Vegan Radio is a show about vegan culture; animal rights, healthy diet, food and lifestyle, and how they fit into the broader issues of environmentalism, spirituality, politics, and social justice. We bring an entertaining and sometimes humorous perspective to the subjects of diet, animal rights, arts, media, and personal ethics in a global world. Vegan Radio aims to be a show that omnivores will enjoy as much as vegetarians and vegans, to help raise these connected issues in a way that doesn't put people off. We often feature a musical guest.
Episode 106 contains four interviews focused around the subject of dating as a vegan. Recorded on Valentine's Day, Derek is without a co-host, and the show begins with his poetic monologue on finding love as a vegan. Derek recorded the first interview with Anne Dinshah at the 2012 Vegan Spirituality Retreat in Philadelphia. Anne is the daughter of American Vegan Society founders Jay and Freya Dinshah, and the author of Dating Vegans. The second interview is Ian MacDonald, a BBC-trained radio producer and author of The Vegan Option radio show and blog. He is hosting a kickstarter project to raise money to fund a 15-part audio series called Vegetarianism: The Story so Far - A Radio History. Ian gives us the low down on the vegan dating scene in London. We also honor the recent passing of Rynn Berry, who was a NYC based vegan historian. The third interview is with Ben Shaberman, the author of The Vegan Monologues. Ben has a new book that he is shopping around to publishers called Jerry's Vegan Women. The book features short fictional stories centered on relationships and influences that various women have on the protagonist. Ben narrates a portion of the book at the end of the podcast. The final interview is with Leigh-Chantelle, who runs Vivalavegan.net, a web site that provides easy-to-prepare recipes, blogs, articles, podcasts, interactive forum, informative and how-to videos, interviews with inspiring vegans, vegan mentoring e-books, print books and more. Leigh lives in Australia and provides us the female perspective on dating down under.
In this special episode Derek visits with former Vegan Radio co-host Megan Shackelford over the holidays to catch up on her fabulous vegan life and discuss the ways in which veganism and spirituality intersect. We then play a talk given by Will Tuttle, author of The World Peace Diet, at the 2012 Veg Curious event at the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary.
Derek & Lo Vee interview vegan authors Gretchen Primack and Dan and Annie Shannon at the 2013 Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary July Jamboree. Gretchen Primack is the author of Kind, a book of poetry that confronts animal issues artistically and metaphorically. She also co-authored The Lucky Ones, the story of Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary's co-founder Jenny Brown. Significantly, both of these interviews were conducted at the sanctuary's July Jamboree, an annual fund raising event. The Shannons have brought Betty Crocker into the age of compassion with their cookbook Betty Goes Vegan. They live in Brooklyn and write a kick-ass food blog on their Meet the Shannons website. What will the Shannons do next? Find out here, dear listeners.
Sid Garza-Hillman with his bare feet on the groundThrough the magic of technology Derek and Lo Vee interview California-based author/musician/nutritionist Sid Garza-Hillman. Sid is a man with a cowboy hat so large he needs two last names. His book "Approaching the Natural: A Health Manifesto" is a well written, pocket sized guide to living a more natural life and the connection to eating clean and healthy. Episode 102 features Derek's interview with PETA President and Co-Founder Ingrid Newkirk after her Naked Truth event here in NYC. Her work over the decades has saved millions of lives with education, activism, and media stunts. You can hear her talk about the most recent campaign Never Be Silent which explains that it is our duty as compassionate humans to speak for those whose voices are ignored and misunderstood. Ingrid offers up tales of animal intelligence and use of language and questions our quest for intelligent life in the cosmos when we haven't truly attempted to communicate with intelligent beings on our own planet. We also cover PETA's controversial stance on euthanasia.
Derek & Lo Vee interview animal rights photographer Jo-Anne McArthur, who is known for her project We Animals in which she documents, through photography, animals in the human environment who are being used for food, clothing, research, experimentation, work, entertainment, slavery and companionship. Her photos give us a view into their world that is often shocking not because she attempts to show horrific scenes of violence, but rather because she shows the day to day existense of the beings we share the world with. The photos are artistic and taken from perspectives that betray our typical human-centric and speciest gaze. The We Animals project has opened up new opportunities for Jo-Anne, and she is currently the subject of a documentary film by Liz Marshall called The Ghosts in Our Machine. "The film follows Jo-Anne over the course of a year as she photographs several animal stories in parts of Canada, the U.S. and in Europe. Each story is a window into global animal industries: Food, Fashion, Entertainment and Research."
On March 2nd and 3rd thousands of NYC Vegetarians, Vegans, and the Veg-curious came out to the NYC Vegetarian Food Festivalto sample, purchase, and learn about vegan food and lifestyle. Add in some animal rights organizations and farmed animal sanctuaries, the NYC Veg Food Fest is sure to be a hot spot for our favorite vegan super stars (every vegan is a super star to us)! That means, that in this spectacular 100th episode of Vegan Radio we hit the mother-load on interviews!!First we hear the story behind the festival from co-creator/coordinator Nira Poliwoda followed by Eddie Garza of Mercy for Animals, the benefactors of the festival's official after party. Ellen Jaffe Jones author of How to Eat Vegan on $4 a Day and Victoria Moran author of Main Street Vegan were kind enough to share their light with Vegan Radio and tell us what they are up to and how they are spreading the vegan experience to others. Next Rachel Kay and Marina Guvenc tell us about their newly launched vegan fashion blog The New Luv. Then Derek Goodwin shares magic moments with the ever regal Ella Nemcova of The Regal Vegan. Direct action is so dreamy.
We got 99 shows and this is one. Lo Vee and Derek check out the 2012 NYC Farm Sanctuary Walk For Farm Animals. Over 700 New Yorkers showed up to show support and raised over $70,000 for Farm Sanctuary. We feature interviews with sanctuary co-founder Gene Baur & host of CNN's Issues With Jane Velez-Mitchell (you guessed it...) Jane Velez-Mitchell! We also feature the talks that each of these inspiring vegan activists gave.Derek was also lucky enough to catch up with Katie Pryor - event organizer and Vegan Outreach coordinator for NYC - for a nice wrap-up interview. Derek was also event photographer and yoga teacher, while Lo Vee donned a cute fuzzy pink pig costume and worked the Blossom Du Jour table. All in all a splendid afternoon that led to a most excellent podcast, if we may say so ourselves.
In episode 98 we bust out our new Vegan Time Machine, to visit three interviews from past Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuaryevents, never heard before. First we check out Crazy Sexy Cancer "thriver" Kris Carr at the 2011 WFAS Thanksliving. Next we jump back a few more months and catch up with Terry Hope Romero at the 2011 WFAS July Jamboree. Terry became famous in the vegan world (and beyond) when she teamed up with Isa Chandra Moskowitz to create the public access television show Post Punk Kitchen and eventually collaborating on classic vegan cookbooks including Veganomicon: The Ultimate Vegan Cookbook and Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. More recently she has celebrated her Latin heritage with the cookbook Viva Vegan! 200 Authentic and Fabulous Recipes for Latin Food Lovers and her website Vegan Latina. For the third interview we jump way back in time to the 2009 WFAS June Jamboree where Isa Chandra Moskowitz herself is busy preparing food and signing books. She is so busy that we interview her mom Maureen Stewart instead of Isa, and get some inside scoop never before heard in the vegan movement. Find out who gave birth to veganism!
Vegan Radio is back for reals. Derek has moved to NYC and recruited vegan activist / singer / songwriter Lo Vee as his new co-host. Together they play a revamped version of the Vegan Radio Theme Song (originally by Beloved Binge) to kick off a reinvigorated show based around their recent visit to the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary for their annual July Jamboree.Vegan artist Sue Coe was visiting the farm and took some time to give an excellent interview, speaking her mind about the animal rights vs. welfarism debate, and telling stories of animal rescues and escapes. She has a new book out called Cruel that is a sequel to her eye-opening book Dead Meat, in which she visited slaughterhouses and then made paintings of what she had seen. The second interview is with the extraordinairy Jenny Brown - co-founder of Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, and author of the soon-to-be-released book The Lucky Ones: My Passionate Fight for Farm Animals. Jenny talks about the Jamboree, the farm, the book, the cows, the birds and the pigs. Also in this episode - songs from "DG & Lo Vee" - the live performance that Derek and Lo Vee gave at the Jamboree. Lo Vee has a voice like a sweet nectar, and her performance of "Bun's Song" about her unrequited love for her rabbit is moving and gorgeous. Derek closes the show with an electrifying re-writing of the CSNY version of Joni Mitchell's song "Woodstock".
Featuring interviews conducted at the New York Capital Region Vegetarian Expo on October 1, 2011. The featured interview is with Melanie Joy, author of Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs and Wear Cows. Melanie talks about carnism, the word she coined to describe the invisible system we are born into that supports the eating of animals. She also discusses idioms, activism, happy meat and abolition. An illuminating interview for sure! Also featured are interviews with Jill & Tracey from Compassion Couture, a vegan high fashion shop, and Samantha & her son Noah from Emmy's Organics, an Ithaca-based business making yummy vegan foods. Derek also interviews Jeff and Lisa, proprietors of the Red Robin Song Guest House in New Lebanon, NY (in the Berkshires on the NY/MA border). Having met Lisa at the expo, Derek went to the vegan B&B to get a true flavor of the place, and meet the goats and chickens who live at the sanctuary that is part of the operation. Finally we debut two new songs. In Big Ole Vegan Mountains Derek has written new lyrics to the classic song 'Big Rock Candy Mountains' to describe a vegan paradise rather than a hobo one. At the end of the podcast we offer a jam improvisation by Derek (ukulele/vocals), Vee Hadad (guitar/vocals), and Christopher Phillips (cello). The song is Crazy Vegan, and for a song that was being written as it was played and recorded it is very entertaining. Hopefully it will be shortened and made more radio-friendly in the near future!
Gene Baur & Susie Coston at Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, NYEpisode 95 features an interview with Farm Sanctuary co-founder Gene Baur and animal caretaker Susie Coston. Farm Sanctuary is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, and Gene & Susie share some of their thoughts and insights, as well as stories of animals. His new book "Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness" is doing great and he tells us all about it. He also talks about his work with Vega, the vegan company that provides all-natural health and performance products for athletes and people who need a natural energy boost.Derek also took some great photos of Robert Cheeke flexing his vegan guns in downtown New Orleans, and during his participation in Peta's Lovefest demonstration. Check them out on flickr. The music featured on the show includes Derek playing harmonium and singing Yoga Sutra 1:33, Undersea Poem playing "Nuvens", The Pleasants playing "Streets of Darkness" & "Wounded Man", and Beloved Binge playing the "Vegan Radio Theme Song".
This is destined to be a Vegan Radio classic. Derek threads the story of his move to New Orleans through interviews with his yoga teachers and recordings of the Kirtan chanting featured at the beginning of the classes. Derek has been studying Jivamukti Yoga which was founded by vegans Sharon Gannon and David Life and taught at the Swan River studios in New Orleans. The featured interview is with Libby Bryan, a vegan instructor at the school, who offers insight into the connections between veganism and yoga and the Sanskrit word Ahimsa, that means "to do no harm". Much of the featured Kirtan is centered around the chant "Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu", which translates to "May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all." From Derek's personal journey to the universal wisdom of yoga and compassion, this podcast captures something transcendent and beautiful, and perhaps often overlooked in the modern struggle for the liberation of animals.
Derek continues producing the show from New Orleans. This show centers around the 2nd annual NOLA Veggiefest, the Big Easy's vegetarian festival coming up on May 16th. Derek interviews one of the event's organizers, Jehan Strouse, who talks about the speakers, sponsors, organizations and entertainers that will be on hand. We feature music from Sweet Jones, who will be playing at the fest. In the second part of the show Derek is interviewed on WBOK New Orleans by Chad Smith and Darlene Carter on their show E-Talk. Derek talks about veganism, urban farming, being vegan in New Orleans, The Vegan Bus, and the Veggiefest.
Derek has moved to New Orleans and this is the first podcast produced in the Big Easy. Soon after his arrival the controversial animal rights/welfare organization Peta held a Meat Tray Demonstration in downtown New Orleans. Derek went to interview the activists involved in the protest, where naked protesters were covered in faux blood and lying in containers that looked like styrofoam meat trays, wrapped in cellophane and labeled with stickers that read 'human meat'. In the second half of the show Derek interviews Peta activists on the way to a Peta protest against NASA radiation experiments on squirrel monkeys. Derek raises the abolitionist argument and gets the activists perspective on Peta's tactics.

Show 87 was recorded on November 5th of 2009. Our feature interview is with Michael Balducci of The Veggie Brothers. We originally met at the Veggie Pride Parade. The Veggie Brothers mails delicious vegan meals made by an award-winning vegan chef all over the US and Canada, packaged in frozen vacuum-sealed bags that you can boil and serve. Michael came to veganism due to health issues and after healing himself decided he wanted to help others. His one caveat with veganism was with the bland vegan foods he was eating at the time and he wanted to ensure that vegans could eat food that was delicious. His future business partner was working as a chef at a vegan restaurant in Long Island where Michael discovered him and they founded the company soon afterward. The Veggie Bothers claim to have fooled guests at an Italian wedding with their vegan meatballs and a Jewish Grandmother with their vegan chicken noodle soup. Scott brings in da news, brings in da funk, including Al Gore giving vegetarianism some props, a cop getting off after getting it on with a cow, a slaughterhouse getting shut down, vegan lunch at Windsor Castle, and why diet soda sucks.
Scott is late so Derek and Megan kick off the show without him. The show was broadcast concurrent to the media frenzy over Natalie Portman going vegan after reading Jonathan Saffron Foer's soon-to-be bestselling book Eating Animals, so there is some speculation about the book. Scott enters the show in time to relate the latest news stories, including a vegetarian spider, Iceland plans for whalemeat trade, eating fish increasing risk for diabetes, and the possibility of eating meat causing sickness, paralysis and death. Our featured interview is with Jolia Allen, editor of Vegetarian Times. Derek probes into the magazine's ovo-lacto ways, Scott asks questions about the place for print media in an Internet age, and Megan delves into issues of food. Jolia is vegan and handles the crew well, avoiding Derek's attempts to stir up controversy while talking about current issues at the 35 year old magazine. When the conversation turns to Alicia Silverstone's new book The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet Derek gets to tell the story of his brief phone conversation the celebrity. The show wraps up with promises of a Gluten Free Future.
Our 85th show features an interview with Karen Davis of United Poultry Concerns. Karen is an expert on everything having to do with chickens, turkeys and other birds that people eat. Karen gives us some insight into birds and the agribusiness that treats them like garbage. Scott updates us with news about Diabetes, sleep and brain power, and the latest meat recalls and mishaps.

Show 83 features an interview with Eric Prescott, a Boston-based animal rights activist who is working on a variety of interesting projects, including a kiosk named OVED, a documentary series on Youtube called "I'm Vegan", the Boston Vegan Association, and his blog An Animal Friendly Life. Our guest host is Meredith Madyda. In the news we cover Peta's 'Save The Whales' billboard, mad cow disease in the human blood supply, and yet another meat recall.
