Ned joins us for a natter this week. One of the strongest climbers the UK has ever produced but he's tried his very best to keep a low profile. If he was a musician his music probably wouldn't be on spotify and only available via cassette. He's responsible for strengthening millions of meat hooks and his products quite likely sit above a doorframe in your house. His personal climbing has been put on the backburner a tad in recent years, as he's become a Dad and he's also supporting his wife Shauna to get a deserved stab at the rocks after having spent years on the comp circuit. It's a pretty standard relaxed chat, but there's some nice stuff in there. If you're enjoying the podcast and would like to support us : https://www.patreon.com/user?u=70353823Support the show

Steve is the founder of Climb Strong. He's a climber for more than 30 years, and established over 300 new routes across the globe, from big wall free climbs to 25-foot sport routes on his home crags near Lander, Wyoming. An exercise science graduate of the University of Wyoming, Steve has been studying and experimenting with climbing training methods since his teens. After spending a few years as a full-time climber, Steve opened Elemental Performance + Fitness in 2002. Elemental is a full-service gym in Lander, but was built around the training needs of high-level climbers. We love Steve's ability to boil down the science to lay terms and give practical advice on how to apply it in life. To us, that's the hallmark of a great coach.Steve's new book Mettle was the catalyst for this chat. The book digs into the philosophical side of climbing and those softer skills which are so easily forgotten or overshadowed by going hard on strength. We dive into :Our approach to goals and the journey to themOpenness to new ideasThe evolution of training protocols and the big mistake many people make in their endurance training Also, no hangs. Are they legit. What are they even?We have Steve's new book in stock at baffledays.com.au (link in the show notes) along with a couple of Steve's other awesome books. Unstoppable Force and Logical Progression 2. We also have copies of The Hard Truth by Kris Hampton aka Power Company Climbing and we also have Beastmaking – a fingers first approach to becoming a better climber. A book written by Mr Beastmaker himself, Ned Feehally one of the co founders of Beastmaker. It's an absolute ripper.I've also been working on a little side project product which is now live on the store as well. Take a look and if you think it's something which may be useful for you or someone you know. I think they're pretty cool and an environmentally friendly alternative to the single use versions of what's already out there. Grab one or a couple and let me know what you think. Could be an easy Christmas gift? Far out, we are already saying that word.Registration is now open for the Performance Climb Coach course. Courses content will go live on 14th November and you'll have access to all the courses until 14th May 2023. Seriously, it's so worth it. Ned Feehally is one of the few climbers ever to have flashed V14 (8B+). He is also one of the founders of Beastmaker, a U.K. climbing company that ushered in an era of fine wood hangboards that you just don't mind grabbing cause they're just so cushy. His new book is ”Beastmaking: A fingers-first approach to becoming a better climber,” and is a comprehensive look at training techniques that anyone can use. We discuss training philosophy with Ned, the rise of guru-dom in the training world and the why training has gotten too complicated for its own good. But first, we attempt to make this podcast a true-crime pod by speculating on whodunnit with regards to the recent vandalism of the Big Bend boulders outside of Moab, Utah. Moab uber-local Lisa Hathaway gives us a first-hand report on GreaseGate as we probe the scene of the crime. Last but never least, Chris Parker returns to the Final Bit with a new song called Passing Through about ultra-runner Joe Grant's Colorado feats of glory. The song will officially debut in vinyl alongside an “immersive experience” at the Five Point Film festival this spring. Join Montag, Chop-Top, and Dreadbull as they hang out with the driving force behind Haunt and Beastmaker, Trevor William Church, and talk all things music, horror, and the creative process.
Through his projects, Haunt and Beastmaker, and intense work ethic, Trevor Church has become a household name for heavy metal fans and enthusiasts. Particularly if Bandcamp is part of said fans' daily visits. The discography between just these two projects is staggering and the speed in which he releases new music is astounding. With new album Unplugged Vol. 1, Trevor shows a side we haven't heard and yet again knocks it out of the park just as he has with every other album under his belt. The man is an anomaly to be blunt, and the kind we rarely see these days. His love of all things rock and metal, no matter the timeframe, shines through in everything he does and is part of why his fanbase has grown to epic proportions. Buke had the chance to chat with Trevor about Unplugged Vol. 1, how it's easier said than done to make an unplugged album, and other landmark unplugged albums through the years. They cover how Trevor is always working and grinding the gears and how he prevents burnout, how instrumental Trevor's dad was in making this particular album and the significance of it being Vol. 1, his family and upbringing in a household with Bill Church who was bassist in Montrose and worked with Van Morrison, to name a few, volatile relationships in rock and metal and how they changed the landscape of music as we know it, and Trevor's label Church Recordings and a Night Demon tie in. They also cover who Trevor's rock and metal idols were, monster trucks and Guitar Center, favorite lyricists and his one biggest musical influence. All this and so much more is covered in this epic length conversation so pull up a chair or a piece of floor and enjoy! 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
Your hosts invite their first ever guest from the metal world: Trevor William Church, founder of California bands Haunt and Beastmaker. Trevor sings, plays every instrument, produces albums, runs an indie record label, and even ships his own merch. He is the true definition of a DIY musician, and one of the champions of a new wave of traditional heavy metal. In this episode, Trevor tells his story about how he found success through self-leadership and following his own vision, how he fell in love with Judas Priest, and why he thinks Priest have held up better than their peers over the years. Oh, and spoiler: he loves Dreamer Deceiver as much as George and Tom do!Check out Haunt's music and merch here:https://hauntthenation.bandcamp.com/Email: metalgodspodcast@gmail.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/metalgodspodcast/Twitter: https://twitter.com/metalgodspodMetal Gods Podcast is part of the Deep Dive Podcast Network. Episode 12…the conclusion of our lengthy interview with the oft-referred to (in this podcast at least) Trevor William Church, the brainchild behind Beastmaker, Haunt, and a bunch of other very cool metal projects.Kicking off with the Merch Table, Jeff shows off a limited Earthless live record, Trevor shows us a MIJ BC Rich that he bought from Russia. Hmmmm. Long story short, he doesn't like it...because he can't "go" on it...needs a painted neck...so he can be gnarly. And them....Trevor shows off 2 of his dad's basses, including the 1957 P-bass his dad used to record Montrose, Van Morrison, and all the Sammy Hagar records. It's beat to shit, but the scars are earned. Then he shows off an early 80s Grover Jackson Electric Church custom Charvel that was made for his dad. Also live bathroom breaks because JD has a small bladder. Also his dad was not a fan of Beastmaker's "Satan shit". He talks about his love of Japanese pedals from the 80s...his board is mostly Orion pedals, but he has 100+ Japanese pedals from the 80s in a display case in his house. We learn about Trevor's distaste for cockroaches, and how Decibel magazine has supported him. We wrap up with some California heavy talk, and Trevor gushes about his buddy Francis Anger Roberts and his many projects (Old Man Wizard, King Gorm, etc.).Haunt:https://hauntthenation.bandcamp.com/Beastmaker:https://beastmaker.bandcamp.com/Magnetic Eye Records Black Sabbath Vol 4 Redux and Best of:https://magneticeyerecords.bandcamp.com/album/volume-4-reduxhttps://magneticeyerecords.bandcamp.com/album/best-of-black-sabbathBandcamp Special Selection - Luke Titushttps://luketitus.bandcamp.com/album/plasmaShit, we're already fans! Episode 11…the episode so big it became 2 episodes. This week, part one of our lengthy interview with the oft-referred to (in this podcast at least) Trevor William Church, the brainchild behind Beastmaker, Haunt, and a bunch of other very cool metal projects. We talk about sparkling water and sparkling weed, how Trevor got started, growing up the son of Electric Bill Church, bass player for Montrose, Sammy Hagar, and more. He then misses an amp delivery (but gets the footswitch at least). “Hey guys…I think a half-stack just arrived at my door”. Trevor got an endorsement from ENGL…and they sent him some goodies. We dig some info out of him on amp setups for recording…great details for superfans. We listened to the first batch of submissions, and we have a side chat about how much info you give out on your Bandcamp page about your music. Should you call your music “mesmerizing” or “experimental”…what if you aren’t? Also, Trevor comes up with a brilliant band name…Surrounded by Cockstones.Haunt: https://hauntthenation.bandcamp.com/Beastmaker:https://beastmaker.bandcamp.com/ Hysteria: https://hysteriaheavymetal.bandcamp.com/ This week’s submissions, part 1!Jaggu (Norway) – The Pithttps://jaggu.bandcamp.com/album/the-pitBloodswamp (London) – Mindful-lesshttps://bloodswampmusic.bandcamp.com/album/daylight-illuminates-a-miserable-worldCokegoat (Chicago) – Rainbow Valley https://cokegoat.bandcamp.com/album/sunshine-tracing-lightWe wrap up with Night Closing in off of Hysteria’s first album (Hysteria is Trevor’s collaboration with Jake Nunn from Hellfire) because it’s rad as hell. Stay tuned next week for part 2…the merch table, my our weird Bandcamp selection, and the last 3 submissions. It’s insane! DOOMED CINEMA Logan's Run (Redux) This is a new tribute to the psychotronic sci-fi classic Logan's Run (1976), directed by Michael Anderson(1920–2018), who started his career early on with a production of George Orwell's 1984. The futuristic score featured in the film was by Jerry Goldsmith. who just a few years earlier had composed the jarring score to Planet of the Apes (1968). The first version of Doomed & Stoned's tribute to Logan's Run originally aired in June of 2017 (a chapter in the ongoing Doomed Cinema series). It was well received, but I thought overly long (I was anxious to showcase a lot of music I thought tied in well with the film). Also, I ended the story prematurely for some reason. For this redux, I've reworked, remixed, and retooled the content to bolster the narrative, pairing it with a power-packed doom metal and stoner rock selection by Beastmaker, Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard, Space Witch and much more. Hope ya dig! p.s. Patrons got access to the show first! Support the program and get perks like this and more! Visit https://patreon.com/doomedandstoned for details. In this episode Amanda Watts and Tom O’Halloran sit down with Lee Cossey, one of the best climbers Australia has ever seen and one of the best coaching minds in the business. We talk about how you can get the most out of your training while climbing gyms are shut and our access to the outdoors is limited. Finger boarding, strength, mindset and technique improvement are all covered here, with practical tips on what you can do from home. Lee Cossey is a physiotherapist and runs, along with his wife Andrea Hah, Move Clinic, a Physio and Exercise Physiology practice in Katoomba, Blue Mountains. His clinical study as a physio teamed with elite level climbing gives him a unique understanding of how to get the most out of every climber. If you want to get in contact with Lee or any of the other climbing physios at Move Clinic, you can reach out via their website here. https://moveclinic.com.au Amanda Watts has been an elite level Australian climber for the past two decades. She is also a sport dietitian and has worked with recreational to elite athletes all over the world. Having lived this life, she knows how to implement important and lasting changes for your health and performance. If you want to get your nutrition and health in tiptop shape, contact Amanda here. https://nutritioncollective.com.au/thrive/ Fingerboard Four finger grip on an edgeThree finger grip on an edge or pocketA heavy hang (can be one arm on jug or big edge if you can) Protocols Lee recommends:If you’re new to finger boarding, even as an experienced climber, Lee suggests starting on a simple repeater workout. This usually looks like 7 seconds hanging, 3 seconds resting, repeated 6 times. This will last 1 minute. You can repeat this two or three times for each grip, keeping in mind your conditioning to this type of exercise. Rest for 2-3 minutes between sets. One set on each grip may be all your body needs to make gains. Take it slow. Training is a months and years progression, not days and weeks. You can also try 3 reps of 10 second hangs, separated by 1 minute between reps. Three hangs is one set, take 2-3 minutes between sets and grips. If you are new to this type of training, take a bigger edge than you think, even a pull up bar or jug is great to begin with. Get used to hanging and going through the process of the exercise. If you have trouble completing a set of hangs, either use a bigger hold or take a small amount of weight off by putting your feet on the ground. TRX/Floor exercises TRX row - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rT7FwxpYSZs TRX or floor push ups - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlUqeytSoxE TRX IYTs – The video shows this exercise being done in a prone position (facing down) this is an advanced variation. Begin by facing the anchor point as you would in the row exercise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzrurtNn9FQ Pull up bars Anything here is going to be good. Lee’s recommendation is progress up to doing 10 chin-ups. Once you can do this add 5% body weight to a harness or backpack. General overall rulesDon’t do the same session more than twice per week.Don’t work max strength in the same body part more than twice in a week.Be aware of what you are conditioned to. Reflect on what you have done in the last month or so. Think of the number of moves you did in that time. It may look something like two trips to the bouldering gym where you did 50 warm up moves, 50 warm down moves and 100 hard moves as the main set. Giving you 200 hard moves, 200 easy moves in the week. Plus you went to the cliff twice a week and climbed 10 easy pitches of 50 moves each. That's another 1000 easy moves. Don’t suddenly start finger boarding heavy 4 days week to try and replicate this. You’ll end up injured! Minimal equipment tipsDrink bottles filled with water are great weights for the fingerboardFill your backpack with the bottles and you have a weight vest. Kids or partners also make good weight vests ;).The underside of a table can supplement as a chin up bar for your inverted rows Video psyche Mellow climbing – the new school strong folk have made a youtube channel of some of the hardest boulders in the world https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5jRwTUqG15l-BcqQHbVFtA Reel Rock – Classic climbing movies and clips from the last 20 years https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMuDqExNJkCJpOHsX4VKY9g 56 Degrees Underground – perhaps one of the best looking small boards in the world made by Ned Feehally, one of the creators of Beastmaker. THE DOOMED & STONED SHOW Season 5, Episode 18 Over the weekend, I watched one of those really awful Troma flicks on YouTube. It was called Plutonium Baby (1997) and, well, I absolutely loved it. Then again, I have a thing for B-movies. This particular one inspired me to do another installment in our 'Doomed Cinema' series. Listen for an array of music as eclectic as Plutonium Baby itself (which neither features plutonium nor a baby). I even found a band named after the film and have chosen a pair of tracks by them to bookend this strange tale. PLAYLIST INTRO (00:00) 1. The atomic number 189 denotes a hypothetical eka-superactinide called "Unoctennium", which sounds very similar to the fictional material called "Unobtanium". Unoctennium has not been observed in the wild yet, but should it exist it's already been named. What does this have to do with metal music? Not a damn thing, save for I'm writing up show notes for episode 189 and that was the most interesting thing that happened with the number 189 (other than some emperors and a pope dying) so this is tangentially related to metal. Plus it's kinda cool to think about metals that we think might exist but don't yet. Who knows, maybe we'll observe it in our lifetime. But what we can observe are tangible artifacts of amazing Creative Commons Metal Music. We have tracks from Dead Empires, Chaos in Paradise, Under Vultures, Zeugen der Leere, Eave, TRAIDOR, VSTRS, and Beastmaker to give your ear drums the Creative Commons metal music punishing they deserve. And you won't have to wait for science to catch up in order to discover these in the wild. Just give them a listen. Even better: check out the albums that these tracks come from and capture them in your own private archive. Do it for yourself, for the bands who make the music... hell, do it for science. (00:10) The Form by Dead Empires from Designed To Disappear (BY-ND) (05:18) Hearts Apart by Chaos in Paradise from Transversal (BY-NC-ND) (10:56) To Follow the Wake by Under Vultures from Split with El Hambre - 7'' (BY-NC) (13:09) Flammentraum by Zeugen der Leere from Erinnerungen an Theia (BY-NC) (26:22) Staining the Ore by Eave from Banners to the Moonswept (BY-NC) (32:28) Violento by TRAIDOR from Holocausto Cotidiano (BY-NC-ND) (40:27) Brilliant Violence by VSTRS from Pandemonium Seesaw (BY-NC-SA) (46:16) Skeletal Rider by Beastmaker from EP. 9 (BY-NC) Please support the bands in this show! He’s one half of the Beastmaker team, and one of the strongest climbers in the UK. Ned Feehally has added some of the country’s hardest problems, bouldered up to Font 8C, done well in comps and pushed the art of highball bouldering as far as it’s been pushed. Yet he remains backstage and keeps his climbing to himself. Let’s hear what this dark horse has to say.
Enter the world of Trevor William Church. This episode is a wild ride as we let Trevor tell his story of how he got into music and what his creative force comes from. His bands Haunt has a new album out called "Burst into flames" and Beastmaker recently released eight (!) EP's.

Here at the Open Metalcast headquarters were'coming up on the July 4th holiday. That can only mean one thing: a constant barrage of folks taking their hard-earned money and transforming it into displays of sound and color. That's all good for them but we prefer to celebrate freedom by taking our hard-earned cash and transforming it into displays of the most amazing Creative Commons metal music the net has to offer. Gathered in this episode are the likes of Beastmaker, Goddess Of Fate, Blot, Antisoph, VOR, filferro, BLACKWYCH, and GENTEMAYOR. And unlike a fireworks display you can re-play this again and again and even share it with your friends. Its 100% better to share than mosquito repellent and unlike that potato salad that's been out all afternoon it's only guaranteed to give you sick riffs, not sick... well, you get the idea. Wood has been making a comeback over the last few years, championed by companies like Beastmaker in Europe and Tension here in North America. Will Anglin is one of the boys behind Tension, and he talks with me about his own personal history with wood grips, the unique struggles of working with wood, and the benefits you can only get from a well-sanded grain.

Ever have one of those days where you just want to keep the music going and don't want it to stop? That's what happened with this episode. It's understandable when you have such great bands as deafheaven, Eschatos, Seal Of Beleth, Beastmaker, Fodastic Brenfers, KDC, Rebel Wizard, Envig, Azgard, and Vinnum Sabbathi in your playlist. Heck, you just forget to stop the music and announce all of the great songs until the very end of the episode. Well, maybe you might. Not that I'm speaking from experience here, but sometimes the music just flows so perfectly you don't want it to stop and you can't figure out where to stop. So sit back and enjoy the episode and relax: I couldn't figure out where to stop either.
