“Just write a story you want to tell and don't try to write something which you think you can sell to somebody because that way is madness. You have to write what you want to write whether it works or not for other people. But if it's not authentic to you, it's doomed at some point along the road. So stick to your guns!” says award-winning writer, Andrew Bergman about writing your first spec script. The Writers Guild of America East has again partnered with FilmNation and Final Draft for the NY Screenwriting Fellowship that fosters underrepresented New York screenwriters to help get them career mentorships as they navigate their way into the business. On today's episode, I speak to two of the program's mentors, award-winning screenwriter Andrew Bergman, best known for his script Blazing Saddles, and producer Caroline Kaplan, known for the recent Oscar-nominated animated film, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. I also speak to their mentee, Irina Rodriguez about her journey as an emerging writer and what it's like to get guidance from these two accomplished filmmakers. “I have always just felt like mentorship is such a big part of the independent film community and what we all do – it's really such a supportive community in that way,” says producer Caroline Kaplan, adding, “This program is really exciting because of how that they create it, both from an artistic mentorship and sort of a business mentorship so we can holistically help somebody… I think connection and community is what it's all about.” To hear more advice and what Andrew learned from working with director Mel Brooks, listen to the podcast.
On this episode we take a look at Andrew Bergman's The Freshman starring Matthew Broderick and Marlon Brando. The movie also stars Bruno Kirby, Penelope Ann Miller, BD Wong, Maximillian Schell, and Paul Benedict. Support us on Patreon for even more content: www.patreon.com/almostcultclassics

For Video Edition, Please Click and Subscribe Here: https://youtu.be/6vcHvOUB5Tc It was in Michael Stewart and Cy Coleman's musical I Love My Wife (1977) – a satire on wife-swapping – that Gleason made her Broadway debut, playing Monica, for which she won a Theatre World Award. She returned to Broadway in a 1985 revival of Peter Nichols's play Joe Egg. Along with Marlo Thomas and Olympia Dukakis, Gleason was a member of the opening-night cast of Andrew Bergman's comedy Social Security (1986), for which Gleason won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play. Although she had already gained attention and honors for her stage work, her performance as the Baker's Wife in Stephen Sondheim's wry fairy-tale musical Into the Woods (1987) made her a Broadway leading lady. The musical itself won Tonys® for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score, and Gleason earned a Tony® for Best Actress in a Musical. Her singing is preserved on the original Broadway cast recording. In the Thin Man-inspired musical Nick and Nora (1991) by Arthur Laurents, Charles Strouse, and Richard Maltby Jr., Gleason played the leading lady, and in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (2005). A familiar presence in movies and on television, Gleason appeared in two of Woody Allen's films – as Tony Roberts's embarrassed wife in Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) and as Allen's spouse in Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989). In Boogie Nights, she played Mark Wahlberg's abusive mother. On television, she was a regular on the CBS sitcom Love & War as the restaurant waitress Nadine Berkus. Other series in which Gleason appeared regularly are Hello, Larry; Temporarily Yours; Oh Baby; and Bette. She is married to the actor Chris Sarandon.

Nothing says 80's comedy better than 1985's Fletch. Directed by Michael Ritchie and written by Andrew Bergman based on the novels by Gregory McDonald but the movie is all Chevy Chase at his peak. Do the different aliases, one liners and pratfalls hold up in 2021? Does the Harold Faltermeyer score, which sounds eerily like Beverly Hills Cop still resonate? Well, watch and see what the YKY crew think. "Moon River..."
Taylor challenged Chris to watch the cult classic "Fletch," written by Andrew Bergman and directed by Michael Ritchie. The comedy stars Chevy Chase as Irwin M. "Fletch" Fletcher, a newspaper reporter who is hired to off a millionaire with cancer only to be on the run risking his own career when he realizes the man is faking it. The film features Joe Don Baker, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Richard Libertini, Tim Matheson, George Wendt and Geena Davis.
"Forever starts tonight" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 2015's Honeymoon In Vegas on episode five of My Favorite Flop. ABOUT HONEYMOON IN VEGAS Based on the 1992 movie of the same name, Honeymoon In Vegas tells the story of Jack Singer, a Brooklynite with an extreme fear of marriage, who finally gets up the nerve to ask his girlfriend Betsy to marry him. But when smooth-talking gambler Tommy — looking for a second chance at love — falls head over heels for Betsy, Jack must go to extreme heights to win back the love of his life. The musical features a book by Andrew Bergman (who wrote and directed the original film) with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown. Honeymoon In Vegas held a workshop and backers auditions in October 2011, with T.R. Knight, Mary Faber, and Tony Danza in the leading roles. An expected pre-Broadway tryout in Toronto was scheduled for the following year, but was ultimately cancelled, leaving the show's future in limbo. In September 2013, the show finally premiered to rave reviews at the Paper Mill Playhouse with Rob McClure and Brynn O'Malley replacing T.R. Knight and Mary Faber as Jack and Betsy. The Broadway production opened on January 15, 2015 in the middle of a harsh New York winter. Despite getting nearly unanimous praise from the critics, including a love letter from The New York Times, the show struggled to find an audience and ultimately closed on April 5, after just 93 performances. A national tour, once again starring Tony Danza, was announced to take place in 2016, but never materialized. The London premiere was given by the London Musical Theatre Orchestra conducted by Jason Robert Brown in a semi-staged concert version at the London Palladium on March 12, 2017. This week, Nathan and Clint go it alone with our latest pairing of Travolta/Cage goodness — mostly so we didn’t have to make a third person suffer the indignity of White Man’s Burden, a post-Pulp Fiction “racial commentary” in which the race/class divide is reversed and white people are on the lower rung of the totem pole. Here, John Travolta, as a poor construction worker living in the ghetto (sporting a… curious blaccent), decides to kidnap his wealthy employer (Harry Belafonte) to get money and revenge. And yup, it’s about as tone-deaf and clunky as that description implies. Funnily enough, Cage is the steady hand this week, going full Normie for It Could Happen To You, reteaming with Honeymoon in Vegas director Andrew Bergman for a cloying but inoffensive tale of New York’s nicest cop (heh) and a down-on-her-luck waitress (played by Bridget Fonda) who both split a $4 million lottery ticket and fall in love along the way. There’s fame, there’s fortune, there’s Rosie Perez trapped in the greedy-shrew role that would take her a decade to recover from: it’s empty calories, but all in good fun! How do these films compare? Which one moves on to whatever nebulous Round 2 we’re doing of this? Listen on and find out! Le 18 mars sort en salle Filles de joie, un film réalisé par Frédéric Fonteyne et Anne Paulicevich qui porte à l’écran le parcours de trois femmes travailleuses du sexe. Ilana interviewed JASON ROBERT BROWN live on the stage of City Center after the Encore Series Presentation of his song cycle "Songs for a New World" on the day his latest album "How We React and How We Recover" was released. In this intimate conversation Jason talks about being "adopted " by Hal Prince, his longtime collaboration with Daisy Prince, the joy and pain of winning Tony Awards for shows that had closed quickly and how he wrote the title song for his new album on the morning Donald Trump won the election and more.... Jason Robert Brown is the ultimate multi-hyphenate – an equally skilled composer, lyricist, conductor, arranger, orchestrator, director and performer – best known for his dazzling scores to several of the most renowned musicals of his generation, including the generation-defining “The Last Five Years”, his debut song cycle “Songs for a New World”, and the seminal “Parade”, for which he won the 1999 Tony Award for Best Score. JASON ROBERT BROWN has been hailed as “one of Broadway’s smartest and most sophisticated songwriters since Stephen Sondheim” (Philadelphia Inquirer), and his “extraordinary, jubilant theater music” (Chicago Tribune) has been heard all over the world, whether in one of the hundreds of productions of his musicals every year or in his own incendiary live performances. Jason’s score for “The Bridges of Madison County,” a musical adapted with Marsha Norman from the bestselling novel, directed by Bartlett Sher and starring Kelli O’Hara and Steven Pasquale, received two Tony Awards (for Best Score and Orchestrations). “Honeymoon In Vegas,” based on Andrew Bergman’s film, opened on Broadway in 2015 following a triumphant production at Paper Mill Playhouse. His major musicals as composer and lyricist include: “13”, written with Robert Horn and Dan Elish, which began its life in Los Angeles in 2007 and opened on Broadway in 2008; “The Last Five Years”, which was cited as one of Time Magazine’s 10 Best of 2001 and won Drama Desk Awards for Best Music and Best Lyrics; “Parade,” written with Alfred Uhry and directed by Harold Prince, which premiered at Lincoln Center Theatre in 1998, and subsequently won both the Drama Desk and New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards for Best New Musical, as well as garnering Jason the Tony Award for Original Score; and “Songs for a New World,” a theatrical song cycle directed by Daisy Prince, which played Off-Broadway in 1995, and has since been seen in hundreds of productions around the world. As a soloist or with his band The Caucasian Rhythm Kings, Jason has performed sold-out concerts around the world. His newest collection, “How We React and How We Recover”, was released in June 2018 on Ghostlight Records. His previous solo album, “Wearing Someone Else’s Clothes”, was named one of Amazon.com’s best of 2005, and is available from Sh-K-Boom Records. For the new musical “Prince of Broadway,” a celebration of the career of Harold Prince, Jason was the musical supervisor and arranger. Other recent New York credits as conductor and arranger include “Urban Cowboy the Musical” on Broadway; Oliver Goldstick’s play, “Dinah Was,” directed by David Petrarca, at the Gramercy Theatre and on national tour; and William Finn’s “A New Brain,” directed by Graciela Daniele, at Lincoln Center Theater. Jason has conducted and created arrangements and orchestrations for Liza Minnelli, John Pizzarelli, Tovah Feldshuh, and Laurie Beechman, among many others. Jason studied composition at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., with Samuel Adler, Christopher Rouse, and Joseph Schwantner. He lives with his wife, composer Georgia Stitt, and their daughters in New York City. Jason is a proud member of the Dramatists Guild and the American Federation of Musicians Local 802. Frank Vincent is an acclaimed actor, musician, comedian, author and producer. He was born in North Adams, Massachusetts of first generation Italian-Americans and raised in the Greenville section of Jersey City, New Jersey. Frank's father, an amateur actor, introduced him to show business at an early age. Frank acted in school plays and studied music at St. Paul's grammar school. He played piano, trumpet and drums, but his love for the drums soon took center stage. Frank spent his adolescence playing and traveling with various national championship drum and bugle corps. This passion evolved into playing in small combos at various nightclubs. He then met record producer Bill Ramal who became his musical mentor. In time, he became a successful recording drummer for such prominent names as Don Costa, Paul Anka, Del Shannon, Trini Lopez and the Belmonts. He found himself playing 5-6 nights a week and recording 3-4 days a week. His insatiable desire for performing soon came to the forefront and his drum playing became secondary. At this pace, he developed a stage personality and learned the meaning of comedic timing and discipline, which would soon lend itself to his acting career. In 1975, Frank made his feature film acting debut in Ralph DeVito's "Death Collector". Martin Scorsese saw his work and cast him in the 1980 Academy Award-nominated film of the decade, "Raging Bull"... From that point until the present day, Frank has appeared in numerous television shows, music videos and over fifty feature films. Frank has demonstrated the ultimate degree of versatility as an actor from his Raging Bull's arrogant "Salvi", to his Do The Right Thing's soaking wet "Charlie", Jungle Fevers racist "Mike Tucci", Casino's suave "Frankie Marino" and his "Go home and get your shine box" Goodfella "Billy Batts"... Frank has worked with some of the greatest directors of our time, notably Martin Scorsese, Brian De Palma, Spike Lee, John Sayles, Andrew Bergman and Sydney Lumet... He has acted with such greats as Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, Richard Dreyfuss, Anthony Quinn, Sharon Stone, Adrien Brody and Sylvester Stallone, among others... His voice is featured in the multi-million dollar PlayStation game series Grand Theft Auto as "Don Salvatore Leone" as well as in DreamWorks' hit animated film "Shark Tale"... Frank is also the spokesperson for "Permanent TSB," one of the largest banks in Ireland... In addition, his career has taken him from recording with great musical legends to working on music videos with such names as Bruce Hornsby, Hype Williams, Nas, DMX, Method Man and T-Boz. Most recently, Frank starred as feared New York mob boss "Phil Leotardo" on HBO's epic series The Sopranos. Leotardo's simmering vendetta with "Tony Soprano" brought exhilarating excitement to millions of viewers week-after-week... Frank also penned a top-selling book entitled, "A Guy's Guide to Being A Man's Man," which was published by Penguin Putnam. GQ Magazine said, "It's awesome!"... Frank also recently starred as the lead in the upcoming movie, "Chicago Overcoat". Fans are sure to be pleased with Frank's riveting performance as an aging hit man who comes back for one last score. Over the years, Frank has received many awards for his various achievements on and off the screen. In 2002, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Back East Picture Show at the Hoboken Film Festival. That same year he received the Italian-American Entertainer of the Year Award presented by the Italian Tribune. In 2005, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Garden State Film Festival. In 2006, Frank received the Honorary Branford Fellow from Branford College, Yale University. That same year he received a Best Supporting Actor Award for the film "Remedy" at the International Film and Screenplay Festival. Frank was a cast member when The Sopranos received the Emmy Award in 2007. In 2008, Frank received the coveted SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for The Sopranos. Frank currently resides in New Jersey and Florida, and has many film and television projects in the works.
