Nick Wheeler of The All-American Rejects talks to Behind the Setlist about hitting it big in the '00s, the slowdown in the '10s and the band's return to meaningful touring in the '20s (and their performance at the 2022 When We Were Young festival that got the ball rolling). The band recently released a cover of the 1997 Harvey Danger song "Flagpole Sitta" through independent Spin Records and, Wheeler says, is currently plotting more recorded music. Listen and learn about Wheeler's love of fine coffee and the time the band recorded a Beach Boys cover song that was never released. In February of 2024, after a self-funded search, Nick Wheeler took the helm at NSCA & Tra-Cal, an enduringly profitable small business that's been serving the electronics, manufacturing, and telecom industries since 1988. In this episode, he reflects on his entrepreneurship through acquisition journey to-date, with a particular focus on his experience of “drinking from the firehose” during his first months as CEO. Nick shares the pain of broken deals during the search process; what appealed to him about NSCA & Tra-Cal, including those specific characteristics that made it a high-quality acquisition target; his approach to Day One on the job; his relationship with the seller during the transition period; the strategies he's implemented; and his thoughts on both the challenges and the tremendous fulfillment that he's experienced along the way.
Professor Sebastian Kaempf of the University of Queensland joins the Hayseed Scholar podcast this week.Seb grew up in Germany, with the fall of the Berlin Wall happening when he was entering his teenage years. While it had a big impact on him, he distinctly remembers his parents' emotional reactions to that moment. He also was a conscientious objector and thus did not serve in the German military but his service was in some ways even more challenging as he notes here. Seb talks about going to uni in Germany before transferring to the LSE for his Bachelor's and Masters, heading towards the academic track being trained for his PhD under Nick Wheeler and Alastair Finlan at University of Aberystwyth Wales. His first gig on a post-doc working with Alex Bellamy at UQ where he has been ever since. He discusses how the Theaters of War film project came about, what that was like, how he approaches writing, his co-hosted podcast with Al Stark, Higher Ed Heroes, what he does to unwind, and how he and friend of the pod and Hayseed Scholar co-host Matt McDonald will likely become the next big indie rock band as they are currently playing venues in Brisbane where they have achieved almost cult status at this point.

In episode 78 our guest, professor Nick Wheeler, discusses several crucial aspects of international relations and diplomacy. He explores the concept of "reassurance summits" and the role they play in diplomacy, where leaders attending diplomatic summits seek reassurance and test whether the other side perceives their defensive actions as stemming from fear and insecurity rather than hostile intent. He challenges the conventional wisdom that leaders should only engage in face-to-face diplomacy when their interests are already aligned. He introduces the idea of "security dilemma sensibility" in international relations, challenging the notion that uncertainty inevitably leads to competition and distrust. He emphasizes the need for leaders to understand the defensive motivations of others and break the cycle of misperceptions to promote cooperation and trust. Nick Wheeler delves into the possibility of developing social bonds and trust in the absence of face-to-face interaction. Drawing from Randall Collins' work, he suggests that weaker social bonds can indeed be formed without physical proximity, particularly through textually mediated interactions. He highlights the importance of shared security dilemma sensibility and shared mood in this context. He shares a cautionary tale from Dostoyevsky's "The Brothers Karamazov" to illustrate the limits of trust in transactional relationships. He argues that trust based solely on individual calculations of benefits and risks can quickly erode when the context changes. Shifting his focus to India-Pakistan relations, Wheeler examines the trust dynamics between leaders like Vajpayee and Sharif, emphasizing the importance of "trust, capacity, vulnerability" in assessing whether leaders can fulfill their promises and commitments. He also highlights the complexity of trust and opportunism in adversarial relationships. The discussion continues with an exploration of the role of interpersonal dyads in changing conflict situations. Wheeler underscores the significance of leaders being able to deliver on their commitments and the challenges of scaling up trust beyond individual relationships. He emphasizes the need to embed trust within decision-making processes and society itself to address future uncertainty. Finally he touches upon his upcoming book with Marcus Holmes, "Personal Chemistry: Social Bonds and International Conflict." The book aims to demystify the concept of personal chemistry in international relations by developing a theory that explains why leaders sometimes establish positive interpersonal relationships and sometimes do not. Through case studies, they aim to shed light on the factors influencing leaders' relationships and trust dynamics in diplomacy and conflict resolution.

This is not an April Fools joke.... We decided to release episode 41 on 4/1/23... We begin this episode with Back to Back All American Rejects shows at the Brady Theater in Tulsa & the Bricktown Events Center in Oklahoma City. The Tulsa show was filmed for a DVD release... After that we discuss another Tulsa Pimpadelic show.... Where are they now????? We'd love to hear from someone from the Pimpadelic camp to get them on this podcast! June 8th, 2003, KATTFEST featured Godsmack as the headliner... 20 years later, Godsmack headlines KATTFEST 2023! This podcast is as much about the Music & Entertainment Business as it is about the history & legendary concerts that have come through Oklahoma. We discuss what happens next for the next crop of Classic Rock artists... 1990's Grunge artists are now, technically Classic Rock artists. How do they continue to tour & remain relevant?!? We also discuss an Otherside show with Killswitch Engage that didn't happen, the band cancelled the day of the show due to travel issues. The fans were extremely upset about the show not happening & taking it out on Max. The attitudes being thrown at Max, made him think it was a good idea to put the Tour Managers cel phone number on the front door, encouraging the attendee's to call the TM & voice their displeasure. (...not recomended btw)...See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Nick Wheeler first had the idea for Charles Tyrwhitt shirts - to make the best shirts, using only the finest materials, at great value, with unbeatable service - whilst studying Geography at Bristol University in 1986; He used his middle names - Charles Tyrwhitt – more anonymous (and better sounding!) than “Nick Wheeler shirts” The first brochure was a one-page leaflet with 8 shirts and 8 ties. After a stint with strategy consultancy Bain & Co, Nick went “full-time” in 1990. After being left £8,000 from a great aunt, Nick used the money to purchase the English dream: an Aston Martin DB1. One year later he sold the same car for an eye-watering £75,000 profit. This profit became the funding that set Nick up to become the powerhouse he is now. Success was steady, but the leaflet grew to four catalogues a year. This led to the opening of a shop on Jermyn Street in 1997, a website in 1998 and overseas expansion with stores in Paris (2001) and Madison Avenue, New York's (2003). There are now 45 stores worldwide. The product range has developed from just shirts and ties to suits, shoes and a full casual offering. Today the business is a multi-channel retailer and a leading British brand. Charles Tyrwhitt's mission today remains true to Nick's founding principles - to provide quality and value, and to deliver them to the customer with unrivalled customer service. Nick is also a non-executive director of The White Company. He is married to Chrissie Rucker, founder of the White Company. They have four children and live in Oxfordshire. Nick Wheeler from The All American Rejects is my guest today on the show . We talk about Nicks career in music as well as his new recording studio . Producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. As the co-founder, lead guitarist, and one of the primary songwriters of The All-American Rejects, he has sold over 5 million albums worldwide, with their single "Gives You Hell" hitting #1 on the Top 40 chart in 2009 and remaining on the charts for 36 weeks. Other hits include "Move Along," "Dirty Little Secret," and "It Ends Tonight," which all ranked in the top 10 on the Billboard Charts. Based in Nashville since 2015, Nickolas is now building Wheelhouse Studio, a freestanding space in East Nashville. In setting up his own studio, he credits historic spots he's worked in – the Village in Santa Monica, Barefoot Studios in Hollywood – in learning how to maximize both workflow and comfortability for artists. Wheelhouse Studio will have isolation, separate control and tracking rooms, as well as a lounge, kitchen, and outdoor courtyard space. Nickolas has been recording music since 1996 and making music professionally for almost 20 years. When artists come to record at Wheelhouse Studio, they can expect to feel taken care of by a producer who's ready to guide them to the next stage of their career and accomplish whatever they're wanting to create. The studio is a space for Wheeler to work with artists and writers "who are excited and passionate about what they're doing and open to collaboration in a vibey, comfortable, professional space." After attending Oklahoma State University for music theory, Nickolas has since honed his skills through an Advanced Certificate in mixing, engineering, and orchestration at Berklee College of Music, as well as becoming an Avid Certified Pro Tools User. Nickolas is also endorsed by Warm Audio, an Austin-based company that makes "some great reproductions of classic gear": he has their version of a Pultec EQP-1A, an LA-2A compressor, and several microphones. Wunder Audio (another Austin-based company) is also custom-building a console for the studio. As a guitar player, his guitar collection is in the triple digits – not to mention an extensive microphone collection: "I've collected a lot of fun toys to play with over the years from the road, stopping at music shops or things I've been inspired by in other studios that I felt I needed a version of in my own space." Though he's primarily someone who works best in the studio recording and producing music, Nickolas likes to develop a rapport with artists through writing with them. He's written with Welshly Arms, Never Loved, and Cassadee Pope ("What The Stars See," which he also produced), as well as several local independent artists in the rock, alternative, and pop music world in Nashville. Now signed to Waldman Management, because of his team and tools like Zoom, Nickolas has had his busiest and most successful year yet. Working digitally has allowed him to work with more artists outside of Nashville – and expand his repertoire in the process. Nickolas is the recipient of several ASCAP Pop Awards, and in 2007, he was the recipient of the ASCAP Vanguard Award. He was also inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame in 2008. More than two decades of experience have primed him with the knowledge, passion, and drive to launch his own freestanding studio. Ground was broken for Wheelhouse Studio in September 2020 and for more info you can visit https://www.nickolaswheeler.com/

Part 1 of Darrin's chat with Nick Wheeler, Guitarist-songwriter from the band All American Rejects.
Its episode 39 and i'm joined by Hampshire and DPL coach Nick Wheeler.
In our 75th episode, we're joined by Nick Wheeler, Lead Guitarist and founding member of The All-American Rejects. We talk Nick's early start with music, the formation of The Rejects, countless stories from the early days of the band through present day, and his work on the production side among many other topics. He may be the first guest we've ever had that had a permission slip to play in bars at 15 years old! Nick is as genuine as it gets and could be an even bigger music nerd than we are. Episode 24: Today's guest is an unbelievably self motivated powerhouse. COVID-19 has devastated the lives of many, but it was specifically financially crippling to professional wrestlers who relied on the income of independent shows and meet and greets. Not my girl, she took lemons and made patreon lemonade. With hardwork and tenacity she has become an independent wrestling business woman and is also training to set world powerlifting records. She has won my heart with her part time job transcribing court cases and we have bonded over our love for crime and Law & Order. She is an IMPACT wrestling Knockout, my girl, Jordynne Grace. We here at the Z&MM3 (we're too cool to spell it all out) haven't ran into too many other people that do what we do (bullshit artists) that we haven't yet met. But, as Ed MacMahon famously said, "I'm not paying that much for no stepped on shit, man! Come on, Jack!! I NEEEED IT!!! GIVE IT UP OR I'M GONNA FUCKIN' CUT YOU!!!!".........no, thats not it.......... it was, "strangers are just friends you haven't met yet", I don't know, some jackass crap like that. Anyway, this week we didn't know our guest, Nick Wheeler of The All American Rejects. Nick is a prolific writer and producer as well as guitarist in a huge band and we talk about being busy during COVID, Lego and the proper way to say LEGO (not LegoS, dipshit), television shows and Zach and Mike both contemplate each others deaths, but, like, in a fun way. Mike also manages to not embarrass Zach too much in front of their new friend (you can't take that guy anywhere). Its basically musicians talking about musician shit (the exact way we while away our lives in backstage rooms) so listen in and contemplate your place in this world........too much? I'm sorry. I've been listening to "This Mortal Coil", lately. I also haven't been wearing my crystal. I'm watching that "Moneyball" movie right now. It's pretty good. Seen it? I fuckin' hate sports Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In Season 2, Episode 6 Simon talks to Nick Wheeler. Nick Wheeler first had the idea for Charles Tyrwhitt shirts - to make the best shirts, using only the finest materials, at great value, with unbeatable service - whilst studying Geography at Bristol University in 1986;. He used his middle names - Charles Tyrwhitt – more anonymous (and better sounding!) than “Nick Wheeler shirts” The first brochure was a one-page leaflet with 8 shirts and 8 ties. The product range has developed from just shirts and ties to suits, shoes and a full casual offering. Today the business is a multi-channel retailer and a leading British brand. The company grew rapidly to sales of £220M in 2018, but then hit Covid… Charles Tyrwhitt's mission today remains true to Nick's founding principles - to provide quality and value, and to deliver them to the customer with unrivalled customer service. Nick is also a non-executive director of The White Company. He is married to Chrissie Rucker, founder of the White Company. They have four children and live in Oxfordshire. Nick was awarded an OBE for services for retail in December 2017.

Welcome to episode 22 of Turning the Tables and a different kind of story.A story about business and in today's terms, the rather an unfashionable story, of building a wholly-owned, global shirt business over the long haul of over 30 years. A story about learning from your failures, a story about belief, focus, determination and commitment. In an era when society seems to worship the short term, venture capital-backed, Unicorn, entrepreneurship model, my guest, Nick Wheeler's business approach is something of a rarity.Founded in 1986, over the last 30 years, Nick has steadily built his Charles Tyhritt clothing business to over £200m, operating in countries all over the world and employing 1,300 people.Nick is also married to Chrissy Rucker founder of the similarly successful White Company, another business that does not have outside investment and has followed a similar business model. In our conversation we talk about; How his early failures with a photography and Xmas tree and children's clothes business taught him lessons that paved the way for the development of the CT shirt businessHow an entrepreneurial spirit and a hatred for authority, meant even from the early days he was destined to start his own business and be in control of his destiny. The benefits of a paternalistic business model that values people and culture alongside profitand finally his advice to young entrepreneurs who are just starting. In the COVID era when over-leveraged businesses have suffered, the benefits of a longer-term view may now have a resurgence. Only time will tell.In the era of the quick fix and the rapid transformation, Nick's story makes a compelling case for the tortoise over the hare and the many benefits of just plugging away at it.Listen and share your stories about this episode on theTurning the Tables podcast community page on Facebook. And on Instagram TurningtheTablespodcastEpisode CreditEditor and sound engineer: Tim White email: showupnow@gmail.comHost: Simon RatcliffeMusic:Broken Elegance -UnconditionallyRiver Meditation - AudioautixAcoustic Guitar - Audioautix

Our guest on today's episode is Nick Wheeler, the founder of Charles Tyrwhitt. Now a true pillar of the high street and perhaps the best known shirtmaker in Britain, Charles Tyrwhitt began when Nick started flogging shirts by mail order at university. In the decades since, it's had monumental highs and a couple of lows — in fact, Nick tells us how the brand very nearly went bust twice, and how he's learned just as much from these near failures as he has from his successes. Recorded at the hub of Charles Tyrwhitt operations in London Bridge, in this episode Nick tells us why he'll never, ever sell the business; how the high street might just save itself; And why he keeps a beard in a jam jar.
We sat down with special guest Nick Wheeler-Hughes from Canada's Young Leaders to answer the important questions: are progressive ideas bi-partisan, what does the Green Party need to do to make progress in the upcoming elections, and, of course, what makes a burger a burger? Where do you draw the line? Are veggie-burgers still burgers? Do burgers need buns? This episode gets real heated. You're not ready. Kass was born in Pompton Plains section of Pequannock Township, New Jersey. He grew up in New Jersey where he began snowboarding at the age of twelve. His home slopes are what are now known as Hidden Valley and Mountain Creek ski resorts both located in the mountains of Vernon Township and Highland Lakes. After several years of shredding around the Mid-Atlantic States, Kass entered into the Okemo Mountain School to focus more of his time on riding some of the better pipe and park in the East. In 2001, Danny broke out into what has become one of the most successful contest streaks in snowboarding with four US Open Championships, seven Winter X Games medals and two Olympic silver medals. During the winter of 2006, Kass fought his way back from a slow start in the US Grand Prix Circuit to qualify for the Olympics in Torino for the second time in a row. And just like in 2002, Kass took home another silver medal with back-to-back 1080s and his signature smooth style. Kass and his brother Matt Kass were the founders of Grenade Gloves, which specializes in snowboarding gloves, accessories, and other extreme sporting gear. Kass is one of the stars of The Adventures of Danny and The Dingo on Fuel TV. Danny Kass has since road off into the sunset and has yet to be heard from in 2019... Until today. He sewed up that title again at Mammoth, where we talked to the 19 year old rider about competition, the quad 18, new tricks, dealing with injuries, and much more. Chris is well spoken, down to earth, with a strong desire to win. Elias Elhardt recently released the Movie “Contraddicition,” a complicated reflection on snowboarding's beautiful simplicity. Watch it here... https://vimeo.com/channels/staffpicks/320329893v Already the movie is gaining critical acclaim from the snowboarding community and beyond. name: Elias Elhardt D.O.B. February 27th 1988 Hometown: Oberstaufen Home resort: Kleinwalsertal Height: 173cm Weight: 73kg Stance width: 60cm Stance: regular Angles: +18° -13° Cool things about Contests: exciting, it can be super cool if it works out and be rewarding if you ride good. Shredding a very good shaped park most of the time with friends you enjoy as people and competitors as well. Filming: you can be so creative, no rules on what has to be done, no lines you have to take. It's all you and your ideas and how you see snowboarding and you put it down as you see it. You can ride powder jumps, cliff…Do as you please and see where the fun in snowboarding is. Session with friends: cool to see others enjoy the day and share something, being together. Often snowboarding is so individual and riding with friends can make everything better. Building moments together that you enjoy Powder riding: you feel so light, from one pillow to the other you slide along the mountain, like surfing, you get hundreds of possibilities to use the mountain. In powder riding, you see and decide the way you want to use the mountain. You can do whatever you like and it's soft so you can fall and try stuff. Slope shredding: I love it! Ride down the slope and slide, bonk or spin on things that weren't made for it. It's also a perfect training to get your board control which is something I like a lot in snowboarding and use the slope differently each time…it's endless. Worst thing about Contests: Pressure, a lot of pressure. It's not the best conditions but you have to give your best and go for it. It can be dangerous sometimes and you have to think of what you want to risk and how much. You have to stomp the trick and do your best, you don't have the control of the timing. Filming: It's way different than I thought it would be. It's not about riding like you like. It's hiking, searching, making decisions with the crew and at the end of it you might just ride few laps and it has to be the craziest tricks you have ever pulled on a huge spot and that's it for the day. Session with friends: nothing sucks Powder riding: As beautiful as it can be it can be dangerous, not only the snow layer is dangerous, you have to watch out for stones, rocks and trees as well. Slope shredding: when it's icy, it sucks. What is your definition of ‘The Search' ? The Search for me is surely mostly looking to get out there and being on a snowboard, to get good conditions and searching for the most possible ways of having fun. It's a search through the sport and for perfect snow to push new tricks while enjoying the moment with your friends.
