Through his work with the Reformation Project, and his book God and the Gay Christian, Matthew Vines captures the essence of a journey shared by millions managing the complex intersection of faith and sexual identity. In a political climate where White Christian Nationalism increasingly scapegoats LGBTQ people for societal ills, Vines offers something revolutionary: a thoughtful framework for understanding Scripture that upholds its authority while making room for affirming theology. Through meticulous examination of historical context, he demonstrates how the same-sex behaviors condemned in Scripture were fundamentally different from the loving, committed relationships we recognize today.Drawing fascinating parallels to how Christians reinterpreted biblical teachings on slavery and charging interest, Vines shows how contextual understanding isn't compromising faith—it's deepening it. "The reason same-sex behaviors were condemned in Scripture are very different than the types of same-sex relationships we're talking about today," he explains. We discuss Pope Francis's legacy of inclusion and the challenges within evangelicalism, where reform seems simultaneously impossible and inevitable. Vines suggests that effective change comes not through flashy redesigns of church with pride flags everywhere, but through communities that fully include LGBTQ people while keeping "the main thing the main thing"—following Jesus.-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:BlueskyYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com Music: Majestic Earth - Joystock

And how did Protestant ideas of martyrdom, land ownership, and war shape the founding of our democracy? In this episode, Will and Josh sit down with Dr. John Fanestil, a United Methodist pastor, historian, and author of American Heresy, to explore the deep roots of white Christian nationalism in early English Protestant colonization. Fanestil traces how ideas about land, race, and theology became embedded in the American story—and how those ideas still echo today, particularly in the rhetoric of political leaders like Donald Trump. From George Washington's land grabs to Jefferson's complex faith, Fanestil offers a compelling look at how Protestant theology shaped America's founding myths—and how nationalism, racism, and religious triumphalism became bitter fruits of that legacy.

Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comIn recent years, white Christian nationalism has grown from a fringe ideology into a dominant force shaping American politics and religious identity. But what happens when Christianity is weaponized for power rather than justice? In this episode, political host Will Wright and pastor Josh Burtram sit down with Dr. Greg Garrett, Baylor University professor and prolific author, to unpack how white Christian nationalism is driving people—especially younger generations—away from the church.Drawing from decades of research, personal experience, and his work at Baptist News Global, Garrett explores the rise of anti-justice theology, the quantifiable damage to church membership, and how Christians can resist in a Christ-like way. He also reflects on the importance of listening to Black churches, learning from marginalized voices, and reclaiming a Gospel centered on love, humility, and service.Guest Bio:Dr. Greg Garrett is a professor of English at Baylor University and one of America's leading voices on faith, race, and social justice. He is the author of over 25 books, including recent works on James Baldwin and Christian nationalism. He is a regular contributor to Baptist News Global, where he interviews theologians, pastors, and activists shaping the future of the church.
This week we look at the second beast, or the beast of the land. John describes this beast as one that has the appearance of a lamb but the actions of the dragon. From the first century world to our American world, we will examine the rise of Christian Nationalism to see if there are any parallels.
In this episode, author Keith Giles explains why the Gospel of Judas is worth examining and how it teach us something about the Christian faith today. We'll look at what the author of the Gospel of Judas wanted to say and why they said it the way they did. Plus, a discussion about the Constantinian Church we have today and why we need another "Gospel of Judas" for White Christian Nationalism.

White Christian Nationalism is a movement of American Christians who are fighting for conservative Christians to hold power in family, religion, education, media, arts and entertainment, business, and government. Is this what Jesus taught in the gospels? How do we reconcile this movement with the teachings of Jesus? How do we respond when Christians use scripture to justify policies that harm and marginalize vulnerable communities?
On today's pre-recorded show, host Sara Gabler speaks with two journalists covering religion and American politics, Phoebe Petrovic and Sarah McCammon. The post Reckoning with White Christian Nationalism appeared first on WORT-FM 89.9.

In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Amy Cooter discuss the complexities and variations within militia groups in the United States, citing examples of constitutional militias, millenarian militias, and border militias noting their varying beliefs and tendencies. Dr. Cooter also highlights how the role of nostalgia and protecting the Second Amendment rights are integral in militias' self-perception. They discuss the difficulty in tracking militia activity, the racial undertones in these militia groups, as well as the legality and legal loopholes that many of these groups fall within. Key Takeaways: Not all militias are the same. They do not have the same goals, structure, meetings, life experiences, or beliefs. Border militias tend to be more concerned about migration, whereas others, who live away from the Southern border of the US, are less concerned about immigration. The Second Amendment and nostalgia are two major things that tie militia groups together with a point of commonality. A lot of militia members aren't very religious themselves, but we have to pay attention to the way that the mythologized story of our founding and who we are as a nation connects to certain Christian mythology in ways that are getting pulled forward with different iterations of what we're calling White Christian Nationalism. "Most militias really see their limits at their community or even their county boundary. They tend to have only very local members to set their own agenda, even if they do coordinate, sometimes for training or other activities, with other geographically near militias." — Dr. Amy Cooter Episode Reference: ProPublica Article: The Militia and the Mole by Joshua Kaplan: https://www.propublica.org/article/ap3-oath-keepers-militia-mole Connect with Dr. Amy Cooter: Professional Bio: middlebury.edu/institute/people/amy-cooter Website: https://www.amycooter.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/amy-cooter-67a9a242 Book: Nostalgia, Nationalism, and the US Militia Movement: https://www.amazon.com/Nostalgia-Nationalism-US-Militia-Movement/dp/1032421975 Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Episode 86. Several big international changes have occurred since the last episode was released on the 9th of January. America witnessed another peaceful transfer of power, though it was immediately followed by some executive orders that are anything but peaceful, and Israeli hostages were exchanged for Palestinian prisoners as part of a ceasefire. These small steps are part of much longer national journeys that will affect many people for years to come. Today's guest, Dan Miller––professor, co-host of the Straight White American Jesus podcast, and former evangelical pastor––has stepped out of his usual discussion of White Christian Nationalism in America to talk with me about his own personal faith journey. Over the years of observance and theological training, Dan has shifted from believer to critic, though he is back in a church community. You'll hear many reminders of why thinking deeply and critically is so valuable. Episode 85. As the new secular year begins, along with the incoming presidential administration, it's a good time to hear a shortened version of my conversation with the esteemed journalist and speaker Wajahat Ali. Given the dominance of White Christian Nationalism and the debate about immigration, Wajahat's Sunni Muslim American identity and his family's Pakistani immigrant history, make him an ideal partner to talk about religious pluralism in America today. In this conversation we explore the challenges minorities face as well as the fears, hate and discomfort that drive the antagonism and protectionism of White Supremacy. But our conversation is not completely dark. Wajahat raises reasons for hope and steps we can each take towards a brighter future of dignity and freedom. Highlights:· White Christian Nationalism.· Balancing group identity and assimilation; history and modernity; religion and secularism.· Suburban communities' fear despite material abundance.· Progressives ceded spirituality to the right.· Stand for dignity, freedom; reject hate-driven leadership.· Steps of awareness, intention, and action for individual contributions.Bio:Wajahat is a New York Times contributing op-ed writer and Daily Beast columnist, public speaker, and recovering attorney. He also regularly appears on cable news and radio to discuss politics, religion, foreign policy and culture. Wajahat often speaks on the multifaceted American experience, covering our growing need for cultural unity, racial diversity, and inclusion. Additionally, he has published his first book Go Back To Where You Came From: And, Other Helpful Recommendations on Becoming American. Wajahat grew up in the Bay Area, California to Pakistani immigrant parents. He graduated from UC Berkeley with an English major and became a licensed attorney. He knows what it feels like to be the token minority in the classroom and the darkest person in a boardroom. He is married and the father of three kids. Deep Dive is on vacation this week, so we are re-running our most listened to After America episode. We'll be back next week with an all new holiday episode of Deep Dive.----Can Christian nationalism coexist with American democracy, or is it a threat to the very foundation of our nation? This episode kicks off with an in-depth analysis of Mike Johnson's rise to Speaker of the House and how his Christian nationalist views are shaping the legislative landscape. We discuss the erosion of the separation of church and state, exploring how Johnson's leadership might be steering the country towards authoritarianism. We examine the historical intertwining of evangelicalism and conservative politics. From the televangelism boom driven by figures like Pat Robertson and James Dobson to the influential Moral Majority founded by Jerry Falwell, we trace the path that has aligned evangelical Christians with the Republican Party. We delve into the consequences of this alliance, from Reagan's judicial appointments to the overwhelming support for Donald Trump, illustrating how a desire for traditional values has paved the way for more authoritarian leadership. Finally, we discuss the rise of militant Christian nationalism and its alarming impact on American society. We dissect the process of online radicalization, the normalization of extremist rhetoric, and the unsettling intersection of Christianity and right-wing extremism. We also examine the broader implications, including mass deportations and the undermining of democratic institutions. Dr. Lauren Horn Griffin discusses White Christian Nationalism and so-called "Trad Catholic Men" With the current election in the rear-view mirror now, the pundits are now piecing together what worked for one candidate and didn't for the other. One element that played large in the campaign is the role of White Christian Nationalism. Here we interview Dr. Lauren Horn Griffin from Louisiana State University, who has been studying movements such as these for most of her academic career. Our conversation today focuses on both the role of so-called "Trad Catholic Men" play in our social/political landscape as well as how competing narratives can shape a nation. Dr. Griffin is the author of ‘Fabricating Founders in Early Modern England.' Lauren earned her Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara (2016). At LSU, she researches and teaches about religion, technology, media, and politics.
Matt Crawford speaks with preacher Jim Wallis about his book, The False White Gospel: Rejecting Christian Nationalism, Reclaiming True Faith, and Reclaiming Democracy. It is time says Jim Wallis, to call out genuine faith―specifically the “Christian” in White Christian Nationalism―inviting all who can be persuaded to reject and help dismantle a false gospel that propagates white supremacy and autocracy. We need–to raise up the faith of all of us, and help those who are oblivious, stuck, and captive to the ideology and idolatry of White Christian Nationalism that is leading us to such great danger. Wallis turns our attention to six iconic texts at the heart of what genuine biblical faith means and what Jesus, in the gospels, has called us to do. It is time to ask anew: do we believe these teachings or not? This book isn't only for Christians but for all faith traditions, and even those with no faith at all. When we see a civic promotion of fear, hate, and violence for the trajectory of our politics, we need a civic faith of love, healing, and hope to defeat it. And that must involve all of us–religious or not. Learning to practice a politics of neighbor love will be central to the future of democracy in America. And more than ever, the words of Jesus ring, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
We speak with secular political activist Sarah Levin about the evolving landscape for secular voters within the Democratic Party, the implications of interfaith coalitions, and the role of non-religious constituents in upcoming elections. We also explore Sarah's substantial activism, including her role as founder of Secular Strategies and her efforts to establish secular representation within the Democratic National Committee (DNC). She emphasizes the significant strides made since her last appearance, particularly the inclusion of non-religious voices in the DNC's interfaith efforts and the official endorsement of the principle of separation of church and state in the party's platform for the first time. Doug and Sarah also discuss the challenges that still exist, including the perception issues surrounding secular candidates among both voters and the party apparatus.Sarah reflects on the importance of building a political identity that resonates with both non-religious voters and religious individuals, stressing the necessity of intersectionality in politics. We also focus on voter engagement and the upcoming elections.A critical segment of the conversation addresses the complex U.S. relationship with Israel amidst the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Sarah articulates her belief that while the U.S. has historically provided unquestioned support to Israel, this is a moment for reevaluation—especially in light of the potential ramifications of a Trump administration, which promises more extreme measures than current policies. Finally we encourage listeners to actively participate in the political process, follow updates on secular candidates, and engage in conversations that amplify the non-religious voice. With Sarah Levin's groundwork laying the foundation for future progress, this episode serves as a clarion call to recognize both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for secular individuals in politics.Full Show Notes & LinksSend us a textSupport the showSubscribe to our free newsletterCheck out our MerchFind us on Twitter(for now) Find us on InstagramFind us on Counter SocialFind us on Mastadon

Angela is the author of “Red State Christians” and the forthcoming book “Disciples of White Jesus” where she writes about the growing phenomenon of White Christian Nationalism and its impact on a specific group of people: White men and boys. Throughout this conversation we begin to see how this extremist approach began, why it thrives and even how to navigate relationships with people in our lives who live according to those values. Andrew and Laura also discuss the term ‘gaslighting' and explain what it truly means–instead of how it's talked about on social media and in pop culture–as a way to help people better organize and name what happened to them.Join the Religious Trauma and the Elections Support Groups! Trump and the much of the far right have perverted traditional Christian values. In this episode Rick is joined by Jim Wallis, theologian and author of The False White Gospel, to discuss the rise of Christian nationalism in the U.S. Wallis explores how this movement has distorted Christianity for political power, particularly under Donald Trump, and the dangers it poses to American democracy. They discuss the history of white Christian nationalism, its contrast with the inclusive teachings of Jesus, and the importance of reclaiming faith from political agendas to refound democracy on true spiritual values. Pastor Jenna takes the stage this Sunday and talks through the difficult reality facing our current political and religious climate. She brings attention to the language and ideology of white christian nationalism and how it finds itself at odds with scripture and the way Jesus held power.
American Christianity appears in a state of disrepair, perhaps even imminent civil war. On the one hand, of course, we have the evangelical right who make up much of Trump's ideological base; on the other hand, there are progressive American theologians like Jim Wallis who argue that this Christian nationalist wing of the Republican party isn't quite kosher. In his new book, The False White Gospel, Wallis argues that it's time to call out genuine faith—specifically the “Christian” in White Christian Nationalism. These people, he says, are not only fake Christians, but their racism and cruelty represents an existential threat to American democracy. True faith, for Wallis, Georgetown University's inaugural holder of the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Chair in Faith and Justice, is loving one's neighbor rather than throwing them out of the country. Jim Wallis is Georgetown University's inaugural holder of the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Chair in Faith and Justice, and the Director of its new Center on Faith and Justice. He served on President Obama's first White House Advisory Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships, and is the author of multiple New York Times bestselling books, including God's Politics. In 2022 and 2023, Washingtonian magazine named Wallis one of the 500 most influential people shaping policy in DC.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. NOW A NEW YORK TIMES AND A USA TODAY BESTSELLER "Everyone who claims to be 'Christian' or else claims to be upset by 'Christianity' needs to read this book, especially politicians using people's supposed faith for their own ends." —Margaret E. Atwood "Jim Wallis calls the nation to grow up and he calls us all to fight the love battle to save the soul of America." —From the Foreword by Eddie S. Glaude, Jr. A major new work by the New York Times bestselling author, arguing that the answer to bad religion is true faith that will help refound democracy It is time says Jim Wallis, to call out genuine faith—specifically the “Christian” in White Christian Nationalism—inviting all who can be persuaded to reject and help dismantle a false gospel that propagates white supremacy and autocracy. And more than ever, the words of Jesus ring, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Join us Thursday's at 8EST for our Weekly Happy Hour Hangout! Enemies Domestic, Book Six in the Lark Chadwick Mystery series: On her first day as White House Press Secretary, Lark Chadwick is confronted on live television by a reporter with an agenda: “Are you, or are you not, planning to abort your unborn child?” His question puts Lark in the crosshairs of extremists on both sides of the highly fraught abortion issue. Ambivalent about becoming a single mother in the post-Roe era, and grieving the death of her boyfriend, Lark is now forced to make her abort-or-not-to-abort decision in a highly toxic, politicized, and polarized fishbowl. At stake: her sanity—and her life. In the political thriller Enemies Domestic, his most important and controversial book to date, former CNN editor John DeDakis dramatically and thoughtfully tackles the hot topics of abortion, QAnon, White Christian Nationalism, and mental illness at a time when America itself is teetering between democracy and authoritarianism.“The astonishing White House thriller Enemies Domestic rockets readers through the life-defining politics and crimes that will define all our lives for years to come. Author John DeDakis reveals that world with the authority and insight he learned and brought to us as a CNN journalist who's watched the thrilling moments he fictionalizes unfold in real life. Enemies Domestic is a vital contribution to the thriller literature of our times.” —James Grady, author of Six Days of the Condor and 2024's The Smoke in Our EyesSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Watching the footage of the January 6 insurrection, Professor Bradley Onishi wondered: If I hadn't left evangelicalism, would I have been there? Today's book is: Preparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism—and What Comes Next (Broadleaf Books, 2023), by Dr. Bradley Onishi, which unpacks recent U.S. history to show how the insurrection at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021 was not a blip or an aberration. It was the logical outcome of years of a White evangelical subculture's preparation for war. Religion scholar and former insider Bradley Onishi maps the origins of White Christian nationalism and traces its offshoots. Combining his own experiences in the youth groups and prayer meetings of the 1990s with an immersive look at the steady blending of White grievance politics with evangelicalism, Dr. Onishi crafts an engrossing account of the years-long campaign of White Christian nationalism that led to January 6. How did the rise of what Onishi calls the New Religious Right, between 1960 and 2015, give birth to violent White Christian nationalism during the Trump presidency and beyond? What propelled some of the most conservative religious communities in the country—communities of which Dr. Onishi was once a part—to ignite a cold civil war? Through chapters on White supremacy and segregationist theologies, conspiracy theories, the Christian-school movement, purity culture, and the right-wing media ecosystem, Professor Onishi pulls back the curtain on a subculture. Our guest is: Dr. Brad Onishi, who is a scholar of religion and cohost of the Straight White American Jesus podcast. His writing has been published in the New York Times, LA Review of Books, and Religion & Politics, among other outlets. He holds degrees from Azusa Pacific University, Oxford University, and L'institut catholique de Paris, and received his PhD from the University of California at Santa Barbara. The Christian nationalist "Project 2025" and the Ten Commandments are the focus of this week's show. We hear Dan Barker's song "We, The People," challenging the notion that we are "one nation, under God." Then sociologist and author Samuel L. Perry, author The Flag and the Cross: White Christian Nationalism and the Threat to American Democracy, describes the clear and present danger of mixing religion and government.
Do you embrace or loathe the term “Christian nationalism”? In this episode Alex sits down with David Schrock and Steve Wellum to tackle this hot-button issue through a missiological lens. They explore what the role of Christianity is in contributing to the public policy of a nation, how Christians should approach politics and taking a stand on Christian values, and if we are collectively misunderstanding what it means to be a so-called Christian nationalist. David Schrock is the Pastor of Preaching and Theology at Occoquan Bible Church (Woodbridge, Virginia). Adjunct Professor of Systematic Theology (Indianapolis Theological Seminary, Boyce College, and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Stephen Wellum is Editor of The Southern Baptist Journal of Theology and Professor of Christian Theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary where he has taught for 25 years. Together they serve at Christ Over All, a publishing company of pastors and theologians dedicated to helping the Church see Christ as Lord and everything else under his feet. Want to hear more? Donald Trump has enjoyed strong support from white Evangelical Christians since his first run for the presidency. But recently, he has made a specific brand of Christianity a centerpiece of his campaign. He repeatedly casts himself as a messiah figure, even comparing his legal troubles to the persecution of Christ. He regularly ends his rallies with prayer. And last week he started hocking a version of the Bible that also includes copies of the founding documents of the United States. “Trump is now wrapping his candidacy around this idea of White Christian Nationalism,” says Robert P. Jones, president and founder of the Public Religion Research Institute, or PRRI. He is also author of two books about the relationship between race and religion in the United States, “The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy,” as well as “White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity.” Jones joins Diane on this week's episode of On My Mind to talk about what's behind the attempts to build The Church of Trump, and why he sees it as a dangerous development for the country. To find out more about Robert P. Jones and read his latest, visit his blog, “White Too Long”: https://www.whitetoolong.net/.
Why do many Christian nationalists think Trump is chosen by God to lead the country? We talk with Bradley Onishi about the ties between Christian nationalism and political and judicial leaders. Onishi became a Christian nationalist and a youth minister in his teens and then left the church. In the fourth and final episode of “The Threat of White Christian Nationalism”, host Reed Galen is joined by investigative journalist and author Sarah Posner. They discuss the historical roots of the Christian right (including the opposition to desegregation and the rise of the prosperity gospel), what MAGA learns from Christian nationalism's spiritual warfare and charismatic worship practices, and what a possible Trump victory (or loss) would mean for the movement of white Christian nationalism. In the third episode of “The Threat of White Christian Nationalism”, host Reed Galen is joined by investigative journalist and author Katherine Stewart. They discuss how the white Christian nationalist movement is driven by a cohort of leaders and organizations that form a deep organizational network, how the attack on public education is part of a larger project to destroy democratic institutions, and what members of the pro-democracy movement can do to fight against the advancement of white Christian nationalism.
