Local authorities have improved their environmental performance by 20% over the past three years, with close to four-fifths of the National Enforcement Priority meeting the required standard in 2024. That is according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which has published its Local Authority Environmental Enforcement Performance Report 2024. The disappointing news from a Clare perspective, however, is that Clare County Council was ranked among the worst performing local authorities in the country when it comes to enforcing environmental protection legislation. The EPA's report shows this county's local authority met the required standard in respect of just 11 of the 19 National Enforcement Priorities last year. To look at this more closely, Alan spoke to Sinead Sheehan, Scariff-based Futureproof Clare spokesperson and Eddie Punch, Former ICMSA General Secretary and Cratloe Farmer on Friday's Morning Focus. A special theatre production is taking place in Scariff this weekend and it's all in aid of a cause that's brought comfort to many grieving families across Clare. Local director Denise Moroney is staging Among Women, a collection of powerful female monologues performed by members of the former Scariff Drama Group, to raise funds for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust. The charity helped bring Denise's brother, Martin Noel McNamara, home to Clare earlier this year after he was fatally injured in a traffic accident in the United States, and she's now honouring his memory through the stage. For more on this, Denise joined Alan Morrissey on Friday's Morning Focus. Photo (c) Sliabh Aughty Drama Group Facebook

ESB says it expects the majority of electricity outages, caused by Storm Amy, in Clare to be restored before tonight. As a status yellow warning for wind expires, at present there are 640 homes, farms and business remain without power across the county, down from 5,500 at the height of the storm. The east of the county was worst affected, with over half of the remaining outages seen in Tulla, Bodyke, O'Callaghan's Mills, Scariff, Whitegate and Ogonnelloe. ESB Clare Area Manager, Alan Hogan, says they're expecting all major outages to be rectified today, however, some small pockets will remain without power overnight.

A Clare MEP has questioned if political lobbying is the cause of proposed amendments to new artificial intelligence laws. The Artificial Intelligence Act is a European Union regulation which came into force on August 1st 2024 and establishes a common regulatory and legal framework for AI within the European Union. The provisions of the act are coming into effect gradually and will all be in operation within 36 months of the act's introduction. Speaking in the European Parliament, Scariff-based Independent MEP Michael McNamara says it's highly unusual to propose amending legislation in its infancy.

The commission for communications regulation has been requested to carry out a review of Clare's coverage. It follows concerns raised at this weeks meeting of Clare County Council, involving residents, businesses and emergency services being impacted by blackspots and areas of poor service. So far this year, new telecommunications towers have already been approved in Corofin, Crusheen and Scariff. Clarecastle Sinn Féin Councillor Tommy Guilfoyle says it's a problem that needs tackling countywide.

A Clare MEP claims the Irish beef sector and the environment will be among the biggest losers of a highly controversial EU trade deal. The EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement, which was agreed in principle last December, would remove import duties on 91% of EU imports from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, while allowing 99,000 tonnes of beef from these countries into the EU each year. An event entitled 'Mercosur - The Implications for Ireland' is taking place at the Radisson Blu Hotel on the Ennis Road on the Clare-Limerick border tonight at 8pm and will feature the Director of Meat Industry Ireland, Dale Crammond. Scariff-based Independent MEP Michael McNamara, who's chairing tonight's event, says there's very little in it for Ireland.

Scariff and Ballyea will be hoping to bounce back from opening round defeats when they face off in Round 2 of the TUS Clare Senior Hurling Championship. The sides meet in Zimmer Biomet Páirc Chiosóg on Sunday afternoon, knowing defeat will put their championship campaign in serious jeopardy. Ballyea surrendered an eleven point half time lead as they lost by a point to Kilmaley, while Scariff were edged out by Cratloe by three points first time out. Clare FM analyst, Tommy Guilfoyle, says both teams will be looking to finish the game stronger this time around. Throw on Sunday is at 5pm with commentary on Clare FM with NC Paint and Décor, Ashline, Kilrush Rd, Ennis
Ballyea manager Robbie Hogan says his side will have to dust themselves down and take the positives from their performance in the first game of the TUS Clare Senior Hurling Championship. His side fell to a one point defeat to Kilmaley leaving them on the back foot in Group 4 ahead of their crucial second round clash with Scariff. The 2022 county champions had looked set to open their account with a win as they held an 11 point lead at half time, after Tony Kelly netted twice in first half. Hogan's been telling Clare FM's Derek Dormer that their inability to get on breaking ball in the second period let them down. Meanwhile, Clooney Quin Boss Fergal Lynch is lauding his sides staying power as they kicked off their campaign with a win. A late surge saw them claim a three point victory over Broadford to sit second in Group 2, with leaders Inagh-Kilnamona providing the opposition in the next round. Lynch says his players have finished strong in every game they've played this year.

The opening round of this year's TUS Clare Senior Hurling Championship provided plenty of drama across the weekend. Kilmaley came back from the dead to snatch a one point victory against Ballyea, while newly promoted Wolfe Tones shared the spoils with reigning champions Feakle in Zimmer Biomet Páirc Chiosóg. Clonlara laid down an early marker in the first game of the 2025 championship as they defeated 2024 beaten finalists Sixmilebridge by a point in their Group 1 encounter on Friday evening. The Bridge thought they'd secured a draw with an Alex Morey free in added time but a placed ball of their own from Cathal O'Connell claimed a 1-19 to 1-18 win for 2023 Canon Hamilton winners. The team that were defeated on that occasion are top of Group 1 after the opening weekend however, as Crusheen opened their account with a five point win over Doora/Barefield on a score of 23 points to 1-15. Inagh-Kilnamona sit atop Group 2 following the opening weekend of action after a convincing win over Corofin. The combo notched an impressive 31 points in their 13 point victory in Gurteen. Meanwhile, Clooney-Quin occupy second spot after Darragh McNamara raided for a late goal to defeat Broadford 1-18 to 2-12. Group 3 saw the meeting of the reigning Senior and Intermediate champions as Feakle and Wolfe Tones played out a 19 points to 1-16 draw. Darragh Lohan netted a second half penalty for the Shannon side early in the second half, while the county champions might have to contend with the loss of keeper Eibhear Quilligan who went off in the first half. Feakle boss Ger Conway says his side did well to hold onto a point given the number of injuries in his squad. In the other game in that group a red card for Luca Cleary didn't deter Éire Óg as they downed Newmarket on Fergus in Clarecastle. Darren O'Brien and Marco Cleary raised second half green flags en route to a 2-24 to 1-19 win. Kilmaley produced a remarkable comeback as they defeated Ballyea in Group 4. Two stunning Tony Kelly goals in the opening period looked to have given his side an insurmountable eleven point half time lead. However, spurred on by goals from Tommy Barry and Conor Cleary, Kilmaley gradually reeled in the 2022 champions before a Mikey O'Malley free sealed the most unlikely of comebacks. Kilmaley boss Brian Culbert says his sides's first 30 minutes left a lot to be desired and credited the victory to an increase in intensity. Cratloe, however, will head into the next round in pole position. They got the better of Scariff 1-24 to 1-21 in a thrilling encounter in Broadford. In the Premier Intermediate championship O'Callaghan's Mills and Tubber recorded wins in Group 1, while Clarecastle lead the way in Group 2 after they defeated Whitegate, while Ruan and Sixmilebridge played out a draw.
There's a call for the Government to provide clarity as to whether a new Model three hospital in the Midwest will be included in the National Development Plan. The revised plan gives the Department of Health an allocation of €9 billion for 2026 to 2030 but a list of projects to be supported isn't expected to be finalised for several months. The findings of HIQA's review of emergency capacity in this region are due in September and hopes for a new emergency department were dealt a significant blow in May when HSE MidWest made a submission that didn't recommend such a facility. Scariff-based Independent MEP Michael McNamara believes residents of Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary deserve a straight answer on the matter.

It's claimed Clare farmers are being left significantly out of pocket due to an outdated compensation scheme. Currently the maximum remuneration available to a farmer who loses a cow to Bovine Tuberculosis is €3,000 or €5,000 for a pedigree bull. Farming bodies such as the IFA, ICMSA and ICSA have called for the cap to be increased however, citing operating costs and modern market values. Farmer and Scariff based Independent Member of European Parliament Michael McNamara says it must be updated.
A Clare-based MEP is calling for an end to trade between the European Union and Israel amid what he refers to as a genocide being "fuelled" by Germany in Gaza. Independent Member of the European Parliament Michael McNamara is seeking the immediate suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement. Under the agreement which was put in place in 2000, trade between the EU and Israel is governed by a free trade area. Speaking in the European Parliament, the Scariff native claims European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is responsible for her county once again being on the wrong side of history.

Andor's second season BBY 2 story arc is the best "movie" of the three arcs so far. No controversies, unless you think gently altering the way episodes of animated TV and a one-shot comic told the Star Wars story is something about which to get upset. It's always better to see the live action events unfold, at least according to This is the Way Podcast.Today's episode includes first impressions of the stories told in episodes 7, 8, and 9 and the closer we get to Rogue One and A New Hope, the more at stake. It's not a surprise that Cassian Andor is getting out of this show alive. He has a date with destiny on Scariff. This podcast may appear here on YouTube, but it's an audio form for a YouTube audience. I know others provide video clips of the show, but "the Mouse" and Lucasfilm are very proactive in the way they copyright strike and we don't have the time to work by trial and error until we hit on the right formula. The full recap and discussion episodes will come later. Life events have their way of altering schedules, but even with so much going on last week, the episodes were finished before new Andor started streaming on Tuesday night. The hope, dear listeners, is that we can continue to make that happen. If you have an episode specific comment, email it to the address we reveal in our podcasts, but you can interact with This is the Way Podcast via 'X' and Instagram @ThisistheWayPod or on Facebook, Youtube, and also on Spotify! May the Force be with us!
Traders on Ennis's main street are crediting pedestrianisation with allowing them to harness the economic opportunities presented by this week's hot spell. With temperatures hitting the mid-twenties across the county today, businesses are pulling out all the stops to ensure they see the benefit. It's expected to be the hottest day of 2025 so far and Met Éireann says it's keeping a "close watch" to see if it'll be the warmest April day in Ireland on record. The top temperature identified anywhere in the county in April is 25.8 degrees, which was experienced in Glenties in County Donegal in 1984. Shannon and Ennis is expected to see highs of 24 degrees this afternoon, while it'll be 23 degrees in Kilrush, Ennistymon, Killaloe and Scariff. The town's main thoroughfare, O'Connell Street, is now fully-pedestrianised, and Head Gelato Maker at Gino's, Sam Toth says in his experience, the resulting atmosphere is "flawless". The Ennis Public Realm Regeneration project is still ongoing but is expected to be wrapped up by the end of this year. The appointed contractor, Shareridge, claims the O'Connell Square phase will conclude by the end of June while works in the Cathedral Zone will be completed by the end of September. Construction in the vicinity of Bank Place, Abbey Street and Barrack Street, meanwhile, are forecast to be finalised by the business end of December. Mark Kelly of the Diamond Bar is one business owner who's embraced the newly-pedestrianised O'Connell Street with outdoor seating and he says he fully welcomes the change. Some business in Ennis haven't known life without construction taking place outside the door and the dual ventures of entrepreneur Aoibhín Garrihy, Beo and The Well, are one example. Brand Manager Katie Hands claims the works have had little impact on the business's viability. She says on a balmy day like today, there's no better place to be.
