When you're trying to get started in music there is a tendency to find yourself doing all sorts of stuff just for the privilege of being involved. One of the first things I ever did was conduct an extremely poorly-researched interview with an up-n-coming DJ and producer who was making tunes every dark garage DJ wanted (it wasn't quite called Grime yet). He called himself Plasticman. A few years and one letter from Richie Hawtin later, Chris Reed aka https://plastician.bandcamp.com/ (Plastician) was spinning on Radio 1, and shortly after that became one of the busiest DJs of the Dubstep explosion of 2006. Fast-fwd another fifteen years and he is still DJing, making tunes, and running his label https://soundcloud.com/terrorhythm (Terrorhythm), while also heavily involved in the https://www.fwb.help/ (Friends With Benefits) DAO, and a firm advocate of the web3 space as a whole. As the above would indicate we discuss a wide range of topics, including the end of UKG as we knew it in 2000, what exactly a DAO is anyway, and the legendary https://www.instagram.com/djhatcha/?hl=en (DJ Hatcha). We also get pretty deep into the challenges of making a living out of music over the course of multiple decades, and the many different opportunities that present themselves along the way. Chris is a true soldier of the UK underground and you will enjoy this conversation! On https://hotflush.bandcamp.com/ (Hotflush) this week the 'Iceberg' EP from https://bakongo.bandcamp.com/ (Bakongo) drops, featuring the 'Over Again' collab with *me* which first dropped a few weeks ago. KVM MAG PLAYGROUND presents an exclusive interview with BENGA Presenter: Nick Russell Age 14 the afro-haired producer went to his first club, Forward>> at London’s now defunct Velvet Rooms, the night widely acknowledged for founding the bassy UK garage hybrid, dubstep. Imagine the first club you ever get into is, as you step inside, in the process of changing the face of urban music? Imagine you’re only 14 at the time, yet you’re already a producer. Well, Croydon dubstep star Benga doesn’t have to imagine: that is his life. Having put in years of graft, Benga, now age 24, is a leading light in the rising global dubstep movement alongside his childhood friend, Skream. This year he drops his debut album proper for Tempa, provisionally entitled “Diary of an Afro Warrior,” after the mighty mane that sprouts from his head. “If I cut my afro off, I’d have to start again musically,” laughs Benga. Aside from the best haircut in dubstep, Benga has a lot to be happy about. At 15 he released his debut 12” “Skank/Dose” on one of dubstep’s founding imprints, Big Apple. A&Red by one of the most influential DJs in dubstep, DJ Hatcha, the label was run out of the Croydon shop of the same name, the hangout for much of the early pioneers and future stars such as Artwork, Horsepower, Hatcha, Chef, Plastician and Skream.
Starting the show with new music from Ikonika, Plastician, Hagan and Flava D, Carly Wilford broadcasts from self isolation bringing some much needed energy. She also speaks to Terrell Hines who stopped by London recently on the leg of his European Tour.
