During the height of the Cold War, a group of small-town young men would lead their underdog hockey team from the little country of Czechoslovakia against the mighty Soviet Union, the juggernaut in their sport and the superpower in their neighborhood. As they battled on the ice, the young players would keep their people's quest for freedom alive, and forge a way to fight back against the authoritarian forces that sought to crush them. Join us as University of California, Davis, political science professor Ethan Scheiner, whose research focused on the intersection of politics and sports, discusses what he found out while researching and writing his new book Freedom to Win: A Cold War Story of the Courageous Hockey Team That Fought the Soviets for the Soul of Its People—and Olympic Gold. From the sudden invasion of Czechoslovakia by an armada of tanks and 500,000 Warsaw Pact soldiers, to a hockey victory over the Soviets that inspired half a million furious citizens to take to the streets in an attempt to destroy all representations that they could find of their occupiers, Scheiner tells a story that ranges from iconic moments in history to courageous individual stories. At the heart of the tale is the Holíks, a Czechoslovak family whose resistance to the Communists embodied the deepest desires of the people of their country. Faced with life under the cruel and arbitrary regime that had stolen their family butcher shop, the Holík boys became national hockey icons and inspirations to their people. Over the nearly 500 episodes of the Inner Circle I've had some incredible guests. One is the legendary engineer Elliott Scheiner, and this special replay is from way back on Episode 51 in April of 2015. You certainly have heard Elliot's work as he's been instrumental in the sound of The Eagles, Steely Dan, Eric Clapton, Jackson Browne, Sting, Foo Fighters and too many others to mention. He's received 27 Grammy award nominations winning 8, four Emmy nominations and winning two, and a host of other awards for excellence in the field of audio recording. During the interview we spoke about the various stages of his studio life, from his early days at A&R Studios in New York City, going from 4 track to 8 track, his mixing method, the difference between working with Steely Dan and The Eagles, and much more. Remember that this interview was done back in 2015 so some of his comments about digital audio workstations and plugins are no doubt different today. I spoke to Elliott via phone, so the quality is a little shaky, but not the content. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 89276221, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

Enjoy Ethan Scheiner discussing his new book, "Freedom to Win." Here are some highlights: 3:23-6:23: “The thing that is so incredible about this story is that it is an unbelievable marriage of politics and sports. That really is the thing that jumps right out. … This communist country, Czechoslovakia, which had started to become free, suddenly got invaded by the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union said, ‘We're not gonna allow this country to become free,' and so all of a sudden the people of this little country were crushed. And they found that there was only one way they could fight back. … So they turned their whole world into supporting their team to try to fight back against the Soviets on the ice, and I just sat there going, ‘This is actually politics and sports completely overlapping. I think this is the greatest story I've ever heard.'” 14:08-15:36: “It took me a little while to realize that I actually had to tell the story from a more personal angle. At first, I just thought the history of hockey in Czechoslovakia was so amazing, that it was this country where hockey was so central to fighting the Soviets. … I thought that was enough. … ‘The great narrative nonfiction books, the things that really draw people in, are really focused on individual human beings at extraordinary times, so you need to focus more on the individual human beings.' Then all of a sudden, I said, ‘Oh, my gosh. This Holík family has had this extraordinary history that actually also at the same time tells the story of this incredible country, and it's woven into this unbelievable story of hockey and sports fitting in with everything.'” 32:06-35:27: “At one time, the communists in Czechoslovakia had imprisoned the national hockey team and sent two guys and sentenced them to 15 years in the uranium mines. So people actually thought that the Soviets had forced their hockey to die so that the Soviet team could become good. And so as time went by and Czechoslovakia had a hockey team again, people thought they weren't allowed to beat the Soviets. So this was all part of this sense in Czechoslovakia, ‘The Soviets are keeping us down, and they're using the communists to do it.' … The Soviets won the 1968 Gold medal, but Czechoslovakia was so happy to have beaten the Soviets. And people actually got a sense of ‘You know what? We actually seem to have real freedom now. We even are allowed to beat the Soviets.' They actually believed that.” 47:20-48:06: “We tend to think of democracies falling apart because a bunch of people in the streets start chanting and come in and run roughshod over those in power, and then suddenly grab the gavel and say, ‘OK, we're in charge now,' sort of Doctor Evil style. But more common, what happens is people gain power through free and fair elections, but then use the instruments of power to completely undercut democracy. And so that's a big fear that people have [that] could be happening in the United States; that's certainly what happened in Czechoslovakia.” 58:07-59:07: “We've heard this chant before when we get to 1989, as now there are hundreds of thousands of people in Wenceslas Square, and they start chanting, ‘Dubček! Dubček! Dubček!' over and over. And he steps out onto this balcony as 300,000 people are chanting his name. And so he hasn't been seen for 20 years, and he's this symbol of hope, and they're chanting his name. And in this moment, he had planned on reading some remarks, but he's so touched by the moment he pantomimes embracing the crowd. … It's a stunning moment.”

Political scientist Ethan Scheiner appeared on Chatter in early 2022, right before the Olympics in Beijing, to talk about the fascinating intersection of politics, security, and Olympic events. This week, he returns to talk about the compelling connections between hockey and international relations--with a special focus on Czechoslovakia before, during, and after the Cold War. His new book, Freedom To Win, uses the stories of a range of larger-than-life characters across several decades to describe the importance of international hockey play to the Czech and Slovak national experience and to increase awareness of a too-little-known quest for freedom from oppression.David Priess and Scheiner discussed the broad intersection of hockey and politics, the intensity of the Swedish-Finnish rivalry on the ice, the origins of the game in Europe, how Czechoslovakian hockey players used their sport to fight back against Soviet domination, the 1969 Ice Hockey World Championships in Stockholm, prominent sports figures' defections from the Warsaw Pact countries during the Cold War, the internationalization of the US National Hockey League, hockey in the former Czechoslovakia after the end of Communist rule in Eastern Europe, and more.Among the works mentioned in this episode:The Chatter episode The Olympics, Politics, and SecurityThe book Freedom to Win: A Cold War Story of the Courageous Hockey Team that Fought the Soviets for the Soul of its People--and Olympic Gold, by Ethan ScheinerChatter is a production of Lawfare and Goat Rodeo. On this episode of The Mile High Podcast, you'll meet chiropractic brother, Dr. David Scheiner, D.C. Born in New York, he was exposed to spiritual practices at age 8. By his early teens, he had experienced many weekend retreat workshops facilitated by leading spiritual authorities. He also made numerous excursions and adventures to remote lands in Mexico and Spain, learning from great spiritual masters who led him deeper into silence, his heart, and healing. David found great success from 1996 – 2012 in the world of hands-on healing and speaking, as the founder of 4 holistic health and wellness centers and corporate-based wellness programs. Despite living out what he always viewed as the “American dream,” David found himself hitting unexpected bumps in the road both personally and professionally, feeling anxious, unfulfilled, and wanting more. Frightened of what might happen to him if he continued down that path, David sold his businesses and walked away from everything he had worked so tirelessly to build. David has traveled extensively to study with great teachers while living in lengthy periods of contemplation and silence. He took a deep dive into meditation retreats and began the work of fully understanding and healing himself so he could in turn fully understand and heal others. He found his way to Chiropractic and Life University, where he graduated and has practiced for 20 years. David now focuses on helping people find a way to Chiropractic as a profession. He's written two books, Chiropractic Reveal and State Laws of Chiropractic Success, as well as four novels. On this podcast you'll hear about: The meaning of success in Chiropractic and in life Gifts you give and receive as a chiropractor How to get on the right path and realize happiness, joy, and fulfillment in your life through coaching and Growth Shops And MUCH more! Leonard Scheiner is a law firm marketing wiz and CEO of GeekHaus.com. He spends his days helping law firms earn millions of dollars by utilizing Facebook ads and email marketing campaigns on a national level. Using this framework, Leonard has helped his clients build authority in their field, create brand recognition and stand apart from their competition. Leonard is a Pepperdine University graduate who has worked in this niche for the past six years. He shares his framework and strategy to grow your business exponentially using digital ads and cold email campaigns so you can generate new leads, which are the lifeline of a thriving business.Leonard decided to niche down and create a marketing agency that serves law firms' needs in branding, lead generation, marketing, funnels, and more. As unique as his marketing agency is, so are all the different firms Leonard works with. One thing that Leonard asks before taking a firm on as a client is if they have a clear image of who their ideal avatar is? - If the law firm can't come up with a clear vision of who they want to target, then GeekHause works with them on developing one before revamping their website, funnel, or anything else. The first step as a marketer is to ensure that your client has a web presence. Each law firm that Leonard works with has a website, which is insufficient to generate leads. A law firm's website is the first step in building a relationship of trust and expertise in the minds of their new potential clients. He wants you to view your website as a continual cash machine. Your law firm's website should be what sells them on your services when done right. It should list your areas of expertise, past case outcomes, strategies or tactics, and testimonials. By the time they have their initial call with you, they want to confirm that they made the right choice in hiring you. Since placing ads has become so expensive, Leonard's company calculates the return on your ad spend before deciding which platform to place digital ads. At GeekHaus, they refer to ad spend as a heat map calculation. It's the first part of how he markets his clients. When he first takes on a client, they look to see how many ads they are running that are bringing in revenue. If all it's doing is costing the firm advertising money, they shore up that part of the campaign. The second part that GeekHaus focuses on is your email list. The people on the list may not be your client right now. But they are a warmer lead than someone not on your list. That right there is something that you want to tap into as a law firm marketer. Another factor that makes an email list valuable is that it's the only channel you own. It belongs to your firm, and no one can shut you down. So if a firm hires GeekHaus, and they don't currently have an email list. That's the first thing Leonard focuses on. An email list allows you to nurture leads and stay top of mind with your ideal client. It's a resource not many firms tap into. The best way to grow your clientele is to be where your ideal client is. Sometimes that requires repurposing content for different platforms, but that is how you nurture each client where they are comfortable. When you tie it all together, the secret to keeping your pipeline full in a niche market is to know who your clients are, where you can find them and how to market them directly. These are all actionable tips that you can use to grow your client-based business. In this episode:[2:25] Leonard explains why he chose to niche down to a narrow clienteleAttorneys are a service-based business, and they don't always realize the importance of advertisingLaw touches every aspect of our lives in one way or another. Hence, you need to market to your direct audience Every service-based company needs an online presence. [5:45] Your websSupport the show
