De heren van Osmium - de zwaarste podcast in het Nederlands - zijn graag op festivals. Lovecraft uit de eerste helft van de 20e eeuw én aan de illuminati, het geheime genootschap dat volgens complotdenkers achter de schermen aan werkelijk waar alle touwtjes trekt. Dus eindelijk, eindelijk is het zover: een Cthulu-special van Dood & Verderf, met niemand minder dan Cthuluminati- en Teitan-frontman Devi Hisgen. We luisteren naar zijn favoriete metaltracks én verdwalen mee in de absurde wereld van Lovecraft, Cthulhu en The Great Old Ones. Zwaar Aanbevolen Embraced by Darkness - Darkness Awaits (MMXXII, 2022) Devi is via Teitan onderdeel uit van de kwalitatief indrukwekkende Nederlandse blackmetalscene die werkelijk overal in het land uitstekende zwartgeblakerde bands voortbrengt die de grenzen van het genre soms ver oprekken en er af en toe overheen gaan. Traditionele black metal in de stijl van de Scandinavische grootheden wordt echter ook nog gemaakt in Nederland. Bijvoorbeeld door Embraced by Darkness uit Groningen. Deze band is al actief sinds 2013, maar heeft nu pas een eerste EP uitgebracht: MMXXII. Slechts 17:39 minuten duurt dit schijfje, maar het is genoeg om een verpletterende indruk achter te laten. Alles klopt hier namelijk aan. Het is allesverwoestende klassieke (Zweedse) black metal wat Embraced by Darkness brengt. Luid, venijnig, afwisselend, snel waar het kan maar melodieus waar het moet, kraakhelder, bloeddorstig, blast beats, kwaadaardig maar o zo heerlijk. Zanger Akse heeft een stem waarmee hij fruit ter plekke kan laten rotten: de haat spat ervan af. Achter hem wordt bijzonder smaakvol gemusiceerd. Het maakt dat Embraced by Darkness rauw maar tegelijkertijd toegankelijk is: de nummers schieten voorbij. De vier nummers op de EP laten qua titels niet aan de verbeelding over: Black Flames of Blasphemy, Black Mass en Lord of Darkness. Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 216 features an interview with Bar-Gal of Pylar. Emerging from the Spanish town of Seville, the mysterious collective known as Pylar employ the violin, mandolin, french horn, and keyboards to create their singular mix of slow metal, ambient music, and psychedelia. The unclassifiable nature of their music (along with their desire for anonymity) has drawn comparisons to similarly avant/experimental bands like Portal, Blut Aus Nord, and Oranssi Pazuzu. I spoke with guitarist/keyboardist Bar-Gal about what brought the members of Pylar together, and how the listener should experience their music. We also discussed the literary works that inspired Pylar's latest release, Abysmos, as well as what to expect from the final part of the trilogy they started with their Horror Cósmyco album. There's a charged frisson of disagreement regarding a couple of the records this week with reviews of new releases by Enter Shikari, Oranssi Pazuzu, The Black Dahlia Murder, Sugar Horse and Wild Cat Strike. But that's nothing compared to the righteous anger of Ticketmaster customers, after the US website discreetly changed the wording of their terms and conditions to state that customers could only get a refund if shows were completely cancelled, a pretty contemptible move at a time when so many shows are being postponed (rather than cancelled) due to the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19. Steve and Remfry wag their fingers and drag the ticket giant to the naughty step, but should the same punishment be dished out to Bob Dylan for his widely-derided 1970 album Self-Portrait? Twee uur voordat we onze liverstream aanzetten komt het appje binnen. 'Ik kom alleen, Gerald ligt in het ziekenhuis met een maagbloeding.' Ja, ja. Vorige keer had jij een voedselvergiftiging en nu heeft Gerald Timmermans een maagbloeding. Wat voor shit doen jullie allemaal daar bij Tartarus Records? Tartarus Records 'Ik weet het niet man. Maar er komt een dag dat we gezond samen hier voor je aan tafel zitten', belooft Postma. Geen probleem. Zolang Gerald maar snel herstelt. Richard lacht en laat een screenshot zien waarop zijn zakenpartner in een metalshirt op een ziekenhuisbed ligt. Twee infuusingangen, aan elk arm eentje, zijn duidelijk te zien. De tekst bij de foto luidt: 'Hoeveel heb jij? Ik heb twee infusen nu. Loser.' Het is wel duidelijk wat de kantoorvibez zijn bij Tartarus Records, dat ooit begon als een metal georiënteerd boutique label dat alleen cassettebandjes uitbracht. Nu is dit uitgegroeid tot meer dan metal en zeker meer dan alleen tapes. Filmmaker Ik hoef Richard maar te vragen wat voor vette shit op dit moment in de pijplijn zit en hij brandt los. Van onze welbekende boys van Yìn Yìn tot duistere zware beats uit Colombia. Het laatste fascineert me en dagen na de podcastopnames ga ik me een potje hard op Filmmaker. Het is rauw, donker en hard. 'Eigenlijk alles waar we voor staan met Tartarus', grijnst mijn gast. 'Dit is een van de weinige gevallen waarin wijzelf iemand hebben benaderd om zijn werk uit te brengen.' Hoe ze bij een producer uit Colombia terecht komen? 'Tja, hoe kom je bij zoiets uit. Mensen raden je dingen aan en dan klik je door. Voor je het weet luister je naar dit.' Wanneer de release komt kan Richard nog niet zeggen. 'Soon.' Oranssi Pazuzu Als je iemand als Postma eenmaal aan het ondervragen bent over toffe muziek dan moet je ook het onderste uit de kan proberen te halen. Hij deelt graag zijn pareltjes. Niet per se dat deze op Tartarus uitkomen, nee, in het algemeen weet mijn gast iedereen te verrijken met interessante tracks en albums. Van Just Mustard uit Ierland die een Portishead nineties sound weten neer te zetten. Tot wat meer geluiden voor de getrainde oren. 'Waar ik met plezier naar luister is de plaat Värähtelijä van de Finse band Oranssi Pazuzu. Die heb ik bijna elke dag wel even aan. Het heeft alles, van  drone en black metal tot aan slimme electronica. Ik kan er echt van genieten.' Of het een beetje wat wegheeft van Bongripper? 'Nee, dat is meer jointjes roken en headbangen op de bank. Dit is echt paddo's eten in een donker bos en hopen dat je niet ritueel gevierendeeld wordt door een sjamaan.' Ah, l’épisode 26 ou le début de la fin comme on l’appelle… Un épisode au bout du slip, dans lequel on revient malgré tout sur l’interview de Celeste, les cashless qui se remplissent, quelques news métal avec les nouveautés à écouter. Une rapide, beaucoup trop succincte chronique de Mos Generator et enfin quelque groupes réécoutés, approfondies, décortiqués tel que Cro-Mags, Oranssi Pazuzu, Alice In Chains, Orange Goblin, Modern Life Is War, At the Gates… Avec bien sur un peu de bonne humeur , quelques blagounettes, une voir deux bière max et toujours présentés par vos deux piliers de Bar, Jack… Et Bob.

Aunque estamos liados preparando el fanzine, siempre tenemos un hueco para juntarnos un rato y comentar la actualidad. En este programa hablamos de nuestro X aniversario (¡BIEN!) y hacemos un poco de precalentamiento para la edición de este año del Primavera Sound. También comentamos las últimas novedades discográficas, repletas de comebacks: in•ter a•li•a es el primer disco de At the Drive-In en 17 años, y Slowdive han vuelto con un álbum homónimo tras 22. Además hablamos sonre los nuevos discos de Afghan Whigs, Arca y Bala. Cómo no hay nada interesante de comentar de la actualidad (el programa está grabado antes de la muerte de Chris Cornell), repasamos los últimos conciertos a los que hemos ido, que han sido bien variados: desde Oranssi Pazuzu a Kinder Malo & Pimp Flaco.
