In the late 1980s, the San Francisco Bay Area was the undisputed global epicenter of thrash metal. But deep within the underground, a new generation of metalheads were brewing something far more extreme. In this episode of Riff Worship, we are diving headfirst into the blood, guts, and history behind one of death metal's foundational releases: Autopsy's 1989 debut album, Severed Survival!Join us this week as we break down:How a teenage Chris Reifert crossed paths with Chuck Schuldiner to help create Death's massively influential debut, Scream Bloody Gore, before forming Autopsy. How half the budget for Severed Survival “went up in smoke,” leaving the band just a few days to record with producer John Marshall (Blind Illusion, Metal Church) at Starlight Sound. How Sadus bassist Steve Di Giorgio stepped in at the last minute to deliver the album's devastating, pummeling bass lines. The direct horror influences behind the tracks, including Stephen King's short story Survivor Type, Tim Ritter's Truth or Dare?, and George A. Romero's Creepshow. The story behind Kent Mathieu's original Hellraiser-inspired cover art and Kev Walker's “censored” alternate zombie surgical scene. How Jeff Walker of Carcass helped secure Autopsy a home on Peaceville Records, inadvertently paving the way for legendary labelmates like Paradise Lost, Darkthrone, and At the Gates. From the unrelenting brutality of “Charred Remains” to the sludgy, doom-inspired riffs of “Embalmed,” join us as we celebrate the raw, unfiltered madness that helped kickstart the genre!Recommendations:Abscess / Population ReductionSore Throat - Unhindered by TalentPaul 'Hammy' Halmshaw - Peaceville LifeMastodon - Your Ghost AgainImmolation - DescentEmma Ruth Rundle - These Killing TimesFollow Riff WorshipInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/riffworshippod/Twitter: https://x.com/RiffWorshipPodYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@RiffWorshipPodCheck out our Official Playlists:Riffs on Repeat (Spotify)Riffs on Repeat (YouTube Music)Hits from the Crypt (Apple)
Thomas Eriksen — the man behind Norway's Mork, one of black metal's most authentic and relentlessly evolving solo projects — pulls into the Krazy Train Eriksen breaks down "Ødelagt" — Norwegian for "broken" — a track inspired by brutalist architecture, vast emptiness, and a life built on a false facade, and previews Monolitt, Mork's eighth studio album dropping June 19th on Peaceville Records — a signing that came with the backing of Darkthrone members and the kind of underground credibility that can't be bought. He walks through Mork's evolution across eight albums, the origin of the name and logo, and what it actually looks like to build a black metal career from Norway to the stages of Psycho Las Vegas, California Death Fest, and Baltimore — funded in part by Norwegian government artist grants that most American musicians don't even know exist.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this week's episode of Into The Necrosphere, I welcome Gildas Le Pape of Via Doloris to the podcast for the first time to discuss the band's blistering debut album, Guerre Et Paix. We dive deep into the writing and creation of the record, including how Gildas linked up with the legendary Frost to perform drums on the album. We also discuss Gildas' stint as guitarist for Satyricon, what he learned from the experience, and his musical pursuits outside of black metal. Then, on the Weekly News Rant, the sinister minister himself, Karl Hikara, returns to help me round up the latest singles from Haemoth, Darkthrone, Frozen Soul, Enevelde and more for judgment. We also rank our favourite Satyricon albums, Karl delivers his own “bad metal take,” and we administer a well-earned tag-team swirly to a thoroughly deserving gaggle of online nitwits. - I LA er Rage Against The Machines single “Killing In The Name of” selve kernen af en rasende rap metal-revolution, mens Bodycount heller ikke lægger fingre imellem på deres debutalbum. - Nirvanas Dave Grohl, Kurt Cobain og Alice in Chains-sanger Layne Staley dyrker danske Mercyful Fate i stor stil. - Nye bands med nye tilgange til (hård) rockmusik: The Smashing Pumpkins, Mudhoney og Temple of the Dog. Hellripper mastermind, James McBain, joins me on the show this week to chart the band's evolution from a one-man black/speed metal assault to one of the most electrifying forces in the underground. We get into his songwriting process, the evolution of the Hellripper sound, and how he overcame performance anxiety to emerge as one of metal's most commanding frontmen. Original Airdate 11/09/2016The boys are back to review Arctic Thunder by Darkthrone! Arctic Thunder is the sixteenth studio album by Norwegian band Darkthrone. It was released on 14 October 2016 via Peaceville Records. The first single from this album was "Tundra Leech". The album marks a return to the band's familiar black metal style, in lieu of the crust punk-influenced sound present on many of their more recent albums. The album is named after a Norwegian thrash/heavy metal band, active from 1985 to 1989.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Chicago-based EVIDENCE OF A STRUGGLE consist of multi-instrumentalist REV. BILLY SIMMONS and an evolving group of artists and musicians that began in 2020 creating a lush, cinematic, beautiful and sometimes chaotic compositions. Rev Billy Simmons began working with renowned sound engineer Sanford Parker (Voivod, Russian Circles, Yob, Eyehategod, Wovenhand, Darkthrone, Youth Code, Pelican) who helped produce, record and master the final versions of the songs in his 13- track eponymous album which was released in June 2023. The album is complemented by a multi-chapter audio-visual storybook, created by Chicago artist John Air, who has been involved with the project since the outset- creating videos, album covers and accompanying visuals for live performances. With a backstory involving collaborations with RCA recording artist Ke and various artist on major labels like RCA, Touch and Go, BMG and Universal, it is no surprise that Evidence of a Struggle would evolve. In 2023 Matt Walker (of1000faces, Smashing Pumpkins, Morrissey, Garbage, Filter) joined the project, playing drums and helping with production with Matt's brother Solomon Walker (Morrissey, Bryan Adams, Eastern Shadows, Year of The Rabbit) and Alan Berliant (Chris Connelly, Mavis Staples, Saint Asonia ) also on bass. Rev Billy also owns Rev Billy's Chop Shop, also known as an inclusive, creative space, hosting new artists' work bimonthly and declared by Chicago Reader as the city's best gallery in 2019. Black metal? Isn't that the genre for nazi edgelords with all the Gene Simmons makeup? Well that's where you're wrong kiddo: Bill Peel has written the definitive guide to how it's surprisngly leftist. Music by Darkthrone and Altar of Plagues.
Transcendence. A word that's seemingly being redefined out in the hills of Oslo, Norway by a talented individual known as Roman V. We get a chance to speak with Roman about his upbringing and influences that began with him as a fan of literature. In his early days as a poet, it didn't stop there, as his side music project, appropriately titled Bizarrekult, has more than brought out the best in him. He has grasped and transcended the sound of black metal, while adding a unique layer that makes him stand out from the rest. Other artists such as Bathory, Immortal, and Darkthrone to name a few have established their place in the realm; Roman and Bizarrekult are next up, and the outcome does not disappoint in the slightest with the latest album, “Den Tapte Krigen,” roughly translated from Norwegian as “The Lost War.” Roman takes us through this unique journey on the timeline of Bizarrekult, the signing with Season Of Mist, and what composing this music means to him. A big shoutout goes to his wife and his daughter, who are driving forces that have pushed him to become the man he is today. There is an art-form in what Roman conveys, so you'll want to tune in to this interview to find out more than just what's on the surface here. Listen now and be sure to buy and stream Bizarrekult's new masterpiece, “Den Tapte Krigen,” out now worldwide via Season Of Mist Records.Stay connected with Bizarrekult, visit: https://linktr.ee/bizarrekult, https://www.facebook.com/bizarrekult/ and https://www.instagram.com/bizarrekvlt/Stay connected with IUF, visit: https://interviewunderfire.com/
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 20, 2023 is: prerogative prih-RAH-guh-tiv noun Prerogative means “right or privilege,” and especially refers to a special right or privilege that some people have. // If you'd rather sell the tickets than use them, that's your prerogative. See the entry > Examples: “The stakes never feel particularly high on Darkthrone albums anymore, which usually works in the band's favor. They release a ton of music, and almost all of it is at least pretty good. Nocturno Culto and Fenriz have already pushed each other to peaks that few others have scaled, and if they now tend to sound more like a couple of aging pals jamming together, that's their prerogative.” — Brad Sanders, Pitchfork, 3 Nov. 2022 Did you know? In ancient Rome, voting at legal assemblies was done by group, with the majority in a group determining the vote. The group chosen to vote first on an issue was called the praerogātīva, a word rooted in Latin rogāre, “to ask; to ask an assembly for a decision.” When English adopted prerogative from Latin, via Anglo-French, in the 15th century, it took only the idea of the privilege the ancient Roman voting group enjoyed; the English word referred then, as it also does now, to an exclusive or special right, power, or privilege. Often such a prerogative is tied to an office, official body, or nation, but as Bobby Brown reminded us in his 1988 song “My Prerogative,” the right to live as you like can also be referred to as a prerogative.
Tonight It's a World We Bury explores a range of tendencies central to black metal and uncovers their potential as critiques of capitalism.Tonight It's a World We Bury is a radical re-writing of the history and politics of black metal music.Challenging the commonly-held perception that black metal is a genre of the right — full of wannabe Vikings, Nazis, skinheads and other unsavoury characters — Tonight It's a World We Bury looks at an array of black metal artists to re-affirm the genre as radically anticapitalist, revolutionary and left-wing.Utilizing an eclectic range of black metal bands, including Darkthrone, Burzum, Liturgy and Deathspell Omega, and taking in the works of Marx, Nietzsche, Deleuze and more, Tonight It's a World We Bury is a book on black metal like no other.Support Zer0 Books on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/zerobooksSubscribe: http://bit.ly/SubZeroBooksFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ZeroBooks/Twitter: https://twitter.com/zer0booksBuy the book: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/725697/tonight-its-a-world-we-bury-by-bill-peel/Dawn Rayd: https://lnk.to/DawnRaydSupport the podcast:Linktree: https://linktr.ee/acidhorizonAcid Horizon on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acidhorizonpodcastZer0 Books and Repeater Media Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/zer0repeaterMerch: http://www.crit-drip.comOrder 'The Philosopher's Tarot': https://repeaterbooks.com/product/the-philosophers-tarot/Subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/169wvvhiHappy Hour at Hippel's (Adam's blog): https://happyhourathippels.wordpress.comRevolting Bodies (Will's Blog): https://revoltingbodies.comSplit Infinities (Craig's Substack): https://splitinfinities.substack.com/Music: https://sereptie.bandcamp.com/ and https://thecominginsurrection.bandcamp.com/Support the show

This week on The MetalSucks Podcast, we've got the one and only Devin Townsend back on the show! This time around, we sat down to discuss his recent effort to use social media to reach out to fans to check in on them, the reality of the modern economy for a mid-level touring band, and how sometimes his creative compulsions go against his fanbase. Our discussion also veers into other directions like what his thoughts are on embracing a section of his audience that desires brutal music, the need in our genre to categorize artists and albums, and recognizing that there is a fracture that needs to be healed for us as a collective. In the show, Petar and Brandon also discuss Darkthrone's comments that they'd rather never play live than be rich, Metallica being the worst band of all time according to a pop singer, and Rob Halford watching the Glam metal movement as a closeted gay man.
