomania and pseudologia fantastica, is a chronic behavior in which the person habitually or compulsively lies.[1][2][3][4] Pathological liars often report that they do not know why they lie.[5][6][7][8][9] It was first described in the medical literature in 1890 by G. Stanley Hall and in 1891 by Anton Delbrück.[1][3][9] There is still much controversy in the fields of psychology and psychiatry about whether or not pathological lying is a unique disorder or merely a symptom of other disorders.[3][4] A widely agreed-upon description of or diagnostic criteria for pathological lying behaviour does not exist, resulting in controversy regarding what it truly means to be a pathological liar.[4][7][8] However, diagnostic criteria based on research and assessment data has recently been put forth, which maps onto the DSM.[10] Theories to explain the root causes include stress, an attempt to shift a locus of control to an internal one, and issues relating to low self-esteem.[8][6][7][9] Some have suggested a biopsychosocial-developmental model.[11] While some theories have discussed etiology and causes, the exact causes have yet to be determined.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

“Extremism is "the quality or state of being extreme" or "the advocacy of extreme measures or views".[1] The term is primarily used in a political or religious sense to refer to an ideology that is considered (by the speaker or by some implied shared social consensus) to be far outside the mainstream attitudes of society.[2] It can also be used in an economic context. The term may be used pejoratively by opposing groups, but is also used in academic and journalistic circles in a purely descriptive and non-condemning sense. Extremists' views are typically contrasted with those of moderates. In Western countries for example, in contemporary discourse on Islam or on Islamic political movements, the distinction between extremist and moderate Muslims is commonly stressed. Political agendas perceived as extremist often include those from the far-left politics or far-right politics, as well as radicalism, reactionism, chauvinism, fundamentalism, and fanaticism. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Portland journalist Leah Sottile’s book “When The Moon Turns To Blood” centers on the case of Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell. The couple was on trial in 2023, accused of killing two of Vallow’s children whose bodies were found in Daybell’s backyard. But the book is about much more than just true crime. Sottile digs into the couple’s apocalyptic beliefs and the history of the extremism that exists on the fringes of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormon church. We talked with Sottile in 2022 about what this case reveals about religious extremism in the American west. Lori Vallow was found guilty in May of 2023. Chad Daybell is set to stand trial in April 2024.

When your country is hijacked by real religious extremistsYou don't have to look very far these days to find those that would rather run the United States of America down rather than be grateful for all that she has to offer. Have you ever wondered though why so many choose to emigrate from their home countries around the globe to the United States if we are so oppressive? The numbers coming versus those leaving are quite lopsided, and for good reason. I'm not here to discount peoples' perceived grievances, but things become far more clear when you listen to those who've experience real oppression. Things become very different when your country is hijacked by real religious extremists.Who is Dr. Mahsa Hojat-Khoshniyat?Dr. Mahsa Hojat-Khoshniyat was born in Iran and had the pleasure of growing up with cultural values of empathy, humility, being humble, hardworking, and caring. As a part of her cultural values, from very early on, she learned the importance of human value, dignity and respect despite race, culture, circumstances, socioeconomic status, or education. Mahsa learned the value of perseverance, believing in oneself, standing for what is right, and not giving up even when it gets hard.Despite being raised with this incredible set of core values, Mahsa spent her early years living a duality of circumstances. The country in which she was born, and loved dearly, had been hijacked by religious extremists. Mahsa, as many do in the country of Iran, lived by one set of rules within the confines of her home and something totally different in public.Learn more about Dr. Mahsa Hojat-Khoshniyat by checking out the full show notes for this episode at DerateTheHate.com.What have you done today to make your life a better life? K Sera discusses the striking similarities between Nationalism and Religious Extremism. Micah argues over the differences and Phil flip flops.   Show Notes: -N/A   K Sera's after thoughts: - After listening to us ramble on, my thoughts on this haven't really changed. I still think of nationalism as an exclusionary love of country. Not just pride in one's country, but a belief that one's country is better than all others. Which is that same gross feeling I get from religious fanatics. They don't just love their god, their god is the best, most powerful, most amazing god and they are better and more right than anyone who believes differently. It's more than pride. It's exceptionalism. - I think it's harder for me to understand that as any kind of positive feeling. It is great to love something, and share the thing you love with others who are receptive. It's disrespectful verging on awful to intimate that others are shameful, inept or somehow less than because they don't share or participate in your beliefs... Or non beliefs. - Anyway… I am tired of people.   Phil's afterthoughts: -- In the Fall of 2022, we have seen political extremism, religious extremism, and extreme nationalism. Sometimes all combined. - I am hoping that for the most part, the vast majority of the people (99%) are normal, moderate, and reasonable folk that just want a better future for their family and that it is the small (and very vocal) group of fanatics (or extremists in any topic) that are yelling the loudest. - I say this because while some people are just going to be horrible human beings, I am really hoping that they do not represent who we truly are. That deep inside us, most people are just doing the best with what we have, and that we will help those in need (but we are afraid to because we do not want to be taken advantage of). That we are somehow tricked into believing that most of everyone are the loud and cruel extremists (but in reality many of us are just normal people, but now are concerned about "who is who"). - We often get our news and information outside of first principles. This is designed (we are overworked, overtired, and overdone) to ensure we do not challenge the status quo. The funny thing is, if we only had the energy to realize that most of us are also overworked, overtired, and overdone, we would realize how manipulated we all are. - Too Long; Didn't Read Version: We are too tired to realize we are all too tired. Only the extremists have been able to tap into rage and fear to gain energy. Yes, every kind of extremists are very similar in this regard (Nationalists fear their way of life is threatened, Religious Extremists fear that they will be punished in the afterlife). News Flash: we are all misled, not because we are stupid, but because we have no energy to fight back. Who are we fighting? Well isn't it obvious?
