Rich Costey is a producer and audio engineer who has such a stunning CV of incredible artists that you only wish you had three hours to interview him and talk about them all: Biffy Clyro, Muse, Foo Fighters, Fiona Apple, and so many more. Headliner talks about Costey's amazing career, how his time working at Philip Glass' studio shaped him professionally, and how Waves plugins fit into the whole picture.
Formed in 1999, Earshot signed to Warner Bros. in 2001 after the label heard their blend of moody melodic metal and entered the studio with producer David Kahne. After the recording session, the record was polished up by mixer Andy Wallace and released in the summer of 2002 as LETTING GO. The album yielded their first hit single reaching #4 on U.S. Active Rock radio charts and stayed in the top 100 for over 64 weeks. The albums lead off track appeared on the soundtrack alongside other artists. In 2003, Earshot returned to the studio to begin work on their second album, (produced by Johnny K. and mixed by Rich Costey), released in 2004 on Warner Bros. Records. Their breakout single ‘Wait' reached #9 on U.S. Active Rock radio charts while also being featured on the hugely successful Madden NFL 2005 and MX vs. ATV Unleashed video game soundtracks. https://open.spotify.com/artist/6eeYh... Well, I guess this is growing up. On Marmite and Boudica and Red Dwarf and The Van Pelt and the best punk rock album of the year. Earlier this month, Frank Turner released his ninth studio album. Entitled FTHC, it is by far his most "punk rock" album to date (I suppose one could argue that his previous album, 2019's No Man's Land, which was primarily a historical folk album with each song telling a different tale about a woman from history, ranging from Sister Rosetta Tharpe to Christa McAuliffe, was his most "punk rock" album to date for entirely different reasons, but that's more of a semantic argument than we need right now). FTHC is his most personal album to date - no easy feat for someone who's made a career of wearing his tape deck heart on his sleeve. It may indeed be his best album to date. It is, most certainly and perhaps not surprisingly given the above factors, his first album to debut at #1 on the charts in his native UK. We caught up with Turner the day after learning that FTHC was, in fact, named the number one selling album in the land. We talked about the importance of that distinction, particularly as it came fifteen years and nine albums into his solo career. We talked about the influences behind the album and about how getting married and turning 40 and still being alive has provided a different sort of perspective that wasn't afforded to his younger self. We talked about the making of the album (the image of Ilan Rubin recording drums in a Los Angeles studio over Zoom while Frank watched from London and producer Rich Costey watched from Vermont is still one I find endlessly amusing). We talked about the stories behind some of the album's more personal tracks, although I did leave out the songs about his struggles with anxiety and cocaine addiction and how his relationship with his father changed after the latter came out as a trans woman several years ago; those have been covered at length in other outlets. And perhaps most importantly, we talked about the legion of Turner fans, aptly known as the Frank Turner Army, that has been steadily building for the better part of the last decade and who, frankly, rightly share in a lot of the success behind FTHC. They even pitched in for a few questions that certainly ran a stylistic gamut. If you haven't bought FTHC yet, get it at your local indie record store or here: https://store.frank-turner.com/ If you want to go back in time and read our chat with Frank from the steps of Boston's City Hall before his 2014 appearance at Boston Calling, go here: https://dyingscene.com/ds-interview-and-photo-gallery-frank-turner-in-boston-on-his-1567-show-rise-to-fame/ If you want to watch my then-four-year-old daughter sing "English Curse," go here. Frank Turner joins us via Zoom to chat through his upcoming new album 'FTHC', featuring recent singles 'The Gathering' and Scott Hutchison tribute 'A Wave Across A Bay'. He talks working with producer Rich Costey and guest drummers, Muse's Dominic Howard and Nine Inch Nails/Angels & Airwaves member Ilan Rubin. Plus, we talk future live plans, reflect on his split album with NOFX and 15 years since his debut solo album 'Sleep Is For The Week'.
In part 2 of the Productionwise dive into the work of Rich Costey, we really find his signature sound. His work with Biffy Clyro, Of Monsters and Men, Interpol and Glasvegas gives him colossal spaces to fill, while collaborations with Franz Ferdinand and At the Drive-In pick up the pace. And is that 2000s mtv-core revival on the horizon? In this episode, James and Graham talk sincerity in music, matching the right production to the right album, and allegations.
The second series of Productionwise kicks off with an exploration of the great work of Rich Costey. Rich has done it all over a career that has seen him work extensively as an engineer for Philip Glass and a mixer for Rick Rubin, but his production work has a strong flavour despite its diversity. His most high-profile collaborations are with the likes of Muse, Biffy Clyro, Jane's Addiction and Death Cab for Cutie but, as you'll see, Rich could really work with anyone and make an impression. In this episode, James and Graham talk poppy second albums, the pros and cons of being a safe pair of hands, transcending the sound of a band in a room, fantasy in music and the problem with cymbals.
Rich Costey doesn't give as many interviews as he should, and I'm really happy he agreed to come on the show. Originally recorded June 15th, 2020, the conversation is epic! We cover Fiona Apple, Philip Glass, Muse, The Mars Volta and more.
