In this program, I continue my conversation with author Pamela Rice on the links between environmental damage and the production of meat. Here we focus on government supports for the production of meat, which keeps meat prices low, and on the effects of widespread commercial fishing.
The production of meat, whether from cows, pigs, chickens or other animals results in serious damage to our air, water and soil. Factory-farming traps millions of animals in what critics describe as a cruel and inhumane system. In this program, we take a look at some of the effects of a meat-based diet in a conversation with author and activist Pamela Rice.
Known for her stimulating and thought-provoking views, Pamela possesses a fervor for creatively giving a voice to victims who suffer in silence, afraid to speak for themselves. Inspired by everyday situations and social exchanges, Pamela has always enjoyed observing people and dissecting their interactions; this hobby became her muse. It is her desire to become a literary vessel that brings light to the social ill of domestic violence and its reach beyond all racial, cultural and socio-economic class. Through inspirational prose, she is destined to heal the human soul. To listen to Pamela's interview, please click here to listen in your browser. 21 December 2007 - In this Podcast Pamela recounts her particiption in Just Food's Summit on Food, Farms, and Community Health, which took place on December 1, 2007 at the New School in Manhattan, NYC. She recaps her own experience at the conference as well as that of Lisa Lindblom, a vegan animal advocate and friend. The sponsoring group, Just Food, with its sold-out audience, certainly advocates many important causes: organic agriculture, labor justice, local food, food security, agricultural sustainability and humane food. But it does not go out of its way to push for veganism or vegetarianism. Lisa and Pamela both had a big problem with this. You simply cannot have many of these good things without more people eating less meat or, better yet, adopting a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle.
23 July 2007 - Listen to Pamela Rice in her inaugural podcast as she describes the topics she will cover in the podcast.
Animal Diseases
3 September 2007 - With this Podcast, I focus on yet another spinach recall, this time Salmonella is the contaminant. Last year it was E. coli O157:H7. What's going on here? Suddenly, raw fruits and vegetables are one of the most likely food categories to be contaminated with pathogens? And why did produce producers ask to be regulated last year?
4 November 2007 - This Podcast is an on-the-spot account of a great outreach event with the VivaVegie Society. Pamela Rice, Hard News Vegan, and five compatriots set up a to-spec veal crate at Astor Place in New York City. Several activists took turns sitting inside it, making a particularly powerful image for passersby and passing cars. Activists held pro-veg'n signs, passed out information about the veal crate. And when they got a chance, they also distributed "101 Reasons Why I'm a Vegetarian." Several people are interviewed in this podcast. Later, the activists trade accounts of their experiences at the demo over a late lunch.

Recounts 2 days in the life of a vegan activist in New York City. She laments the priorities of society, and, in particular, the NYPD, at an Italian street fair. She lambastes today's young vegans who should be out there shoulder to shoulder with other vegan activists. Until we show the numbers, the meat eaters will walk all over us vegans, the planet, and the animals. Pamela Rice discusses food poisoning that is more and more affecting raw fruits and vegetables. She points a finger at industrial meat production, of course, but she also turns a jaundiced eye toward the industrialization of produce operations as well.
