For National Biodiversity Week we bring you stories of traditional farming and rural life and how they relate to biodiversity. There are very few direct references to biodiversity in the Cuimhneamh an Chláir archive since that concept has only become part of common language in more recent times. However there are stories of plant life and nature, cures, dyes, farming practices etc that tell us in subtle ways about biodiversity and environmental sustainability.Featured are Brendan Dunford from Tubber (Burren Beo Trust), John Vaughan from Kilfenora, Pat & Oliver Nagle from Corofin, Sean O' Halloran from Kilfenora, Paddy Joe McMahon from Cappabane, Scariff, Teresa Flynn from Mountshannon, Thomas Barry from Inagh, Michael McGrath from Lisdoonvarna / Scariff, Bridie Mahony from Moughna, Catherine Talty from Coore. The collectors / cuairteóirí are Paula Carroll, Tomás MacConmara, Frances Madigan. For more of Catherine Talty's self-recordings check the Cuimhneamh an Chláir collections at Digital Repository of Ireland, supported by The Heritage Council. Andor's second season BBY 2 story arc is the best "movie" of the three arcs so far. No controversies, unless you think gently altering the way episodes of animated TV and a one-shot comic told the Star Wars story is something about which to get upset. It's always better to see the live action events unfold, at least according to This is the Way Podcast.Today's episode includes first impressions of the stories told in episodes 7, 8, and 9 and the closer we get to Rogue One and A New Hope, the more at stake. It's not a surprise that Cassian Andor is getting out of this show alive. He has a date with destiny on Scariff. This podcast may appear here on YouTube, but it's an audio form for a YouTube audience. I know others provide video clips of the show, but "the Mouse" and Lucasfilm are very proactive in the way they copyright strike and we don't have the time to work by trial and error until we hit on the right formula. The full recap and discussion episodes will come later. Life events have their way of altering schedules, but even with so much going on last week, the episodes were finished before new Andor started streaming on Tuesday night. The hope, dear listeners, is that we can continue to make that happen. If you have an episode specific comment, email it to the address we reveal in our podcasts, but you can interact with This is the Way Podcast via 'X' and Instagram @ThisistheWayPod or on Facebook, Youtube, and also on Spotify! May the Force be with us!

Traders on Ennis's main street are crediting pedestrianisation with allowing them to harness the economic opportunities presented by this week's hot spell. With temperatures hitting the mid-twenties across the county today, businesses are pulling out all the stops to ensure they see the benefit. It's expected to be the hottest day of 2025 so far and Met Éireann says it's keeping a "close watch" to see if it'll be the warmest April day in Ireland on record. The top temperature identified anywhere in the county in April is 25.8 degrees, which was experienced in Glenties in County Donegal in 1984. Shannon and Ennis is expected to see highs of 24 degrees this afternoon, while it'll be 23 degrees in Kilrush, Ennistymon, Killaloe and Scariff. The town's main thoroughfare, O'Connell Street, is now fully-pedestrianised, and Head Gelato Maker at Gino's, Sam Toth says in his experience, the resulting atmosphere is "flawless". The Ennis Public Realm Regeneration project is still ongoing but is expected to be wrapped up by the end of this year. The appointed contractor, Shareridge, claims the O'Connell Square phase will conclude by the end of June while works in the Cathedral Zone will be completed by the end of September. Construction in the vicinity of Bank Place, Abbey Street and Barrack Street, meanwhile, are forecast to be finalised by the business end of December. Mark Kelly of the Diamond Bar is one business owner who's embraced the newly-pedestrianised O'Connell Street with outdoor seating and he says he fully welcomes the change. Some business in Ennis haven't known life without construction taking place outside the door and the dual ventures of entrepreneur Aoibhín Garrihy, Beo and The Well, are one example. Brand Manager Katie Hands claims the works have had little impact on the business's viability. She says on a balmy day like today, there's no better place to be.

This is continuing a tradition that spans over a century of honouring local heroes who fought for Irish freedom. This year, the committee will pay tribute to two remarkable individuals: Martin ‘The Neighbour' McNamara of Kilkishen, a legendary East Clare fighter, and Kathleen Foley (née McCormack) of Clonlara, who served as second in command of the East Clare Brigade of Cumann na mBan. To learn more, Alan Morrissey was joined by the Cathaoirleach of the East Clare Memorial Committee, Cllr Pat Hayes, and the Secretary of the East Clare Memorial Committee, Tomás MacComara. The HSE is being urged to end the "unacceptable" practice of unfunded ambulance shifts in Clare. It's understood ambulance cover in Ennistymon on Wednesdays, Scariff on Thursdays and Kilkee on Fridays is primarily secured through overtime or relief staff. The issue has come to prominence again following a number of high profile incidents locally, including reports of a student waiting over an hour for an ambulance after having a seizure at a North Clare school. Clarecastle Sinn Féin Councillor Tommy Guilfoyle says Clare is the poor relation compared to the rest of the country.

A Clare MEP has accused the Government of an "act of desperation" in allowing a case involving asylum seekers' human rights go to the European Court Justice. The ECJ's Advocate General has issued an opinion stating that Ireland can't use lack of capacity as an excuse not to house those seeking international protection here. The High Court in Ireland had sought a ruling from the ECJ after two applicants alleged breaches of their rights after being denied housing when seeking asylum in Ireland in 2023. Scariff native, Independent MEP Michael McNamara, saying the Government's resources should be going into speeding up processing times.

The lack of information on the current stage of the Limerick to Scariff Greenway has been branded as "disappointing". Killaloe Municipal District has revealed that a peer review of the preferred route corridor of the long-awaited greenway has taken place and public consultation on the project will be held on the peer review group and Transport Infrastructure Ireland have concluded discussions. On foot of a motion tabled by Maghera Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat Hayes at this week's meeting of East Clare representatives, it's been agreed that Waterways Ireland will be invited to attend the next meeting. The HSE has rejected claims of impending cuts to ambulance services in Clare. It follows reports that upcoming roster changes would leave Ennistymon without ambulance cover on Wednesdays, Scariff without cover on Thursdays and Kilrush without an ambulance service on Fridays. In a statement to Clare FM, however the HSE says these are unfunded shifts but will still be covered by the National Ambulance Service, either through overtime or relief personnel. Clare Sinn Féin TD Donna McGettigan insists however that many staff are still concerned.

Data centres may be allowed to locate wherever they want, if they generate as much power as they use. The proposal is part of a decision published by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) in an effort to provide "clarity" for the sector and ensure new data centres don't put pressure on existing electricity supplies. It has also detailed new policies for connecting data centres to the national grid. The energy regulator is proposing the measure to data centres currently use up around 21 per cent of energy which is forecast to reach 30 per cent by 2032. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Scariff based Futureproof Clare spokesperson, Sinéad Sheehan. Photo (c): baranozdemir from Getty Images Signature via Canva
The Garda Commissioner will be invited to a meeting of Clare's elected representatives following a reported surge in crime throughout the county. In one week of January alone, Gardaí appealed for witnesses in relation to burglaries in Ennistymon, Ennis, Sixmilebridge and Scariff, a further vehicle theft in the county town, and an incident where a woman was found with several serious injuries in Corofin. According to the Department of Justice, 288 Gardaí are currently stationed in Clare, the lowest amount on record in eleven years. Clarecastle Sinn Féin Councillor Tommy Guilfoyle has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan the county is severely under resourced.

It is time for the fifth episode of our second season of The Village Tour. With The Village Tour, we here at Morning Focus are aiming to highlight the smaller villages and townlands around the county. By doing this, we hope to showcase their unique character, while also bringing their diversity and individuality to life for you, the listener. In our latest episode of The Village Tour, Alan paid a visit to Scariff.
A Clare MEP believes the Government is putting the cart before the horse by phasing out chimneys in newly-built homes without upgrading the electricity grid. The last week has since thousands of homes and businesses in Clare lose power with the occupants having no way of heating their premises due to the absence of a stove of fireplace. As of this year, the installation of an open fireplace in a new build is prohibited while houses must meet a minimum energy standard to have a stove fitted. Scariff-based Independent MEP Michael McNamara has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons because electricity outages are a reality in Ireland, people should be allowed to have an alternative way of heating their homes.
Hundreds of homes and businesses in East Clare remain without power today following the devastation of Storm Éowyn. Many in the likes of Feakle, Scariff and Tuamgraney lost electricity on Friday morning with some now entering their fifth day of outages. While power had returned to many in Tulla, a transformer fault at 11:30 on Monday morning has resulted in outages for many on the main street and beyond but it's believed power will be restored to the majority of those affected by 9 tonight. One area still grappling with electricity outages is O'Callaghan's Mills where Clare Irish Creamery and Milk Suppliers Association Secretary Martin McMahon resides. Clare FM's Seán Lyons has travelled to his home to get a better understanding of what the ordeal has been like for those in the east of the county... Photo (C):Clare FM
26,000 premises across Clare remain without power as extensive restoration efforts continuing across the county. At the peak of Storm Éowyn, 44,000 premises were left in the dark, with ESB crews able to restore power to 14,000 homes by this morning. Its's hoped that a further 4,000 restorations will take place by nightfall, with customers in Scariff, Kildysart, Ballymaley, Barefield and Corofin expected to see power return this evening. Outages are expected to seen into early next week and have had knock on effects countywide with both water and broadband supply impacted. ESB Technical Manager, Michael Sammin, says the extensive damage caused by the storm has significantly hampered attempts to restore power.

This week, Siobhán told us about a Country Music Weekend in Ennis, Storytelling in Scariff, and Sixmilebridge Folk Club.
