Welcome back to Drummers on Drumming! Today, I'm thrilled to share a conversation with a true force in modern drumming—Ilan Rubin. You've heard his incredible work behind the kit with artists like Nine Inch Nails, Danny Elfman, Angels & Airwaves, Paramore and so many more. But Ilan is not just an outstanding drummer; he's also a passionate educator, and his latest project proves just that.  He's recently released his instructional book, Start Somewhere to Go Somewhere, and trust me, it's not just another drum method book. In this episode, we certainly discuss the book, but we dive deep into Ilan's philosophy on practice and technique in a way that I personally haven't heard him talk about before … and why he felt compelled to share his unique perspective in an already crowded field of drum education. I have the book and ive been able to spend some more time with it since recording this episode and I can say first hand, it's worth it. So without further ado…here is my chat with the youngest rock n roll hall of fame inductee, Ilan Rubin. Welcome back to the channel! Ted Stryker welcomes guitarist, songwriter, and overall good dude, Josh Klinghoffer to the Tuna on Toast Studio. Pluralone, Josh's band, just released another album titled This is the Show.  Josh talks to Stryker about growing up in the Valley (Los Angeles) and listening to Morrissey, Depeche Mode, Guns N' Roses, AC/DC and Motley Crue. Josh tells Stryker how his Mom first signed him up for drums, not guitar. He started having friends (a full band) come over at an early age. At 15 Josh decided to pick up the guitar and learned to play without taking lessons. Josh and Stryker talk about how he is normally the youngest in the groups he plays with. Josh mentions the great Bob Forrest, the band Bicycle Thief and first meeting Bob. Josh tells Stryker about the "bloody battle" he had with his parents about dropping out of school.  Josh's new album is called "This is the Show"! His band is Pluralone. The album was born during the pandemic. Clint Walsh (Dot Hacker) and Josh worked together and found great harmony (both life and musically). Josh also tells Stryker about first meeting Eddie Vedder and working on the album Earthling. Josh talks to Stryker about joining the Red Hot Chili Peppers at 30 years old and spending all of his 30's with them. The guys also discuss Pluralone opening for Pearl Jam and also playing guitar with Pearl Jam during their set. Josh tells Stryker about his growth as a person and a musician. Well, I guess this is growing up. On Marmite and Boudica and Red Dwarf and The Van Pelt and the best punk rock album of the year. Earlier this month, Frank Turner released his ninth studio album. Entitled FTHC, it is by far his most "punk rock" album to date (I suppose one could argue that his previous album, 2019's No Man's Land, which was primarily a historical folk album with each song telling a different tale about a woman from history, ranging from Sister Rosetta Tharpe to Christa McAuliffe, was his most "punk rock" album to date for entirely different reasons, but that's more of a semantic argument than we need right now). FTHC is his most personal album to date - no easy feat for someone who's made a career of wearing his tape deck heart on his sleeve. It may indeed be his best album to date. It is, most certainly and perhaps not surprisingly given the above factors, his first album to debut at #1 on the charts in his native UK. We caught up with Turner the day after learning that FTHC was, in fact, named the number one selling album in the land. We talked about the importance of that distinction, particularly as it came fifteen years and nine albums into his solo career. We talked about the influences behind the album and about how getting married and turning 40 and still being alive has provided a different sort of perspective that wasn't afforded to his younger self. We talked about the making of the album (the image of Ilan Rubin recording drums in a Los Angeles studio over Zoom while Frank watched from London and producer Rich Costey watched from Vermont is still one I find endlessly amusing). We talked about the stories behind some of the album's more personal tracks, although I did leave out the songs about his struggles with anxiety and cocaine addiction and how his relationship with his father changed after the latter came out as a trans woman several years ago; those have been covered at length in other outlets. And perhaps most importantly, we talked about the legion of Turner fans, aptly known as the Frank Turner Army, that has been steadily building for the better part of the last decade and who, frankly, rightly share in a lot of the success behind FTHC. They even pitched in for a few questions that certainly ran a stylistic gamut. If you haven't bought FTHC yet, get it at your local indie record store or here: https://store.frank-turner.com/ If you want to go back in time and read our chat with Frank from the steps of Boston's City Hall before his 2014 appearance at Boston Calling, go here: https://dyingscene.com/ds-interview-and-photo-gallery-frank-turner-in-boston-on-his-1567-show-rise-to-fame/ If you want to watch my then-four-year-old daughter sing "English Curse," go here. Ilan Rubin Is a drummer in the rock n roll hall of fame band Nine inch Nails! He is also the the drummer (and co writer of many songs) for the Tom Delonge fronted band Angels and Airwaves.    On top of that, he's released a ton of music as The New Regime as well as under Ilan Rubin PLUS he's worked with Paramore!  Words do not do him justice!     Ilan knew at a very young age, well before 10 years old, that he wanted to pursue music professionally.  This episode is a very fun ride on how he was able to make it happen!    Recently he's been practicing less because he's busy scoring films now, including Tom Delonge's new movie "Monsters of California".   When asked about the greatest bands of all time, Ilan tells Stryker The Beatles are the best song writers while Led Zeppelin is the best band.    In March of 2020, under his band name The New Regime, Ilan says he put out his best work and was also on the road touring with Silversun Pickups, sadly, all of that came to a halt due to Covid.    Stryker and Ilan chat about his career as a solo artist compared to that as a member of both Nine Inch Nails and Angels and Airwaves.  Everything from the style of music to the difference in transportation from show to show (super nice bus vs small van).   The guys discuss two of the more recent Ilan Rubin released songs, "Talk Talk Talk" and "Chaos in Motion".  Stryker believes they would have sounded great in the movie Licorice Pizza directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.    The guys discuss where Ilan's music fits in, as well as Ilan's take on songwriting,  producers, and bands who simply copy an old formula   He thinks data is the biggest thing to ruin music since the streaming world started.  Artists are getting signed based off one tik tok song which is making it much harder to find legacy bands.   The guys then have an animated chat about new music and new music on the radio and how radio in general can be better.    Ilan tells Stryker about his audition to become the drummer for Nine Inch Nails, Ilan was only 19 years old! THIS IS WILD!     It was shocking to hear that his time with Paramore was the first time he was in a band with people his age or younger!   Stryker asks Ilan about his working relationship with Tom Delonge and what it's like writing songs with Tom.    This is one of the most fun episodes to date, music is in great hands with Ilan Rubin.  Thanks as always for checking out the show!

In 2020 he became the youngest person ever inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame for his work with Nine Inch Nails. It's testament to the drive and talent of a man who started playing drums as a young child, and by 11 had already played the Warped Tour and the 1999 Woodstock Festival with the band F.O.N. But Ilan plays more than just drums – as a solo artist he plays every instrument, as well as singing. We explore Ilan's entire career in this interview.

He also runs his own band, The New Regime, which recently released a new album, Heart Mind Body & Soul, and it's out now!   Ilan gives Nick incredible faith in the future generation of musicians. Join them as they discuss Ilan's extensive career path and his achievements, what the album recording process is like, Ilan's intense fascination with music theory and how music is constructed, and where the future of music is headed.   Key Takeaways [2:05] Ilan's album came out a week before lockdown; worst time to release music. However, the deluxe version of his album recently came out! [3:35] Ilan likes to structure his album in a sequence. He wants his body of work to have an opener and a closer. [5:30] Once the music bug bit Ilan at eight years old, he has had an intense focus on this and only this. [7:30] Ilan took singing lessons later in his career and he absolutely hated it! [8:00] As a musician, you can play an instrument nervously, but you can handle those nerves through practice. You can't do that with singing. [10:00] Nick shares what he likes the most about Ilan's new album. [10:45] What was Ilan's recording process like on this album? [12:55] Ilan recorded his album at a residential studio called Sonic Ranch outside of El Paso, Texas. [14:55] How does Ilan get feedback on his body of work as a one-man-band? [17:45] How many instruments does Ilan play? [18:20] What new hobbies has Ilan picked up during the lockdown? [20:10] How did Ilan first get into music? [23:00] Some of Ilan's achievements feel like a lifetime ago, but he is really proud to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. [24:10] How did Ilan's relationship with the Nine Inch Nails first begin? [27:35] How did Ilan get involved with Angels & Airwaves? [30:20] Ilan hates the lazy musician stereotype. Don't let your talent go to waste. [31:10] Why does Ilan hate the term “EP”? [32:55] In Ilan's spare time, he loves to deconstruct albums and reverse engineer the process, especially music done by the Beatles. [36:10] Ilan loves deep-diving into music theory and finding out why something works so well together. [38:45] Would Ilan ever start his own label? [44:55] What is Ilan currently listening to?   Thanks for listening! Tune in next week and don't forget to take a minute to review the podcast. He's also played with Tom Delonge (BLINK 182) in their band ANGELS & AIRWAVES, and most recently released his own slice of sonic rock heaven via his band THE NEW REGIME. Episode 12 of the SoundDiego Podcast welcomes Sara Watkins, who got her start right here in North County San Diego as co-founder/fiddler of the Grammy-winning bluegrass group Nickel Creek. She's since embarked on an acclaimed solo career, is one-third of the folk supergroup I'm With Her — and also plays in the Watkins Family Hour with her brother, Sean (who is also in Nickel Creek, as is Chris Thile, now the host of NPR's "Live From Here"). It won the Grammy Award in 1993 for Album of the Year, is still the bestselling album by a female singer and sold more than 45 million copies worldwide, thanks in no small part to Whitney Houston's chart-topping Dolly Parton cover, "I Will Always Love You." You could call Cory Stier one of the most plugged-in people in the San Diego music scene. While cutting his teeth originally in the band Pistolita, Stier eventually found himself behind the local label Thrill Me Records and behind the drum kit for bands including Cults, Mrs. Magician, Hideout and others. As a talent buyer, his home base for the last 10 years has been Soda Bar while he also branched out into presenting shows at the Irenic, Casbah, the Belly Up, the Che Cafe, House of Blues and other clubs. Fittingly, Stier ended up purchasing Soda Bar with Casbah owner Tim Mays, Andrew Montoya (from Beaters, the Sess, Teach Me, etc.) and Angie Ollman in 2018. Be sure to visit SodaBarMusic.com to purchase merch, with proceeds going directly to staff, and of course, head there for shows when life gets (somewhat) back to normal.Listen/subscribe to the SoundDiego Podcast on your favorite podcasting platform: Apple Podcasts | Google Play | Spotify | StitcherEpisode 10 Show Notes:Soda Bar celebrated its 10th anniversary just last year — and who else would Cory tap to ring in the momentous occasion than his own band, Cults! He's referring to none other than Rosemary Bystrak, who handles marketing for the Casbah, is a regular SoundDiego contributor and runs the blog SD: Dialed In.Similarly, while talking about the Whistle Stop around 2:15 in the episode, Cory also throws out the name "Craig" — a reference to Craig Oliver, owner of one of San Diego's best independent labels, Volar Records. The first album Cory bought himself was Lagwagon's 1994 sophomore full-length "Trashed" — here's a little background on it.We joined hundreds of other rabid Frights fans for their huge, free Balboa Park show at Spreckels Organ Pavilion back in February (doesn't that seem like a lifetime ago?) — check out the SoundDiego TV recap here. Also, who could forget Drive Like Jehu's epic predecessor to the Frights' Balboa Park show?
