This week we bring you another installment in the series of Jarvis Leatherby interviews with contemporaries, peers, influences, and friends. Our subjects this week are Adam Neal and Stacey Savage, founding members of occult Kentucky true metal stalwarts Savage Master. In this wide-ranging conversation, Jarvis, Adam and Stacey cover the origins of the band, the evolution of the underground traditional heavy metal scene in the United States, the writing and recording processes, band relationships, the fallacies of the glamorous rock'n'roll lifestyle mythos, and the challenges of putting on your best show in less-than-ideal circumstances. Warbringer frontman John Kevill is once again back on the show! We open the discussion on his take on the world we currently live in, how his optimism of seeing positive change in his lifetime has waned in recent times, and how that mindset inspired the song “A Better World”. We also talk about how many of the songs on the new album are based on his experiences, how modern art has a low level of mind control that affects our decision making, how important the next year is for Warbringer, and the toxic mix many artists feel when they are successful in music but it doesn't translate into financial security. Petar and Brandon discuss the “Cat Bath Water” merchandise release by Belushi Speed Ball, MTV Unplugged streaming now on Paramount+ and us remembering those episodes in real time, Buckcherry's Josh Todd believing in rock n roll, and some Hatebreed drama surrounded the exit of Chris Beattie. Join John and I as we kick things off discussing how intentional the release date of the bands upcoming release, Wraith and Ruin coming out March 14th via Napalm Records, was. From there we take a bit of a deep dive into the lyrical content of the album, how a lot of it touches on things that continuously happen over the course of our existence, but we seemingly don't learn from our past mistakes. John talks about the struggles of putting out one of the groups most acclaimed albums and feeling that the band was on the verge of something big, only to have the pandemic take it all away, and how that really drove him to really up the ante lyrically on this album. Welcome back metalheads to another episode of the great metal debate podcast. It's your man Xander again and today the Swedish thrash metal band Mezzrow has finally released their second album titled Summon Thy Demons. This long awaited release on Fireflash Records has much better production quality and it is instantly noticeable during the first song "King of the Infinite Void". Gone are the days of the drumming sounding like someone slapping their hands on a countertop and in with the crisp audio of Jon Skare pounding the skins. It is worth noting that this band has zero original members as they have all come and gone over the years. This fresh line-up seems to truly capture lightning in a bottle. As someone who has never been crazy about the style of thrash metal, I'm glad that this new album seems to be one of the few I personally enjoy. Summon Thy Demons has a real modern Havok and Warbringer-esq vibe about them. They are fast, loud and aggressive while keeping that classic Sodom bravado especially with front man Uffe Pettersson's vocal delivery. Another thing that I like about his style is that I can hear every single word that he says in every song making the entire album one big sing-along. The second song "Through The Eyes of the Ancient Gods" is a thrashing good time with great overall musicianship and catchy lyrics. And then we have the album title track coming in softly with a faded out choir before annihilating your eardrums with the menacing words that feels like venom being spat in your face. The next song on the album "What Is Dead May Never Die" is a real headbanger thanks to guitarists Magnus Soderman and Ronnie Bjornstrum with their amazing riffs. The song is quite an earworm too. I had this song stuck in my head for a while after hearing it for the first time. The beginning of the song "De Mysteriis Inmortui" has an old school 1980s era Metallica sound to the violent heavy metal riff. Personally I refer to this song as "Summon The Dead" because of the gang vocals towards the end chanting these words. I love how before this next song fades in, we hear a sonar beeping from a submarine. It's very fitting since the song is titled "Beneath The Sea of Silence" which has yet another kick ass opening guitar riff. I can only imagine what the future mosh pits for this song would look like. Hopefully Mezzrow can do a U.S. tour with another big thrash metal act sometime next year. The guitar solo in this song makes me want to jump straight into a circle pit. When a song starts up with a nuclear test site siren, you know you're in for a hell of a ride. This is of course, is the song "On Earth As In Hell" which gives off all the negative energy that you'd expect from this song title. I love that bass guitar line in the middle of the track which eventually returns to the main guitar groove. I can always appreciate an acoustic guitar in heavy music especially when it serves as a calm way to ease listers into a very modern Kreator sound guitar riff. That's what I enjoy most about the song "Blackness Fell Upon The World". It's a killer song that only further compliments the already badass album. For some reason when the vocals and bass sections come up, "Dark Spirit Rising" and "The End of Everything" both are packed with enough adrenaline to close out this long awaited thrasher. Despite Mezzrow being a band for over 3 decades, I feel like they have been reborn from the ashes like a fiery Phoenix given their circumstances. I can't find any real flaws with Summon Thy Demons and it is certainly superior to most thrash metal that gets released these days. If you are a thrasher, there is a great chance you'll love these guys. I'm going to give this album a 7 out of 10. You can show your support by buying their merch from their website at fireflashrecords.com

Meet us in the pit this week for a hella good time! We're getting our aggression by revisiting the starting point of Kevin's music fandom. The thrash, crossover, and speed metal movement of the 80s spawned his love of all things rock n' punk n' metal. We will not be covering the Big 4 of Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax; but if you love them, then you will love this bunch. How will Robert react to one of our heaviest episodes of all time??? Will he be metal thrashing mad or just plain mad?!?!What is it that we do here at InObscuria? We exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode, we explore all things mosh-worthy! This is real metal people. This week we begin our deep dive into "The Last Day," the new Night Demon single released as part of the Decibel Magazine Flexidisc Series in July 2022. "The Last Day" has been hailed as "Vysteria pt. 2" and vies for the title of thrashiest Night Demon song ever. In this episode, we dig into the origins of the song, beginning with a riff that Armand had during the writing of the third full-length Night Demon studio album. The guys explain why "The Last Day" did not fit within the concept of the album, why the song was left to die on the vine, and how it came to be resuscitated in December 2021 following Night Demon's appearance at the Decibel Metal and Beer Festival in Los Angeles, California. You will hear multiple demos tracing the song's wild evolution from humble beginnings to its finished form. Playing Saturday, day 3 of Blue Ridge Rock Fest, WOR! WoR is a groove metal band from Raleigh, North Carolina consisting of vocalist Bobby Demoss, guitarists Ben Kaiser and David Nisoff, bassist Phillip Funderburk, and drummer Dylan Jenkins. WoR was founded in 2018 by guitarist Ben Kaiser who at the time was finishing his college football career playing offensive line at NC State. WoR's music combines aggressive riffs, harmonic leads, and tasteful breakdowns with infectious anti-authoritarian lyics. Demoss' unique screaming style combined with the aggressive guitar work and a dynamic rhythm section shape WoR's definitive sound. By the spring of 2019, WoR had begun to debut their music at live shows throughout the southeast region of the United States playing with the likes of Upon A Burning Body, Atilla, and Warbringer just to name a few. In August of 2020, WoR released their debut album “Prisoners” via Bungalo Records/Universal Music Group. In 2021 and 2022, WoR has extensive tour dates scheduled to support “Prisoners” in addition to writing and recording their second album. We are joined with CEO of Bandzoogle, Stacey Bedford! After working at Bandzoogle for 11 years, Stacey was named CEO of the music website platform in 2018. She then received the title of Digital Power Player by Billboard Magazine the following year. Bandzoogle actively serves 60,000 artists and labels like Sargent House, from garage band to established artists like Warbringer, WOLFMOTHER, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, and Quiet Riot. The Set Up podcast listeners can go to Bandzoogle.com to try it free for 30 days, and use the promo code “thesetup” to get 15% off the first year of any subscription. -- Your artist website is the perfect space for meet-and-greets without the noise of ads or distractions that social media creates. It's a space belonging to you alone, that you can curate as the hub for your online presence as a musician. If someone sees your video on YouTube or hears your music on Spotify, they Google you and your website comes up. From there, you can capture their attention and engage them with your music and your brand. Artists tend to undervalue the power of websites just as much as mailing lists. Facebook is not a website. Bandcamp is not a website. Fans want a one-stop shop where they can listen to your music, watch your videos, learn about upcoming shows, and find out more about you. The easier it is to find you, the easier it is to follow you. Creating and maintaining a proper website isn't just for your fans, either. Talent buyers, music journalists, and all sorts of industry professionals are more biased towards artists who represent themselves well with a professional-looking online presence. -- Today, we are discussing websites and why artists need them. -- Intro to Bandzoogle Purpose of a Website How to Set Up Your Website Website Insights to Understand Your Fans Monetization & Ecommerce Tools Driving Traffic to Your Website (connect to SEO and Email Marketing and EPK) Creating a Mailing List The #1 Mistake -- “A website is really where the rubber meets the road for artists. You control the experience, you capture the data, you own the fan list. “ -- If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? It takes less than 30 seconds, and it really makes a difference in helping to convince hard-to-get guests.
