Chiming of the HourPrelude Cantilena Richard Lloyd Rev. James Richardson, organistWelcome and Call to Worship Rev. John CallawayInvocation Rev. Katie Callaway Hymn 420 God of Grace and God of Glory cwm rhonddaOrdination and InstallationIntroductory StatementOrdination LitanyMinister: Brenda Helmly, Rebecca Sutton, Heather Valentine, and Rich Wheeler have been called to serve this congregation in deacon ministry. Having answered your call to serve, they have signified their willingness to be ordained to minister in this capacity.Congregation: We do, therefore, in the name and example of Jesus Christ, now proceed in the ordination, setting aside these four in service, leadership, and ministry.Minister: Ordinands, you have shown your willingness to assume the responsibilities of this office, and because the deacon ministry is of such vital importance to the life of our church, we pose these basic questions: Do you profess Jesus Christ as the Way and seek to minister with Christ as the Head of the Church, which is Christ’s Body?Ordinands: I do.Minister: Do you profess the Scriptures of the Bible to be the God-inspired sourcebook and guide for study, faith, and practice?Ordinands: I do.Minister: Do you promise, by word and by example, to promote the peace, the unity, and the work of this church and of the Church universal?Ordinands: I do.Laying on of HandsAnthem Here I Am, Lord Ovid YoungOrdination PrayerInstallation LitanyMinister: All serving in the Diaconate in the coming year please stand. Do you accept the office of deacon in this congregation, and promise faithfully and according to your ability to provide leadership of a servant of Christ?Diaconate: I do.Minister: All who are able please stand. Congregation, these are the persons whom you have called to be your servant leaders. What promise do you make to them?Congregation: We pledge to hold you and your ministry in this church in the highest esteem. We have taken seriously our choice of you. We desire that you lead us with courage, conviction, and compassion.Diaconate: We are honored and humbled by this display of your confidence in our capacity to be servants of this people. We pledge to you that we will bear that trust responsibly.Congregation: We charge you to give unselfishly to the wellbeing of our church. Be interpreters of our ministry to one another, to this community, and to the world. Be prophets calling us to the hard truths we sometimes would rather dismiss or forget. Be friends to us in times of crisis and change. Be pastoral to us in our joys and in our sorrows.Diaconate: With the care of our Creator, the strength of the Christ, and the presence of the Spirit, we will do our best.Gloria Patri No. 579 First Lesson Psalm 27:1, 4-9 Lynn Hadwin, lay readerSecond Lesson Matthew 4:12-23Homily Follow Me Rev. James Richardson, organistIntroit When Jesus Came to Jordan Frederik August MehrtensWelcome and Call to Worship Rev. Katie CallawayInvocation Hymn 281 Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah cwm rhonddaAffirmation of FaithWe thank God for the gift of creation called forth by the words, "Let there be…” Before the world had shape and form, God's Spirit moved over the waters. Out of the waters of the deep, God brought forth the earth to sustain all life.In the time of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, God's people Israel passed through the Red Sea waters from slavery to freedom and crossed the flowing Jordan to enter the promised land. In the fullness of time, God sent Jesus Christ who was nurtured in the water of Mary’s womb. Jesus was baptized by John in the water of the Jordan, became living water to a woman at the Samaritan well, washed the feet of the disciples, and sent them forth to baptize all nations by water and the Holy Spirit. It is this God in whom we find life, meaning, love, and affirmation. We place our faith and hope in God, the Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit, who uses water to renew and to give life to all of us, God's beloved children. Katie CallawayInvocation Rev. John Callaway*Affirmation of FaithThe Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.(Psalm 23 KJV)In MemoriamLinda BeachEleanor BloodNancy LewisJoe McNellageJoan UsherCongregational Response: We remember and give thanks.Silent PrayersUnison Statement of SupportWe thank God for the gift of life, for all of its wonder and mystery, its friendships and fellowships, and for the ties that bind us close to one another.
