The Mental Game of Musical Theatre

RAYMOND J LEE is currently performing in Sweeeny Todd on Broadway! Ray's career seems to be non-stop on the stage and on TV, commercials and voice overs, yet he somehow balances career with being a husband and father!    Ray reveals his unique journey as a Korean-American pop-voiced theatre actor who refused to be boxed you in. His philosophy? ”Do your thing, and then let them decide where to put you.”  But getting to that mindset was a journey… Was he really supposed to be a doctor? And what exactly is a #TokenCall? Does he actually treat his nerves to a milkshake after an audition?    Ray's refreshing take on having fun and keeping the joy in such a daunting career will help us all. Because, “the more you live… and do the fun things… the more resilience you build up to this career.”  And maybe with Ray's help,  we can “learn to LET THINGS GO - as Elsa said.”   **It should be stated that since recording with Ray, several things have progressed…. The Brittney Musical arrived on Broadway and sadly already closed… we've had advances in casting with Seymour and Elphaba… who knows… maybe Ray is the secret… he speaks things into reality during this podcast.  So listen up… what else might he prophesy?   INSTA: @raymondjlee // Twitter: @raymondjlee https://www.raymondjlee.com Voice over INSTA: @rayleevo  Voice over site: www.rayleevo.com Voice over Twitter @rayleevo ---- FOLLOW / SUBSCRIBE so you never miss an episode!   And PLEASE leave a 5 ⭐️ review if you like this episode!   Positive reviews help make this podcast more visible, more able to help musical theatre performers persevere in their efforts toward achieving their dreams! This episode features discussions about Timothy Huang's American Morning and Jaime Cepero's Francois & The Rebels.  AMERICAN MORNING (by Timothy Huang) - Inspired by an article from the 2009 New York Times, American Morning tells the story of two immigrant cab drivers who share opposite shifts off the same medallion. The two men's fates become intertwined as forced competition drives a wedge between them that culminates in a single desperate act that leaves one dead and the other brutalized. FRANCOIS & THE REBELS (by Jaime Cepero) - Francois and the Rebels is a punk rock telling of the 1791 Haitian Revolution. With a pulsing punk rock score, and a story pulled from historic events full of love, loss, and deception, Francois and the Rebels tells an important and often forgotten black history through the lens of an immersive high energy rock and roll experience. "Forever starts tonight" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 2015's Honeymoon In Vegas on episode five of My Favorite Flop.   ABOUT HONEYMOON IN VEGAS Based on the 1992 movie of the same name, Honeymoon In Vegas tells the story of Jack Singer, a Brooklynite with an extreme fear of marriage, who finally gets up the nerve to ask his girlfriend Betsy to marry him. But when smooth-talking gambler Tommy — looking for a second chance at love — falls head over heels for Betsy, Jack must go to extreme heights to win back the love of his life. The musical features a book by Andrew Bergman (who wrote and directed the original film) with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown. Honeymoon In Vegas held a workshop and backers auditions in October 2011, with T.R. Knight, Mary Faber, and Tony Danza in the leading roles. An expected pre-Broadway tryout in Toronto was scheduled for the following year, but was ultimately cancelled, leaving the show's future in limbo. In September 2013, the show finally premiered to rave reviews at the Paper Mill Playhouse with Rob McClure and Brynn O'Malley replacing T.R. Knight and Mary Faber as Jack and Betsy. The Broadway production opened on January 15, 2015 in the middle of a harsh New York winter. Despite getting nearly unanimous praise from the critics, including a love letter from The New York Times, the show struggled to find an audience and ultimately closed on April 5, after just 93 performances. A national tour, once again starring Tony Danza, was announced to take place in 2016, but never materialized. The London premiere was given by the London Musical Theatre Orchestra conducted by Jason Robert Brown in a semi-staged concert version at the London Palladium on March 12, 2017.   Original Broadway Cast Rob McClure as Jack Singer Brynne O'Malley as Betsy Nolan Nancy Opel as Bea Singer David Josefsberg as Buddy Rocky/Roy Bacon Leslie Donna Flesner and Erica Sweany as Buddy's Showgirls Tony Danza as Tommy Korman Matthew Saldivar as Johnny Sandwich Matt Allen as Hotel Manager Katie Webber as Cranberry Waitress/Sapphire de la Tour George Merrick as Dougie Cataracts/Teihutu Gaelen Gilliland as Joanne Klein Raymond J.
