For this episode we go all in with most of the staff for our best of 2020 picks. We hit the high notes of what tickled our fancies for the year that was a shitstorm and even welcomed in a new member to the family. So, buckle up for an epic episode that has a wealth of stuff you may have missed and be sure to take notes, artists we mention need your support so open up those wallets and purses.Needless to say, 2020 was a wasteland of a year but it drove metal to be an epic beast throughout its twelve months of existence. As always, Buke pilots this episode with Charles, Angela, Ian, Vincent, Heracat, and new member Didrik who all cover some of their favorites from the year. Discussions range from the best metal had to offer as well as Christmas traditions on the US side as well as the Canadian side, a brief primer on Didrik's metal background, pandemic woes, and the Slay At Home series and many other avenues our staff sought live entertainment in 2020. Settle in and enjoy some fireside conversation on what 2020 had to offer and we'll be seeing you in 2021.9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

FIFTY EPISODES! HOLY CRAP! I wish we could say we had something special planned for this milestone, but nope...it's just another round of the Nine Circles Audio Thing. The gang gets together for July's Album of the Month: the blistering power metal opus Let There Be Nothing by USPM masters Judicator. Buke managed to wrangle Ian, Angela, Vince, and - in a rare sighting - DAN! Who incidentally had the pick for the month! As Buke points out, this might be the first time a power metal got picked for AOTM, and it's been a long time coming. Though your humble editor didn't get a chance to join in the audio antics, he did write a rather glowing review of the record you can read here. The gang discusses their experiences with the genre, European versus American power metal, the boost in sonics now that they've moved to Prosthetic Records, and how Judicator continues to crush it in the vocal and guitar solo department. All that and a "what else did we dig?" in July featuring copious amounts of praise for new label mates Rebel Wizard, among others. There's no better socially distant pastime than getting your mask and headphones on and jumping in on the antics, so let's go! 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

Heavy Metal History: The Podcast

Welcome to this weeks first "lost" (and now found) episode of Heavy Metal History. This episode was recorded with the mysterious "NKSV" the Aussie mastermind behind Rebel Wizard. He is a musical wizard of epic proportions behind the guitar casting magic wizard riffs from his axe. "NKSV" never did interviews before this and I was really bummed when I lost the episode and I'm glad I was able to find it and finally release it for everyone to hear! Rebel Wizard no longer has any social media. This week we speak with Aborted vocalist Sven de Caluwé about the band's new album TerrorVision, including how the decision came about to name it after the '80s thriller, how awful that film was, how the title isn't a direct reference to the movie but to the state of the world today and the cheap scare tactics modern-day horror films utilize. We also discuss how people often forget that metal is supposed to be fun, how modern technology can cover up mistakes and the negatives that brings, how Sven has always been a big sucker for artwork, which recent band Aborted toured with whose audience did not receive them well, his feelings about returning to perform at the Bataclan in Paris after the tragedy at the Eagles of Death Metal concert, and which children's film would make a great concept for a death metal album. Petar, Brandon, and Jozalyn introduce a new school for air musicians, discuss Glen Benton vs. Mormons, the "bad vibes" Ozzy Osbourne got from Black Sabbath, how we would like to see Ozzy go out, and the Rebel Wizard shirt Jozalyn must own. What we lack in brevity and co-hosts for this episode, we make up for in epic content! Jez has gone AWOL for an episode so this one is just Gary Grim and Tain talking nonsense (with some metal in there) like the old school episodes of the podcast. You know, before anyone listened to us! New releases by Behemoth, Blacklab, Carnation, Convulsing, Dee Snider, Doro, Gourmand, High on Fire, Lucifer, Obscura, Rebel Wizard, Unearthly Trance, Yawning Man and Zevious are discussed. We interview Zac and Phil from Sydney thrashers Reaver about their origins ad the journey to their debut self titled EP which is out now. Then we deep dive into the legacy of the legendary band Manilla Road where we speak about Mark "The Shark" Shelton (R.I.P.) and the epic metal found on the band's sprawling discography. There is even a statment sent to us by way of audio file by Fenriz himself (Darkthrone, Isengard, Storm, Valhall, Eibon et al) where he reveals how he discovered Manilla Road. This is not one to be missed! Get listening. DTABM theme song by Stephen "Smithy" Layzell. Background music by the bands mentioned above. As an elderly man, Gary Grim is visited by two writers who are compiling the story of his life. However, rather than learning about his beginnings, his struggles and his inevitable decline, these writers only seem to be interested in one particular shocking episode of the DTABM podcast... this episode. Old man Grim tells the writers the story of how the DTABM crew spoke about albums released around the time of the episode recording by bands such as Vein, Baptists, the Night Flight Orchestra, Uada, Dopethrone, Morag Tong, Oak, Ovate, Gruesome, Nocturnal Graves, Sleepwalkers, The Konsortium, Craft, and a then yet to be released Rebel Wizard album. He recalls how the lads went on to "break the silence" over not one but two albums by the bands Immortal and Deafheaven. The tales continues with a retelling of a "terrible album debate", a segment the guys had not come up with a catchy title for at the time, with the album St Anger by Metallica getting the DTABM treatment. Then Grim finally gets to the ending of the episode and the big reveal that came with it. What could have happened? What earth shattering news will be revealed? Could this spell the end of the Deaf To All But Metal podcast? (Probably not, you're not that lucky.) Tune in to find out! THE NEW AND IMPROVED DTABM PODCAST! The lads have tightened up the format of the show and have vastly improved the structure even though it sent Gary Grim mad doing so. The guys talk about new releases by Abigor, Watain, Tribulation, Fu Manchu, Weedpecker, Monolithe, Dirty Pagans and Rebel Wizard. They break the silence over their thoughts on the new Portal album, Ion. There is a rousing debate as the DTABM boys get stuck into the new Machine head album. You can hear EXCLUSIVE metal facts you won't hear anywhere else. There are still bad jokes and naff skits so not everything has been improved. Enjoy! This episode, Tain couldn't escape from the echo chamber located in the DTABM studios and had to subsist for the evening on a diet of desiccated cockroach shells and Gary's flaky skin leavings. Aside from that though, Gary apologised to his future self for where he's ended up in life via hidden messages littered throughout the internet like some kind of terribly budget version of Inception. Once our brave heroes escape these conundrums, we listened to some killer new tracks from Rebel Wizard, Gilded Lily, Hellbringer, Spirit Adrift, Mizmor, Inquisition and of course Nucleust - the latter of whom we have an interview with as well! Trying to finish up this episode before heading to bed (which tends to be a theme, as I try to get these out before I hit the hay). Decided to start this episode with some of the more epic tracks and mix things up a bit. We have the first two tracks from Aktarum's Game of Trolls, followed by a soaring track from Skyforest. Then we finish off the set with the epical tale of Daedalus and his ingenious wings which doomed his son when the son flew too close to the sun. And then four crushing tracks by Chamber of Rotrute, Depths of Black, Rebel Wizard and Sysmo Finish off the second act. And you won't want to miss the post-metal track by Wreck and Reference that sounds both unique and familiar and downright good. It's a show you won't want to miss!
