A West Clare village's growing population is said to be resulting in increased demand for childcare in the area. KCD Playschool, which is located in St Michael's Community Centre in Kilmihil and is operated by Kilmihil Community Development, has secured planning permission for an expansion of services. The facility will now be running services before, during and after school hours, with 50 children already on its books for its after school care service in September. Kilmihil Community Development Chairperson Martin Keane says they're grateful to be able provide such a sought-after facility.

A West Clare childcare provider says it may have to hire extra staff if a planned expansion of its services gets the green light. KCD Playschool, which is located in St Michael's Community Centre in Kilmihil is in the process of seeking planning permission to allow is to offer a before school breakfast club in addition to its daytime services. Kilmihil Community Development, which runs the playschool, is holding its AGM at 8pm tonight in the community centre where it's understood the future of the service will be a topic of discussion. Chairperson of Kilmihil Community Development, Martin Keane, says adding new staff members to its roster is one avenue they're considering.

After that, Alan was joined by Izabela Knotowska to discuss the fundraising she has done for her cousin Sara Fodrowska who is battling cancer. Alan then spoke with the Clare Ladies Soccer League Officer, Paul Fitzgerald about the Clare Ladies Soccer League who are seeking expressions of interest from clubs. Later, Alan welcomed the Owner & Manager of Clonlara Equestrian Centre, Davnet Kiernan O'Brien, to discuss the equestrian centre. Alan was then joined by local Clonlara sculptor and artist Enda Griffin, to tell us about his work. We then heard from Pharmacist at Ballycasey Pharmacy, Anke Knight, who told us about the proposal to make prescriptions for common conditions available at pharmacies without a GP visit. To close the show, Alan was joined by Clonlara musician Arren for a chat and live performance.

We begin tonight in Christchurch where 10 helicopters, and firefighters onboard 15 trucks and tankers, are battling a large fire in the Port Hills. The fire started around 2.15 this afternoon and plumes of black smoke are billowing across the city. Power is out to at least 15-thousand properties, and residents of Worsleys Road and Worsleys Spur have been told to evacuate immediately. Evacuation centres has been set up at the Halswell Library and Community Centre, and the Lincoln Community Centre. An Auckland Jewish community centre's fence was vandalised overnight, including an attempt to set it on fire. Pro Palestinian graffiti was also sprayed on the fence of the Beth Shalom centre in Epsom last night. Rowan Quinn reports.
