I thought it might be fun to do a podcast with ‘random’ people from around the Triangle to see how they’re coping with the semi-isolation that the area is experiencing. I put a note on the Triangle Reddit sub at about 1 PM Sunday to see if I’d get any takers. I got one! And it turns out he’s another podcasters from Cary - Breandan Dezendorf. We’d never met.Breandan’s an IT guy who’s been working from home for years, so… no big deal. Starting off 7-4 until 4 PM Sunday through Monday (finish 7-8). Rough week across the board, it's time to change it up slightly. I review my week 5 picks, THEN talk about my anti-power rankings. Then I go into week 6 NFL picks and predictions. Keep in mind, I am not a sports analyst, this is used for (semi) entertainment purposes while using background noises to induce relaxation and calmness. I blend in rain sounds and outdoor sounds as sleep noises to help you relax and potentially get rid of insomnia. My underdog picks last week...big off. But I'm feeling super good for Week 6. Remember, ALWAYS do your due diligence, most of my NFL picks are for fun and my analysis is often based on survival pick' ems so every week I do hyper-focus on a few key matchups (not all of them). Get hype for Week 6 ANTI-Power Rankings. NFL Power rankings early in the season don't mean much, but I love to be EXTRA and focus on the WORST teams heading into week 5 of the NFL season. Everyone says the same things for good teams, let's flip the script and focus on the bottom feeders based on previous weeks performances. I've noticed that my anti-power rankings do a decent job of identifying bad teams and correct underdog picks. The order of the anti-power rankings goes from #1 (the worst of the worst) through #10 (least worst). Starting at #1 with the purpose of being the least interested by #10 as you drift off into dreamland. [spp-player] Show Notes for Episode #198 June 27, 2018 of Roadtreking - The RV Podcast: WHAT MIKE AND JENNIFER ARE UP TO THIS WEEK [spp-timestamp time="2:31"] Mike and Jennifer at Glacier National Park last week MIKE Well here it is the 4th of July Holiday is almost here and June has sped right by! JENNIFER It sure has. We just pulled into our driveway for a brief stop at our sticks and bricks home in Michigan after being on the road pretty much the entire month. In all we covered 4,384.7 miles from the time we left the driveway until last night when we pulled back in. We traveled through nine states making our way to Montana and Glacier National Park, where we just finished an awesome Roadtreking gathering attended by more than 130 people from all across North America MIKE There’s a post on the roadtreking.com travel blog with a full report and lots of photos from the gathering. And we’ll also have a video on it…. Just as soon as I have time to edit it. We came back with 9 videos in the can ready to be edited. But since each one takes about 20 hours to complete, I have my work cut out for me. JENNIFER As we reported last week, we did great going out and keeping to our “330 Rule” of driving no more than 330 miles in a single day, or stopping by 3:30 pm local time so we can still be refreshed and not too tired from the road. That gives us lots of time to explore… and shoot those videos! Coming back…. Well, let’s just say it was hammer time, pedal to the metal all the way, though we did stop by 3:30 one time. MIKE Except it was 3:30 AM! That was Sunday night. We stopped on the way back in the Wisconsin Dells and did our regular 9 PM Sunday night You Tube Live report on our RV Lifestyle Channel. But then we made the tactical decision that because we didn’t want to drive through Monday morning traffic in Chicago – which even during no rush hour time is horrific – we would drive through the night and avoid the traffic jams. JENNIFER But there was still lots of traffic… even at 1 in the morning. We debated taking the ferry across Lake Michigan. They have ferry service from a couple places in Wisconsin. But we couldn’t justify spending $400 to get us and the RV across. So we drive around, spent what was left of the night in a rest area just inside the Michigan border, and then made our way home. MIKE So we’re back in our sticks and bricks house. There’s lots of laundry to do and some house and yard chores but we take off in just a few days for our next Roadtreking gathering, this one to Bryson City, North Carolina on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. We’ll be camped on the Natahala River there, a beautiful white water river and we will have calm river float tours, raging rapid runs in a raft for those willing to brave it, zip line rides and, of course, lots of good socializing. He comes into the trade as an entrepreneur and owner of Tornado Seattle, a bar with a craft beer and spirits focus, also serving cider and food. Say’s Rick of his new venture with Newtopia Cyder that is both a cidery with Tastig Room, we are “making our own new American style”. He takes an engaging approach to educating and meeting the San Diego beer palate by having a set standard flight of ciders called “Four Core” Rick says, “I created a Four Core (flight of ciders) that hits every part of your palate. We use old world wine processes and blend them with new world beer ingredients” One side of the cidery is flanked with stainless steel tanks for making modern ciders. This variety can be made in 4-6 weeks and usually have a fruit or flavored component. The wall on the other side of the cidery has oak barrels stacked and filled with what Rick calls “Old World Heritage Cider”. The Tasting room has ample seating both indoors and outdoors. The taps were purposely design to be a bit high to facilitate a long pour as one would do when pouring sidra. Take home a can or crawler of cider of any of the Four Core Ciders. Join the Member Club and have access to all of the ciders being poured as a take home option. What to look forward to in the coming year from Newtopia Cyder? Distilling an Apple Jack Brandy in March 2019. Expansion into a 4000 square foot building area next door with a meat and cheese parlor too. There are 10 acres not on site but not too far away that is being used to grow cider apples. This location will be used as a destination site for weddings and events. Rick calls the growing Newtopia scene “a compound”. The feel though industrial is warm and engaging. Exactly what cider fans want in their cider compound.
