This week we're diving into the wonderfully gloomy world of Emma Ruth Rundle. Or more specifically, we're having a bit of a discussion whether she's actually goth or not, what goth even means, and how it may be broader than some think. Musically, Chris thinks most of her catalogue is a bit pants but she has artistic integreity. Mark reckons she's brilliant. Emma Ruth Rundle has spent her career shape-shifting between projects like some sort of musical chameleon with commitment issues. From her early folk-gaze days with The Nocturnes to her brief stint with post-rock titans Red Sparrows. From the overlooked Marriages project to her increasingly experimental solo work. She's never been one to stay in her lane. The question is: does all this reinvention actually work, or is it just restless artist syndrome? We get deep into the weeds of her entire discography. Our main focus is 2016's "Marked for Death", which Mark insists is her masterpiece and Chris... well, Chris has opinions. We also tackle the thorny question of what actually constitutes "goth" in 2025. Spoiler: it's probably not what you think. Plus we discuss her genuinely unnerving experimental albums. And try to work out why Sargent House thought it was a good idea to send a recovering alcoholic to record alone in the desert. With unlimited booze. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
What the H? Exactly. The award-winning* Lickers discuss some of their favorite records filed under the letter H. -- In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For nearly one half of a century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2023, idiotic, introverted hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-third episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably good solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru G, so naturally, they went with H. The pandemic offered Evan Patterson an opportunity he hadn't had in years; to take some time off from touring with his earth-shaking band Young Widows, his solo outfit Jaye Jayle and with his ex-wife's band Emma Ruth Rundle after he played 210 dates in 2019. The breather has given him perspective on making music and why he does it. It also gave him time to refine his artistic and screen printing skills again, and a chance to try his hand at carpentry, which turns out he's also got game at. With new music from Young Widows currently percolating, Evan is optimistic and prolific in this Louisivlle springtime, and now he's even looking forward to touring again in the very near future.
Riley Stearns is a writer, director, jiu jitsu brown belt, metal-head, gear dork, cold brew addict, and so much more. His feature debut "Faults" was a nice introduction to what would become one of the most unique voices in film today. His follow-up, "The Art of Self Defense" is a movie that Ross regularly credits as the film that made him laugh the hardest he has ever laughed in a theater. Riley has now arrived at his third feature "DUAL", which might be his most signature film to date. It debuted at Sundance, and will be available in theaters April 15th. It's the existential black comedy we all need. Riley joins Ross and Ian to talk about the creative process behind "Dual", honing his unique dialogue, working with folks like Aaron Paul and Karen Gillan, working with Emma Ruth Rundle, building the Full of Hell cinematic universe, and so much more. If you are a film dork, a music dork, a gear dork, a jiu jitsu dork, or anything of the sorts, there is something in here for you. There is much more to this conversation (over 30 extra minutes of deeper insights and specifics over at the Rigs of Dad Patreon Page where you can also hear more interviews with previous guests, patreon exclusives, and beyond! So, 2021 nears it's end and it's been another weird one, but again a brilliant year for music. We even had a few opportunities to see actual live music this year! Here's our traditional best of the year episode! We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of this year. Emma Ruth Rundle has become something of a favourite of ours over the years, with 2018's On Dark Horses and her recent collaboration with Thou both getting enthusiastic thumbs up from Remfry and Steve on previous episodes. But her latest album, Engine of Hell, marks a stylistic change from all her previous work. Rather than the expansive, full-band, reverb-drenched sound she's become synonymous with, Engine of Hell is stripped back and almost unbearably emotionally exposed. New releases are still fairly thin on the ground, so Steve and Remfry continue to take a look back at some of the records they missed at the tail end of 2020, including Taylor Swift's evermore (15:30) Alpha Male Tea Party's Infinity Stare (54:15) and Gone is Gone's (deep breath) If Everything Happens For A Reason...Then Nothing Really Matters At All (72:18) There is some brand new music however in the form of The Helm of Sorrow, a new collaborative EP from Emma Ruth Rundle and Thou (89:06) that's come hot on the heels of last year's debut collaborative full-length May Our Chambers Be Full. Individuals can make a monthly or one-time contribution at agreatbigcity.com/support and local businesses can have a lasting impact by supporting local news while promoting products or services directly to interested customers listening to this podcast. Visit agreatbigcity.com/advertising to learn more. AGBC is more than just a news website — To provide better information about what's going on in the city, AGBC watches FDNY data and automatically sends out an alert if a fire or emergency becomes a serious event, and posts that info to social media along with a map, the neighborhood name, and the nearest intersection, so that you know what is happening if you see smoke rising into the sky.
