Imagine being on the inside of an industry veiled in secrecy, deceit, and suffering. An industry that most people would be horrified to learn the truth of, yet even when they uncover the atrocities, many choose to ignore the reality of what goes on within the dairy industry. One person who could no longer deny the truth of the dairy industry is former dairy farmer, Jackie Norman. With her identity tied to an industry she could no longer be a part of, Jackie began a deep soul searching journey that not only took her to places she never imagined, as fate would have it, she met the love of her life, Gareth Scurr. A highly accomplished and acclaimed photographer, filmmaker and artist, Gareth supported Jackie's decision to commit to the vegan lifestyle, but swore it would never be his personal choice. He loved the taste of meat far too much to ever imagine a life without it… until he learned the horrid truth about the pain and suffering millions of animals are unnecessarily subjected to. In this episode of the Health Science Podcast, Dr. Frank Sabatino discusses what really goes on in the dairy and meat industries with Jackie and Gareth from an insider's perspective. Jackie shares her health challenges, the times she had to hide out from those who didn't want her revealing what she knew about the dairy industry and how Gareth put his gift as a photographer and filmmaker as the foundation of the visual media for the nonprofit, Vegan FTA. Gareth reveals how eliminating meat and dairy from his diet had an added benefit of extreme weight loss. Together, Jackie and Gareth are making a huge impact on the movement. http://www.healthscience.org/015-vegan-fta
Shakespeare said "A rose by any other word would smell as sweet", but how much weight does a name really hold? Last month, the Vegan Society marked World Vegan Month by investigating consumer attitudes towards ‘plant-based' and 'vegan' terminology, and why those attitudes were held. This week, Will Appelbe and Courtney White discuss their reckons on the matter, and what impacts using these terms might have for the vegan movement. They also discuss the news that 90% of Brits accept farmed animals really aren't all that different from companion animals, and yet another interesting development in the Greyhound Racing Industry saga.

If you think that veganism only applies to food, then this podcast episode will open a whole new side of the plant-based lifestyle to you. We’ve known for a long time that fashion can be bad for both animals and the environment, but more than recycling fashion items or even avoiding fast fashion, one entrepreneur has changed the animal-free-fashion game by creating a whole fashion brand catered to men. Joshua Katcher educates us on the relationship of masculinity, meat, animals, and fashion. Joshua’s portfolio includes being a production media practitioner, entrepreneur, author, designer, activist, artist, and educator. Not only that, he’s the founder and co-founder of two other successful businesses in other industries, all plant-based. How he fits everything he has to do in a day is nothing short of amazing. We’ll learn more about Brave GentleMan, which offers a full line of high-quality luxury vegan and sustainable shoes for men. His business started – not from head to toe – but toe to head. How does one start a shoe business, let alone a vegan one? Joshua gives us a glimpse of what he did to turn his vision into sales. He also tells us about the challenges he encountered and the lessons he learned the hard way so that you can avoid making them. We’re excited to show you this increasingly popular side of plant-based entrepreneurship. For those who are on the edge of dabbing into vegan business concepts that go beyond food into other industries, take a lesson from Joshua Katcher and Brave GentleMan.

Today I'm joined by Danny Ishay or @lifting_vegan_logic on Instagram. Danny is a college undergrad currently studying human communications, and the reason he actually took on this major is because he wanted to become a better animal rights activist. If you've seen him on Instagram, he's pretty known for his "change my mind" signs, where he usually has some type of controversial title about veganism with "change my mind" under it, so he's pretty active in terms of activism, which we get into a lot in this podcast. I have yet to really interview an activist, so this made for a very interesting talk. As far as other stuff we talk about in this podcast, we go from talking about his background in college, to why he decided to transition to veganism and his current fitness regime, because not only is he a vegan activist, but he is also a vegan bodybuilder. We also go over why he believes roadkill is vegan, why he smokes weed almost every night, and a lot more. This week is the Australian born animal rights activist Joey Carbstrong. Joey and I discussed in great detail his life as a gang member, the moment he turned his life around. We also touched on topics such as the use of words like "murder, rape and Holocaust' when used in the context of animals and much more. Despite Joey's background, he says his style of activism is non-confrontational and places an emphasis on being polite and respectful. The campaigner feels strongly about what he sees as the responsibility of all vegans to be active participants in furthering the movement. “When you become a vegan, you're realising you've been causing harm to innocent beings and you've tried your best as far as practical to stop causing harm. But that is a neutral position; it doesn't mean you're doing something fantastic, it just means you've stopped doing something horrific or contributing to something that's horrific. Edited by Ciaran Austin - Follow @ciaranaustin --- In this episode I got up close and personal with the vegan muscle powerhouse Mr Fraser Bayley. We discussed his young, mental health, having a baby and the state of the planet, as well as the evolving Alpha Male. We touched on our favorite metaphor 'The Matrix' as a way to explain our awakening in to the world and coming to the painful realisation that a lot of what we are taught as children especially about animals and health is incorrect and misleading. And that with every action we take we have the power to alter our future.
