The ban which will apply across the EU comes into effect on December 2nd, and under it offending companies will face fines of at least €35m. This year marks a major milestone for one of East Clare's best-loved community events as Scariff Agricultural Show celebrates its 80th anniversary. To mark the occasion, a new Heritage Council-funded project is underway to document and preserve the rich history of the Show, and organisers are now appealing to the public for photographs, programmes, memorabilia and personal memories that tell the story of the event since its beginnings in 1944. The Eight Decades of the Scariff Show: Oral and Community Heritage Project will create a permanent digital archive, capturing the experiences of volunteers, exhibitors, farmers and families who have helped shape the Show over the past eight decades. Joining Alan Morrissey this morning to tell him more about the project, the public appeal and why preserving these stories is so important are Dr Tomás Mac Conmara of Mac Conmara Heritage Consulting, along with Scariff Show Committee members Paddy Doyle and John Blake. A Clare MEP is calling for urgent action at national and European level to support victims of drug debt intimidation. Speaking during a debate in the European Parliament on the rights and protection of victims of crime, the Scariff-based MEP Michael McNamara highlighted the particular vulnerability of young people caught in cycles of drug debt. Ireland's first national data report on drug-related intimidation, published this year by the Health Research Board, recorded more than 1,000 cases across every county, with nearly three in ten victims experiencing intimidation for more than a year. MEP McNamara says victims are often too frightened to turn to the authorities.

Post primary enrolment in Clare has jumped from 8,660 students in 2020 to 9,583 at the end of last year, an increase of 10.6%. To explore this, Alan Morrissey joined by Mona Hynes, Principal at Mary Immaculate Secondary School in Lisdoonvarna and Cllr Pat Hayes, Chair of board of management at Scariff community college. A Clare MEP is urging the Government to introduce free public transport to offset the effect of rising energy prices. It follows the International Monetary Fund's warning that "all roads lead to higher prices and slower growth nationwide". Have you seen, read or heard about Inside The Manosphere? Louis Theroux's new Netflix documentary is shining a light on the rise of so-called “manosphere” culture online, and the influence of figures like Andrew Tate on young men. It has sparked a wider debate about misogyny, social media, and the pressures facing a new generation. Clare-based singer-songwriter, Steo Wall has been reflecting on Inside The Manosphere and toxic masculinity in a powerful opinion piece. To discuss this further, he joined Alan Morrissey in-studio. Alan was also joined by two young men from the Fishbowl youth club in Scariff, Jakob Kurtz and Kumar Rubin. Image © Netflix

One of the longest-running events in Ireland's amateur theatre calendar is back, as the Clare Drama Festival gets underway this week. Now in its 77th year, the festival brings together some of the very best drama groups from across the country, all competing for a place in the All-Ireland finals. Running right through to the 27th of March, audiences can expect a packed programme with something for everyone. On Thursday's Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey spoke with PRO of the festival, Tom Hanley.
An East Clare community is expressing frustration following a government proposal to remove a full-time Special Needs Assistant from a local school. It's understood Flagmount NS has received correspondence from the Department of Education indicating it will lose its full time SNA for this year. The Government has now, however, announced a pause to its ongoing SNA review, following significant backlash. Scariff based Independent MEP Michael McNamara says the decision must be reversed.
On Tuesday's Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey was joined by author, Johanna Treacy to discuss her new book, Rescue Tails: Heartwarming Rescue Stories. The book features 15 uplifting stories of animal rescues, with all proceeds from sales going to Hilltop Animal Sanctuary in Scariff.

A Clare based MEP is hopeful an upcoming review of the Mercosur deal by Europe's highest court can help to prevent the controversial trading arrangement. European Parliament members marginally voted to refer the text of the deal to the European Court of Justice at a ballot in Strasbourg yesterday. Under its current terms, up to 99,000 tonnes of beef from Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia would enter the EU each year with reduced tariffs, however farmers are concerned with the quality of the produce. Scariff native, farmer and Independent MEP Michael McNamara believes the deal is unworkable in its current form.
On Thursday's Morning Focus, we were delighted to welcome Peneleapaí, a singer-songwriter from Scariff whose ethereal, acoustic folk blends traditional Irish roots with global influences. Her new single, Farewell to Seasons, explores endings, transitions, and the cycles of life, offering a reflective, intimate soundscape that invites listeners to pause, connect, and find renewal. Alan Morrissey had a chat with Peneleapaí to find out more.
Clare's MEP is to play a key role in efforts to ban nudificiation apps at an EU level. Independent MEP Michael McNamara, has taken up the position of Lead Negotiator for the EU's AI Act Revision with the duties of overseeing the European Commission's legislative package amending key elements of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act. Central to the amendment of the act is a proposal for the ban of nudification apps, with Grok's sexual image generation setting now blocked in Ireland. The Scariff native says one of the big challenges of his new role is the ill-preparedness of some EU states to implement new legislation around "high risk" systems set to come into effect in August.
Irish MEPs are returning to Brussels this week to push for stricter food safety measures under the Mercosur trade deal. They want to ensure products meet EU standards and do not contain illegal or harmful growth promoters. They plan to meet colleagues from other countries, including Italy and France, where MEPs are reported to be wavering. The deal was provisionally approved by EU member states last week. Thousands of farmers and supporters, along with representatives from the country's MEPs gathered for a rolling tractor protest in Athlone on Saturday, part of a national demonstration and rally in Athlone to protest against the EU-Mercosur trade agreement. Independent Ireland MEP Ciarán Mullooly says he will call on colleagues to remove South American meat imports as part of the agreement. For more on this, Alan Morrissey was joined live in-studio by Scariff-based Independent Ireland South MEP Michael McNamara and Tulla-based Fianna Fail Minister of State Timmy Dooley on Monday's Morning Focus. Over €800,000 in funding has been made available to renovate key buildings across Clare. Mountshannon is the biggest beneficiary where €500,000 has been allocated under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme to refurbish a 1940's community hall into a modern accessible theatre with a market space. Scariff is receiving €274,800 to redevelop a derelict building into a youth centre, while €50,000 is going to Miltown Malbay to expand a creative space in the former Bank of Ireland building. Clare Minister of State Timmy Dooley has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that it will revitalise local communities.
Ireland has secured a three-year extension to the controversial nitrates derogation. The EU has voted to extend the Nitrates derogation up to the end of 2028. The current derogation was due to expire at the end of the month. Farming organisations have welcomed the decision, saying it is sensible and recognises the country's grass-based system. Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon says an extension will be positive for farmers here. For more on this, Alan Morrissey was joined by Michael McNamara, Scariff-based Ireland South MEP and Eddie Punch, Former ICSA General Secretary, Cratloe Farmer. The authority responsible for the Limerick to Scariff Greenway has pledged to bring all East Clare residents with it as it progresses the project. The 43-kilometre greenway, which will be carried out in five stages, is being delivered by Waterways Ireland in partnership with Clare County Council and Limerick City and County Council. Public consultation on the first section, which spans from Blackbridge to Errina Bridge, is set to take place in the first half of next year. Speaking after a presentation to Killaloe Municipal District, Waterways Ireland Western Regional Manager Brian Treacy says locals will have the opportunity to make contributions before any section goes to planning.
