The government is unlikely to be able to cope with a severe outbreak of animal disease like Foot and Mouth, according to the National Audit Office. In a new report, it says key public bodies including the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Animal and Plant Health Agency, have been working so hard to manage outbreaks of diseases like avian flu over the last six years, that long term resilience is being undermined and there is no long-term strategy. The artificial fertilisers that farmers put on their crops are generally produced using the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch method. The process has a large carbon footprint, but we find out about research to find a biological alternative to chemical fertiliser. And we meet cattle foot trimmer, Dave Phillips from Dorset, who will be representing England at this year's World Foot Trimming Cup!Presented by Anna Hill Produced by Heather Simons

A couple of months ago, a killer started mobilising off the South Australian shore — one that would wipe out marine life, make surfers feel sick, and smother picturesque beaches in thick foam. The culprit? A bloom of tiny organisms called microalgae. We can't see them with the naked eye, but in big enough numbers, they can devastate ecosystems. So what made the South Australian algal bloom so lethal, and can anything be done about blooms like it?

Dr. Jingchun Li is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado Boulder, and she is the Curator of Invertebrates at CU Boulder's Museum of Natural History. She is also a Packard Foundation Fellow and a National Geographic Explorer. Jingchun studies how different species interact with each other and how that has influenced their evolution. Her work focuses mostly on mollusks like clams, scallops, cockles, snails, octopus, and squid. For example, she has recently been examining giant clams that use symbiotic algae to become photosynthetic. As a museum curator, Jingchuin manages the museum's collection of nearly one million invertebrates. She is responsible for developing the collection, good stewardship, documenting relevant details about each specimen, and making specimens available to scientists and the public. Some of Jingchun's hobbies include rock climbing at a local gym with her lab members, spending time with her kids, watching musicals, reading, and playing board games like Setters of Catan. Jingchun completed her B.S. in Biological Sciences at Capital Normal University in China and was awarded her PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Michigan. Next, Jingchun conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard University with support from an NSF Ocean Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. We are back this week (a little late, forgive me) with an episode on some aquatic overgrowths that can just ruin a vacation...or seafood. In all seriousness, such bloom of these particular algae or cyanobacteria may lead to fish kills, the deaths of aquatic mammals and other wildlife, and the contamination of shellfish and seafood which causes illness in those eating them (birds, and yes, even us). Severe red tides have caused respiratory illnesses in some just being near the source and there are some algae species out there that are destructive to entire ecosystems. Along with being deadly to wildlife (and sometimes humans), these blooms cost various industries, including seafood and tourist industries, millions of dollars. So I want to introduce to you some of the worst of the offenders that honestly start off innocent enough until they start overgrowing and produce toxins that can cause everything from GI issues to neurological syptoms, paralysis, and death due to respiratory failure. While these toxins directly affect the wildlife where they grow (this includes depleting the oxygen of the environment as well as poisoning it), it can harm predators and humans as they ingest shellfish or seafood in general. Shellfish poisoning may not sound like more than simple food poisoning (which itself is not always simple) but we are discussing a few different kind here including neurotoxic and paralytic shellfish poisoning among others. Also, I would be wrong not to include cyanobacteria in this episode, because, while it is not algae itself, it does compare in how it blooms, produces toxins, and affects entire ecosystems. In this interview, the Water Colors Team chats with special guest Dr. Jordyn Stoll, an accomplished aquatic ecologist with an expertise in algae! Jordyn’s formal interest in aquatic ecology began during her undergraduate work at Cleveland State University, where she helped with research using diatom fossils to understand changes in lake conditions over time. From there, she pursued a PhD at Kent State University, where she studied the effects of various nutrients on algae in the Great Lakes, Lake Victoria in Kenya, and the Cuyahoga River, specifically aimed at better understanding harmful algal blooms. Now as an aquatic ecologist with her own business, she hopes to continue researching and preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species such as Didymosphenia geminata, while also working to improve freshwater habitat through restoration efforts. We are honored to have Jordyn on the show to share her expertise! Leveling Up: Creating Everything From Nothing with Natalie Jill
Could the answer to women's health be found in a microscopic superfood well known in Asia? When Catharine Arnston's sister received a breast cancer diagnosis in 2008, neither could have predicted it would launch Catharine into a 15-year deep dive into what might be the most overlooked superfood on the planet: algae. What began as research into alkaline diets evolved into a mission to transform how we approach women's health, especially during the challenging perimenopause and menopause transitions. In this information-packed conversation, you'll discover the "double hit" women face during menopause, and why your mitochondria are literally "the lights in your building" that start dimming with age. Catharine reveals the critical enzyme (SOD) that protects your mitochondria but dramatically declines after age 30, how spirulina contains the highest concentration of this enzyme in the world, why the blue pigment in spirulina (phycocyanin) has scientists excited about its cancer-fighting potential, and why popular "green powders" and many algae supplements fail to deliver the promised benefits. We also explore the benefits of chlorella for detoxification and overall wellness and how incorporating algae into our daily routine plays a critical role in maintaining our cellular health. Listen to discover why Catharine believes "it's never too late to feel good" and how this microscopic superfood might just be the missing piece in your wellness puzzle. Microalgae are tiny organisms that convert energy from sunlight into fuel. The arctic ecosystem depends on them. In springtime, the algae bloom brilliant shades of green and draw tiny crustaceans, fish, birds and more to arctic waters. But what happens in wintertime, when the sun goes down and darkness reins for months? In the depths of the polar night, biogeochemist Clara Hoppe has found evidence that some microalgae are still ready to photosynthesize. Today on the show: how tiny microalgae limbo for their lives and come out more powerful than scientists ever imagined.
