Podcast: Dartford man jailed after violent assault on Whitstable mum with boiling sugar water and hammer

KentOnline

A good Samaritan has told of the terrifying moment boiling sugar water was poured over her as she lay in bed. What started as a decent deed from the Whitstable mum ended with a horror attack, which also saw her hit around the head with a hammer. Also in today's podcast, the Folkestone son of a woman who was arrested with her partner in Iran on charges of espionage has confirmed they've been jailed for 10 years. Lindsay and Craig Foreman were detained in January 2025 while travelling through the country on a motorcycle journey. Frustrated residents have joined forces to demand the return of their lost community centre, described as “the heart of the village”. They came together outside the now-shut building which previously served as the base for Age UK day centre. There are calls for parents in Kent to be more aware of the impact physical activity can have on their children's mental health. Exercise is being suggested as a way of helping those who might be struggling with things like stress, depression or anxiety. And you can hear from a couple who are relishing the opportunity to realise a lifetime's ambition of running their community pub. They've taken over The Rising Sun in Rochester, a venue they've frequented for many years. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Quadra Recreational Society seeks public input on Community Centre and New Pavilion

Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents -The Quadra Island Recreation Society is asking the community for their input into what the island's Community Centre and a new pavilion at Blenkin Park should be used for. Marc Doll, Vice Chair of the Society, explained: “We started by looking at one desperate need for the community centre, which was the lack of a proper kitchen facility. We came up with some solutions, but the price tag came in higher than what we wanted for a very small improvement. So, conversations continued, and we decided that we really had to look at the bigger picture. The Quadra Island Community Centre has been serving the community since 1985, and we felt it was time to go back to the public and ask: what do we need this building to do for the next 20 years?” “At the same time, we've been working with the SRD for the last number of years to get an outdoor pavilion in Blenkin Park. The funding is in place, and we're looking to start building as early as 2026.” “So, we're going to the community to ask: does this community centre suit the needs of the community for the next 20 years? Or are there things that we need to start preparing for now? At the same time, now that we have money in place for a pavilion, we want to make sure we reach out to all the groups that currently use the facility—the concert groups, Quadra Palooza, the theatre groups, etc.—to say, 'Is this something that you would want?' And if so, what form would it need to take to best suit your use? How does the community imagine using it? Where should it be placed? What elements need to be incorporated to ensure it is well-used?” Cortes Currents: Have you received any new ideas coming out of this so far? Marc Doll: “The press release just went out. We have put a postcard into every mailbox on Quadra, which directs people toward a questionnaire online@yourcommunitycentre.ca. I think the postcards only hit mailboxes yesterday. I'm not going to look into the responses until everything is in. The survey closes on March 1st, and then there is a committee meeting to synthesize the responses and plan the next step, which will likely be a public open house.” Cortes Currents: Can people mail in their responses instead of going online? Marc Doll: “Yes. The idea is that there are also forms available at the community centre for those who don't want to do it online. They can stop by the centre or grab a form from Jane for a written response.” Cortes Currents: How integral are these projects to the community? Marc Doll: “The community centre is the only piece of public infrastructure that Quadra Island has. When we look forward to the challenges that the future is going to place on us, having strong communities and places for people to gather, organize, and learn is what's going to hold us together.” Cortes Currents: Why does Quadra need a new pavilion at Blenkin Park? Marc Doll: “The summer months offer so much opportunity. The park is large but generally not well-used in the summer. We want to bring people together; currently, we have no place for a theatre group to put on 'Shakespeare in the Park,' or even for the public to gather under cover for a family picnic on a rainy day. The community centre is a wedding venue in many ways, but it doesn't have that outdoor capacity to allow a young couple to get married without the fear of being rained upon. All these things are important community offerings that we're currently just not able to do.”

GUELPH POLITICAST #502 - What's Next '26: The South End Community Centre (feat. Danna Evans & Ian Scott)

It's the start of a new year, but more than that it's the start of a big year for Guelph, and not just because there's a municipal election in October. To end 2025, and to start 2026, this podcast will be airing back-to-back episodes that will mark the pending completion of two major construction projects by this time next year: Today we're talking all about the South End Community Centre! Drive down Clair Road West and you can see it peaking over the hills on the left hand side: The South End Community Centre. Construction began in 2023, but like most massive construction projects in Guelph it's a story that goes back decades. A June 2014 report recommended that a nearly $60 million facility be built on lands south of Bishop MacDonell Secondary School, but it took three years to get to detailed design and it took another three years to get it ready to start construction.  The SECC will feature twin ice pads, an aquatic centre with a lap and teaching pool, a double gymnasium, walking track and multi-purpose rooms, all connected by a central lobby covering a total of 160,000 square feet. But then there are the expectations. Guelph is presently underserviced by rec facilities, the pool at Centennial had to close early, and there's a whole Parks and Rec Master Plan approved a few years ago banking on new opportunities at the new centre. So is city staff ready to deliver? The people who can answer that are today's guests, the City of Guelph's general manager of culture and recreation Danna Evans, and the general manager of facilities and energy management Ian Scott. They will talk about the current state of construction, what work is left to be done and if there are any issues that might prevent it from opening on time. Plus, they will talk about staffing the centre, planning for the programming, and whether or not the South End Community Centre will have a proper name!  So let's look forward to the South End Community Centre on this week's Guelph Politicast!  The South End Community Centre is currently scheduled to open sometime in the fall of 2026. You can follow the progress on construction on the City of Guelph's website here, and you learn more about the facility itself here. Come back to this feed tomorrow for a podcast about the other big construction project that will be opening in the fall of 2026, the new main library downtown. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. Find more episodes of the Politicast here, or download them on your favourite podcast app at Apple, TuneIn and Spotify . Also, when you subscribe to the Guelph Politicast channel and you will also get an episode of Open Sources Guelph every Monday, and an episode of End Credits every Friday.

Mikveh makeover: A U.S. charity helped build or renovate 10 ritual baths across Canada

While many Canadians are continuing to boycott products made in the United States, when it comes to mikvehs, nearly a dozen Canadian Jewish communities have no qualms about accepting their money. Mikvah USA is a Brooklyn-based charity that gives out financial aid, advice and technical support for renovating outdated mikvehs and building brand-new ones, and in the last few years, they've supported 10 clients in Ontario and Quebec. One of them is Ottawa's Naomi Bulka Community Mikvah, which held its grand reopening on July 20, having completed a makeover of the 25-year-old facility, attached to Ottawa's Soloway ewish Community Centre. While only 30 women have been using the mikveh each month, officials believe they will attract larger crowds who come for the religious experience in a bright, refreshed, spa-like atmosphere. The team in Ottawa received a grant to kickstart independent fundraising from Mikvah USA, which has been subsidizing mikveh projects across North America since 2004, mostly in smaller Jewish communities. The list includes London, Ont.; Quebec City; and a forthcoming mikveh in Saint-Agathe-des-Monts, Que., which is still under construction. On today's episode of The CJN's North Star podcast, host Ellin Bessner is joined by some Canadian mikveh organizers who collaborated with the American charity to get their projects to the finish line: Dina Teitlebaum and her husband, Rabbi Levy Teitlebaum, in Ottawa, and Chana Carlebach and her husband, Rabbi Emanuel Carlebach, who are building the multimillion-dollar mikveh in Saint-Agathe-des-Monts. For this week's bonus podcast, it's time for some Listener Questions! First off, we answer Breaunte's question, who wants to know how we'd make the Community Centre a bigger part of the show. Considering that this is a place that you're lucky to see the inside of more than ten times a year, there's certainly scope for it to be used a heck of a lot more, but what exactly would we do with it? We hope you're listening, Kate Brooks, cos we've got plenty of ideas! Next up, the chance to be a bit sillier and more imaginative as Frankie asks us which Simpsons characters would play which Weatherfield residents if the long-running animated sitcom were to do a crossover with the even longer-running soap. Would Homer play Steve or Tim? Which classic Corrie villain would Sideshow Bob suit best? Are there any couples of families who can be directly transposed? Hopefully if you're a Simpsons fan you like some of our ideas, and we'd love to hear yours too!
