The And Also With You podcast is a breath of fresh air for anyone seeking spiritual growth and theological development. Hosted by two women, along with their guests, this podcast provides insightful conversations and reflections on faith and life in the Church. As an active lay person in my parish, I have found immense value in listening to these discussions, which affirm and uplift my own beliefs. The work that the hosts are doing through their ministries and this podcast is truly a blessing, and I am grateful for the impact it has had on my own spiritual journey.
One of the best aspects of The And Also With You podcast is the deep authenticity and relatability brought forth by the hosts, Lizzie and Laura. Their love, care, and thoughtful words resonate with listeners regardless of their background or current relationship with the Church. Whether you are a clergy spouse, someone who has walked away from the church and returned, or even if you are searching for meaning outside of traditional religious structures, this show offers valuable insights that everyone can connect with. The reflections on liturgy have been particularly impactful for me during difficult seasons within the church.
While it's always important to approach any media content with discernment and critical thinking, there are no glaring negative aspects to point out in The And Also With You podcast. However, some listeners may find that certain episodes or topics do not align with their personal beliefs or perspectives. It's worth keeping in mind that this podcast represents the unique views of its hosts and guests, which may not necessarily resonate with everyone.
In conclusion, I highly recommend The And Also With You podcast for anyone seeking meaningful discussions on faith and spirituality within the context of the Church. Lizzie and Laura bring energy, humor, honesty, and genuine pursuit of God to their conversations. Whether you're deconstructing your faith, reconstructing it after a period of doubt or questioning, or simply enjoying your journey in faith without any specific labels, this podcast offers a wealth of insight and inspiration. I am eagerly looking forward to future episodes and the continued impact this podcast will have on my own spiritual growth.
The #1 question Lizzie has been asked on her book tour is some version of "how can I have joy when I feel so scared/sad/mad?" This is such a tender question, and one we - your three hosts today - have all wrestled with very, very deeply. As priests, but also just as people (who, to be clear, don't have this all hacked) we have not always been happy. Or grateful. But we have found ways to cultivate and nourish a spiritual discipline of joy, so we want to share the best practices we have found for nurturing joy in the face of everything that wants to steal our joy from us. +++Like what you hear? The Gospel of Luke says: "Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles." John claims it was Mary Magdalene. Mark and Matthew also have a list of women ... so whatever Gospel you're reading, the Good News of Christ's resurrection was first witnessed and preached by WOMEN. So who were these ladies?? And why is their story so often neglected? We cover a lot of territory here and would love to know what kind of follow up episodes you want to hear from all the subjects we touched on! We talk a lot about FEASTING in the Church, and specifically, that the season of Easter is a feast (as opposed to a fast). But what does that mean, exactly? Are we talking about real food or spiritual food or ... both?? Join us in Eastertide as we spend a little time with this question. The crucifixion was a grisly way for Jesus to die, and yet, his death is an enormous part of our faith. How do we talk about this with kids? Is it inherently shoving something down their throats? Will it traumatize them? What about kids who have been seriously traumatized already? How do we talk about death, torture, and grief with littles in such a way that teaches them the reality of the world, and the love of God, without shaming them or making them feel bad??With the wonderful Rev. Emily Garcia of "Good and Joyful Thing" we explore this question! We decided Holy Week was the perfect time to re-run one of our most popular, and most requested episodes EVER. Wait ... did you know "the rapture" is something that this dude named John Nelson Darby came up with in the 1800s after he fell off of his horse? And then it was popularized in the aftermath of WWI because of the study notes in the Schofield Bible? Yeah. "The rapture" and pre-millennial dispensationalism (the fancy term for it) is not traditional, ancient, or even Biblical theological thinking. Christians shouldn't fear the end times nor dread our loved ones being swept away from us while we await trials and tribulations here with Nicholas Cage. Rev. Lizzie's husband, Rev. Jonathan McManus-Dail, joins the crew as he is a literal rapture-unraveling expert. We'll debunk this theory and explore the texts used to support it to find a more liberated view of the end of days.+++Like what you hear? We are an entirely crowd-sourced, you-funded project. Recently, national news was made by an Episcopalian asking for mercy. Many of us were deeply moved by her words and yet, many people were enraged by them. This dissonance suggests that there are different understandings of mercy out there, especially among Christians. How do we begin to understand mercy in light of our faith? What does it mean to show mercy? What does God have to say about this? We are joined by Dr. Stephanie Mota Thurston to explore this question this week! Like what you hear? The idea of "sin" has been weaponized, especially against marginalized folks. We've brought our colleague, friend, and brilliant theologian The Rev. Dr. Patrick Cheng to speak with us on sin, and why we're not giving up on the idea of sin even as liberated Christians. Father Patrick is a prolific writer, thinker, and leader in the church; in this episode, we're talking especially about his book, From Sin to amazing Grace: Discovering the Queer Christ. What a weird and hard and scary time it is to be a queer person, and what a confusing time for both queer people and allies to understand alike to think through the relationship between the Christian faith and queerness, when so much is being said by Christians against queer and trans people. And yet, queer and trans and non-binary and gay and lesbian and bi Christians exist and more than arguments for our rights to exist, more than scriptural and theological underpinning for our legitimacy and our being made in the image of God, and certainly more than our flush assimilation into the structure and life of the church as it is and has been, gay and queer and trans people have unique and important faith and unique and important vocations within the church. We are joined by the Rev. Dr. Cameron Partridge in this week's discussion of queer ministry and vocation.Cover

Repentance and forgiveness are central themes of scripture, both Hebrew scriptures and the Gospel, and yet the work of reconciling conflict still feels at times: so confounding, so anaphylactic that you might think that we – as a culture, as a Church – have fudged our resumes. And yet, matters of conflict and repentance (or unrepentance) and forgiveness feel so prescient and urgent both for our ordinary lives in community and relationship, and for the health of our country, our world. What is forgiveness? How do you forgive? When do you forgive, and when do you withhold forgiveness? What if the other person is unrepentant? What if it's a series of repeat offenses? What if the conflict is within a community? What if the conflict is between factions, or political parties, or across an unassailable power dynamic? We are not going to solve this puzzle today but we're going to talk both big and small about this thing: forgiveness. In this episode we discuss a timeless topic but we are recording it in the context of the new year. It is early January, a time when people are typically thinking about their goals and intentions for the new year. Having habits, goals, etc. isn't inherently a bad thing! But it becomes tricky when we think we can somehow be “better” people. There is a prevalent thought within Christianity that our faith is supposed to make us better people. In the midst of a really big season in the life of the church (Christmas!) it's tempting to think, this is it! This is the best the church has got! And big grand occasions are special in the life of the church. But the church has so much to offer in addition to these big occasions. This week we reflect on how weird and good church can be in the little, every day moments. We have one of our very weird and good friends here to talk about this with us today, the Rev. Spencer Cantrell. And Also with You is hosted by two young women Episcopal priests, moms, and deconstructing Christians, The Rev. Laura Di Panfilo and The Rev. Lizzie McManus-Dail. Neither one of us grew up Episcopalian and yet both of us have found a home in this faith ... and we know how disorienting it can be for people who are new to liturgical Christianity or who have never known there was another, faith-full way to follow Christ. This week we are joined by a special guest who joins us to talk about an exciting new book! That's right, the Rev. Lizzie McManus-Dail is on today to share about her upcoming book "God Didn't Make Us to Hate Us!" Countless Christians are deconstructing the fear-based faith they were handed, but many don't want to give up on God—they want to love and be loved by Jesus without hateful or abusive theology. If you're one of these believers, this feminist, anti-racist, LGBTQ-affirming devotional will take you on a journey of spiritual reenchantment. Featuring 40 devotions on God's radical and liberating salvation, it's here to help you heal your church hurt, restore your sense of community, and embrace Jesus's heart-healing forgiveness. Move beyond rigid religion and reconnect with the undeniable truth that predates and will outlive all the toxic theology in the world: God made you to love you.Like what you hear? We'd love your support on Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/AndAlsoWithYouPodcastThere's all kinds of perks including un-aired live episodes, Zoom retreats, and mailbag episodes for our Patreons!Keep up with us on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/andalsowithyoupodcast/ More about Father Lizzie:PRE-ORDER HER BOOK: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/762683/god-didnt-make-us-to-hate-us-by-rev-lizzie-mcmanus-dail/ (if you like this episode in particular? This week, Laura and Ethan are joined by Dr. Toni Alimi for a conversation about The Tough Stuff in our scripture and tradition. From Augustine to @ladygaga to materialism to Jacob, we cover a lot of ground, all rooted in the essential question: how do we hold disparate and hard things in tension, especially when it's about our faith?Toni Alimi lives in Ithaca, NY, with his wife and their daughter. He teaches philosophy at Cornell University.Toni's latest book can be found here: Slaves of God: Augustine and Other Romans on Religion and Politics
The word of God is living and active, but what does this mean? How do we read scripture after it has been used as a tool for harm? When we stand in the rubble of our faith, how do we know what we can rebuild on? When we're ready to lay down our lament and anger at all we were disillusioned by (or maybe even when we're not) how do we take the next step? Let's get into what it means to reconstruct after deconstructing. Rev. Lizzie referenced this article: "Postcolonial Preaching in Intercultural Contexts" by Kwok Pui-lan for Episcopal Divinity School and Lessons in Belonging from a Church-Going Commitment Phobe by Erin Lane. Under nearly every video, photo, or post we make on the internet as two women clergy, there is at least one comment that says: "Paul has entered the chat." It's meant as a snarky condemnation of our work as women leaders in Christian faith, implying - as many believe - that St. Paul thought GOD thought women should never lead. Or speak. Or do anything interesting in church except maybe ...give money? Well, spoiler alert, as two women with six degrees and nine years of ordained ministry between us: we HAVE read the New Testament (a lot) and we are well aware what Paul says about women in ministry. And it's definitely not what the trolls seem to think. So we're here to bust open the myth and the cherry-picking of Scripture that wants to keep St. Paul and women clergy small and silent. Join us as we dive into 1 Timothy 2:11–15 and its contrast in Deacon Phoebe, whom we meet in Romans 16, and so many more texts that explore how much Paul actually worked with and empowered women clergy, and walk with us as we unravel some of the clobber texts that have been used to attempt to silence us. Because we've entered the chat, too. “Mom, does God love boys more than girls?” was the question Mariko's daughter asked her that led her on the path that produced The Book of Belonging, a storytelling Bible to help the next generation of kids understand the rich diversity of God's people, emphasizing identity, contemplation, and wonder. How do we approach the complexity of Scripture in a way that tells the truth of God to our children, and to ourselves? How can we emphasize stories that tell the breadth and depth of God's love for all people? We called in two experts - Rachel Eleanor and Mariko Clark - who are fresh off the printing press with their new book, a storytelling Bible called The Book of Belonging, to talk to us about these big questions and give us a behind-the-scenes peak of their creative process! Maybe "Biblical Womanhood" is the friends we made along the way. Lizzie and Laura dive into Proverbs 31 in this week's episode. Some Christians have interpreted this passage to be a literal picture of womanhood in a way that has been limiting and restrictive for women. A close reading of this passage reveals that it offers a picture of how EVERYONE should strive to live as followers of Christ, not just women. Parenting breaks us and build us up, and somewhere in the mess of gathering around toddler tables and in the unutterable losses, God is with us. Who is the Holy Spirit? How do we listen to Her in our lives? We are joined by (our!) spiritual director Annalise Hume in today's episode.
Many of us have been hurt by the institutional church and are left wondering what is the value of being part of a church. Can't we just worship God on our own? To help us answer this question we are joined by the Rev. Noah Evans to talk about how God works in and through the body of Christ, the church.
We are answering some of your questions this week! Thanks for listening and your support.
In Easter we read stories of the resurrected Christ - where Jesus walks and talks and eats with his disciples. They struggle to make sense of the resurrection and yet Jesus still meets them in their disbelief. In this episode we talk about resurrection and how all of us are invited to live into it with Christ's triumph over death. We are joined by Father Bo Reynolds for this wonderful discussion!
Every year on the Sunday after we celebrate Easter (so, technically, "Easter 2" since Easter is a SEASON that lasts for fifty days!) we hear the story of so-called "Doubting Thomas." It's a story often used to demean and demoralize our own doubts in the life of faith. But is that what Jesus does? (Spoiler alert: NO). Join us with fantastic guest The Rev. Ethan Lowery for this lively conversation! We have a Disney Original Crossover episode today ... with our pals from The Leader's Way Podcast! And we have just a teensy question: what is hope? Why do we have hope? What is the point of hope in Easter? Why do Christians have hope? Alleluia! The Lord is Risen! The Lord is Risen indeed, alleluia! The whole Christian faith and identity hinges on one moment, one powerful turn: God harrowing hell, Christ defeating death, and the resurrection. But why? What does Easter do for us and why do we celebrate it in this way? Next week is the biggest week in the Christian church year: HOLY WEEK! But ... what is it? And why do we observe these special services? Holy Week begins with Palm/Passion Sunday, and continues into what is called the "Triduum," or the three high holy moments of one long service that begins on Thursday and ends at the conclusion of the Easter Vigil. These include Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. We unpack what happens in these services and why they matter! One of THE BIGGEST questions we get is: "How do I teach my kids about my faith without coercing or traumatizing them?" Nowhere is that more worrisome for folks than when talking about Jesus' death by crucifixion. So whether you are a parent, grandparent, friend, or someone healing your own inner child (cough ... all of us ...) this episode is for you. We interview the brilliant friend and colleague, The Rev. Emily Garcia, whose work champions liturgies and resources for kids across the Episcopal Church. Find more of her work online here: https://www.agoodandjoyfulthing.org/about And connect with Rev. If you like this episode, read his books! And tell your friends!
