Breandan Considine is a PhD student at the School of Computer Science at McGill University, under the supervision of Jin Guo and Xujie Si). There, he is building tools to help developers locate and reason about software artifacts, by learning to read and write code. I met Breandan while doing my "scale is all you need" series of interviews at Mila, where he surprised me by sitting down for two hours to discuss AGI timelines, augmenting developers with AI and neuro symbolic AI. A fun fact that many noticed while watching the "Scale Is All You Need change my mind" video is that he kept his biking hat most of the time during the interview, since he was close to leaving when we talked. All of the conversation below is real, but note that since I was not prepared to talk for so long, my camera ran out of battery and some of the video footage on Youtube is actually AI generated (Brendan consented to this). Disclaimer: when talking to people in this podcast I try to sometimes invite guests who share different inside views about existential risk from AI so that everyone in the AI community can talk to each other more and coordinate more effectively. On this episode, John and Gord speak with Breandan from Marxism And Moshpits, who is also an organizer with the Nebraska Left Coalition. We discuss the formation of this org, along with some of the main issues and features non-tendency Left-Wing organizations encounter. This is all in a process for us to look at how mutual aid organizing, as it becomes more and more important, might look for those in the educational community who want to get involved.  We also talk about the real pitfalls of what organizing looks like now, not to mention what types of strategies and tactics may need to change or be revisited. This week we welcome Stella Spacebeaver (aka Karin Abell), one of the organizers of the Beaver Queen Pageant, a wacky fundraising event for the Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association. Ellerby Creek is a little waterway that winds through the north side of Durham, emptying into Falls Lake. It’s home to several public parks and recreation areas. The Pageant is a contest of sorts, with a half-dozen or so contestants who create beaver-related costumes and performances. Everyone else ‘votes’ and/or bribes the judges to select the contestant of their choice to be anointed this year’s Beaver Queen (contestants can be male or female). Normally the pageant is held outdoors alongside the creek. This being the year of our Covid 2020, the pageant is going online, and for the rest of May and June, the sponsors will be releasing videos of the contestants and other activities on their web site, YouTube Channel and Facebook Community. “Social and Emotional Learning” is all the rage in school these days, along with claims that it can help children to manage their emotions, make responsible decisions, as well as improve academic outcomes. But what if those programs don’t go nearly far enough? What if we could support our child in developing a sense of compassion that acts as a moral compass to not only display compassion toward others, but also to pursue those things in life that have been demonstrated – through research – to make us happy?  And what if we could do that by supporting them in reading cues they already feel in their own bodies, and that we ordinarily train out of them at a young age?
