Questions? Thoughts? Send a Text to The Optometry Money Podcast! We'll answer your question on the show.Episode SummaryThe largest IPO in history is here. SpaceX goes public this week with an expected total value of $1.77 trillion, and OpenAI and Anthropic have both announced plans to go public this year at valuations around $1 trillion each. In optometry forums and online communities everywhere, ODs are asking the same question: should I get in?In this episode, we look at 45 years of data and research on how IPOs have actually performed for investors - and then dig into the question that matters more for most listeners: how index funds and other passive funds will add these mega IPOs to their portfolios, and what that means for you.Have questions about your own investment approach? Reach out at podcast@optometrywealth.com.What You'll LearnWhat an IPO is and why 2026's IPOs are historic in sizeHow IPOs have historically performed compared to the broad US stock marketWhy the famous "first-day pop" doesn't benefit everyday investorsThe distribution of individual IPO outcomes over 3 and 5 years — and why most lose moneyWhy periods of peak IPO hype tend to be followed by the worst returnsHow the S&P 500, Russell, CRSP, and MSCI indexes decide when (and how much of) an IPO to includeWhat "float adjustment" means and why these trillion-dollar companies will enter index funds as tiny sliversHow the Nasdaq-100's approach to IPOs differs from broad market indexesWhether index fund "front-running" around IPO inclusions should worry long-term investorsHow factor-based funds like Dimensional handle newly public companiesKey Takeaways for OptometristsInvesting in IPOs right after they go public has historically been a poor strategy. IPOs as a group have trailed the broad market, and when you look at individual companies, roughly 60% lost money over their first three to five years - while a small sliver delivered lottery-like gains that lift the averages. Betting on IPOs means betting you can pick those rare winners. For index fund investors, these mega IPOs will eventually show up in your funds - but because indexes are float-adjusted, even a $1.77 trillion company may enter as a fraction of a percent of the index. The impact on your portfolio, good or bad, is small. The bigger lesson: when hype is at its highest, expected returns tend to be at their lowest. Staying broadly diversified, keeping costs low, and not chasing shiny objects continues to be the prudent approach - and if you do want a lottery ticket, be honest about what it is and size it accordingly.Related Episodes:Ep 134: The Case for Index Funds – Why Optometrists Should Embrace Passive InvestingEp 135: Beyond Indexing – An Optometrist's Guide to Factor-Based InvestingEp 58: Investing Fundamentals – Understanding Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds, and ETFsEp 153: How to Invest Tax-Efficiently and Keep More of Your Returns (After-tax)Resources for OptometristsLoughran & Ritter (1995), "The New Issues Puzzle" — Journal of FinanceDimensional Fund Advisors (2019), "What to Know About IPOs" research studyDimensional Fund Advisors 2025 video: Do IPOs Have a Place in Your Portfolio?Jay Ritter's Long-Run Returns on IPOs (University of Florida)2025: Primary Capital Market Transactions and Index FundsCullen Roche's Article: Three Things – 100s, SpaceX, & IndexingWant a more proactive approach to your planning? You can schedule a no-commitment introductory call to discuss what's on your mind financially and learn how we help optometrists navigate those same decisions nationwide.

Veterans, corporate burnout survivors and anyone who has ever confused suffering in silence with being strong will find something worth hearing in this one. This episode is for the people who are fine, totally fine, definitely fine... and haven't slept properly in three months.More info, resources & ways to connect - https://www.tacosfallapart.com/podcast-live-show/podcast-guests/omar-ritterOmar Ritter has lived more than most people will ever face in a lifetime. West Point graduate, Bronze Star recipient, combat veteran from Iraq and Kosovo, twenty-year Wall Street executive, brain tumor survivor. He's also someone who spent years hiding the fact that he was falling apart on the inside while everything looked great from the outside. In this episode of Even Tacos Fall Apart, Omar sits down to talk honestly about PTSD, burnout, identity loss and what it actually took to get better.Omar's breaking point didn't come on a battlefield. It came in boardrooms, in sleepless nights at JP Morgan, in a moment when he left his wife home alone with their week-old baby to go deliver documents to his boss at 3am. He was the guy who always got things done, no matter what it cost him. And that identity, the guy who never cracks, is exactly what nearly killed him.He opens up about his gunner from Iraq, a man who appeared fine on Facebook, who was chatting and checking in, and who then took his own life and the lives of his children after an untreated mental health crisis hijacked everything he was. Omar doesn't sugarcoat it. He calls PTSD what he believes it is: a hijacker in the cockpit of your brain, making you do things the real you never would. The conversation covers what burnout actually looks like versus just being tired or stressed, and why veterans in particular are so reluctant to get help. Omar is blunt about the stigma, but he's equally blunt about the excuses. TriCare covers treatment. Corporate benefits packages cover therapy. You can schedule a session on your lunch break and nobody needs to know. The resources exist. The harder part is deciding you're worth using them. One of the most powerful threads in this episode is the difference between powering through and real resilience. Omar held a gun to his own temple while powering through a job he hated in a city he never wanted to live in. He knows the difference from the inside. Resilience, he says, is bouncing back. Powering through with an untreated mental health condition is just damage accumulating until your body or your brain forces the issue. He also talks about the identity crisis that hits veterans when they leave service and walk into corporate America leading with their rank and their medals, only to find out nobody in the room knows what a combat action badge is or why it should matter to them. The reframe he had to learn was painful but necessary.Omar now teaches accounting and finance at UNC Charlotte, sits on veteran entrepreneur boards, and wrote the book West Point to Wall Street: My Journey to Mental Wellness. His audiobook just dropped. His message is simple: raise your hand, make the call, and deal with the rest once you're healthy. Everything else can wait.

From Barbara Robertson and Nancy Mohrbacher: Using new research in clinical practice? How do we do this? When is it time to let go of our old ways of doing things and incorporate new information? These are some of the questions Nancy and Barbara discuss in this episode of All Things Breastfeeding. Sometimes, incorporating new research in clinical practice is easy. It can be an “ah-ha” moment. Nancy had this when she learned about Suzanne Colson’s research on releasing babies’ reflexes to stimulate breastfeeding. She knew Suzanne’s description was true and immediately began incorporating Suzanne’s ideas into her practice. Barbara had this type of moment when she read Nancy’s article, “The Magic Number.” On the other hand, we can also suffer from confirmation bias. We may want to believe that we can use human milk for longer than the current recommendations (see article below), so we are happy when a study suggests this might be true. On the other hand, it can take 17 years or longer for research to become clinical practice. When should we wait? When is it time to change? Some clear guidance both Nancy and Barbara use is: “Will it be harmful?” It does not harm anyone to start playing around with latch and positioning, or adding extra milk removals, for someone struggling with milk supply. Take a listen to learn more about Nancy’s and Barbara’s thoughts on this subject. Enjoy! Resources: Colson SD, Meek JH, Hawdon JM. When Jordan Ritter Conn was a teenager growing up in an Evangelical Christian family, he met with a half dozen male friends every Saturday night for Bible Study. The sessions were a free-for-all for owning up to masturbation or admitting your insecurities, for speaking frankly about your father or dreaming about your future. Now a veteran journalist covering sports and culture for The Ringer and the author of the new book American Men, Conn still considers those Saturday nights "some of the best of my life." On this episode of Paternal, Conn discusses why so many men are struggling to make similarly meaningful connections, as well as what he learned from years of intimate and revealing conversations with four men from diverse American backgrounds for his new book. He also examines the male loneliness crisis, why all men have to face "the masculinity gap" at some point in their lives, and why he always texts a male friend after a meaningful conversation. Conn's new book, American Men, is available wherever you buy books.

Worum geht's? Jimmy Dore analyzes Donald Trump's absurd threat to "blockade" the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran already controls and has been charging $2 million per ship to allow passage, while military experts like Scott Ritter and Larry Johnson explain that any U.S. attempt to board foreign ships would be an act of war—and that U.S. naval vessels are staying 700 miles from the Iranian coast after being driven back by drone attacks. Jimmy and Americans' Comedian Kurt Metzger point out that Trump will simultaneously beg for a ceasefire and threaten to bomb Iran again, all while admitting gas prices "could be a little bit higher" before the midterms — an admisstion that stunned even Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo. Ritter notes that the U.S. has already lost the war, that Iran holds all the cards, and that any new escalation would trigger Iran to destroy Gulf energy infrastructure, collapse the global economy, and end modern civilization in the region. Jimmy concludes that Trump is completely controlled by Netanyahu, who needs the war to continue to avoid prison and secure reelection in Israel. Plus segments on Trump's hostile response to Pope Leo, negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner's divided loyalties and the impending demise of NATO. Also featuring Mike MacRae, Col. Douglas Macgregor and Stef Zamorano. And a phone call from JD Vance!
